Hello /g/. So I'm thinking about moving to Windows 10 from GNU/Linux. What are the caveats?

I know about mandatory update issues and telemetry, but my main concern is security. Is Windows security really that weak that it needs a Windows Defender? I never needed any GNU/Linux defenders and never though about viruses and cryptolockers as long as I'm not running anything with root rights.

Am I safe if I receive updates right away (like I have choice, have I?) and don't run any suspicious software with escalated through UAC rights?

How bad is Linux Subsystem for Windows?

Anything else I should be worried about? I'd like to read stories of your experience moving to Windows.
>>
Don't download shit for shaddy websites, block scripts for unknown / non trusted sites and you'll be fine, no need for any anti virus botnets.

If you do torrent games and stuff, just install malware bytes
>>
Why are you switching to windows though?
You could you just run it in a VM.
>>
>>61431107
>I'm thinking about moving to Windows 10 from GNU/Linux.

Being this retarded though.

Download a bunch of distros that look good and try them in a live USB.
No need to wipe out your hard drive.

Noob friendly distros:
All of the official ubuntu forks
ElementaryOS
Solus OS

>Is Windows security really that weak that it needs a Windows Defender?
Yes, and after wannacry it won't be enough (unless you use Common Sense 2017)
>How bad is Linux Subsystem for Windows?
Broken as fuck
>>
>>61431107
i see no reason to do this other than for video games. if you're not playing windows-exclusive games, you should be running a linux distro. end of story.
>>
>>61431107
>I'm not actually a linux user.
>>
>caveats
Questionable resource utilization is the primary one. In some ways it's "intelligent" about the programs you run most often, but in general it's a hog.

>Is Windows security really that weak
Well yes, but in ways that Windows Defender doesn't really address anyway. I think Defender's only real value is in the firewall/network protection functions. The antivirus is a wash. The whole device health aspect is actually a major annoyance and does nothing but force certain settings on you through nagging.

>Am I safe
Somewhat.

>How bad is Linux Subsystem
Fairly bad. You're fine if you want to run some simple scripts or terminal-based packages though.

>Anything else
You're going to notice your system running horribly slowly for the first ~30 minutes after your initial boot into Windows. Don't be alarmed. The best thing you can do is simply sit back and watch TV or something. It's perfectly normal and will pass. It only happens on the very first boot.

You should also worry about the Start menu. It's a mess no matter how much you try to clean it up. Classic Shell is a godsend.
>>
Where can I find a copy of windows 10?
>>
>>61431863
Are you a babby? Windows is necessary for viable CAD and video production software.
>>
>>61431941
Microsoft provides both the installer (free download) and licenses online.
>>
>>61431884
this

nobody whose used a *nix system for more than a week would SWITCH to a windows system; it's an asinine thing to do regardless given the variety of other options available
>>
>>61431701
It's complicated. Generally I found myself spending too much time maintaining the system instead of actually being productive.

Like right now I have cracklings through pulseaudio equalizer after Debian upgrade. I need an equalizer and it seems like it is not maintained anymore. Right now it annoys me the most and rather spending hours hoping it has a fix I think I might spend this time moving to WIndows.

GPU acceleration in Chrome doesn't work for some websites.

Real mess with mime types and default applications. Debian has BROWSER variable in bash profile, update-alternatives, couple of places for mimeapps.list.

Similar shit with appearance. There is no single place to put my theme/font/hinting configuration. There are different places for qt4, qt5, gtk2 and gtk3 configurations.

DE would somewhat solve some of those problems, but I don't use a DE. I was really happy with my xmonad setup (best window management I've had so far), but integrating xmonad with a DE has some caveats depending on a DE. gnome-settings-daemon doesn't work at all, mate-settings-daemon messes with DPI i've set through nvidia config (using high-dpi display). Sometimes I use a second monitor and I can't set the different DPI for each of them.

I'm pretty sure all of the problems mentioned have a solution, but I'm just tired and I don't want to mess with it. I just want things to work. I want to share my Downloads directory with another computer without complicated samba setup - last time I used it there were problems with sharing arbitrary user directory regarding ownership. I want to click and run Lightworks instead of searching forums for the libraries I need to download and put somewhere. I want to configure my trackball buttons with a nice GUI instead of blindly messing with xorg.

I'm just tired and I want to do stuff instead of messing with the system.

For the most part you should be good with the usual common sense. There is some aspects of spyware that Microsoft has in windows 10 in there settings and some more hidden bullshit in the registry so i'd look up the fix on that if you're concerned on that end. But then again windows in general isn't the best place for privacy linux always has been. But as original op said as long as its just simple stuff even torrenting. You should be solid. And if you're a gamer you should be better with more updates, and games that are compatible on windows so there's that. So happy trails friend :)
>>
>>61432533
It's okay, man. You don't have to be ashamed anymore. You've stopped using your computer as little more than a roleplaying prop to play pretend hackers with, and that's a good thing. You can stop feeling concerned with how the other "hackers" are going to see you, and worry about just using your computer.

everything on windows is cancer

the sooner you understand that the better

Loonix fags will tell you what a mess it is, and it can be, but since implementing UAC a literal decade ago the problems have been curtailed dramatically. Usual advice about separate user and admin accounts still stands even though most software under admin will only elevate with a prompt.

It's built-in antimalware and nothing more. Don't misunderstand.

Yes. That's common sense.

Linux Subsystem is kinda useless. I can't edit anything from Windows. chmod/chown doesn't work - despite changing anything I can't access my ssh config I took from Linux installation. Can't run X although that was expected.

You have a week to install updates normally. If you keep postponing, Windows will eventually force you to reboot in the middle of your work.

No one writes viruses for desktop Linux.

You'll be safe from remote exploits (mostly, there's always a possibility you'll get hit with a 0day but those are usually used for corporations and governments), but not from malware in general.

>and don't run any suspicious software with escalated through UAC rights?
No, if you run a malicious program under an administrator account then it's game over. UAC bypass is trivial in Windows.

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you’re referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I’ve recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.
Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called “Linux”, and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project. There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use.
Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine’s resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called “Linux” distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

This. Unfortunately Bill left his company in the hands of a bunch of money grubbing incompetents while he's trying to catch AIDS in Africa.
Unfortunately we're left with not real choice as Windows is the only real OS available for the PC.

Windows just needs to move on from NT, it's a convoluted mess that's just been hacked together over the decades. It's no wonder there's so many holes in it. Unfortunately MS is deathly afraid of breaking backwards compatibility in the slightest and we're probably stuck with NT forever.

They need to modularize. They've started in earnest, but the need to make it #1 priority.

OP is blogging on.

Everything going smooth so far: got a somewhat decent window management through Plumb (autotiling), Aquasnap (shortcuts for tiling) and Dexpot (proper desktop management). bug.n and HashTWM doesn't work very well, so I ended up with this combination.

One problem I'm concerned with is that Emacs won't show pictures. I've put all the required dlls into bin folder and it still doesn't work. gnu.org suggests trying other builds, but I'm not sure which one to start with - https://www.gnu.org/software/emacs/manual/html_node/efaq-w32/Other-useful-ports.html#Other-useful-ports

I use a customized version of Arch with FVWM and dvtm + abduco, etc, and am able to still accomplish the tasks associated with work. It's not for everyone and I do respect your decision since it does have the tendency to prevent others from obtaining a desired level of productivity.

What are the packages of PulseAudio you have installed? Since ALSA packages are installed by default, perhaps use Arch. Though it would probably require more time from you but at least solving technical problems in Arch is easier than messing with all the installed mess in Debian.

>>61431955
Not if we all switch and demand same on Linux.

I'm currently on 7, and on the fence about LTSB N.
Is it better performance wise?
Is there still spyware in this version, and if so, how effective is Spybot Anti-Beacon?
>>
>>61439514
I was able to accomplish any tasks, but in the end it just more time consuming than it could be. I've spent a reasonable amount of time discovering GNU/Linux and learned a lot of useful stuff out there. Now I want to see how everything works on the other side. I might as well return back if I won't like it.

>What are the packages of PulseAudio you have installed?
Those which came with Debian 9. It was fine in Debian 8, not sure what's the problem was. I've used Arch for about a year and enjoyed it the most, but bleeding edge has some cons. Package updates often fix things and as often introduce new bugs or change the way software works. I've switched to Debian because I wanted a completely still, robust system and it did the job fairly well in that regard. But yes, solving any problem in Arch is far easier than in Debian. Arch wiki is the best and helps a lot even using any other distro.

Ended up using bug.n. Plumb has unchangable shortcuts which interfere with the rest of the stack and bug.n replaces the stack altogether successfully mimicking my xmonad config to some extent.

Use a premium antivirus, or at least pirate one if you're a cheapo, always keep 'Sandboxing' enabled. You're good to go, nothing can touch you.

Will take a long time. Better off with Windows in a VM.

I'd be more worried about the crap the manufacturer stuck in that laptop. If there's anyone worse than M$, it's the OEMs and their junk programs.

LTSB N is without the microsoft media player/center meant for europeans after europe sued the shit out of microsoft
LTSB is ok, you don't need to get N
>>
>>61441943
>LTSB N
What about the spyware? I assume that's still included but easier to remove?
>>
>>61442330
Can't be entirely removed. Portions of it are clearly baked into windows 10, what exactly is baked is very vague because it's proprietary. I could fucking hear my fans ramping up on LTSB 10 vanilla during idle compared to windows 7 Ultimate vanilla on idle despite having the same autistic fan settings on both installs.
If I had to install LTSB 10 again I would have to thoroughly prune services, group policy, and regedit for bloat.

Your pic related is way better than Linux.
So what's the points of your comment?
>>
>>61442453
So you're on windows 7 too at the moment?
I'll probably just stick with it at this point.
>>
>>61442496
Yeah, I'm sticking with 7 on desktop.
On fresh 7 SP1 you only needed to:
disable the media player and all associated services with it
kill the maintenance tasks that are linked to WEI because that eats CPU like a pig
go through task scheduler turning off MS garbage like WEI and media player
go through msconfig startup to untick any unnecessary programs
install the standalone hotfix for HDDs with more than 2TB causing boot slowdowns
From there it's smooth sailing and everything else is cosmetic tweaks.
On 10 the necessary pruning has more than doubled.

Firewall up, either stealth or disable ports, and disable all services that have nothing to do with videogames.

1. Install Windows 10
2. Install Common Sense 2017
3. Install VMWare/Virtualbox
4. Install Antergos in the virtualised environment
5. Setup shared folder and install ClamAV inside Arch box
6. ???
7. Do risky stuff inside VM, download torrents and scan them using ClamAV on Arch before running them on Windows.

I think you overestimate people's willingness to role play and underestimate their state of poverty. I get most of the Linux fetishism here is because these spergtaku basement dwellers can only afford cucktastic laptops on which nothing runs as smoothly as Linux. They also can't afford many gaymez so all the more reason to not be on Windows and be shitposting in /g/ and watching animu instead.

To me, Linux is seems doomed for work instead of for play (if your work is C programming, particularly -- that's why I use and like it). I want to skip the surly bonds of the botnet completely, but until I ascend to a mental state wherein enjoying quality video, audio, and gaymz is sufficiently deprecated, I'll always need a Windows "media" machine. :c

lets get real for a moment. You install windows 10 in about 45 minutes and for most linuxes its about the same but remember. Biggest base linuxes are about 1 gigabytes or 2 while windows 10 can be more than 5 gigabytes of data. And what happens when you open them. On the linux there are about 2 functional buttons, 3 are nonfunctional and in those two buttons there are some pictures to play with. Maybe slide down or up. On windows though, you feel like a god. Its professional its fast, its all functional. You have a godlike user interface. The thing that the linux does not have. You have those two buttons in the linux, but you still search google for codes to write in terminal. Linux is free because its not worth a penny. Nobody would sell a paper without taking the money. Just not sure why people still buy android while windows phone does 10 times more. Trust me. When you work with windows you know some genius ground breaker dedicated himself to give you an operational os
