It seems legit, my brother is in the town where it's being sold so I'd buy it through him.
Is there an easy way to verify how legit it is?

Eh, this is pretty shitty advice. Even if you are saving up for a nicer watch, a Seiko 5 won't set you back very far. It is better to wear a cheap watch while saving, getting used to mechanicals and wearing a watch, than to go without one at all for however many years.

People start collecting shitters though and end up spending as much money on their dogshit collection as it would cost to get a nice Tudor or Air-King or something.

Most of the really low end mechanicals are borderline useless as timekeepers and vary by like 30 seconds a day. Unless he just doesn't care he's going to be irritated by how off it is constantly.

Save up and get something good.

People also get a shitter and then save for a nicer piece. Sounds like you are the generalizing, autistically screaching one. Also, why the fuck would you suggest an Air-King?

>Most of the really low end mechanicals are borderline useless as timekeepers and vary by like 30 seconds a day. Unless he just doesn't care he's going to be irritated by how off it is constantly.
Maybe 30 sec if you get a shitty one. After a couple days it can be adjusted anyway, and as long as it runs fast or you set is ahead, you will never be late.

That chart is also pretty shit, but this is well-known.

I totally agree with your advice, but let's not exaggerate. Your typical Seiko 5 with a 7s26 will not be off by more than 1 minute per week.

Seikos in general tend to outperform the listed specs consistently.

Now a fucking vostok will be off by 30 secs to a minute per day.

My first watch was an snk809 then I got this (Seiko 6n42-00e0) on a whim for $40 to see if I liked a bracelet because I remember as a kid wearing an unsized bracelet that I didn't like them as much as the leather straps. Turns out I really liked this watch and now I am buying a sarx033 next month. Point is get cheap garbage to get a sense of your taste and what works for you, then get something that you know you will like and works with your budget.

Buying something just because I'm looks nice online plus the groupthink factor of online communities is a great way to set yourself up for disappointment.

Alright, I subjected this old fucker to every kind of non-destructive and semi-destructive water resistance test I could think of. Final test was the dark, forbidden rite of warm water leak checking (pictured), which is especially risky on a compressor watch. It's just a prebuilt pre-amp circuit slapped into a plastic project box, with a piezo mic. Real basic shit, I just followed some guide on the Internet.
>>
>>61456584
Yeah thats what mine is as well. You use TG 0.4.0 software?
>>
>>61456599
Yeah, it works most of the time.
>>
>>61456709
I have to basically shut everything down in my house and not move to get a reasonably accurate reading.
>>
>>61456755
You're doing it wrong then, a contact mic should only pic up sound of what it's attached to (and if you don't cushion it then also what that object is resting on).
>>
>>61456807
the contact mic is attached to the outside of the watch case resting on a soft object. If you speak loudly or play music in close proximity to the watch the case will vibrate thus transferring energy to the piezo electric substrate. My work room is right next to a large central air unit which when on will vibrate the table holding the watch and thus the piezo electric substrate.. etc.
>>
>>61456869
That still doesn't sound right though.
>>
>>61456902
I don't mean to be rude but do you not understand the concept of a piezo electric device? It converts mechanical force to electricity or electricity to mechanical force. If you vibrate the substrate it will produce electrical output which the amplifier will enhance. put your watch next to a speaker or on a vibrating table. the watch case will obviously have mechanical energy transferred to it.

All that matters is that the motor vibration is properly isolated with he belts they are using and that the chuck spins true with no almost no positional variation. The slight parallax error from the machine to eyepiece angle may not be the best but it probably doesn't matter all that much.

"People" don't dislike Seiko.

We've been posting all about lots of different watches for a while.

Recently someone pulled out their bait, applied it to a hook, and posted a few times about how "hurr, Seiko bad." They got some responses. Others, seeing the responses decided to join in on the "fun" and since then we've been having threads with Seiko being good or bad is a constant theme and we're attracting a certain kind of person.
>>
>>61460793

>>61460874
Seiko is getting so much hate because half of you Seiko collectors are massive faggots. I look at watches and say oh that watch is sort of interesting .. or that other watch is interesting. then you faggots come around talking about how all seikos are amazing cause their illustrious history and their various factories in the 60s and 70s and how there are two different vintage seikos and how amazing the finishing is and blah blah blah blah... the sarb 033 is finishined better then omegas swatch is bad wah wah wah wah ... seiko is better than rolex but i post a picture of my rolex for legitimacy whenever arguing about seiko. blah blah blah.

I don't even dislike seiko but you seiko fags are just fucking annoying.

It looks kinda derivative, a cross between a Rolex day date and a vintage Seamaster.
Also, that date is pretty far from the dial edge, which means that the movement is a lot smaller than the case size suggests.

But I have to say it's definitely a pretty nice-looking watch.

Yeah I really like the feature mix of the two classic designs. It's a pretty new model for Breitling I think and I really just like the design, more than the Rolex Daydate. Also it costs a fraction of a new Rolex DD and doesn't get dwarfed by my wrist (it's a 43mm watch, wears a bit smaller than that tho and my wrists are 8 inches).
Haven't thought about the date placement yet but you're right, the movement is 29 mm in diameter, classic ETA 2834-2 with some Breitling goodies.

>>61462441
I did already, it's really nice. The only thing I miss a bit is a display back but I can live with that. It's gonna be my daily office watch that's just rugged enough in looks and ability to not make me look like a lawyer.
Maybe I'll check for other watches with that movement but so far I havent found any that I like that much.

This is why Breitling sucks. Get a fucking Tudor or a used Rolex or something, or at least an Omega would be more respectable. Your wrist is not so enormous that a huge dress watch won't look ridiculous.

Speedmaster Professionals are pretty nice in my opinion, it's too bad all the dogshit special editions and other variants kind of drag it down. To get it out of the way: yes, the coaxial escapement makes service more critical and more expensive.

The sixty hour power reserve is certainly nice, as is the column wheel, but I don't care for the dimensions, price (2x+ the price of an 1861), or altered subdial layout.

The highest grade of Swiss movements is "chronometer grade", but even those all have to be adjusted and regulated to guarantee chronometer accuracy.

Even the lowest-grade movements can roll off the production line within chronometer spec by chance, but even the highest production standards can't guarantee chronometer spec without human attention.

Dr. Daniels wants us to defeat the quartz menace.

>The advance of the quartz watch in the 1960s and 70’s was responsible for a massive shift in focus for the Swiss watch making industry which caused great concern to George Daniels . The revival of the mechanical hand-made watch by George Daniels in 1969 attracted the attention of connoisseur collectors of watches from which blossomed a new era in precision wrist watches.
>Extra complications were included in Daniels’ watches. These included tourbillons, perpetual calendar and a minute repeater mechanism which along with many more too numerous to mention, continued to enthral the connoisseur collector. George Daniels viewed horology as a continuous scientific art, with social significance and useful qualities, which continues today under the leadership of Daniels’ protégé Roger Smith.
>The decline of the mechanical watch industry was reversed and there can be no doubt that George Daniels, with his pioneering approach to watch making made the most significant contribution to horology by demonstrating that the mechanical watch can, in the long term, out perform the electronic quartz watch.

>>
>>61468940
Honestly, there's a decent amount of options in that price range. Do you have any other criteria? Do you want to spend as close to the limit as you can, or does price not matter so much?
>>
>>61469152
Well, regarding the price I don't mind being cheaper, like 300€ can be fine too. As for the watch itself I'd want it to be precise with the time with no need to adjust it daily, e.g not going off by 1min daily. The design should be plain, simple and elegant, nothing too bloated with dozen timezones, simple date is enough. However it shouldn't be too simple as it can appear boring, some nice, small eye-catching details would be nice e.g outstanding pointers or a great case.
>>
>>61469220
If you didn't said a clear caseback then i would have recommend a vintage omega. 55x/56x movements keep perfect time, their design in the 50s/60s is classic and timeless and the price tag is cheap as hell.
>>
>>61469150
Cutting-edge tech is always expensive.
The first commercial quartz watch by Seiko was also very expensive.

Truth is that mechanical watch tech keeps improving (ceramic components, MEMS, silicon hairsprings, computer design, ...) so it's reasonable to assume that mechanical watches could in time once again replace quartz.

Batteries a shit.
>>
>>61469281

Almost all of the big houses have a watch with sillicon escapement. The sillicon pallet fork on sillicon escapewheel had Almost No wear, and when combined with a self lubricating coating wear is minimal. Panerai even has a novelty with this self lubricating coating on all bearings, no service for 40 years or so.

>brings it back today on the 20th
>person he bought the watch for somehow tore the stem out
>can't even put it back, the keyless work is either misaligned or broke
Some people just can't be trusted with anything, not even a supposedly robust 100m all-steel automatic. I can't even open it or I'll likely void the warranty (wholesalers hate independents poking around in their watches), it has to go back to the service center. How are people this clumsy even, not to mention brutish?

Also no need for adjustments. Cleaner designs. Thinner and more light weight.

Watch manufacturers should go all out for silicon movements now.

I don't, or at least I wouldn't make that my focus.

If I go my hands on the Swatch Group the first fucking thing I would do is start heavily investing in MEMS technology and try to move the higher end Swatch Group brands to MEMS movements ASAP to finally try and get ahead of Rolex, and then work on seriously upgrading the finishing on case/dials/hands/bracelets at those higher end brands.

I'd also have some Hamilton's and Tissot's designed that weren't deliberately uglified and throw the 2892-A2 in them to aggressively try and take back market share from micro-brands by beating them as a value proposition, and use the MEMS technology and finishing to sell the higher end brands.
>>
>>61468806
Some movement designs have much better inherent accuracy than others, and those movements are typically much easier to adjust and regulate to chronometer spec such that they will pass chronometer testing.

A famous historical example from the 1960s is the Omega 561, where 1,000,000 movements in a row passed COSC testing.

For modern movements, a top grade ETA 2892-A2 will typically require less adjustment and regulation to pass COSC testing than most top grade ETA 2824-2's would.

I want to try this watch on a NATO or perlon but I'm not a fan of swapping out bracelet and straps often. Drilled lug holes make it nicer.
