Ryzen has been out for a while now and it seems that Intel can't compete in terms of price/performance.
Tell me why I shouldn't fall for the Ryzen meme?
I'm considering upgrading my i5 2500k to a Ryzen 7 1700 with DDR4 3200mhz memory.
Thoughts?
>>61420447
I got an 1600 and it's better than i expected.
>>61420545
I was originally considering the 1600, but I might as well shell out for an 8core/16thread for what I'm doing.
Since working in the software industry I've noticed programming compile times and IDE responsiveness is very considerable even for a decent intel i7 system. I think the 8core/16threads are really going to help with this.
Also, I'm fairly certain I'm getting CPU bottle necked when I have full quality streams open on twitch while playing games. Chrome uses like 20% of my i5 2500k while watching on source quality.
>>61420447
Should be a solid upgrade. The 1700 is still on sale I think.

If you run VMs Intel performance is still better, Ryzen is a bit unstable at the moment with a lot of VM software, although it's improved a lot from launch.

I'm thinking about B350 mobo.
This is probably retarded thinking, considering I've never had two graphics cards at once.
But what B350 mobo is capable of crossfire?
I'm looking in the $100-200 range.
Basically I need lots of Sata3's, at least 1 PCIE 1x slot, up to 3200Mhz memory, and ideally crossfire because I'm autistic and like options.
TLDR: What is the best mobo for $100-200?
>>61420623
There's something seriously fucked with your PC. Chrome's using just 4% while streaming source on my 2500k.

>>61424035
This is true. It's good to note that the second card has to route through the mobo chipset and doesn't link directly to the CPU though. I don't know what the performance hit of that will be though.
>>61424075
I forgot to add that X370 has both slots connected directly to the CPU without routing through the mobo chipset.
>>61420447
>why I shouldn't fall for the Ryzen meme?
Well, first of all, there's still a problem with some motherboards and some RAM sticks. Mine didn't even boot without a BIOS update.
Secondly, it still segfaults when you load all cores and threads 100%, see
https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-1061546-postdays-0-postorder-asc-start-200.html?sid=5d80245099ab76e3e113fdfadff2015d
This is something at affects a whole range of motherboards and CPUs. Put more than 100% on all available threads and you will get problems with gcc, ffmpeg and a few other things (not that many things will put this much load on your system).
inb4 fags claim I'm just shilling: fuck you, see picture related. Go find the root cause instead. I'm all for getting a motherboard BIOS update or a linux kernel update or something that actually fixes this.
I would definitively not put a Ryzen CPU on co-located servers or anything like that.
>>61424008
>This is probably retarded thinking
I'm really considering any good mobo in the price range of $100-200 which is actually what I meant.
B350's seem to be in that range. I'm not sure if there is even one that crossfires properly in this range though.
>>61424027
Sandy Bridge is worse than Ryzen in every way except maximum clockspeed.. Ryzen has the same IPC as Haswell/Broadwell so clock for clock it's better than SB, and destroys it in multithreading.

>>61424178
I've been rendering with ffmpeg in windows for months with no issues. Also compiling stuff through VS but obviously not gcc so it's not relevant.
>>61424165
Here's proof, you have to overclock Sandy Bridge to 4.7 GHz to just barely beat Ryzen at 4.0GHz. And these are release Ryzen figures, gaming performance has slightly improved since then so I wouldn't be surprised if it was impossible for a 2600K to outperform Ryzen without a custom loop.
>>61424178
I'm making a shitty game in clion which is compiled by mingw(which is gcc port on windows) and i had 0 issues.
>>61424243
It's still barely an upgrade for single thread performance.
>>61424163
I got an x370 board for 170/180ish which can do crossfire.
The whole point of b350 mobos is that you can't crossfire/sli, that's what the x370 boards are for
>>61424331
B350 can theoretically do Crossfire it's just the scaling won't be good since you're only using 4 lanes and the PCi-e lanes are coming from the chipset, not the CPU. SLI requires a minimum of 8 lanes from the CPU so it's impossible to do on B350.

If your son has requested a new "processor" from a company called "AMD", this is genuine cause for alarm. AMD is a third-world based company who make inferior, "knock-off" copies of American processor chips. They use child labor extensively in their third world sweatshops, and they deliberately disable the security features that American processor makers, such as Intel, use to prevent hacking. AMD chips are never sold in stores, and you will most likely be told that you have to order them from internet sites. Do not buy this chip! This is one request that you must refuse your son, if you are to have any hope of raising him well.

Ryzen is not Intel and you can't OC the same way. Since it combines the MC into the SoC it has more memory training duty and you'll have to watch the load line voltage of the SoC and CPU and RAM to keep things stable. There are also many memory timings you can tweak to affect stability.
https://youtu.be/vZgpHTaQ10k?t=3m56s
That's a video from an AMD engineer talking about RAM OC'ing Ryzen.
Ryzen does alright by me. I suspect my chip can do 3.9ghz with some extensive hand tuning (hell with the 1403 bios I think I could push at least 3466mhz out of the ram) but 4ghz simply will not happen even on suicide voltages.

Good, now keep in mind that voltage readings from software are usually off. For example, in CPU-Z on one of my Ryzen 7 1700X systems it reads at 1.330 under load but with a DMM I measure 1.411. So if you're near whatever your comfortable max is with a software reading, back off more than you think. Or use a DMM and get an accurate reading. LLC can make things harder for software voltage readings as well in my experience. If you increase LLC increase the choke frequency as well to reduce the return spike.

I just finished a 1800x build and been running for about 2 weeks. Not a "fanboy", but have always liked AMD for price/performance and durability/stability. I'm really digging it and haven't OC'd it yet. Runs rock solid stable and can multi task without a hiccup. I game, but have older games because I wait for steam sales and refuse to pay more than 20 bucks for a game so it runs them just fine. Running a 980ti and not sure if I want to get a 1080ti or wait for Vega, but Vega I'll want to get a new monitor. Already blew 800 bucks on a Rog Swift monitor when it came out.
I was running skylake which was fine, but always had freezes and BSOD that I could never pinpoint the problem. Intel has always been very fickle for me in my experiences for some reason. All in all, I like my Ryzen better than my I7, which is just gathering dust now.

>shill 24/7 for AMD, a company that has literally only been kept alive because of gamers
What the fuck is wrong with /g/? Businesses and server companies didn't keep AMD alive. OEM's took Intel's bribes. Macs use Intel. Thinkpads use Intel. Everyne uses Intel, except gamers. AMD's fanboys are so zealous they bought some FX CPU's despite being flaming trash in gaming. Gamers bought Phenom and Phenom II CPU's even when AMD's marketshare was declining due to lack of OEM sales. The best thing about AMD's APUs? That they have Radeon graphics instead of Intel's Frankenstein graphics licensed from Nvidia. Fuck, console margins aren't high, but that was an important source of income for them. It was gamers who kept the x86 from turning into a nightmare monopoly by Intel (and even then it almost did effectively) Intel would have either been split up forcibly or they would have to license x86 to Microsoft or Samsung. Gamers are the only reason you faggots can buy a Thinkpad that's not marked up 100% because AMD went out of business due to zero support from you faggots. It's easy to make fun of gaming but clearly AMD owes a lot to their ridiculously zealous fanbase who never stopped supporting them since the Athlon days.

I'm pretty sure it's at 1.35, but I when I rebooted I though it was set to the 2133 defaults, so I'm not 100% sure. Is there any easy way to check in Windows? CPU-Z is also reporting my timings as 16-17-17-35, but I know the XMP profile uses 15-17-17-35. WHen I was trying custom timings I set the voltage to 1.4, so it might be there instead. The weird thing is I tried those timings and it looped, set it to XMP and it looped, set the timings back but only tried 2400 and it just sat with a blank screen through a shit and a glass of chocolate milk so I did a hard reset. Then it reset to 2133, I looked through a few pages, and then just gave up and it instantly booted. But when I checked task manager and CPU-Z reported 2933
The RAM I got only differed in the part of the product number that refers to the number of modules in the kit. I also got it bundled with the mobo and CPU, and it was impossible to find any of the exact QVL pns so I just settled with it.

As far as I can see, AMD is cutting their profits for better marker share and consumer confidence. Buying into a Ryzen now is not a bad investment, but keep in mind that one good product from their side doesn't mean everything they bring out in the future will be to the same standard, or at least priced as competitively.
Its obvious that once AMD has a bigger portion of the CPU market, they'll hike prices, lower quality, or both. That said, if you're building a PC today, an AMD Ryzen CPU is a no-brainer, plus Ryzen got discounted even further on some online stores, they're practically giving you free money for the product.
If I go with ryzen 1600 I would be stuck buying amd gpus unless I decided to upgrade my mobo

>1200 x 2 = 3200
>>61445528
No retarded.
It's possible to oc even 7900x mildly without Holocaust, even more 7800-7820x these run consistently up to 5ghz.
Stock alone is areadly good, and you can oc just the mesh with no thermal penalty
>>61445570
Yeah, but anon legitimately though he was running at 1200 MHz
>>61445575
Stock alone is worse than Skylake and Broadwell
>>61445530
What shilltel thinks is happening: Epyc isn't as good at this one thing, AMD BTFO! INTEL WINZZZZZ!
What is actually happening: Epyc isn't as good at this one thing, but is the same or better at everything else at a lower price, so unless you absolutely need that one thing, it's pointless to even consider Xeons.
>>61445550
An artifical one specifically designed to showcase Epyc's weakness. Like the database test where the entire database fits in L3. Real databases are GB in size .. http://www.anandtech.com/show/11544/intel-skylake-ep-vs-amd-epyc-7000-cpu-battle-of-the-decade/18
>>61445575
Source? Benchmarks? Anything? Why didn't any of this come to light during the intial review of the hardware? Also what >>61445680 said
>>61445715
Yes because l3 latency is a minor issue, no loads use l3. It's just flto decorate CPU
>>61445748
Why don't you actually read the anandtech review before you sit there spewing out more bullshit? If Epyc was only good at Cinebrunch it would be pretty fucking obvious. (Cinebrunch isn't even a good server benchmark in the first place)
>>61445791
If he had any interest, he would have read it already. He's just shilling like a good little goy.
>>61445530
> mfw brainlets now can speak on the implications of memory access latency and core communication latency as if they have a PHD in multi-core CPU architecture design because they copy/pasta charts from e-celebs/review sites.
Get some formal education in multi-core CPU architecture design and then get back to me about isolate metrics such as these. It all matters on how the overall architecture is designed and how data flows through it which is why EPYC wipes intel's ass in the real-world benchmarks.
You have to pick and chose +/- aspects of your architecture. What matters is how it all comes together. It's like comparing raw HP numbers and forgetting about RPM/HP curves whereby some platforms deliver great amounts in the low/mid range and tail off at the high and others are all top-end power. One is a complete sh*t experience and the other a dream.
Some will dream desu.
Others will starve.
Does Ryzen Pro have an explicit release date? Interested in TSME (and supported motherboards).
>>61446061
Nope still "second half of 2017".
>>61446096
Great. Guess we'll see if that or Lendacky's patch shows up first. Fuck.
Got my motherboard today, expecting a 1700 and ram later
>>61447883
>>61424813
Dumbfuck, you need to multiply your cpuz memory speeds by two for your actual ram speed. Sounds like either your over clock didn't hold, or you failed to properly set up your ram in bios. Setting ram speeds in bios has been a thing since ddr3, who cares.

This one. I don't know if the R at the end changes anything
>>61420447
Ryzen is infinitely better than jewpoo shit
>>61442775
>>61442879
I'll play it safe and manually set it to 1.07V and 2933Mhz memory now
But I doubt that the 1.225V would have harmed my CPU
>>61451274
On a side note, power consumption and temps have decreased quite a bit
>>61445972
People see those latency charts as network latency which is exactly why the stealth marketers use them. "Muh CS:GO".
It unbeliavable how good Ryzen is when seeing what shills criticize about them. It seems Intel can compete with x99 (x299 is a fucking joke, same as platinum membership xeons) platform but even then prices are ridiculous compared to AMD.
>>61450286
R=Red
>>61451643
That makes sense.
>>61424813
1200mhz means 2400Mhz (with dual channel RAM)
>>61422577
what makes the 2500 so great?
>>61425291
Ryzen 7 owner here, bought generic 3000mhz corsair RAM, still disnt manage to run it higher than 2633 together with my stable 3.9 ghz OC.
I managed to run it at 2933 once but my iverclock failed then, and the system wasnt stable at all even though it was at stock clocks.
Still happy with it, best cpu ever in terms of price/performance ...
>>61453216
does ryzen even support 3000? not sure with all the shitposting around.
just curious, planning to get 3200 myself later.
>>61453296
With AGESA 1.0.0.6 it's supposed to support up to 4000 MHz. YMMV.
http://www.game-debate.com/news/22985/amd-ryzen-agesa-1-0-0-6-update-adds-support-for-memory-clocks-up-to-ddr-4000mhz

>In addition to the cap, AMD has also added support for a greater variety of menu. Previously, AM4 support memory in 266MT/s increments. This has now been reduced to 133MT/s, ensuring a larger number of memory kits will be able to run at their actual rated speed, rather than dropping down to the nearest support increment.
that's what I meant, nice to see it's changed. surprised they're still at 1006 tho
