first for
>ywn have a modenr x series laptop with a butterfly keyboard
>>
so I'm going to move into a very small apartment soon and I can't take my full pc tower with me, will a Thinkpad keep me safe until I can move to somewhere larger? I game occasionally and do use some large programs every now and then..
>>
>>61359863
Not unless you get a relatively new one.
>>
>>61359863
maybe a W530?
its thick and heavy but is very capable
depending on how large your programs are you could get a away with a T430 though
>>
Where do you get your batteries /g/?
>>
>>61359863
I have my x220 for some time now . I did put 8GB and SSD into it and it works great. Now depends what games like play but even some 2d more detailed ones can lag as fuck. I had moments in mother Russia bleeds that would hit major slowdown. War of mine well that was just unplayable. Got myself Baldurs gate 2 on steam summer sale and it was smooth sailing all the way
>>
>>61359914
>>61359925
>>61360542

The W530 is damn unlikely, i've been looking at the x220 but it looks like i'll either have to up my budget or pull back some expectations. Thanks for the help anons
>>
>>61358962

I've got one of those still somewhere, 486 with Debian installed I used to use in 99.
>>
>>61360572
anon you havent exactly told us what programs youd be using
maybe x230 would be enough but I cant say really
>>
>>61360576
Honestly I just wish they use that keyboard on some stupidly high end x series laptop

though the more I think about it 16:9 is wide enough to house a full size keyboard

its just a really neat piece of engineering
>>
>>61360572
Btw I have the i5 processor in it but there are also i3 models around. For everyday shit posting ,TV shows is brilliant. Running Linux mint on it beacaue GF also uses it and something that is not 'windowsy' would be way confusing for her
>>
>>61360619
Photoshop and TVPaint for certain, if I can squeeze more out from there I wouldn't say no to Premiere Pro and Illustrator. Beyond that is just standard programs and browser content.
>>61360650
That sounds pretty good man, but I am worried i'll need more than a casual station if i'm away from my main tower for too long, so hoping to run some more intense programs as above.
>>
>>61360649

The keyboard is nice and the screen size was good for what I used it for: only console mode programming and ssh. I can see it getting rekt by cheeto crumbs and pubes though.
>>
>>61360694
pretty sure you could get away with a X230
I have a T430 with a 3320M which is what youd get in a X230
I could try some test scenarios if you want?
>>61360701
fuuuck I can just imagine the crunch
>>
I bought a T420 a few months ago. When I tried taking it apart to replace thermal paste, the screw on the heatsink clamp was superglued in, with no possible way of extracting it. I figured it was still okay to run, and then a few days later the CPU/GPU/something ended up making a strong plastic burning smell and it turned into a paperweight.

Couldn't return it since I didn't even look at it for a few months; outside of warranty. The seller had very good reviews and rating on Ebay.

With this experience I'm very hesitant to buy another used laptop, but I really want another T420. Was I just ridiculously unlucky or is this something that happens commonly?
>>
>>61360694
Sounds like it would be better to go in the small PC case path. They can be a size of tiny fridge or smaller but still have a kick to them. Otherwise for vide editing you looking at some high level laptop
>>
>>61360740
if you could find a way to try that out I would really appreciate knowing, thanks!
>>61360803
I was looking at this a little, I could attempt to move my current build into a smaller tower but I will take a look at a new build and see how the prices fair really. I am not really solid on the exact components so it might help me narrow that down too
>>
>>61360778
>heatsink clamp was superglued
call the seller a shit head then buy a new heatsink and mobo
no thats pretty unlikely to happen

as for how much it'd take to repair it
>mobo is like 20-25 usd roughly
>cpu is another 20-25 (i5 2520m for default cpu, look at thinkwiki for other cpu options lenovo shipped with)
>heatsink fan is 5-6

optionally you could go for a quad core upgrade too though but youd need a dgpu heatsink with two heatpipes and of course a quad core cpu
personally not a huge fan but its an option
>>
>>61360893
alright so Im downloading premier pro photoshop and illustrator (cs 6 for all of them)

for photoshop Ill do this
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=17GjboxqNuI
or this
https://macperformanceguide.com/OptimizingPhotoshopCS6-Benchmarks.html

for premiere pro I think Ill just take something like a minute long 1080p 60 vid and try stitch it into a 5 minute loop try to export it

I dont know what to do for illustrator or tvpaint
you got anything in mind?
>>
>>61360951
I actually used the Best Buy trade-in thing yesterday and got $110 for it, believe it or not.

>put laptop back together without even bothering to put in most of screws
>take out SSD with Win10
>take out 6GB RAM
>tell the employee that it has an i7 processor and Win10 installed
>tell him the reason it isn't booting is because it can't even turn on without memory
>mfw they bought it

Bought it for $180 so I guess I got my money back, need a new external HD anyway.

I had no idea that the parts were that cheap, though. I probably would have repaired it myself if I'd known, was just too frustrated by the whole ordeal, what kind of fucking prick glues in screws. Thanks for the tips, will try ordering a new one in the next few days.
>>
>>61361093
honestly dude if you can do those first two and get results that will give me confidence about the other two programs since they are certainly more intensive. Thanks for doing this anon, its really going to help me out
>>
>>61361188

>takes 2.5 seconds to zoom in and 5 seconds to zoom out on chrome
>cpu climbed up to from 17% to 50% (steam discord deluge and 25~ chrome tabs in background)
this is going to be good
>photoshop install took around 13 minutes from a mechanical drive though the cpu stayed sub 2 ghz most of the time so I probably got bottlenecked by the hdd
>loaded up the test image which is 30mb btw
>took around 3 seconds
>zoomed in and out for a few times
>nothing
>zoomed in and scrolled
>kind of hung up once but nothing after that
>used a stamp tool to kind of remove objects rather quickly and shittily with a 130 pixel brush
>no lag
>switched up to a 5000 pixel brush
>the brush lagged up to a second depending on my speed
though I am using a 240 mp image as a test

Ill try premiere pro now

How is the current Thinkpad e570?
I'm going to get it with the 940mx since I don't game that much and the 950 + i7 is an exta 350.

I've had the e550 and it's served me fairly well. Albeit a bit slow since i3 and igpu.

Is there any reason not to get the newer model?

Has anyone recently replaced the battery in their W series thinkpad? I'm looking at replacing the 55++ battery in my W510, I could get a 70++ battery for around 170 maplebucks but there's a new (in opened box) 28++ 9 cell slice going on ebay for nearly half that price.

I'm only getting around an hour on my current battery with only very light usage (just some rdp,ssh and maybe spotify running). I'm thinking about biting the bullet on the 70++ battery and if it's not delivery way better battery times I'll then look for another cheap slice. But I don't want to miss out on this cheap slice I can see on ebay now..

Also I'm worried that because this is a how power hungry W510, a new battery alone may not make a huge difference
>>
>>61363776
>>61363809
or micro sata?
not sure but it should be one of them so yeah
youre right its not zif
the one on the 2510p is though like here >>61363610 (not my pic btw)

better to go from ebay or amazon where you can return it worst case

>non-system disk or disk error replace and stirke any key when ready
this is after pressing escape on the boot up screen/bios, and selecting usb
>>
>>61363982
I'm hoping so. Last time I ordered one it took about a week. Went from China to Germany then UK then here. But I've also seen people say it was hit or miss, sometimes a month or more.

I could go with Dell too but desu, I've heard pretty bad horror stories about them.
>>
>>61363999
yeah Ive got nothing
assuming you went through:
>booting with the hdd hoping the boot order takes over
>using the multiboot menu
>changing the boot order
>removing the hard drive and hoping the boot order takes over

it could be just a simple bios thing where the system needs a hard drive to do anything
even though that would be really odd
>>
>>61364055
I've reset the bios and did a hard reset from hp's website for trouble shooting, set usb as the priority
I'm not going to buy a new hdd for this laptop if I can't solve this issue, which is why I came here
>>
>>61364159

Literally who are you talking about? No one here really cares about performance. That's why we all talk about thinkpads below xx40 series. xx30 are permissible because of the igpu, and similiar build to xx20 with an option of classical keyboard.
People here buy TP because of its durability, build quality, best keyboard and trackpoint relatively lower price than similiar specced laptops
>>
I finally took the bait and bought a T420. It arrived today slightly dirty (need to clean keys) but otherwise nice. Lighter than I expected too. Will soon be replacing Windows 7 with linux, but thought I should ask some questions first:
1)Intel Boot Agent GE (when booting to windows) displays message 'Media Test Failure. Check Cable' briefly before booting windows normally. Is this something to be concerned about?
2)When booting Antergos from USB with the option 'Start Antergos Live' message 'kvm: disabled by bios' quickly flashes up, then Antergos starts fine. Does it need or should it be enabled?

its this thing where lenovo blocked the use of third party, mainly chink batteries
wifi whitelist is where lenovo blocks installing other network card that arent approved by lenovo

it doesnt change much
neither can do 4k nor do they need it but both of them can do 4k. the better gpu is mainly for games and such

yes some people cant carry a full blown workstation class thinkpad nor can they afford it so the best option for better graphics is usually T430

T430 or X230 but youd struggle a bit to play mid 2015 games

Most have zero, but the X1 battery I bought that was new, had already lost 33% of its charge thanks to being made in 2012 I believe.

it just depends on when the batter was made, and what cells they have.
Panasonic made the best batteries for thinkpads, because they last forever, only their ToughBook batteries last longer.

Just got an x250 with an i7-5600U. It has a 768p screen, thought I still didn't check if it's IPS or not, but I just turn it on to check some stuff and just went to work again.

THIS.
As much as I love the thinkpad especially the xx20.

Sadly the hardware is getting outdated.
For example the ports, now that TB3/USB-C is becoming more mainstream USB will probably be dropped soon and everything would use USB-C, some chink company would make an Expresscard with USB-C port though.
Performance wise while there are no applications that uses 16GB RAM, yet you can easily run out of RAM if you ran several VMs.

As for the CPU the Second Gen i5/i7 is decent to do most tasks, as long as you stay away from CPU intensive tasks like encoding or browsing poorly optimized websites eg. Facebook.
Newer CPU doesn't really add to the performance much anyway.
And hardware acceleration for H264 is supported, and it will be at least 5-8 years until H265/VP9 becomes mainstream.

iGPU is the main cause of thinkpad obsoleteness, many applications that require strong GPU would struggle on the older thinkpad not to mention gaming.

IMO xx20 would become obsolete in 3-5 years.

I suppose it might take marginally less battery to power a raspi encoding h264 than doing it on the main proc? The only real benefit would be getting to screw around with it I think.

just get a raspi and plug it in to your laptop

>Don't buy anything OTHER THAN HP Elitebook (2570p, 8770W, 2170p)

The Elitebook 840 is getting pretty affordable now. Build quality is still as solid as my old 2570p. Only problem is the shitty TN panel that HP insists on using, and the 840's lid is made of a black soft touch material that is an absolute fingerprint magnet. Touch it with clean dry hands and it will look like you massaged a stick of butter right before handling the laptop.

Well they are used to open links in new tabs, or closing your internet browser tabs. The use varies between programs but if you press it and move the Think nipple then you can scroll in any direction.

they are ugly marks to begin with so what difference does it make

the stickers preserved the plastic underneath them, the sooner you remove them then the sooner the plastic will get worn to the same shade as the surrounding plastic

Did you install tp middle? If you install it then you can do both clicking and smooth scrolling (not that shitty arrow icon that reacts to your mouse position).

In the taskbar you will also find the ultranav settings.

in the mouse settings "middle button action; use as middle-click", if you're on windows 10 you have to do a registry edit

So I got a T440p for the autist of my brother.
Holy cow, the keyboard is a mixed feeling. In a way, is better than the original one, it doesnt flex and the keys that work produces a nice, albeit mushy, tactile feeling. But also lots of keys are scratchy as fuck, even getting stuck sometimes.
I should change the keyboard right?
Also, the clickpad is not nearly as bad as you, autists, make it sound, but I still prefer the old style trackpad. Probably I'll end changing it too.
And the screen sucks. Not nearly as bad as the screen of a T420 but is sucky. So, I need to put a 1080p IPS panel too.

I had an issue on my T430s with windows 10, it downloaded a shit load of data and went to 55GB on the 64GB SSD...

How do you tell the difference on whether a t6*/t6*p uses a 14.1 in screen or a 15 in screen in ebay photos? I'm planning on making the t70 and replacing the screen of the one I get with the QXGA one which is only 15in.

I don't want to end up with the wrong size because some ebay seller doesn't know.

>>
>>61382165
Yeah get it then!
it is outdated yes, but if you are going to use it to web browse and shitpost, it is more than enough.

the speakers aren't that loud but are much better than the Tinny t420.

I should of said the W500 is the best TP if you want something with a 16:10 ratio and 15", the last one made.

Although the sideways USB ports are kinda funky... dunno why Lenovo went with that.
Anyways get it. :P
Just know you can't core 2 quad it.
ATI GPu should be enough for league of legends
>>
>>61381998
Damn... i didn't save a photo of the comparison I did a while back.
14.1" widescreens have the speakers locates on the left and right sides of the keyboard
15.4" widescreens have the speakers located above the keyboard (right below the display).

If you are looking for 4:3 14" and 15" T60/p (Or the hella rare European R61 4:3 model), you will not see any holes for the speaker as they are located in the bottom of the laptop. Additionally, the 15" 4:3 is easily identifiyable with its wide keyboard bezel, the sides of the bezel are about as wide as a regular key, the 14" bezel is a little bit bigger than the power or volume keys.

Best of luck getting a QXGA display for a decent price.
>>
>>61380998
Solved the issue of the keyboard. I just have to pull the plate cover the screws towards myself. The keyboard actually feels very nice and firm.
The clickpad and the screen still sucks.
Are these T440p msata compatible?
>>
>>61382295
Looking for the 4:3 not the 16:10. If I can secure the parts I'll pull the trigger but I'm in no hurry. I'm one of those people who really doesn't like widescreen and I'll try to stick with 4:3 until 3:2 (or something similar) starts to become more popular.

Thanks for the help on the bezels/speakers. I will definitely look for that and I can tell the difference now.

>>61382538
best of luck searching! I found a 14" 4:3 t61 w/ nVidia so I'll find out if it has a good board on monday...
Paid $50 for it.

I hope more computers use the 3:2 ratio display.
My Chromebook pixel has been throttling very terribly thanks to the heat.
If I can find an extender for the LCD ribbon cable, I am thinking of cutting up the junk 600E I have for it.
It won't be correct, I'll have to use the T4x era Usb keyboard, but the trackpoint works on it. I'd remove the bottom cover on the pixel and slap a fat fucking heatsink on it too.
