Hello /fglt/,
I am moving from Debian to Void Linux, and so far I'm having trouble deciding what DE to use.

I have been using XFCE, and I love it's customization, but I want to maybe try something a little new?

Cinnamon looks very nice, but I want to kind of rice a little to make things look even better.

Which is the best for ricing, XFCE or Cinnamon? I imagine with effort, I could get XFCE to look exactly like anything I can do with Cinnamon, no? What is the benefit of choosing Cinnamon over XFCE?

Systemd fucking sucks, that's why.
I'm so sick of dealing with this stupid fucking shit crashing and breaking everything and never working.

That and I want to try out something new. Debian is starting to feel kinda boring. Arch seems too edgy and memey, and Gentoo sounds like it'll take me a million years to install. Void looks like it's just Gentoo for people who don't have time to deal with its stupid bullshit.

And okay,
how about which is easier to get looking nice - XFCE or Cinnamon?

So, I installed the latest Ubuntu. And I have an HD 6950. It's currently using that gallium driver. The proprietary driver says it's only compatible for Ubuntu 16.04.

I have recently been trying out Manjaro. I am normally an arch user, but I just wanted to see what software is installed and how it was configured. Since most arch users like to completely customize it themselves, Manjaro might not be the best option. I found that it had all the basic software I use preinstalled, but came with tons of extra stuff, like 3 image editors or something ridiculous like that. It was a nice experience, but I will surely be moving back to arch.

Why do people complain about "bloat" when a distro installs too many packages? It's my understanding that the only downside of having a bunch of packages installed that you don't really need is that they take up some disk space. They just sit there not doing anything or slowing anything down if you don't use them, right?
>>
So after using Ubuntu for 3 days I uninstalled it.

Been using Mint for nearly two years on my machine (it justwerx, other distros like Fedora didn't seem to play nice with the hardware for some reason), but Cinnamon has been shitting itself lately.

Probably going to end up switching to Debian or something for a change (and for something a bit more lightweight), but for the moment I think I need a new DE. At the moment, when I close the lid and open it back up, very often Cinnamon won't load labels for anything, (e.g. names of stuff in the start menu, wifi network names, names of files in thumbnail view, etc). For a decent while the battery monitor stopped working too, had to rely on acpi.

I know XFCE doesn't support secondary key bindings with Fn on my laptop (e.g. Fn+F8 to turn the volume down), and Mate has some screen tearing issues on it, so they're out.

Any other DE I should look into?

Ubuntu is great, the official (Unity) variant is just bloated and slow. Variants like Xubuntu are vastly superior.

Anyways, the most solid and smooth distro I can recommend for a Wincuck is probably Solus. It's slowly becoming the new Mint while actually doing things properly and not just duct-taping shit together.
>>
>>61451964
Shit, you're right.

I've been looking for a distro with up to date KDE too, I tried Kubuntu, Manjaro, Neon and Tumbleweed. To my experience Neon has been giving me much more trouble than Tumbleweed. However what I notice in every single one is that I get poor graphics performance when I have compositing enabled and there's no way around it.

Well, there is. Disabling compositing. But fuck that, I want my drop shadows and KWin script support. And I got AMD but I heard that if you want decent performance on linux distros you need nvidia with proprietary drivers.
>>
>>61452083
What was unresponsive about Ubuntu? That might have a fix depending on your hardware. I spent 2 years trying to figure out why Chromium was so terrible on linux and it was me just missing a goddamn flag.
>>
>>61452148
Why wouldn't KWin scripts work without compositing? For me Neon has been pretty good, no problems whatsoever (have it both, on my laptop and desktop). Looking at Fedora KDE spin and Mageia at the moment. I'm using compositing and everything's really smooth.
>>
>>61452176
I suppose because KWin is the compositor and you are essentially disabling it. I tried that actually, just to confirm my theory that scripts wouldn't work if I disabled compositing.

I suppose it depends on the hardware but basically, when I have compositing enabled (In any distro, with up to date mesa and kernel, both radeon and amdgpu drivers) any application that is in motion, like a browser smooth scrolling or a game, gets microstuttering way too frequently. I turn off compositing and the microstutter is gone completely. Disabling desktop effects has no effect and keeps doing it. Basically I'm fucked there and I wondered if using a cheap nvidia GPU for linux would be a better option.

Also it's weird because I was under the impression that Tumbleweed was pretty much up to date in general and just like you said, firefox be old.

I may also try Fedora KDE, though it sounds weird as I always heard it's the go to distribution for Gnome instead. Good luck with finding the perfect distro.

I distrohopped for a little bit and found that openSUSE tumbleweed is the most "stable" distro I could find on my end. Problem is, well, it's not that snappy as Fedora or Kubuntu under the same conditions.

Is it possible that the default setup of btrfs+xfs is the culprit here? Are those file systems not as mature or optimized for SSDs or maybe it is something else within openSUSE? I noticed that KDE takes a little bit longer to load the desktop, that's after booting which takes a considerable amount of time because of the wicked service (found out setting up a static IP address halves that, but it's still quite slow). Also it might be worth saying that applications just take a bit longer to open as well.

The moments when they wrote off Unity, Mir and (previously) Upstart were important milestones marking Canonical's shift from desktop-oriented distribution to the IoT meme. USB C/3.1 capabilities. Ability to support newer graphics cards such as the gtx 9xx series and higher without having to manually reset the driver every other boot. M.2 nvme drives able to run at full speed. Ryzen microcode. Ubuntu is like the only one I've used that actually did all of this out of the box. Debian seems to fall on it's face and would cap my data transfer to sub 50MB/s over USB even though that same drive would do 110MB/s on Ubuntu.

Yea that's what I think too. I'll probably toss Ubuntu with the latest gnome release on it onto a live boot and try it for a few days.

Yea unity seemed like garbage. I couldn't bring myself to keep using it. And what is/was Mir? Why was it bad?

Recent kernels are not a feature exclusive to Ubanto.

Measured with what?
Pagefiling is configured differently on debian and ubuntu. on Debian it's both configured for shittier hardware as well as in minimizing-potential-data-loses way

Let's see if I got this right for a dual boot on UEFI

First I install linux distro
Then I install Windows
Then I use command on Windows to copy over some file on the EFI partition so it uses the linux bootloader instead

Is this right?

Then GNU/Linux
Then remove Windows

Windows on GPT mode first
Linux on GPT mode second
Grub should automatically find Windows boot and add it to the menu if your distro isn't shit

You use Puddletag to tag music.
You use a music player to play music.
You don't use one program for everything.

Hi, guys

is there a way to enqueue mail with msmtp offline so that I can shoot it off when I get online?

I have seen msmtp_enqueue, but I can't see how this would work and Luke Smith doesn't say shit on that. He just sets it up.

Is it possible to enqueue mail on my local machine and blast all of them once I'm online?

Actually, it's anywhere from 8-9GiB, but you can choose which packages to not install.
