Explain how this is a good idea.

How about fucking EVGA/Asus/MSI over by RMA'ing card and selling unopened replacement on craigslist as new card.

It has proven to be able to handle it.
And assuming a 60-70% discount compared to a new cars you can break 3 cards before spending more.

It's really not a problem, you just have to repaste them. The biggest danger is variable loads causing thermal fluctuation constantly expanding and contracting the tracks over time. Constant running in ideal conditions and slightly undervolted means that they're not even reaching the peak thermal thresholds to cause damage. Worst case scenario you have slightly more worn fans and slightly exaggerated sagging, even that isn't super likely since they don't use conventional mounting in most applications. Risks beyond that are basically the same as buying any used card.

"factory sealed" means it isn't used, right?
Goods drop in value 20-40% just from opening the box.

There was but i recently found a few shops online in my country selling zotac boards at RRP.
Still probably going to wait for 580s to go back to RRP or just wait for the next generation.

"factory sealed" means that they re-shrink wrapped it.
Reshrinking stuff isn't difficult.

If anything it's a trial by fire. Get rid of the weak ones and the ones with subtle flaws and leave only the strong.
