Just posting to remind everyone that there are only two acceptable Thinkpads to buy new today:

X62
T70

with X210 and possibly X302 arriving in the coming months.

All recent Lenovo units are trash, no exceptions.
>>
I've heard you can put m14x screen in t420 but there are 30 pin and 40 pin models (as i understand). Which one is compatible?
>>
Dumpster dived a T61, trying to boot it but it's stuck in a boot loop, how do I fix it? Flash the bios? It doesn't even post nor allow me to enter BIOS, I guess that's why the owner threw it out.

>>61375758
To make the touchscreen pen work, I needed to deactivate Wayland and go back to X. That could be the issue because unity has its own window server, depending on how much time ago you installed Ubuntu.

different anon here. I bought an x200 recently, pic related. If I install Lubuntu on it, do you think the pen will work? It would be really cool if it did but if not, well no loss I suppose. I plan on using i3wm on it too.
>>
>>61383849
Try xubuntu lts
>>
>>61384013
Why Xubuntu?
>>
>>61384063
It's been the most stable linux distor for me, specially for older machnes.
>>
The T420 that I just bought's resolution is 1600x900 with the Intel HD 3000 driver installed. The corner of the lid shows evidence that it was opened, so I assume a new screen was put in. Does this just mean that the previous owner put a better screen in it? Is there a way to tell if it has an Nvidia card in in it or not?
>>
>>61383849
Sure, it's a modern Linux distribution with X. Not sure if lxde has support though. I'm from the thread before and I just went for Fedora
>>
>>61384111
what kind of evidence? chips on the bezel corners are very common and not an indicator that it was opened up
>>
>>61384194
Oh I see. I know ubuntu has wacom drivers, which the pen is. I don't have the laptop yet so I can't test it. I might have to move around to different distros to find which one works. I'm mostly worried about the orientation flip and whether or not that will be recognized.

I considered going the Fedora route. I like the design suite that they have since I'm into a few art stuff. But now I find myself writing more. Mostly use Emacs to write my journal and moving towards terminal applications. I'm not sure if I can fully transition to Fedora from Ubuntu. I'll just have to relearn some commands if I do switch. Shouldn't be too hard.
>>
>>61384210

The corner where the two halves would come apart is more apart as if it were opened and couldn't be put together tightly.. Is that just a common thing?
>>
>>61384256
The orientation flip worked out of the box on my yoga (thinkpad yoga, not consumer yoga)

All you have to learn on Fedora when moving from Ubuntu is to type dnf instead of apt-get and download rpm instead of deb. Both are pre configured and stable "newbie"-friendly distributions
>>
>>61383758
it's really not difficult. people on 51nb will help ship it to you. buying crap from taobao is much worse.
>>
>>61383849
I have x201t with xubuntu 17.04 installed, the pen works just fine, it's also pressure sensitive.

Is it? I always thought that light bleeding appears on the extremities of a bad or low-quality display. This looks as if a lamp or some shit decided to become visible right in the middle of the screen.
Anyway, I've heard that gently rubbing the area could help, I just don't want to make the matter worse.
>>
>>61385395
That's what you get for buying chinknovo
>>
>>61384866
They should just sell it in Ali, or eBay.

I'm sure they'd sell a lot more.
>>
Hey guys

I've got a T420 and I've noticed that sometimes the colour gets super washed out at times when watching things. It usually happens when it goes from a dark scene to something light. Is this fixable or should I just get used to it?
>>
So I got a X200 on ebay, including ultra base and everything else for a working computer (hdd, ram, etc) for $90! I've been in touch with the people at libreboot on their IRC, so I'm gonna get myself a freedom lappy!

I already have a X201 with miltiple mods, though… Still contemplating if I'll be navigating the hardware from that to this. I probably will, to make it my new main machine.

Oh, I also convinced my girlfriend to get a Thinkpad X220 Tablet for $135 on an ebay auction! She got really lucky at that price, the images weren't stock so I'm excited to see the condition of it beyond the pictures taken, because it looked great!

What can I expect from the T450s? Need it for work and studying.
Comes with the FHD IPS display, 256GB SSD, 12GB RAM and i7-5600U. Will have to inquire about the battery since the seller only says "5h of battery life". Besides some slight wear the condition looks fine too.

What about X60 Gluglug, the ThinkPad that cares about your freedom?

http://www.linux-magazine.com/Online/Features/Gluglug-The-Free-Software-ThinkPad
>>
Anyone know how I can flash the regular old Lenovo BIOS back onto my x60 Tablet? I've got all the hardware to do it, I just need to find a ROM. But Lenovo only offers an executable file for Windows and a Bootable CD image.

The BIOS software on my laptop's chip is completely missing due to trying to flash Libreboot while I had a BIOS supervisor password set and thus couldn't complete the flashing. I then removed the BIOS battery for a few minutes to try to reset it to the original BIOS but it seemed to wipe the chip clean.

I suppose I could try to flash Libreboot again now that the chip is wiped but the BIOS supervisor password also sneakily encrypted my hard drive I was using and I'm able to access it unless I boot from it with that specific Lenovo BIOS (prompts me for password when I put it in my x220 but doesn't recognize the correct password).

Anyone got any advice for me? I've got a years worth of research material on that drive which is irreplaceable.
>>
>>61388663
it seems fun to just spout memery without actually thinking about what one says, isn't it?
Gluglug relinks to MOF since quite some time and they don't have x60 in stock since a long time.
Regarding your linked article:
>coreboot
wew, if that is what you call freedom
also, I doubt they use coreboot if they link to MOF, which is run by the maintainer of libreboot

>>
>>61389015
I don't have any actual numbers, but I'd be willing to guess, depending on your hardware of course, that cloning a barebones OS probably takes around the same amount of time as installing one. Maybe not for Windows because it's full of bloat for the average user, but installing something like Ubuntu on decent hardware probably takes less than 10 minutes. And Ubuntu is extremely bloated too.
>>
>>61389100
Well its because of the OEM license bullshit and that recovery partition, if reinstall i wouldnt be able to activate it.
>>
>>61389147
if it's the correct version of windows and the sticker on the bottom is still intact you shouldn't have problems activating it

That's funny because I'm actually posting on a Fujitsu laptop with an i3 and 2GB RAM.

While I agree with both of you on the fact that SSDs are more reliable, I keep on thinking that a 500GB HDD is enough for me. Plus, I have never kissed an SSD yet so I wouldn't see much of a difference.

No, 4gb is too little even for browsers, the HDD is too slow and will probably break easily, and the E series thinkpads have a shit build quality.

It varies from location to location....I live in a third world shithole, and a new ssd(120gb) costs 50-60$ here. A replacement screen cost 80-100$, here. Burgers have it cheap, so assuming you are a burger, you might be get lucky. Just check out the online listings on ebay, Craigslist or whatever for the average price these goods cost. You might also want to visit your local electronics markets(kinda like akihabara in japan or shenzhen in China).....you might get em cheaper there.

is getting a thinkpad really a good idea? I only have a gamer pc and i need a laptop from time to time for college

a guy is selling a Lenovo ThinkPad W510 Mobile Workstation i7 with a 120gb ssd and 9gb ram. Should I get it?
>>
>>61414514

I've tried water and vinegar, and that didn't work. Is iso alcohol safe to use?
>>
>>61415579
They are good. if you already have a gaymeur PC, I'd reccomend a thin and light (ultrabook right?) or a 12 inch since either have qualities of being portable. That said, I don't think 5.5 pounds is heavy at all, pussies. 10 pound gaymurtops are heavy though.

Gaymur laptops are pointless, neither portable nor powerful. Only good laptops are Mobile Workstations, Ultrabooks, and Toughbooks. Anything else is shit.

Asus does a cool thing where numpad keys are half-width so it offsets less and you stioll get the utality of a numpad, a must for me.

Anyone know a Lenovo rep? Let them know about half-width numpad keys!

How much of an improvement is the Sandy bridge i7 over the i5. I want to know how much more it is worth forking over for one.

In benchmarks, not much, in daily use barely noticeable.
>>
>>61416111
Oh, okay. I looked them up on Intel's website. I was under the assumption that the i7 was a quad core. The 2 processors are pretty similar. It doesn't seem worth paying more for it, at least for me anyway.
>>
>>61416175
It isnt. The only reason i have the i7 is because it was the cheaper option when buying locally. You can swap in a QM series processor, but it will most likely be housefire, especially if you have the DGPU.

So many cheapo T400, T430 and X200 on eBay. I want to bid them all I don't even know why. This is fucking irrational. Is this what becoming a collector feels like? How far am I in the autism /tpg/?

Are t420 batteries physically compatible with t430?(after the bios hack,of course)

How do i unlock a supervisor password on a ThinkPad W530 with a raspberry pi?
I got this W530 and it has a supervisor password, i know i can use a raspberry pi to delete the password in the EEPROM but i dont know here to start.

Yes. And its the EC, not BIOS.

Good luck turning that off in bios

I heard the X220 is getting libreboot support soonish. Is the X220T similar enough to get it at the same time?

In your t420, most likely it is.

any trustworthy sellers who won't charge an arm and a leg for international shipping? I'm looking for a T420/X230/X230t etc

any 2.5" or msata SSD
ram depends on the cpu, google it and you'll find intel's site and it will say what ram is compatible, mostly any ddr3 so-dimm

Anyone up for helping bug fix? Bluetooth is enabled in bios, bluetooth.service is enabled, but bluetoothctl insists there are no controllers. T420.
>>
>>61420511
are you sure you have a bluetooth module?
>>

try to pull out the battery, and the charger. Then press the power button. And then if you put all back in place it should work

bluetooth port is enabled. It doesn't mean bluetooth device is present in your system
try installing gentoo

uni student looking for something decent to get me by, pls and thank you

Budget: preferably sub $500, but I can go a bit over
Location: North America, I guess? Not sure what this field is for, but I'll mostly be using this around uni, carrying it in a backpack
Size: at least 13" 1080p, I need a decent sized screen for drawfagging on my tablet
Performance: looking for 8 GB, processor that can handle moderate DAW work, little interest in gaming
Other requirements: a keyboard like classic thinkpads that feels good to type on, not totally backbreaking to carry in a backpack during long walks

OS? temps? what hardware monitor?
>>

Windows 10, Activity manager, normal temps because it unthrottles itself and runs normally when I'm running it off the battery, and I'm not using a new charger or anything like that. This is weird as hell.
