I guess so but do we exactly know how this will affect the general population? Is it all about throttling and paying more to unlock? Is it about privacy because we already know thr govt is spying on us.
>>61426118
> Is it all about throttling and paying more to unlock?
yes. they are saying it won't be now but give it 5 years and it will be for sure
they will also use it to restrict information. all those dumbass basement-dwelling altright youtubers and neonazi twitter barbies will have their pages subtly restricted to make people less inclined to visit them. it doesn't take much throttling to make people leave a page, they are unbelievably fickle
>>61425760

its a fucking mine feild.
if the FCC/Obama go around the state laws then conservatives whine about the feds trampling on state rights and otherbullshit
I don't think Pai is bad guy, I just think he is an idealist and thinks the world works according to ideology, but that doesn't mean he cannot be wrong on the matter.
Companies don't give a shit about consumers, all they can is about money, they will do the least possible to get the most money and nothing else beyond that.
Just like Greenspan admitted he was wrong too, you know after the huge crash in 2008 and being warned about it for over 10 years...
so if the laws change and the isps start censoring or throttling the internet, could it be fixed with the right dns server and a vpn?
I just switched to unlimited data plan on my mobile phone for 5 usd/month
good to be europoor
>>61427821
then they will just blanket throttle all that traffic too
>>61425760

>>61427872
Yes, most likely they will throttle all servers except their own and those of companies who pay them for "privileged connections".
>>61427821
They can just block the VPN sadly. Going to go to Tor (might get throttled), or I2P (might get throttled) if this shit starts going down.
>>61427142

>>61425998

>>61428549
my isp never cared about torrenting up until a few years ago when I got my first DMCA letter. up until 2014 i could download whatever. now I have to use a seedbox (or vpn), and always had a data cap for plans, with tiered speeds. this was done with 'net neutrality' being a law. I also live in a democratic city in a democratic state.
So where has net neutrality benefited me? I lost the ability to torrent, I gained data caps, and tiered pricing has always been a thing. So what will change? Spying? Selling data?

Comcast buys them out, or sues them into oblivion (doesn't matter if the lawsuit is frivolous the legal fees alone would be enough to bankrupt a startup), Comcast lobbies government to create more legal hoops for a startup to jump through to become a proper ISP, Comcast lowers prices to out-compete them in the short term but raises them back up after they're bankrupt.

Net neutrality has nothing to do with any of that though. It's literally just ensures all web traffic is given equal bandwidth.
Here's a what-if for you, say your ISP is run by a liberal and it is the only ISP in town, or at least the only good one. He is ideologically opposed to right-wing stuff and he wants to impose his ideology on his customers too.
No NN means he doesn't have to give any bandwidth to sites that have a right-wing agenda. He can simply deny you access to sites like Fox news or 4chan for instance, or he can charge you extra in exchange for providing bandwidth to these sites. With NN he's obligated to provide the bandwidth for them. Just consider that.

but >>61428982 says it's never even been implemented, and it was never a thing prior to 2015. if an ISP wants to fuck over 50% of their customer base, then they're willing to lose profits and bring in competition, it won't happen. People in this thread already said "corporations only care about the end dollar". If an isp ceo is a 'liberal' and hates right wing people, and decides to charge more for registered republicans or 'right wing' sites like breitbart or fox news, they will end up losing a lot of money from canceling customers.

The entire web was built without net neutrality.
See all other things classified as utilities and how well that is working. Water in Flint is pretty good these days... Rolling brownouts in the western US is great too.
The government is terrible at managing anything. We need a open and competitive internet. All of this government regulations forces out smaller or new ISPs from ever forming again.

That's the problem though in almost any given area in USA there's only one choice of provider for useable internet, usually it's Comcast. ISP's "conveniently" don't have overlapping territories in most areas so that way they can fuck you hard and dry but you have to take it. Problem is most Americans seem to believe in the magic of the free market. But if the internet is any indication of how competition actually works:
0) Existing guy in the market fucks everyone in the ass for a service.
1) Competitor builds a similar product with a slightly prettier interface
2) Competitor sells it cheaper (making a loss which is offset with investment money)
3) Once it is popular enough, it sells itself to big existing company.
4) Now it fucks its customers in the ass.
Much like health insurance you guys seem to love having ten shit options instead of a good one simply because of muh free market.

Not a lot. Also, if you think telco's rolled out infrastructure without government money, think again.
>The entire web was built without net neutrality.
What the fuck does this even mean? NN is about prioritizing services. This was not a thing 10 years ago. ATT saying DirectTV Now is exempt from data cap limits would be an example. Letting Netflix run @ 100 mbps while hulu is actively slowed to 10 mbps is NN.
>See all other things classified as utilities and how well that is working. Water in Flint is pretty good these days...
Nice Strawman! of the literally tens of thousands of utilities across the US, I'm sure you've come up with literally dozens of examples. Good on you.
>All of this government regulations forces out smaller or new ISPs from ever forming again.
Are they now? There are plenty of examples where a city tries to create an internet utility and big telco fights tooth and nail in the state to stop this. Even google was having issues with Fiber in Tenn. vs ATT.

Ok. Net Neutrality nixed. Will VPNs mean that traffic passing through VPN is neutral (assuming that VPN traffic isn't blocked outright)?
Should I just get a private server and set up OpenVPN on it?

Chances are that ISPs will be using a whitelist, not a blacklist.
So they'll keep a nice little database of IPs that get 'full speeds' and then if you want to put IPs there then you need to pay the ISP to put them there. So if you're facebook, you'll give the ISPs a good 20% share of your profits to keep your IPs in their whitelist.

It doesn't need to be overt fucking. For example, throttling sites they dislike - sites that don't pay the racket - until it looks like those sites are constantly laggy and buggy.
Also, you forgot to address the part where he explicitly said that there may be only one ISP in town. You don't get to choose when you don't have a choice. Unless you decide to get shitty wireless access, but 99.9% of disgruntled consumers won't go this far.

>>61425760
I see two possibilities. The worst case scenario is that ISPs actually start charging users for using certain websites (pic related). I don't think this would be very popular, because it would allow users to see that they are getting screwed.
The more likely scenario is that ISPs like Comcast go back to extorting money from sites like Netflix, throttling their speeds until they get a few million dollars out of it.

The second one is why the ISPs are pushing to end NN. The first isn't really an issue since due to monopoly, they're already pricing their services as high as they can possibly get away with. Tiering it to the customer doesn't really increase revenue.
Getting silicon valley to pay ransom demands of 'pay us money or have your online services throttled' is the entire reason that the ISPs want to get rid of NN.

I don't think that's true. How many of the ISPs were even doing that before net neutrality? How much would the ISPs even gain from such practice, compared to all the flack they would get. They think more long term, cut the regulation away early before it inevitably gets expanded. Whatever powers are given they always get expanded, it's like a law of nature in government.
Think tanks and lobby groups who cheer for deregulation always think long term, it's never about the small guy. They fight for reducing occupational licencing not because the big corporate donors give a fuck about the lone small entrepreneur, but because all the reduction of government rules on businesses end up benefiting them long term. Same with the obsession with protecting property rights. It's never about protecting the hillibillys farm from takings but to protect the institution which is absoluteness of property ownership.

>DENVER ā The Navajo Nation filed a lawsuit on Tuesday against the Environmental Protection Agency and several corporations, saying that poisoned water that flowed from a punctured Colorado mine last year disrupted hundreds of lives near a critical watershed.
The disaster, the federal suit says, has heightened economic and spiritual pain in a region hamstrung by poverty and drought. The tribe is seeking to hold the agency and corporations accountable, be made whole for at least $2 million spent on testing and alternative water sources and be compensated for lost revenue and psychological damages.
āWe cannot just sit back and let the E.P.A. do what theyāve been doing, just doling us pennies,ā said the president of the Navajo Nation, Russell Begaye, in a telephone interview. āThis river is the main river that gives life to the whole region, not just those who live around the river, but the entire nation. NN didn't guarantee unmetered connections - it only guaranteed that the data allotment you had could be used for anything indiscriminately.
If Comcast, TimeWarner, etc were going to fuck you and netflix - they could do it right now by setting you with a 50GB cap.

It's not a choice of freedom, it's knowing that literally our lawmakers are so corrupt they will fuck us over to get their cash. SO why the fuck do you want NN written on the backs of people literally this corrupt or are you just fucking braindead and think it will just get passed "as is" in either the House or the Senate? Even in 2008, the same shit would've went down in either House because politicians are the least trustworthy people in our republic. How did the goverment getting involved in the first place help the market? When does the government getting involved ever fix a market? The onoy job the government should have is to limit monopolies and anti vompetstive pracitices, yet they tend to do the opposite for (((reasons)))

>>61437602
>All it does it prevent ending the monopolies
it's an oligopoly and if removing NN won't change anything on that front. you're trying to divert attention away from the fact that they're infringing on privacy by bringing up issues unrelated to NN and blaming them on NN. If you're such a saint who wants to break up the oligopoly then why not start forcing restrictions on them instead of removing them then saying "it'll work itself out.". shill. that's why.

The banks failing wouldn't do much good for anyone. The people responsible would just get a nice severance package and then quietly leave. The bank itself would restructure or get acquired by another bank(making the original problem even worse) and continue on like before. The only people who would be hurt by it are regular poorfags that bought a house based entirely on hype by their bank. These people would be thrown out of their house and become homeless. Suddenly we'd have Obamavilles everywhere like Hoover's Hoovervilles. Then crime and disease would spread in these shanty towns and we'd have more instability.

Whether or not internet is a necessity or not is irrelevant. the thing is that the extension is a market onto itself. Without NN you're saying that this is perfectly fine. I pay these people for access to the internet. Paying them to control my browsing habits is retarded.

>Paying them to control my browsing habits is
It's already normal for most people to have their browsing habits controlled by the companies. Targeted ads and search results have been common practice for a decade. Most websites track your comments, likes, posts, searches and common keywords to show you a tailored result akin to "group think"
/g/ is a different matter, but the majority of the 2 billion people on the internet have no idea and/or don't care that it happens.
So this argument can easily be broken in a court of law by companies. "Everyone else uses our business model without complaining", regardless that you disagree, is in fact a valid legal argument.

>>61437837
The decision was made by representatives of both sides. The bailout process started under the Bush administration which was mostly republican controlled up until the last two years. Deregulating Wall Street occurred in a republican controlled congress during the Clinton administration. Small savings and loan banks were allowed to merge with larger banks thanks to the Reagan administration which is why banks got as large as they did. Both sides were responsible for the mess but one side actually took responsibility for it.

Represenatives have no power if you dont support them and voted them in, by definition, and you supported it.
>>61437968
It really all began with Nixon and Ford, whom had set up a legal chain of events which led to the Clinton Administration making lax the consumer loan protections (The Clinton admin's reason was because black people weren't getting as many loans per capita as whites), which culminated in a shit ton of people unable to actually afford their loans defaulting and fucking the system up.
But we don't talk about that in polite society. It was Bush Jr.! The republicans are all to blame!

>From where I'm sitting, I can choose from hundreds of ISPs.
You also don't have our oligopoly. competition can exist, but not by giving coporations unfettered power. the reason why oligopolies exist in the US in the first place is because of our ISPs using underhanded methods to kick out competition. (someone posted about it in this thread.) Giving away NN won't stop these ISPs from doing underhanded shit. So if you think taking NN is fighting the oligopoly then you're fighting Germany by burning London.

>If you don't like having your privacy and consumer rights violated then just don't use the internet!
Whether or not the internet is cheap is irrelevant. I didn't buy my car with the intention of Ford putting a camera on my dashboard and charging me to drive on certain roads. I don't pay for internet service with the intention of the company owning my data and influencing what I browse.
>>61437937

Now the shilling is out in full force to stop the repeal because its republicans

>No one even cared when NN passed
No one cares about oxygen until they're being strangled. You're seriously such a drone that you're only okay with it's repeal because republicans are the ones doing it. Vpn is certainly good for low profile crimes and dont start full investigations at the fbi

>>61438607
my point is that i can be done and the ones who are actually handling your data can do more than the fbi when it comes to tracking that data to its source
they dont need to know what all the data is if they can just track it to the source and view your computers contents
which is done to tens if not hundreds of people every day
I can't wait for NN to get BTFO in two weeks and the internet to be twice as nice as a result.

>>61438692
They cant track it down to the source if my ip doesnt leak. Cookies and other shit could leak information about me but my ip wont be visible while connected my to vpn. It would either have to be handed over by my vpn (which legally they have proved they dont keep logs), or they would have to decryped my data, which would only happen in a high profile case because it takes a lot of resources. Over all its a good level of security as long as your vpn is trustworhy
