Kiwi here. Surely if a tiny, poor island nation like us can achieve 100Mb/s, the rest of the world can too?

I get upwards of 200mbps in New England, only cause Comcast came to my house and took my personal router saying it was theirs and my lease was up.... I live south of Manchester in New Hampshire where basically the only two ISPs are FairPoint (now Consolidated Communications) who only offers DSL and Cuckcast.
My town is too autistic to put in the fiber that FairPoint has been offering for years because apparently they want to keep it "rural" even though they're building a multi-million dollar development where some old apple orchards used to be.

I was talking about how OP says Mb/s and not Mbps. There is a difference you know.
>>
>>61419077
If there is, colour me surprised. So, tell me, what is the difference between Mb/s and Mbps because every usage of them I can see on the internet points to them being interchangeable.
>>
>>61419104
MB/s = megaBYTES/sec, a byte is 8 bits
Mbps = megaBITS/sec
MB/s = Mbps * 8

>costs an arm and leg

No it's not of any indication of internet speeds here. Infrastructure is extremely uneven here and I lost the fibre-laying lottery.
>>
>>61419104
My general understanding is that Mb/s refers to Megabytes per second while Mbps refers to Megabits per seconds. This is a difference of factor 8.

What are you talking about? Who asked you about whether it's bits or bytes? Are you retarded? We're discussing whether changing the '/' to a 'p' changes things because it fucking doesn't.

>>61419147
In that case, I'm sorry to say that you're wrong. It's used with a capital B in both cases for bytes and not bits.
>>
>>61419148
i can also get a gigibit line to my house if i wasnt a poorfag
>>
>>61419147
Your understanding is wrong.
Mbps = Mb/s
MB/s = Mbps * 8 or Mb/s * 8
>>
>>61419155
But even my browser says Mb/s when referring to megabytes and not megabits. So Mbps is something else here.
>>
>>61419129

>>
>>61419190
Then whoever made that part of your browser made a mistake. Seriously, you can look it up on google like I've been doing this whole time or you can just apply some basic logic. Either way will get you to the correct conclusion.
>>
>>61419224
Well then thanks for the correct answer.
>>
>>61419190
"ps" stands for "per second"
"/s" stands for "per second"
"ps" = "/s"

These are the same thing, different way of denoting "per second":
"Mbps" = "Mb/s"
"MB/s" = "MBps" (ain't nobody uses this shit)

"b" ≠ "B" (bit ≠ byte)
hence
"Mb" ≠ "MB" (megabit ≠ megabyte)

So it follows that
"Mbps" ≠ "MB/s"

Sorry for going slightly off topic.

speedtest . net /beta is shit for speedtesting though

you can't even select servers that far away from you which will not display accurate results.

I get 2ms ping here but if I connect to US or European servers from other sites I get like 200+ ms ping. That's really bad for streaming, A/V communication and gaming in general.

Same here, FTTN. I can't wait, gonna get iinets 100/50 just because "fuck you internet speeds".

>>
>>61422429
This is exactly what I was saying above. Local tests are useless if most of the contents you use are hosted far away. It is not the accurate representation of your internet speed, especially if you don't live in the US because most contents are hosted in US while very few countries only have mirror servers that only for few big websites.
>>
>>61422507
> if most of the contents you use are hosted far away

That speed test server is within 5 miles of amazon's east coast servers.

I am pretty much right up against most major websites in the US that aren't hosted on the west coast, and most major things are hosted on both east and west coast.

Either NYC or Washington DC area. I am 3-10ms ping to both places.

>>
>>61422727
You're unfortunately pretty far from any big cities or tech areas, so it might be awhile before you get fiber.
>>
>>61422878
Yep, it really sucks but like I said I'm pretty happy with 60Mb/s it's a hell of a lot better then DSL and I only pay $50 a month
>>
>>61422507
>most contents are hosted in US

Is that true?

I am fairly sure most data centers are near Hamburg or Amsterdam because those cities have the biggest internet exchanges?
>>
>>61423091
>Hamburg

Sorry, meant Frankfurt of course.
>>
>>61423091
Lol, i mean, there are certainly servers there, but if you think google or amazon's MAIN data centers are in europe you're a bit retarded.

They certainly have a large presence for european consumers. But the majority of their servers are hosted in the US, and unless there is a local version in europe, whatever you're trying to access will have to go to the US.

MOST commonly used things are available i europe, youtube, most amazon services, etc. So for major services, you wont notice a difference.

However smaller websites that use Amazon's AWS for hosting are NOT going to pay to be hosted locally in europe if 99% of traffic is coming from US only.
>>
>>61423247
>the majority of their servers are hosted in the US

source?
>>
>>61423348
For amazon, just go to the AWS status page.

The server list for the US is larger than any other region.

Further, the company is BASED in the US. the VAST majority of their employees are also based in the US, of course the majority of the infrastructure is also in the US.

Not to mention the US intelligence apparatus uses Amazon servers for on-demand computing and other needs. If you work at an amazon data center in northern Virginia most positions require you to have a top secret security clearance because there is a huge number of servers set aside for the US intelligence cloud.

>the VAST majority of their employees are also based in the US, of course the majority of the infrastructure is also in the US.

You don't need that many employees for a data center.
And you can place them anywhere as long as you have good connections and cheap electricity.

>>
>>61423489
Good job ignoring the most significant portion.

The US intelligence apparatus piggy backs on AWS servers. It's on demand, meaning if they need more servers, they'll spin more up, or switch public servers over to doing whatever needs to be done.

Besides the very large numbers of servers already set aside for this particular use case, these servers being on demand means when they aren't in use, they can be spun up with instances for public facing content.

If you're actually so deluded to think there are more amazon and google servers in Europe than in the US, lol.

Now there might be more servers in TOTAL in europe, but MANY simply wouldn't be owned by mega corps like amazon and google.
>>
>>61423621

>>
>>61419522
>>61419427
Say if your connection has to pass through a junction box that's not equipped for that rate (such as one I have to pass through that was made in the 70's or something, no matter what my ISP technicians do, they can't get it to exceed 7.7Mbps, however it has near zero latency as my ping is never above 10ms.. it's slated for replacement in 2 years).
You would see a major decrease in your data rate, besides the ping bump.

However the other guy trying to argue with you is just being an autistic ass.
>>
>>61423832
>>61423815
also i have access to 2gbps, but it's pointless without having server equipment since most things have 1gbps NICs.

>>61423868
>I don't think America's biggest internet exchange even ranks in the top 20 globally lol.
wow you've confirmed yourself as retarded.

Of the top 20 exchanges the US participates in 2 of the top 3. And is the sole country for 2 others (besides canada on the Seattle exchange) and is a participant in a handful of others in the top 20.

Not to mention exchanges in the US are VERY different from the EU, our population is MUCH further afield than in europe where having a few hubs makes sense since you're all crammed into a tiny geographic location.

You don't think you quite grasp what "combined" means.

You see: all data being transferred in USA + Japan + Korea + Canada + South America + rest of Asia + Australia + Southern Europe + Eastern Europe + Africa...is LESS than the data being transferred in just the North-West of Europe.

7.4 billion people have "less internet" than 100 million people.
