I have a x230t, and I've been liking it, but I just found out that under Windows I cannot use the keyboard and click the trackpoint buttons at the same time. i only got it 2 days ago. its pretty solid, and will even do 720p youtube (in chromium at least) so in general web browsing (4chan, reddit, forums, its excellent). it was a little slow when i tried mint cinnamon but on xfce it runs great.

as i said, it needs a new battery. the current one only lasts around an hour and a half. you can get a 9 cell for 9 hours or a 6 cell for 6 hours.

how to libreboot without blowing up x200?

Is it worth it to try and sell an X230 without an SSD? I bought mine refurbed and upgraded to 8GB RAM and put a 500GB SSD in it but I want to keep the SSD for future desktop builds. It was borderline unusable when I got it, even with a 7200RPM HDD in it, so should I just try and find a used 120GB SSD to put in it or something?

I doubt I'll be able to sell it for more than I bought it for even with upgraded RAM and a SSD since I bought it from a company, but I just want to get rid of it and put that money towards something like a T430 or 440.

Hey, my fellow connoisseurs of deprecated tech, what's your opinion - is 50 EUR fair for an X300 with 4GB RAM, dead battery (not known if completely dead or perhaps holds like 5 minutes), cracked screen bezel, missing mesh on one speaker (but otherwise in visually decent shape)?
Stock 64GB SSD and PSU are present too.
>>
>>61430019
Put the original HDD and RAM, no need to upsell when people probably won't pay much for it. :(

The market fluctuates badly, 3 months and prices drop $50

>>61430424
Because when you are buying a state of the art ultrabook, it is such a remorse to see it take so long to load a program when it has 16Gb and an SSD

>>61430720
50EUR is like 80 American...
Tough to say, it will be costly to fix all that is bad.
64GB SSD isn't much, you can probably upgrade to mSATA and maybe resell that 1.8" SSD at a good price for someone in need.
>>
>>61430737
Wow, I didn't even expect the omniscient you to reply, what a pleasure. I can't care less about the mesh and the bezel, the SSD capacity is fine to me, however I'm aware about the mSATA possibility, speaking of which though - are there some more reliable mSATA to 1.8" adapters or whichever chink ones are good enough?
The only extra thing I might be spending on is a chink battery from a local shop for 40 EUR.
So essentially my question is nothing but this - is it a fair price for an X300 in the given shape?
Looks like even if buying the battery I still end up with an X300 with a new battery rather cheaper than buying one with used battery of unknown capacity on ebay.

So, today I realized my refurbished T420 has a bit of a... frankenstein battery. It's a 9 cell battery (confirmed by opening it, plus ghetto booty) with a 42T4754 sticker (25+), the barcode for a X60 / X61 battery (92P1170) and what seems to be a different barcode for a SL410 battery.
However, the battery firmware for it claims it's a Sanyo 42T4791.
With a Panasonic logo on it.
I mean, jesus, I knew this shit was refurbished when I purchased it but goddamnit.
I used to get 71,3Wh when i just bought, now I'm somewhere around 90% charge but can still get 4hours of use out of it. Apparently that's the correct amount for a 70++ battery.

Went from having a pretty ridiculously fast desktop rig, and gaming laptop but i don't give a shit about gaming anymore. So I sold both and went with this. I've just bought a X220 but the battery is shit. I need to replace it with a 9 cells but i'm quite new to this thinkpad stuff. How can I know that certain batteries would be correct for my thinkpad?
>>
>>61439378
Lenovo uses weird nomenclature for their batteries.

But the genuine Lenovo batteries for the X220 are called "29+" for the 6-cell and "29++" for the 9-cell.

You can also use the X230 batteries on it. 44+ for the 6-cell and 44++ for the 9-cell.

You'll probably be able to find new genuine 44's for cheaper than the 29's.

The tablet batteries will not work in non-tablets. Don't get anything other than the 29 or 44 series.

For roughly the same price (177 euros including shipping) I was shown a refurbished 12.5'' Thinkpad X220 with:

i5 2nd gen
320 gb
8g Ram
Intel hd 3000

Why would anyone settle for the Thinkpad while the Elitebook offers a newer gen I5 and a newer gen Intel HD videocard for merely 10 bucks more ? Also, the thinkpad is 2 years older.

Seriously? Why are Elitebooks superior?

Got a x220 installed arch and running xfce4. Sometimes when I run very intensive tasks such as compiling or starcraft 2, the mouse will move all slow then stop and then nothing responds not even the caps lock light. I installed arch for the first time but haven't done anything past the CLI yet. Part of me wants to stay with arch and part of me wants to use Xubuntu since I'm familiar with the package manager.

If I do stay with arch, should I stick with XFCE or try i3 gaps? Is i3 really that useful for workflow if most of my work is done in IDE's and the web rather than in a terminal?

Are they the celeron ones? You do know there are better specced ones too (up to 3rd gen i5, like what **30 thinkpads have), right?

If you're into
>the Real Business Experience™
and don't necessarily need the machine to be small and light, why don't you consider a T410/420/430, or a latitude E6410/6420/6430, or whatever are the model names for the respective generations of 84**p elitebooks; or 25**p elitebooks or E4310/6320/6330 latitudes if you really want a smaller one. The price difference between the generations is not huge. Probably the only good reason for wanting something with a 1st gen i cpu is a 16:10 screen. The X201s are particularly nice little machines with their 1440x900, but rare and therefore pricey.

Just bought a W530 to replace my T420. It has a i7-3720QM, quadro k1000, 180gb SSD, good condition (no scratches or dents), windows 10 pro.

User of T420s for nearly a year, switched to T430 yesterday.

I'll review the T420s, as it might be helpful for future buyers.
4gb, internal GPU only.

Pros:
>Light, the T430 is heavier and most consumer laptops I've handled are far heavier. Thinner than I expected too.
>The keyboard is really, really good.
>1600x900 is great, coming from bigger laptops with lower resolutions.
>Linux works fine, Fn keys work out of the box.
>Sturdy, I feel safe walking around with it.
>Runs 1080p 60fps youtube videos just fine.
>Not for gaming, but it does the job if you want it to. Runs League of Legends at 60fps, very low settings, ~67C. WoW WoTLK at 60fps, medium-low settings, ~63C. Hearthstone, medium settings, ~62C. Guild Wars 1, medium settings, ~60C.
>With dolby drivers, the speaker volume on Windows is amazing.
>Has a USB3.0 port, unlike the T420.
>Lets me charge my phone while the laptop is turned off.
>Idles at ~35C.
>Very easy to take keyboard off for cleaning.
>14" makes for a very pleasant form factor.

Cons:
>The screen angles are bad. You'll see fine, but someone next to you won't.
>It takes some configuration to have it on low temperatures.
>When you use ethernet and watch 1080p videos on youtube, it might buzz randomly. The CPU doesn't like to download the video at high speeds and render it too.
>After using the dolby drivers on Windows, Linux feels lackluster in the speaker volume.
>Reaching the CPU to change thermal paste is hell. You need to take everything down, including the screen. I never did it.
>Programs that require higher versions of OpenGL might be dodgy on Windows. For instance, a drawing program called Krita works fine on Linux but barely on Windows.
>>
>>61452324
Tips:
>Disable TurboBoost the shave 20C off your temperatures. On Windows, go to Power Options - Change Plan Settings - Change Advanced Power Settings and change the maximum processor state to 99%. If you're using Linux, you should be able to find how to easily.
>Use TPFanControl on Windows. Edit the configuration file according to your computer, as the default one is not too good. You can use mine if you need a better starting point, https://pastebin.com/AUKCRJ0d . On Linux, you can use Thinkfan, just know that it has a tendency to get your fan at high speeds for no reason at all if you don't configure it nicely.
>>
>>61438101
One important question though
Where do I stick this?
Loud and proud over the lenovo logo on the lid?
Quiet and out of sight on the bottom?
Maybe on the battery?

>>

>>
>>61442230
T60 or T430
Depends on how you look at it

For either
Check for supervisor passwords (go into bios and check if anything is password protected under the security page)
Check for physical damage
Check the specs just in case the seller was lying
Check the battery condition maybe use it as bargaining leverage

My T420 brightness control is acting weird on my ubuntu install. Basically the software control (the one found within the OS) doesn't seem to change the actual brightness but just adds a dark filter, while the brightness keys on the keyboard actually changes the brightness.

The really annoying part about this is that the brightness is reset every time the screen is turned off.

It's very worth it. The keyboard is so comfy; chalk that up to the durability and portability, and you've got yourself the perfect machine. Only gotta mod the screen to be fhd

I'm thinking of getting a 3rd generation X1 Carbon. Should I?

Why X230?

USB 3.0 and better gpu

How are those features useful for programming in visual studio?

Thanks mate, my bad. I was a little surprised by that number but not enough to check. Happens when you're reading /tpg/ too late at night.
Anyhow, the 3320M is more powerful than the 620M.
>>
I have an x230 and must admit, I'm a little sad I didn't get a x220 because the wifi card is ass, and I'm not experienced enough with souldering to remove the whitelist.

I need bt 4.0 on my t420. Is there a way to upgrade just the bluetooth module or should I pay up and get a wifi+bt card?

what's your problem to buy the american cord at walmart or wherever for like 2$?

I guess it's not a problem. I was just hoping I could use it right now

Picked up a Latitude E4300 today. had to clean off the ram and HDD slots but for $30 this was a complete steal. The keyboard is nice and thick, just like I like them. Going to install some distro later, but currently i'm testing it out on manjaro (had the .iso lying around).

The current mobo won't accept more than 4GB of ram, but I'm hoping that's just a BIOS issue that could be rectified with an update.

What do you mean by cleaning? Was it just full of dust or were the contacts corroded or smth?
>>
>>61459214
don't know anything about bluetooth and I've never had a use for it, but yes the bluetooth module on T420's is replaceable

I'm guessing you're looking for something like this
https://www.amazon.com/Bluetooth-60Y3303-Lenovo-Thinkpad-T530I/dp/B00J59HX70

It's underneath the palm rest, you undo one screw and pop it out.

The system said the memory was fucked so I just wiped off the contacts with a pencil eraser. After that, the comp booted but the HDD wasn't detected, so I just wiped that off with an eraser as well and blew into everything. after that everything went fine.

The laptop was dusty, however.
>>
Just got a X230 for free, corporate decom, but it is lacking a disk drive which is fine since I have a spare crucial MX200, and RAM. Which brands should I look out for if I want 2x8gb RAM?

Also I'll be doing the X220 keyboard swap mod if I manage to get the thing working in the first place.

How easy are Thinkpads to work on?
>>
>>61459863
G.Skill and Kingston have lifetime warranties on their RAM and are usually the cheapest.

>>61459911
almost everything is designed to be user serviceable/replaceable on them
>>
Any tips on detail cleaning a used Thinkpad?
Used one should be here tomorrow, I was going to pop off all the key and hit everything but the screen with isopropyl.
>>
>>61460317
Canned air or air compressor to remove dust and other detritus that may be unfortunately caught under the keyboard or other crevices. Otherwise use isopropyl to wipe down and remove as much organic material of the previous user from the general surfaces.

Hi, so I've got an HP EliteBook 8460p. It's great but I keep running out of memory.

Is there a way I can expand it by installing a second drive inside the laptop? I'm a bit of a newbie regarding the installation but it doesn't seem like it would be that hard.
>>
>>61461152
memory or storage space?
Yes, you can replace dvd drive with another 2,5" drive. How about you just replace the main HDD instead?

>>61461176
Storage space mostly but I wouldn't mind upgrading
Is there a way to migrate files directly?

completely unrelated to previous, what OS are you installing on it and what was your decision that that's the best OS to run on an X200 based on?

>>61461402
yes, just google the gpu (intel hd 3000)
>>
>>61452460
T430s default battery is garbage. You might want to consider getting the ultrabay battery option instead as that's the only option for expandability.

If you do end up with a locked bios the supervisor password can be (somewhat) easily reset without having to read the EEPROM.

>>61453744
You could go for one of the T-series. Also, if you're having issues with the charger it's likely the contact springs are messed up or the daughterboard's connection cable got unseated from the mobo. Do you have experience soldering? You could just put on a new connector for 5 bucks.
>>61453849
Battery life is absolutely amazing on T450 and up but performance really isn't all that different. >>61454955
Buy a manufactured-for-OEM samsung ssd off ebay for dirt cheap. "Mz7TE" will get you an unlabelled 840 evo for ~40ish bucks.
>>61460317
Don't use isopropyl you'll dissolve some of the plasticizer in the ABS of the caseing degrading it a bit.

Had my thinkpad for years, but never actually thought about active HDD protection. Is there a default module that deals with that on linux?

Thanks for the reply m8. From what I've seen the FHD mod for the t420 is no longer supported and AFAIK t430 only goes up to 1600x900. Is there a model you recommend? The x220 would have been perfect for me if it was FHD and I know batch 3 of the mod will be ready soon but I'm interested in a slightly larger screen size.
