What does /g/ think of void linux?
is the only good reason to use it no systemd
It's an independent distribution. I'm running it right now. It's fairly easy to install and gives a lot of packages. I hope it becomes one of the "main" distributions
libc musl, amazing package management.
FAST AS FUCK.

Is it more stable than arch?
Is it much different in use than any mainstream distro (Ubuntu, openSUSE, etc.?

Yeah, harder to get more stable than Arch

Best reason to use it is xbps.
Pros: no systemd, runit, fully independent, allows quite a bit of customisation - I've heard it called "gentoo for people who don't have time to install gentoo", rolling release yet very stable
Cons: NO. FUCKING. DOCUMENTATION. ANYWHERE. It's my first distro on bare metal (i.e. not counting the occasional VM) and I would not recommend doing this unless you're willing to spend the time learning the _why_ of things, instead of following an easy guide.
Still, installation is pretty easy, and if (unlike me) you pick one of the live images that come with a DE you'll probably be fine for daily usage - there's nothing inherently user-unfriendly about it.
And it has quite a decent amount of packages, I haven't yet enountered anything that I really needed to compile myself except really niche stuff. I don't think something like debian would be much different, except for corner cases.
>>61375663
I hear a lot of good things about xbps, but having used apt before (in work-related virtual machines) and using xbps now I really don't see a huge difference. Sure, not having to mess with dpkg for stuff like listing installed packages is nice, but I haven't noticed any fundamental differences (unlike, say, runit, which I absolutely love for its simplicity after having heard nightmare stories about both systemd and sysvinit). Could you elaborate on why everyone absolutely loves xbps so much?
>>61374985
did you mean "arch linux" ?
>>61375798
It's very easy to write your own templates for packages you miss from the repos. Noone forces you to contribute (you can just keep them for yourself) but if you want to, it's rather easy and the quality/style requirements are clearly stated on their website.
Plus, besides downloading binary packages xbps-src lets you compile from source in case the preconfigured binary is missing some option that you absolutely need.
so ye, gentoo for busy people is on point
Void linux: By Mexicans, For Mexicans.
>>61375798
I like xbps because it's not Pacman.
>>61376447
That's not how you spell Arch

>Void Linux: By Arch, For Arch
???
Since we're talking void, what's the best way to install clang for YouCompleteMe? Just download the source from llvm.org and compile? YCM's install guide makes it sound like it's very very bad if you don't use one of the precompiled ones, but there are no precompiled void binaries.
>>61376425
>Noone forces you to contribute (you can just keep them for yourself)
this + the lack of documentation or adequate guides will be the death of the distro but i think most of its userbase would prefer it being niche and left to actual power users
>>61376869
It already has a shitton of packages so it's not going to die from lack of them. Lack of documentation could do it but on the other hand if it got to where it is now with what it has, worst case scenario it's going to continue being what it is (a "main"-type but relatively obscure distro), which isn't necessarily bad.
I used to use void. I liked it, but then I forgot the password to the laptop with void because I didn't use it for a year and a half. Then I just installed Debian on it because that's the install disc I had laying around.
Will probably give void another go.
>>61376932
Do it. Debian has been bloated by the normies.
It's really nice. I have been using it on my laptop lately. All free software out of the box as well.
>>61375295
This. Funny how people make so many memes about Arch without having used it.
I've used Void for a while and haven't encountered instability yet.
>>61376837
YCMs guide is full of shit. Clang from void repos works fine. Just make sure to pass that use system libclang flag to YCMs install.py
>>61376869
There is very little difference between submitting a package that's going to be used by 3-4 people or keeping it for yourself. I just wanted to underline easy templates are a pro.
Besides, if you decide to contribute it's pretty much a matter of fork - add - pull request.

I weep
Why the fuck aren't they using gcc
why people compare arch with void?

>>61375027
Does the musl version have a larger amount of packages than Alpine?
I plan to install the glibc version to compare to Gentoo, but if the musl version can hold its own, I might replace my Alpine install with it instead.
>>61374985
It's pretty good. Package manager is ok, repos could be bigger, can compile packages from source, lacks documentation (not too much of a problem since there's arch wiki for pretty much anything) and lacks people backing it. Templates are similiar to PKGBUILDs, most of the times you can just copy line per line.
>>61375295
Arch is not unstable. They are unable to properly manage repos and will fuck up some dependency from time to time, but if you don't mix stuff up it won't break. Neither is Void, almost one year and never had a problem.

http://www.etalabs.net/compare_libcs.html
glibc does not completely stick to the C specification. musl does, and is much smaller. A major problem with it right now, though, is that quite a few packages rely on the poor implementation of glibc and gcc. As such, not everything that compiles under glibc will compile musl.
If you couldn't already tell I am absolute shit at explaining things. I would recommend the site I linked for a decent in-depth comparison. Could be biased though, I think the musl devs put it together.
I've been using it since February. Super fast and stable

Their installer is trash and their CLI install documentation isn't great. I just went to Gentoo instead.
I installed it with XFCE as DE and all icons were missing, since I'm a shit noob and those missing icons was bothering me I went with Devuan XFCE
I loved Void's package manager, though. once I'm more experienced with GNU/Linux I'll switch to Void + a good WM

You were literally one xbps-install away from your icons. Next time usexbps-query -Rs iconto find see how many icon themes are available.
