There's no set definition of TDP, so everyone has their own version of it.

Not to say Intel's TDP has nothing to do with reality, it really doesn't and this goes back to 15W ULV mobile chips drawing 30W+
>>
>>61353942
Intel just accidentally second Presshot.
>>
>>61353963
Stock turbo boost, you can OC it of course.
You can do the same for threadripper, but for those extra 400MHz over the stock turbo you're looking at well over 30-40% more power used, for something close to 10% more perf

I have a R7 1700 at 3.6GHz
Paired with a RX 570 4GB

Runs like a breeze, use it for 3D modeling, animation and rendering. The only problems I've had are with windows 10.
>>
>>61359141
Windows 7 still supports all your hardware correct?
>>
>>61358989
That's not how it works.
>>
>>61359234
Yes it is you retard.
>>
>>61359234
that's actually exactly how it works in regard to the CPU scheduler on windows, only old poorly coded applications all pile up on CPU0. its why all the benchmarks showing an i3/i5 doing well in games are so unrealistic, who the fuck closes programs on modern systems unless they are poorfags. more cores means more responsiveness.

besides, these CPU's aren't targetting the shit-tier consumer gaming/facebook crowd, they are meant for professional work with compiling, rendering, and VM flavor workflows that DO use as many threads as you can throw on it. if you can save yourself a few hours/days on a render, it pays for itself very quickly.

What? 12 is 20% more than 10, and AMD's 12c/24t chip scores 11% more than Intel's 10c/20t chip. It also uses less power and is quite a lot cheaper. If you're using applications that scale to 10 cores, they're going to scale to 12 too.

AMD wins this round by miles, even without considering Intel's chips are stupidly hot whilst AMD's will be nice and cool due to large, soldered heat-spreaders.
>>
Wanted lanes, don't care too much for superfluous cores. Anyone else think the 12-core is overpriced? I wanted a <$650 HEDT CPU with non-gimped PCI lanes. Disappointed! : (
>>
>>61359489
if I recall, threadripper also has 8/10 core parts in the works that all include the same amount of lanes/memory slots in the config due to the way the CCX's are configured (think two r3 CCX's). Infinity Fabric is some magical stuff and this architecture will allow AMD to scale as high as they want. Intel is in legit full panic mode because it costs them a fortune to manufacture a single 24c die, and with defects they are just throwing money away, meanwhile AMD only has to manufacture a single 8c die.
>>
>>61359602
10 core part is impossible, 8 core part will directly compete with R7s.
>>
>>61359162
Ryzen does not (officially) support Windows 7
>>
>>61359611
>8 core part will directly compete with R7's
>while offering double the PCIE lanes
>and double the memory channels
no, thats not how it works.
also, a 10C part with two R7 CCX cores disabled is actually very possible.
>>

>>61353574
Is anyone getting depressed from how advanced these new processors are? Unless everything moves to the cloud, we'll eventually see this become standard for home computers. This means mainstream software is going to go much further downhill. Fuck, if Intel's claim about their new i9 being able to hit 1 TFlop, that means any dual processor I9 or Threadripper build would be just as powerful as one of the lower end top 500 supercomputers from 2006.
>>
>>61359629
CCX need to be symmetrical to retain cache and latency coherence.
>>
>>61359611
There may or may not be an 8c/16t part but a 10c/20t part is certainly not impossible. They made a 4c/8t part by disabling two cores per CCX ffs, anything can happen!

I'd be amazed if we didn't see 3c/3t or 3c/6t Raven Ridge APUs next year.
>>
>>61359611
>>61359629
Unlike 1700X vs 1800X, "1900X" 8-core is actually distinguishable and desirable. I'm the anon who complained about 1920X price. If there is in fact a "1900X" 8-core on TR4, I WILL buy it. (I will NOT buy 1700/X/1800X, they are not desirable and not enough of an improvement over my current rig)
>>
>>61359649
I haven't read anything of the sort, regardless though they will have an 8c part, since even Epyc has an 8c variant (Epyc 7251) and thats Four CCX with 2c each so theres no technical limitation holding them back.
>>
>>61359664
CCX needs to be symmetrical to maintain cache and latency coherence.
>>
>>61359644
mainstream software won't go downhill because you need to make it actually use the additional cores
>>
>>61359614
bud it does work doesn't it?
Im asking because i plan on building a rig but i dont want windows 10
>>
>>61359679
7251 is 8 CCX with 1 core and 4Mb of L3$ each.
>>
>>61359694
Epyc is 4 CCX total (2 memory channels per CCX)
>>
>>61359684
No you don't, every individual program will just become so shitty that it uses an entire core. I will say that I'm interested in seeing how the CPU usage would be displayed on a dual processor Epyc machine when that comes out, given they'd need 128 different graphs.
>>
>>61359712
EPYC is 4 Zeppelin dies you fucking retard.
Each Zeppelin has 2 CCX, 4 GMI links, 32 PCI-E lanes, some onboard I/O and 2 DDR4 channels.
>>
>>61359725
I guess I'm fucking up the CCX term with dies, either way there are going to be 8c TR parts 100% since there are already Epyc parts with it.
>>
>>61359756
There are 8c EPYC parts for a reason. These are for I/O or L3$ bound workloads.
8 core TR directly competes with 1800x.
>>
>>61359715
there is only so much you can do on a single core performance wise

Looks like glueing together desktop CPU parts works out pretty fine
>>
>>61359782
again dude, not everyone wants to be limited to dual channel DDR4 / 32 pci-e lanes, they will 100% sell it, same as the 8c/16c Epyc, there is a market for it.
>>
>>61359807
How the fuck do you even price it?
>>
>>61359814
the same way intel price their i5's and market them as i7's on x299 you fucking mongoloid. the bill of materials is the exact same as that of the 12c and 16c parts, with just some more cores disabled, if anything they are saving money by using them instead of just throwing them away.

Ryzen7 1800x has already had like two price drops and it isnt 500$ retail anymore, you can find them for around 390-420$ US, so the 8c TR can fit into the 450-500$ pricepoint and shift the 1800X's a bit further down because everyone knows the 1700/1800/X variants are identical and are only the first batch of silicon.

>modern processors are getting massively powerful
>I'm still using a Phenom 9550 quad core that came out in 2008
>only things my computer has problems with are some AAA games from under 2 years ago (of which I've only tried 3 because there was a free weekend on Steam) and ridiculously bloated web pages (which I almost never have to deal with because I don't allow every script)
>still can't motivate myself to upgrade
It is kind of depressing.

Of course it still works, they specifically cater to the lowest common denominator, so their possible market is as big as possible.
