Can I trust eraser to get rid of things thoroughly?

Which erasure method does /g/ use and why?
>>
>>61411456
Reminder that one pass of random data is enough.
>>
>>61411533

Yeah I tend to go for one pass. For fun I tried to let my the office head of IT security try to retrieve files of my old drive (just to see if he could do it).

After one run of DoD 7-passes and one random data pass I gave it over to him.

He wasted a full 8 hour work day (it was a slow day) and still came up with nothing of value.

Is he just incompetent or is this really good enough?
>>
>>61411456
One pass with Heidi's is all you need. Test by running handyrecovery or recusal against disk afterwards

The Microwave
>>
>>61411584
In fairness yes, he probably should be able to come up with something. That something is probably just random data though unless he is FBI-tier. And even then there's no real guarantee he'd get anything. DoD is good enough unless your literally committing high treason.
>>
>>61411584
>Is he just incompetent or is this really good enough?
It's good enough. The misconception about multiple passes came from a theoretical paper from 90s.
>>
>>61411584

If he's head of IT security he's probably pretty good at his job. Of course this is just guessing and assuming you don't work for 7 Eleven or something and your "head of IT security" also doubles as a janitor.
>>
>>61411615

Really? For someone who doesn't know much about this stuff, what was the theory?
>>
>>61411663
Reading signal deviations using magnetic force microscopy. Hard to explain in short, but look here:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gutmann_method
>>
>>61411607
>DoD is good enough unless your literally committing high treason.

And if you're committing high-treason you're probably better off just buying a microwave.

The cost of the microwave will be the least of your problems.
>>
Yes, but remember to erase unused space and enable erase cluster tips.
>>
>>61411731

God damn that's a tough read. Thanks for the info though. Interesting stuff.
>>
>>61411846
The TLDR is that it was only a concern for the low density drives they had back then. Todays drives have such high density that this isn't a concern any more.
>>
>>61411839
>erase cluster tips

What does that do?
>>
>>61411884

Neat, thanks. Now I know.

Wanna' be really safe? Do like I did. Buy a nice industrial-sized bottle of hydrofluoric acid.

Whenever I need a drive to go away permanently, I fill an empty plastic container and gently put my drive in there.

A few hours and voila. Of course YMMV depending on the concentration. Dump it in a sewer when you're done.

I've been crushing my old ones with a hydraulic press then chucked them in the ocean, since I live just a few minutes away from it

Eraser works, but if you want a file shredder that doesn't require admin privileges, look into DPShredder.
>>
One of my friends told me pressing Delete doesn't actually delete it, you actually have to press SHIFT+Delete, been doing it ever since. Semper Fi.
>>
We have a documented procedure on hard drive disposal at work.
When we were being inspected for our ISO audit, the auditor asked for a random procedure to inspect and asked that we follow it - he ended up with our hard drive disposal one.

The instructions are:
1. Place hard drive on hard surface
2. Hit hard drive with hammer
3. Repeat step 2 as necessary

The inspector didn't find it very funny.

If one pass is enough how come we have 7 pass setups by people like Schneir approved for DoD and of course Guttman's 35 pass wipe?

Also how different is it to wipe data from an ssd compared to a conventional HDD?
>>
>>61411456
best way to destroy data permanently?

attach a label to it that says "important backup". it'll be corrupt beyond repair before you finish sticking the label on.
>>
>>61412796
i'm going to call bullshit on this. nobody with three working brain-cells fucks around with hydrofluoric acid.
>>
>>61411456
I use full HD encryption. I reformat once a year. Nothing is recoverable that hasn't been backed up.

>If one pass is enough how come we have 7 pass setups by people like Schneir approved for DoD and of course Guttman's 35 pass wipe?
Paranoia.

I know that one CIS country has the following procedure:
-First a technician comes and eject drives from sealed cases that are protected from tamper;
-Then technician puts HDD(s) in a secure container;
-After delivery HDD(s) are wiped with a goverment certified software;
-Then drives are physically destroyed using a shredder.
It's fucking insane.

Zeroing out the data is enough to keep it from being read the normal way. If you think about it the purpose of a hard drive is to read the same thing you wrote on it earlier.

More complicated erasing methods are to protect against more sophisticated threats. If you have something that is magnetized one way for a while and magnetize it the other way it will have a slightly different magnetization than something that got magnetized the same way twice. So unless your tech had equipment to do something like read the analog signal from the hdd head and do some signal processing on it or stick it in an electron microscope(i think) there was nothing he could do.

Frankly if you've come under that much scrutiny as a private citizen you've already fucked up. Some of these hard drive scrubbing protocols are neat from a physics perspective and are often designed with the details of the hdd technology in use in mind. They are meant for people with data that's worth going through all that bullshit to recover by outside parties like governments who worry about state actors and businesses who worry about state actors and industrial espionage. If the government ever cracks open your hdd and tries to do something like this you're most likely already in jail awaiting trial.

Last time I checked modern sata hdds can be erased securely by a pass of 0 and a pass of ones. Those old bit patterns applied to hdd storage tech that is no longer in use. I just write over my file with a stream of random bits.
>>
>>61411584
>office head of IT security

There's not really anything he could do aside from run the normal freeware data recovery apps anyways. There's no secret terminal command they teach IT experts to restore overwritten files. I doubt your company has hundred million dollar NSA tier atomic magnetic black magic machines.

In any case, unless you have foreign intelligence on your HDD, one pass is fine. It's even good enough if you're a child porn ring leader since normal law enforcement doesn't have the money, hardware, and time to dedicate to attempting to recover even fragments of data in that state.
>>
>>61411456
Wipefile, pretty slim program doing exactly what I want and nothing more.
>>
>>61413970
Not him, but it's not a difficult compound to use. Considering the guy claims to have access to industrial-quantities of the stuff, there's a chance he knows the basics of how to handle chemicals like it. Of course this is just guess work, but I have a coworker who does the exact same thing. I've even let him fry a few of my old drives.

>the reason the Earth is dying in one post
>>
>>61413305

Smacking it around is a bad idea. The external shell might take a beating, but I've seen sledge hammers being taken to harddrives and the data still being recoverable.

Physical force is a meme.
>>
>>61416346

Can confirm, Norwegian army does this exact thing.

Wasn't this shit discredited years ago? Get Eraser. At least that's known for doing it's job.
>>
>>61416455
>physical force

At best you're going to get a nicely damaged case. Most of the time the data is very retrievable.
>>
>>61416592
>>61416992

Both of these are pretty good answers. Technically though, there are ways one can still get the data back.

While I'm no expert, people I know who are claim that "nothing is ever TRULY gone" if you have the right equipment.

The most surefire way is to first use a software solution and give it plenty of time to finish, then resort to something like >>61412796 to absolutely ruin the hardware.
>>
>>61411456
DBAN
single pass
>>
A lot of the suggestions ITT really do stem from little knowledge. And I don't even really blame /g/ for that.

The way the government and/or the military go about retrieving files from seemingly corrupted or otherwise ruined drives is something they keep close to the chest in most cases.

Hell, why do you think so many of the erasure methods are named after countries/government branches?

The best we can do is guess and speculate, but that's just the nature of the file deletion and retrieval. We put our faith in our software and the FBI puts their faith in their software, and then we see who comes out on top.

What is the fastest reliable way to put an SSD out of commission?
I've always drilled and hammered my HDDs, but never had to destroy an SSD.
>>
>>61420826

The most effective way is >>61412796. That shit will never see the light of day after a few hours in the pool.

That being said, run Eraser and go for a full DoD 7-pass and overwrite with random data first. That'll make sure that even if something is salvageable after the acid, it'll only be junk.

Make sure you know what you're doing with the acid though. It's an industrial chemical and shouldn't be attempted until you know what you're doing.

>>
>>61424278

Are you thinking that the expanding ice will ruin the harddrive? Now I haven't tried but won't that just break the lunchbox?
>>
>>61425076
if its a non helium filled drive, water should get inside the drive and destroy the platters when expanding. if probatly will not destroy the box, just pop the lid open
>>
>>61425145

Hm, I never thought of this, but in either case the water expansion might not be enough I'm guessing. Still, this was a unique way to cleanse the sins of the past so I might try this with a dead drive.

Has anyone ITT tried it?
>>
>>61424278
>>61425145
I don't think this will work. The plates of a harddrive are pretty strong, to the point where a lot a high-powered nail-gun couldn't penetrate them. I don't think a little expanded water will do the trick.
>>
>>61425289

Ice expands water by 9% (give or take). Those sweet 9% will break any drive.
