Asking again because no answer, someone said not to use Fedora, Mint, Ubuntu, or OpenSUSE on my T430. Wanting to know if there's any reason why I shouldn't. I was ready to install either Fedora or Mint. Am I good to continue with one of those?
>>
>>61363027
Don't waste time and go straight to Debian.
>>
>>61363027
You'll probably be best off by Ubuntu LTS or Debian. You get the benefit of largest communities compared to other distributions, easier to solve problems
>>
>>61363027
Mint got a lot of hate recently for some security mishaps, and just being a typical downstream distro.
People do real work while running fedora so I assume it is still a decent distro.

basically systemd; the distro
wouldn't use it personally, but its better than mint or ubuntu crap
>>
>>61363074
Thank you for a straightforward answer. I'll probably go Debian, because I'm not a huge fan of the look of Ubuntu
>>
>>61363074
>You get the benefit of largest communities
How does that benefit the users of distro x more than users of distro y? Its not like that stuff that works on distro x wouldn't work on distro y.
>>
>>61363089
Just don't get swayed by the premise of debian testing or unstable.
It honestly to God not worth it, stability of debian stable is something you start appreciating after a while and few major fuckups and you can take my word on that. If not, you'll learn on your own mistakes.
Most software packages that benefit from "running the newest versions" actually have a separate repository called "backports" so you can easily download and use newer version of the package you need in case you genuinely need it. And if they don't exist, you'll sooner or later be interested how to build your own packages. It's definitely not as easy as writing a SPEC file for rpm (redhat really got it figured I give them that) bud debuild is not that scary either.

Besides, Debian 9.0 was just released so you won't be terribly behind everyone else.
T430 has a few years, you definitely won't benefit from running a newer version of the kernel (as an example)
>>
>>61363082
>People do real work while running fedora so I assume it is still a decent distro.
You mean like "having a REAL job and getting shit done"? If so, you're just another sheep falling for blunt shilling.
>>
>>61363089
I'd personally go Lubuntu or Xubuntu but not a bad choice
>>
>>61363115
>Its not like that stuff that works on distro x wouldn't work on distro y.
That's absolutely wrong. Distributions use different versions of software packages and compile them with different options (debian is actually notorious for that, they love to disable shit your average user kind of expects to have like smb support for mpv)

Large community means a lot of developers, a lot of package maintainers, and someone responsible to take care of the security.
It also means if you ask on a forum you're more likely to get an answer to your problem. Ever used a forum of some niche distribution? Not a pleasant experience.

Should be able to wireless. Even during the install.
Debian Stable is gonna scream at you first for using proprietary/non-free firmware. Pay attention to what it's telling you during the install (i.e. write the name of your firmware down), then run to another computer with an Internet connection, search and download the proper .deb for your specific firmware (should be a quick search engine query away), throw that sucker on a USB flashdrive and have at it. Debian's installer, if I'm not mistaken, should prompt you to insert media containing the .deb and then the installer itself will execute dpkg to install the vile, non-free firmware.
Worked for me during my fresh install of Stretch, at least.
Or simply use an ethernet connection during your installation, then boot into a fresh Debian session and install the firmware post-install. All up to you.

There's about an 80% chance you'll turn it into some weird sort of Frankendebian within the next year cause you do need up to date software. Eventually you'll have spent days "apt-pinning" and learning the differences between apt, apt-get, the two aptitude frontends, apt-cache, dpkg and synaptic, and it will still refuse to install a needed dependency that's RIGHT THERE IN THE FUCKING REPOS because it conflicts with some other shit you don't even know why it's there in the first place. And hopefully, before you switch back to Windows, you realize that this isn't a Linux problem, it's just that Debian is a steaming pile of shit that should have stayed in the 90's where it belongs.

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.
Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called "Linux", and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.
There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called "Linux" distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.
>>
So I just installed GCC-7.1 on my machine and I can call it in the terminal by typing gcc-7. How can I change it so it gets called by simply typing gcc? I don't have older versions installed in my system.

It just creates a symlink to the executable. When you 'execute' the symlink by calling gcc, it actually executes the linked file (gcc-7).

>>61367751
No distro is inherently better for learning how to use the operating system, GNU/Linux, some just force you to use the command line and give you slightly different tools to accomplish what you want while others give you the option of using GUI tools.
I'd say use Xubuntu, it's lightweight but noob-friendly. Try to move to the CLI as much as possible and refrain from using GUI for system configuration.
Or maybe even install Ubuntu server, that way you force yourself to use the CLI.

>>
>>61369151

KDE Neon does word splitting, it doesn't matter if it has more characters. Both have the same amount, including the whitespace. You can choose if you want KDE or NEON.
openSUSE doesn't do word splitting and you always have to get both.
>>
>>61369151
Well, Kubuntu is less characters than KDE Neon. The space counts as a character. I'm conflicted now. When I think about it, BeOS was great. And that was 4 characters.
>>

y-yes why? i have enough ram so the pc is probably not even using it and even if it is surely stallman wouldn't be stupid enough to program linux to store the decryption key on the hdd
>>

So what's the distro with less characters?
>>
>>61369182
If your computer swaps, and the decryption key is swapped for some reason, unplugging the computer can have the key still being accessible on the swap partition.

Depending on your country, the police is instructed to not turn on the computer in such events, but to freeze it. Or if it's turned on, to bridge it with a portable PSU to their van.

When the police came to my home, the computer was on, it was 4AM, they told me that they need to take the computer. So I plugged it off, the police asked "Wtf are you doing" and I said "I'm plugging it off so you can take it" and the officer was like "oh yes sure, thanks"

Only in Germany, but it was 2005 in a small Bavarian village. They're probably smarter now.

I was just reading about bracketed paste mode being a thing in bash/readline now but it doesn't seem to be on by default in debian. So if you are annoyed by accidentally posting multi-line selections into the shell and it attempting to execute the lines as they are pasted you can turn this on to let you review the multi-line command before executing it. Add
bind 'set enable-bracketed-paste on'

in your ~/.bashrc or the bit in the quotes in your ~/.inputrc

1 minute 17 seconds.
The time, measured with a stopwatch from clicking on the colourful "Chrome" icon to actually being able to use a browser in windows 7.
On an tiny i3-based (2C/4T at somewhere around ~3Ghz) pc with integrated GPU and 4G of memory I cobbled together at the place I used to work at (basically throwaway) and gave to my sister when her laptop shat the bed.

How
the fuck
do normalfags
do this

My 10 year clunky piece of shit with a fucking ANCIENT dual core cpu and 2G of memory (which I'm sentimental about) gets from a cold boot "iridium" to a functioning browser within 5 seconds.
>>
>>61370556
>what sound drivers audiophile linux uses
Well you have the choice between OSS and alsa. Since in the install instructions they say to set MPD to use
device “hw:0,0”
it looks like they are using alsa, direct to the hardware with any transcoding being done by mpd. No pulse or jack, at least when using their recomended playback method.
They do mention some realtime linux patches for improved latency but I doubt that would change quality unless you had an old single core cpu under high load. They might mess around with buffer and period sizes in mpd idunno.

What else could be causing it to fail? I didn't tinker with my firewall or anything. Unless my router is blocking it, but then I don't think it would be giving this kind of error
>>
>>61373644
Do you have ntpdate?

I'm trying to run this install.sh file to install the driver needed for my USB wireless adaptor but it's not working and says that it's a read only file system. I've tried to change the permissions with chmod but it just says 'read only file system'.

What can I do? I need to run this because it deals with the tarball, which is beyond my level yet.

I do, and running it without -u says ntp socket in use.
>>
>>61373746
Remove ntpdate, or kill it and retry.
>>
>>61373733
I used sudo sh install.sh , but get this.

>>61373783
C:~\Documents\cpp_stuff> killall -9 ntpdate
ntpdate: no process found
C:~\Documents\cpp_stuff> sudo xbps-remove ntpdate
Package `ntpdate' is not currently installed.

(I think it came in the ntp package)

Are you on an NT OS?

No it's just my prompt, I spent an autistic amount of time ricing my shit before getting the time to work properly.

Fuck. Why is GPU passthrough so complicated to set up without uefi? I will have to give up my linux dream like this since i need to use windows heavily ;_;

This is the piece of shit itself, rlt8821AU is the realtek driver. Googling around and it seems like there's no end of problems with this stuff.

Why is -9 bad?
>>
>>61374173
They're on a CD and the link provided as an alternative doesn't work. This is apparently a patched version of the driver https://github.com/Grawp/rtl8812au_rtl8821au

I'm reading about it now but it seems working with it requires me to use all sorts of commands which I don't understand, and I don't want to do that for fear of fucking something up that I can't fix.

Why is gcc so bloated? It takes hours to compile.

Here's the most crucial bit.
Follow pic related than sudo make clean install

If a process cannot process the sigkill signal it's starved of memory and becomes unstable.

No process can process the sigkill. They are killed by the kernel.
>>
>>61374299
I will when gcc stops being a fat fuck
>>
>>61374247
So let me just get this straight in my dumb head for a moment. Type all that into my terminal and then 'sudo make clean install' ?

I've been tackling this thing for the last 8 hours and I'm a linux newfag anyway so I'm pretty mindfucked right now.
>>
>>61374431
If you don't want to irreversibly fuck your shit up omit the "install" and just do "make".

Based on rec in the last thread, I'm giving Gnome a try. Installed ubuntu gnome, yadda yadda yadda. Looking through the packages I see that gnome (Full GNOME Desktop Environment, with extra components) is not installed. What gives? Is base Gnome installed, but the extra components aren't, therefore it doesn't show as installed?
>>
Anyone else thought about going back to an older Ubuntu version because they werked and werked fine and are still mostly secure? I'm not sure but I think I will try 12.04 or maybe 14.04.

It's not even about systemd before you start that shit, it's just that they got the job done and stayed out of the way. Low resource hit too.
>>
>>61374177
-9 actually kills a process, which is bad, since it doesn't have the time to free its memory, save shit, etc theres no need to use -9 anyway when the program will terminate fine without
>>
>>61374752
12.04 reached end of life

Only recently though. It should be good for a while. No one cares about hacking some anon anyway.

I am having an issue with Nvidia and GNOME
about once a second i get a little freeze on my display.

I also haven't found a way to disable panning that will stay on after a reboot. Currently I go into teh driver control panel, set underscan to 30, hit apply, hit advanced, add +30+16 to the bottom setting, hit apply and exit the control panel. This stops the panning until my next reboot. I've saved the config to /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-nvidia.conf, but that doesn't actually help

card is 1060 6GB, outputting to a TV over HDMI.

using arch(antergos) because I am lazy, but it does the same on my gentoo installation.

I should have bought an AMD card, never had any of this bullshit with my 7870 on open source drivers

webm related. it shows the stuttering here.

Not sure if it shows up in the webm, since it might capture it properly, but stutter on my display.

I can't watch any videos, play games anything. even browsing a webpage is painful, since scrolling is stutery.
