Building a computer soon, and doing some moderate gaming. I'll probably get the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050. Anyone know how the drivers are, if installing them takes work or if they come with vanilla Ubuntu, etc.?

why not a 570?

I don't know anything about graphics cards, my friend recommended that one. Is a 570 cheaper?

Nvidia drivers are shit for Linux last I heard, but were good last year for maxwell, who knows what the future holds?
nothing is cheap right now bc ether miners, ether mining will slow down soon though
what are you using it for? why not use the pc building thread?

I searched for NVIDIA drivers, seems there were some for download or through apt.
I'm just using it for a new computer, with some vidya.
I thought I'd try to ask specifically about NVIDIA drivers before trying the general

Sorry to hijack the thread instead of using Google but do you know if the 600 series is decent on GNU/Linux nowadays? I remember trying it back at launch and having a few issues, hoping the time it's had to mature has ironed out said issues.

For 1080p 60hz the 1060 8gb is a good card and prices were not insane last time I looked. The 1060 won't get you 60fps at all times though, there will be dips. The 1070 guarantees smooth 60+ minimum frames but costs ~$430. A 1050 is more for watching movies and TV.

idk if they support Kepler at all on any platform
AMD drivers are good right now but like I said, miners have driven up prices to 300% msrp for the rx 400/500 cards

Nvidia generally has amazing drivers on Linux which will perform just as well as windows drivers.
The open source (default) drivers are shit though. So expect terrible performance initially. Just install proprietary drivers as fast as possible.

I'd be playing stuff like TF2, EU4, Bioshock, Rust, PUBG. Is a 1050 good enough for those? I'm not looking for perfection, anything will be better compared to my current intel integrated laptop.

No problem, I'm not enough of a freetard to have a problem with closed-source drivers.
