The best thing you could do is to use some type of linux distro and have your drive encrypted. Most people and "tech support" are used to windows machines and would be lost on a linux machine. Also USBs are a best friend, get a 1TB USB 3.0 drive or a 128GB USB 3.0 flash drive, they're pretty cheap now days.
