thanks for killing a thread for this
Here's what I do:
ffmpeg -i -n "your gif here.gif" -c:v libvpx -auto-alt-ref 0 -minrate 1M -maxrate 1M -b:v 1M "webm file here.webm"
To do a whole directory at once:
for i in *.gif; do ffmpeg -i -n "$i" -c:v libvpx -auto-alt-ref 0 -minrate 1M -maxrate 1M -b:v 1M "${i%.gif}.webm"
Produces webm files of reasonable quality

If you want permanent threads, go to reddit.

say I want to make a 3 minute webm with sound. what resolution/bitrate should I aim for if I want to keep it below 3 mb?
>>61427812
>what bitrate
just calculate it faggot
3 MB = 24 Mb
24000 Kb / 180s = 133 Kb/s.
there you go
>>61427812
-b:v 25165824/X*0.975 -maxrate 25165824/X*0.975
x is the time of the clip and that's for a 2.9 webm without sound, lower the values to add the small sound part
