I have an old vista machine and I want to recover some photo and documents. I used to have a linux disk I could use for it, I think it was called Slax, but have lost track of the disk. Is there a freeware linux boot disk I can download please?
Pic unrelated.

Literally any modern Linux distro will boot up in a live CD mode without needing to be installed
Better to use Ubuntu or mint and have a decent environment to rescue your files instead of a shitty text-based micro-distro like some anons are suggesting

This "this".
Just an extension: if your PC is REALLY bad go for a spin with LXDE. It is called Lubuntu.
Depending on what you want (specifically) the Gparted Live ISO could also work.

If you mean "recover deleted files"
then use "photo rec" in the package "test disk"
They also have a live cd iirc.
if you mean "transfer my shit off of the old harddrive"
then plug it into literally any linux distro, or literally any windows version and go to file manager, windows explorer and navigate to "c:/users/*username*/" and you will see the folders for everything you want

Watch out when you install ubuntu because you can easily overwrite the harddrive.

Does your old machine have a CD player?
