Is the Q6600 still a capable CPU for web browsing and other normie stuff?

>>

>>61383701
yes it absolutely is
the q6600 is the eternal cpu it might never be good again
but it's always adequate
>>
with linux or an ssd it got really capable
>>
Q6600 is okay but there are cheaper chink xeons like e5440 (they work only with modified bios)
>>
>>61383697
yep
there are many better for that price though
>>
>>61383738
>Always that one fucking cunt that says "its okay" then goes on to suggest some autistic niche as fuck arse hole choice.

Fuck you guy. The Q6600 is too good for the likes of you anyway.
>>
>>61383697

>CPU with "Quad" in its name
>dual core

fucking intel false marketing
>>
>>61384199

>>
>>61383697
Just get a xenon for lga775 on AliExpress
>>
>>61384240
>xenon
Go back to normiebook and take your fucking SNSV craptop with you.
>>
>>61383697
Yes if you have it already. But don't buy one unless it's cheap and you already have a nice big cooler.

>>61384160
You can have a processor that fits the same socket, but is faster, cheaper, and cooler (down to *half* the TDP if you want). Yes, there's some BIOS trickery involved, but anyone capable of putting a PC together can do it.

niche? not the same guy but

the 775 socket for P43/P45 chipsets could be modded to accept 771 xeons

you're talking about power on the cheaps back then that was the equivalent to a QX9650 or so

i'd hardly say that it is an "arse hole" choice friend, simply a smarter move considering you can now get those same cpus for the same price of an old Q6600

>~$10 or less

thx :+)
>>
Yes. Ive been using some E series dual core with 2b of RAM for youtube and random news sites for the past 2 years.
>>
No, CPUs lose power at roughly 240 MHz a year which means it's near dead unless you OC a bit.
>>
>>61384268
>the 775 socket for P43/P45 chipsets could be modded to accept 771 xeons

Don't do that, mainboards are more scarce and expensive than CPUs. Just get a pre-modded xeon from ali that fits into 775 directly.

>>
>>61383697
No. It stinks to motherfucking arse. Buy i3-3220.

>>
You can get 1155 motherboard for ~$20 or less
First gen i3 for ~$20

That will be much better than the old 775 socket CPUs.

There's also upgrade path to i7 if need be later on.
>>
>>61384258
Your mother is ugly
>>
I've been maining this baby for over 10 years and it still handles everything like greased otters. Also no radio back door.
>>
>>61383697
last gen of Intel that doesn't have the botnet. so yes.
>>
The Q6600 is pretty good but it's not legendary status like the 2500K.
>>
>>61383697
>>61383714
Fucking no. If you are doing browsing a laptop cpu is more portable, faster and consumes less power and thus will be cheaper in the long run. Especially if you have double power consumption with an Air-conditioner during the summer.

>>61384844

Certainly, my desktop still has a laptop Core2 Duo. Only thing I've tried that it can't do is play Blu-ray remuxes
>>
>>61383697
as long as you dont intent on doning anything cpu intensive yes.
it should even halde light gaymen
>>
>>61384678
uh where
>>
>>61385567
Use ebay?
>>
>>61383697
My laptop has a Q9000 (4c@2GHz) and is still going strong.
>>
>>61384678

no
>>
I have a q9400 and I started feeling its age a couple years ago and upgraded. So no, unless your computing needs are that of a grandma.
>>
Wait for Ryzen :)
>>
>>61383697
Yes and it's quite overclock able.
>>
Even Pentium 4 is capable of normie stuff
>>
>>61383697
It's okay, but you'd be better off with a G4560.

Do to the significantly higher IPC, faster memory, higher clocks, hyperthreading, using much less power, and having modern chipset/platform features, the Pentium is just plain better despite having half the cores

All these people saying it's all you really need are retarded. You can't build a Q6600 system from used parts for cheaper than a G4560 one unless you luck out with some dumpster dives.
>>
>>61386357
I'm still using mine for web browsing and netflix.

>>
>>61383697
Yes, i got mine in mom's machine with a old p45 motherboard and 8GB 1333 DDR3 ram, that thing is running at 3.6GHz since its buy (2008), just 1.32v, also, hd4850 + windows 7 and 1tb wd black.

You guys probably get your electricity paid by mommy
>>
>>61387414
Better than an old quad core with 3x the heat per performance, 40% lower IPC, and lower clocks.

New dual cores with hyperthreading are just plain better than quad cores before Sandy Bridge.

>>61388315
>>
>>61383697
>Q6600
literally glued together
>>
>>61383697

With 8Gb RAM and a modern video card it's fine.

I put a bargain bin GT720 2Gb GDDR5 in my dad's Q6600 and it works great for shitposting, youtube etc. at 1920x1080.
>>
I have an i5 2.6GHz HP Spectre and it's benchmarking score from the CPU in both single and multithread is lower than the old 2.4GHz Q6600.

Sure the Q6600 consumes more per IPC but it's also faster, kinda like an old V8, sure it needs 6 liter and drinks 2 liters per 10KM, but it's still stronger and have more torque than the 4cyl that have way more HP/L and HP/gallon

t. Q9300 M1, Q6600 B3, i5 3317U, i5 4690K, i7 2700K user.
>>
>>61388536
i basically am using this right now except its a q8200 and gt730. good for shitposting as well as a few other things
>>
>>61383697
Still got a Q6600 had it for 14 years does "normie" stuff fine
>>
>>61389308
Putting a SSD in an old PC (Q6600 for example) really brings new life into those computers.
>>
>>61383697
Yes. It is fairly good for web browsing and even gaming. I personally use it in my librebooted desktop rig.
>>
>>61383697
My old q6600 was a beast ran that thing over clicked to 3.2ghz for years until I upgraded to gen 4 i5. And it still run great in my media center pc. Tho it only does high quality 1080, if I upgrade to 4k tv I may need to revisit the build.
>>
>>61383697
yes. Toss an SSD into the system and you have a perfectly good normie computer.
>>
>>61383697
I liked my Phenom II 965 more than the Q6800
didn't use the latter more than few months though.
>>
>>61389816
The Phenom II 965 is about 35% faster than the Q6800. So duh.

Those Q6## CPUs were really pretty garbage if you didn't get lucky with your overclock. And even if you did, they were still spaceheaters.
Intel CPUs didn't get good until Sandy Bridge. Westmere was so-so.
>>
>>61383697
i have an E5450 @3.6 which is basically the same cpu at an higher frequency. its capable but its not good: the cpu is too old and has no optimiziation to run web code and modern browsers abuse that.

will it work fine? yes
will an atom cpu work better even if its way less powerful? also yes
>>
>>61383697
Fuck yeah it is, I'm posting from a goddamn Pentium M right now for fuck's sake and I don't want to kill myself at all.
Maybe if you browse a lot of sites that abuse the shit out of Javascript you might have slightly slower loading times, but nothing really worth giving a shit about unless you're a hyperactive child who loses their shit over a few seconds at most.
>>61386789
>wasting time playing grown-up legos with Core 2 hardware when you can just go buy a high-quality OEM workstation with one for $50 or way less
I only paid $5 for my HP xw4600 and it worked fucking great. The only reason I'm not using it is because I scored a dual-quad Precision T7400 for the same price a few weeks later.
>>
>>61383697
probably but the power consumption is pretty high for the performance you get by today's standards.
>>
>>61390943
The xw4600 CPU isn't even half as fast as a G4560, you retard.
