Messing around with an old laptop and wanted a really lightweight distro. Is mint the way to go?

What specs do you have to begin with? CPU? RAM? GPU? VRAM? something at least
Puppy GNU/Linux. My 400 MHz P3 box with 256MB RAM runs it decently.

2gbs of ram
Mint isn't light weight. How shitty is it? Arch would be fine if it's not too old. Only uses about 600mb of memory for me with i3.

Thats not too shit. Xubuntu will work just fine.
Thanks guys.

If you are new to linux and don't care about the philosophy of free software then I would recommend a *buntu distro.
>Lubuntu
This distro is what I use. I have it installed on a machine with less than 512MB RAM.

>Xubuntu
I have never used it but folks on /g/ seem to like it.

Mint used to be really good. But some of the decisions made by the dev with respect to security have changed my mind about it.
The best thing you can do is read about the distros and run a liveDVD/liveUSB and try them out for yourself. You can also check out reviews on YT but I find those to be less helpful (although you can see the default applications).
There is no right answer here, there are too many distros. Do some research and find one you like.

Anything with XFCE or LXDE, if you want even more free RAM you can try IceWM or i3 but if you are pretty new then go for Xubuntu, its basic and just works
Mint is for retarded niggers.

Does anyone have experience with Xubuntu and Lubuntu? Is it just the different DE, or are there any other notable differences?
>>61449038
Its just a different DE preset for Ubuntu.

>are there any other notable differences?
No
>>61448397
unironically gentoo or Arch. If you're a manbaby just use arch-anywhere or xubuntu
>>61448397
OpenBSD
>>61449038
they are a buggy mess.
ubuntu MATE requires around 300mb when idle, can open multiple tabs in browser, watch video while editing code and work smoothly. i use it for my core duo laptop that has 3gbs of ram, used it on my 2gb older laptop too before the HDD died.

NetBSD
Works fine on 4MB of ram.
