desu if you should know before buying an offshore that that case will get knock everywhere. If you like it then just wear it daily, normies will give compliment just because it's big, scratches give the watch more character.

>normies will give compliment just because it's big
honestly the only watch that normies will comment on is a Rolex from my experience, nobody knows what the hell ap is

>>61402710
There are two types of people in this world. People that like the Calatrava and tasteless plebs.
>>61402738
Dufour's simplicity is miles more interesting than that particular calatrava, so no. There's a way to do simple watches right.
>>61402759
Oh yeah I like the enamel dial Simplicity better than the Calatrava as well.. too bad it's an order of magnitude more expensive and can't even be purchased. I wouldn't say miles more interesting... Just slightly different design philosophies. I think the Simplicity is the most perfect watch ever made but that doesn't mean i don't love the Calatrava as well.
>>61402710
That's just the original calatrava design, there are so many modern variants.
What do you guys think about this?

>>61404312
i said the movements are great, but the case design is bad, which it is (ie there is no case design).
if the movement is all you care about then they are the best. However, one of the the other highly respected brands top watch, the AP Royal Oak has a very "meh" movement for the price, and the focus is the case and the finishing.
>>61400707
Surprised they let you have anything sharper than a crayon.
>>61404424
They do have case design! I and many others like their designs. Simple designs like the ones they make are not at all easy to pull off. That is why the wealthiest people on earth have been buying them for over 100 years you fucking intolerable pleb.
>>61404417
i just feel like its either a status symbol to show off to other rich fags, or its the movement you care about. i don't see why anyone with an appreciation for design would like one. However, you obviously have your reasons

>>61404312
>how you are on a technology forum and not able to distinguish the technological merit of PP is beyond me.
Nobody is denying the technological merits of the brand, but watches are accessories first and technological gadgets second. PP might very well be one of the most important watchmakers still in existence but almost all of their watches are straight up ugly, or unexciting at best.
If I'm gonna put 20k euros in a watch, I want it to be visually stunning, not bland as fuck or ugly. And if you think a watch needs to be flashy and gaudy to catch the eye, then you have no taste.
>>61405688
I wouldn't expect to get it for much less than that. Tritium is a real niche thing and you have to pay up for it. If you want a cheaper tritium watch look at Carnival/Jianianhua, they make a decent ETA quartz tritium watch for $60-$90, depending on model and where you get it.
>>61405737
Yeah , I hope that's fixable?
>>61405746
>watches are accessories first and technological gadgets second
this is incredibly subjective, you can't just say this as fact
>>61405761
the watch has a ton of issues - hand fallen off, flag parts fallen off, messed up caseback screws. May also very well be fake - I can't find any example with that color date window or with those subdials (the legitimate examples you posted have different looking subdials). It's going to be an uphill value to get any monetary value out of it.
>>61405778
They are for 99% of people. Most people buy a watch because they want to see something nice whenever they look at their wrist and might additionally want other people to notice the nice looking thing attached to their wrist.
The practical usefulness of watches comes second for most people as they already have a smartphone in their pocket that tells time more accurately.
>>61405472
Tide complications are not common and typically are fairly expensive.
>>61405761
take the back of carefully and post pic of movement
if it looks genuine then you can take it to a watch repair shop that can give you a more formal verdict and if they say it is legitimate then repairing it would be worthwhile obviously.
>>61405759
>tritium
oh, i completely missed that. i'll look around and see if i can try it on first then. i want to hear about the watch itself, you have anything to say about it?
>>61405441
OK, caseback is totally wrong too. I'm sorry anon, this is a fake.
>>61405846
Marathon is also an excellent company that has outstanding qc. Their medium automatic sar and hand wound gpm steel field watch are both excellent pieces. They are a bit steep but meet milspec and the diver meets iso standards. Military specification are no joke and they are steals at their price point.
>>61405684
HNGGG
>>61404208
What about nottingham
>>61405846
I don't own the marathon; I own the carnival. The tritium lume is absolutely amazing. Never needs to charge, doesn't fade overnight. I was very tempted by a marathon automatic, but put off by the second hand not having any tritium. Tritium is perfect for movie theaters, etc.
Unfortunately, not a lot of options for tritium. There's Carnival, which I recommend; there's marathon, which is also good. There's Ball, which is very expensive compared to other options, and doesn't really make sense to me - I expect tritium on a more utilitarian style watch, not Ball's dressier styles (plus their tritium numerals are an abomination). Every other tritium option is a huge diver.
>>61405896

>>61406122
No, the Nautilus is the best.
>>61404798
It is still pretty nice looking, but its not the focus of the watch. That was my point

>>61406269
Yes, the SNK80x is the correct intro mechanical watch.
>>61406245

It's obvious after the Royal Oak success Patek wanted their own version. Genta didn't even bother to made it look barely any different.
>>61406269

>>61406188

>>61406727
Its large cheap ugly and has the shittiest mechanical movement money can buy. the chapter ring doesnt line up on half the ones they ship and everyone says they love them as much as their rolex's so its pretty easy to hate on them. Especially since there are tons of better alternatives.
>>61406405
>>61403426
etc
My personal opinion is that its pretty cool being iso certified and what not but at 200 dollars.. but it really needs to come with seikos upgraded hacking hand-winding movement. They need better qc and the giant face with huge indices doesn't really look all that great.
>>61400992
You get a Patek not for aesthetics, but to have executives that you don't even know try and suck your dick.
>>61406333

But that's wrong.
>>61406727

>>61405688
The only thing that I know about Marathon watches is that once the battery is dead, you just toss the whole thing. Makes sense from a Military perspective where you commonly waste a bomb that costs as much as a house, but for a civi consumer it's pants on head retarded.
>>61406426
It's got too much shit going on with it.
>>61406727

I'm sure you guys always get one like me in these threads but I'm not trying to be a cheeky cunt or anything.
Apart from expensive materials like gold, diamonds or whatever, what justifies a 1'000+€ watch?
I could sort of kind of understand a SmartWatch going for 300€+, but what makes a regular, common watch worth that?
Talking out of huge fucking ignorance here, trying to be enlightened a bit.

I stand corrected, indeed 34mm. It is classified as a ladies watch though. I'd assume 36mm is a minimum now.

Sometimes it is the finishing/machining, the movement's level of craft and accuracy.
Mostly though it is muh status/heritage
>>61408547
Me and the Mrs. just bought a house too.
Downpayment was 40k, but I still have about 20k in the bank.

>>61409623
In the end the only thing that justifies a 1k+ watch (or 10k, or 100k) is someone's willingness to pay that much for one.
In the 1k plus range, the price is mostly related to the robustness of the watch movement (the very tiny, very precisely machined and adjusted fiddly bits inside that make the watch go), which is difficult to achieve. In the 4-5k+ range, the quality of finishing starts becoming a main determining factor. Are the surfaces brushed? Polished? How is the case put together? Do the angles of the hands catch the light? etc. In the 10k+ range, precious metals start coming into play. In the 40k-60k range, complications become the main driving factor of price.
There is certainly a great deal of skilled labor, r&d, and machining that go into these prices, and there's certainly also a great deal of marketing and prestige pricing as well.
>>61409695
Not a dress watch though.
Nomos Orion is more dressy if you want Bauhaus.
>>61409623
You have to buy into the whole idea of wearing something hand made that could have taken years of work to manufacture. The level of skill and precision involved in making 400 micro-engineered moving parts be accurate to +/- 2 seconds a day appeals to many.
>>61409623
The internal movement, which is a assembled manually on a higher level of quality control than lower "quality" watches. The mechanical components that are of a higher grade in material and finish. The finish of the the casing.
Having said that, around 1000 euros, you'd most likely get a (modified) ETA inside your watch and a decent above-standard case/watch finish. So it will more likely be brand recognition.
Unless you love watches, or want some bragging rights "in the right circles". 1000+ euros on watches does not really justify their worth, honestly. But the same could be said of jewelry or haute couture clothing.
>>61409711
Dressy enough you ultra autist. But I do agree the Nomos is nicer
>>61409730
Well jewellery and high end watches at least keep a lot of their intrinsic value unlike clothing, electronics etc.
>>61409623
The only reason a watch can even cost as little as it does is because of mass production. When you start making movements that are not fully mass produced and made up of individually machined and hand assembled parts the price goes up exponentially. I almost can't even believe you can buy some watches for as little as you can.It really goes to show how well run these companies are. Go to a machine shop and try to build yourself a wrist watch. It would literally cost you millions of dollars in equipment and materials to build one watch. It would cost you almost no more money to build 10. But now you have a facility equipment depreciation loan interest skilled labor insurance etc... you have staff hand assembling and finishing these precision parts you had machined you need engineers to design the movements to begin with..The cost never stops. Small manufactures (individuals) that make their own simple watches trade equipment costs and complexity for time and attention charging upwards of 200k for each piece.
What do u think of my watches?
>>61409784
Let's be honest though, with the precision of high precision machinery in the watchmaking world, 20k-200k or more for a watch is rarely justified. Unless we are talking about a complex complication or rare materials implemented in the watch.

probably because 4R is what Seiko foisted on its customers when they worked out that the 6R was too nice for affordable watches
most people look at seiko's under-$1k lineup and go "hmm I could have a beater SKX or I could spend the same amount for a 4R that I'd spend on a watch with sapphire and a 6R except not a dive watch". at that point they go "do I really want a diver with shit internals when I can get a pretty good non-diver for the same price?
if you want 6R in a diver you've got the sumo which is fugly and only has hardlex, or you're spending over $1k and it's still fugly. if you want a good looking Seiko diver with a good movement and sapphire and good design, you're looking at a SBGA029
Seiko is good at doing the Apple thing where they reserve the combination you really want for the super high end, and jack up the price like mad, for no real reason
I mean there should be really no reason they can't put out a great looking 200M diver with sapphire, a 6R15C, and a good looking case in the 44mm range, and a solid link bracelet, for say $750-800, and it would sell like hotcakes, except they're assholes
so anything between SKX and a spring drive is a tough sell, because they want you to constantly rationalize your way up the product lines until they're milking you for everything they can
>>61411317
Not always but I'd always recommend viewing such watches in person if spending that much money.

>>61399735
Why the hell not? Is water some new phenomena that came into existence in the last 50 years?
>>61413066
because watches corrode, seals degrade, crystals dent, etc. over time. I'm sure they were perfectly water resistant when they were new. Do you trust a fifty-year-old fire extinguisher to work if it hasn't been checked since it was made?
>>61413066
I think he means that weather sealing outside of specialized deep sea diving watches has come a long way in 50 years.
>>61413066
The Seamaster was always a water resistant watch, the point of the original models was they were dress watches but with water resistance so you could wear them on your yacht. The diving watches also called Seamasters didn't come out until later.
The problem is that back then they just used a little o-ring to seal the back but no screw-down crowns and the watches were just generally not so tightly sealed. They were usually just labeled "waterproof" or "water resistant" but with no depth rating like what's used today. And over time those seals decay and the watches usually end up getting moisture inside them. These days 100m or 200m ISO diving certified impregnable brick shithouses are a diamond dozen, but remember that back in 1953 the first Submariner was only 100m rated and that was a big fucking deal at the time.
Of course a vintage watch could still be water resistant today, but you have to make sure it's been serviced recently and pressure tested. Even then, most people would rather just not risk it especially because there's only so many of these watches left in the world and if you flood yours it's gone forever.

Personally, I don't care for the alligator straps on the 24 hour you showed; I swapped out the stock strap for a no-grain black leather with pin buckle - I think a black strap goes better with the black piano-finish dial and sunburst subdials. The spacer ring around the movement? What the fuck else would it be made out of for holding the movement securely while absorbing shocks? And the date wheels turns 1/31 of a rotation every 24 hours, I think a nice self-lubricating plastic wheel would do just fine for that.
It's obviously a cheaply made movement, but it's well designed to meet the design criteria for being the cheapest half-decent mechanical movement around.
>>61415288
I ended up liking the brown croc strap with my black Bruno Sohnle, so I guess it varies. Shame about the NOMOS-tier lugs though.
>>61415354
>What the fuck else would it be made out of for holding the movement securely while absorbing shocks?
it's not supposed to absorb shocks but should last, thus steel like in any decent mechanical watch.
>And the date wheels turns 1/31 of a rotation every 24 hours, I think a nice self-lubricating plastic wheel would do just fine for that.
day-date is often misaligned, which could be easily worn down plastic wheels. otoh could be just seikos non-existing qc control, see hour-hand which is also often misaligned
>It's obviously a cheaply made movement, but it's well designed to meet the design criteria for being the cheapest half-decent mechanical movement around.
7s26b was a total design failure and could get stuck.
7s26 accuracy/consistency is all over the board (-20 to +40 seconds per day with non-reliable isochronism) and given that it's also non-hacking you basically have to live with a watch that's always very wrong.
and that's for the first 3 years or so when it's still lubricated and minimal wear.
after that it's getting even worse when you don't service it, which you won't given that the watch cost as much as a service.
if you want a cheap & disposable movement you should go quartz and don't try to cost-cut some mechanical movement.
>>61415689
>it's not supposed to absorb shocks but should last, thus steel like in any decent mechanical watch.

>>61415804
>The plastic will outlive the watch anyway.
depends how you define living.
mechanical watches seldomly fail outright but will just slowly degrade and run way slower/faster.
if that time comes a watchmaker can usually just clean and lubricate the movement again.
but plastic parts will likely need outright replacing, so you would need at least a seiko watchmaker as seiko doesn't sell parts to independent ones.
tho questionable that seiko has single parts for 7s26 and even if, seiko only keeps parts for 10 years.
so getting some new plastic calendar wheel for 7s26a (ceased production around 2006) will not be possible as 7s26b/c uses different ones afaik.
anyway, given the cost of a service, you should prolly just toss your seiko 5 in the trash when it starts to misbehave after ~3 years and hope seiko still makes a comparable model.
but that hope will prolly be misplaced, see SNKL23.
