Just making sure you see the information.

>>61351231

You have no idea what a distribution is.
You don't know anything about the distributions you mentioned.
Encryption isn't distribution exclusive.
Instead of asking sane questions or informing yourself, you're jumping straight into the memes. Enjoy your 10 minute experience and then going back to Windows.

tl;dr: you're an idiot who fell for memes and myths spread on here.
>>
I am stupid and I keep replying in the old thread.

>>61351348

You are an idiot. Reasons why:

>antergos is arch for pretentious idiots, who enjoy additional useless abstraction layers which contribute more bugs
>you will use the same kde plasma package on both, meaning you will have to wait the same amount of time (on the same internet connection)

Ubuntu server is fit for cases where you need the latest server software and backends.

CentOS and such are for cases where you need the server stable, up and running no matter what. As an example, Dolby uses CentOS for the base of their OS running on their digital cinema servers.

To remove such bloatware applications such as things the shitty games it comes with, Do I simply delete it from the /usr/share/applications folder?

How can he remove an organisation?
What's wrong with Kwin and why would i3 or Openbox be better for him? Why did you only mention a window manager and not other useful programs?

>>61351978

No, you don't. You uninstall it with your package manager.
>>
>>61351978
>/usr/share/applications

that's literally your "start menu folder". Deleting it only deletes the icons. You have to do what this man said:
>>61351994

remove the programs themselves using your package maanger.
>>
>>61351994
>What's wrong with Kwin

not him but a year or two ago I had severe issues with kwin failing to detect monitor resolution/placement properly leading to a whole bunch of other related issues, had to disable kwin in kde and then set up a manual xorg config to resolve the issues

multi-monitor stuff on kde just does not work well in the slightest
>>
>>61352061

>disable kwin
I don't think you know what Kwin is. You can't disable a window manager. You can replace it with a different one. I also doubt that a window manager has anything to do with your monitor/X stuff. That is an X problem and you most likely would have it with any window manager.

Nah, most laptops have problems and so do a lot of desktops.

>Linux has the potential to be the most powerful gaming platform, because it is free
Yeah, like it has the potential to be the best networking platform, because it is free AND is used on so many servers. But it isnt. The way Linux gets high performance networking is by bypassing the linux networking stack and handling it in a simplified, custom driver.

>muh freedom
Yeah it's great. But you can't pitch linux as a jack of all trades and the best at everything.

Looking to install Ubuntu onto my system, have a Samsung NVMe drive with a 200GB or so unallocated chunk for it, is there anything I need to add or modify to the latest Ubuntu image before I try and install? To get Win7 working (Ryzen CPU) I had to add a heap of drivers into the install disc.
>>
>>61352551
>s this normal since I've not yet seen it in any other distro?
It's a "just another day with systemd" problem. search for "a start job is running for dev-disk", I encountered it a few times with debian and ubuntu. You should find plenty of people complaining, especially because it's long and cannot be cancelled.

It's a fixed amount for everyone. Guess memed is waiting for something? Nonexistent device in fstab or similar.
>>

Depends on your hardware but chances are you don't. Make sure you connect the computer to the internet, that lets you download / update stuff early on but it's not necessary.

Why would you ask here for such a common problem and not on the Arch forums? You don't even have to ask there, there are already threads about similar symptoms. Took me 30 seconds to get first pointers.
It's obviously waiting for a device that's either not there or specified wrongly.

Legit question from a Linux newbie:
I have a Gnome installed as my DE

Is it possible to somehow implement a large list of hotkeys to open all kinds of different programs?
>>
>>61352937
Wouldn't know about Gnome but KDE comes with a shortcut manager to set shortcuts for different applications , Also if you right click on the open application you can open up the options menu.
>>
>>61352937
if you want to do this, why not just use a tiling window manager? e.g. i3

>>

What does the fact that he wants to start certain programs with a keyboard shortcut to do with a window manager's mode of operation?
Nothing, that's what. You're just another idiot who thinks that i3 is for l33t people who use keyboards, disregarding its core premise, which is the ability to use a tiling layout (together with also a floating and tabbed).

Use your package manager and figure out how to tie a file back to the package it came from (with rpm, it would just be `rpm -qf $filename`). Then remove that package.

Be careful, since if that package is tied to other dependencies you will likely remove a lot with the bloat, say if it came from a package group/meta-package and you tried to install the entire thing.

In the future, look for minimal meta packages or package groupings, and always look carefully at everything that is about to be installed to see if you made the right decision.

Arch breaks things sometimes, but not as often as meme'd. You're faced with breakage like 5-10 times a yeat and when it happens, you know it before when reading the news.
That said, if you're skilled enough you can use the AUR on any distro; just check the PGKBUILD and adjust to your distro-needs.
The downside for me is that pacman doesn't seem to have an option to exclude all nonfre software. It could need some license filtering like on portage - but well, Arch isn't much freedom orientet anyway, so I don't think that it will change in the future.
>>
>>61357600
aur is basically just a git clone; make wrapper
>>61357666
just fyi, its possible to install the your-freedom package from parabola for basic filtering, since the package is made to conflict with all proprietary software (pretty cool hack imho) and disable it when stuff is needed

<nitpicking>
random holds stuff which is generated by actual random shit like hardware temperature and that jazz
if random cant supply entropy, the kernel adds generated random stuff from different sources, mostly from the cpu
post 2008 cpus contain engines with backdoors, which makes them a pretty insecure source for generating useful randomness

Then both of you are wrong, because it's not "reused" in the trivial sense, which suggests cyclic cycling. It reverts to pseudorandom generation in a secure manner. Given that the original entropy pool is unpredictable, it is known to be in practice just as secure as /dev/random. Idiots.
>>61361394
>I also suggest to get familiar with imageboard jargon, fellow redditor.
Nice projection. I guarantee I've been posting on imabeboards longer than you have. Your misuse of such terminology is also detrimental to real and current instances of botnet in the open-source community and GNU/Linux in general (e.g. users willingly adopting and using such services as Steam, Google services, Netflix/other DRM-integrated services, etc), and serves trivialize the dangers of actual botnet. Think about what you're spewing, kid.

I just got an XPS 13. 512 GB NVMe drive.

I'm going to limit windows to taking up 250 gigs.

I want to play around with TWO distros to learn linux. I want one to be more user friendly and intuitive (read: similar to windows) and I want the other one to be more advanced where I can learn the ins and outs, etc...

I was thinking Ubuntu for the first one, but I don't like how it has an amazon botnet preinstalled. What can I get that's similar? I hear mint has good reviews and Linus Torvalus uses it and likes it. Is Mint Ubuntu based?

And I was leaning towards Arch for the other distro. It has a great ricing scene from what I hear and is more technical than other distro's, but not quite gentoo-level compile everything yourself-tier.

Suggestions, thoughts?

Never understood this argument. What's the point here? Free software is cool and all and it's nice that things like busybox exist for small systems. Clang may be problematic, but thats a differnt issue (ask BSDfags how they enjoy being Applecucks). But the actual funny thing here is: Systems with linux, busybox, clang, muslc, etc obviously aren't GNU systems, so why pointing these out? The existence of this software doesn't change that the combination of GNU and Linux is the GNU/Linux system.

Pretty sure the cpu entropy source it's used for /dev/random too and urandom uses a prng the entire time, not just as a fallback for an empty pool.
>>
>>61361905
Linus Torvalus uses gentoo.
>>
>>61361905
You don't need 2 distros to learn Linux - any distro will do, no matter how user friendly. And Ubuntu no longer has botnet. Just install Xubuntu, and if you want to learn the "ins and outs", open up a terminal. Also read the OP for links, which answer your questions.

>>61361905
Ubuntu doesn't do the Amazon thing anymore.
Just do gentoo.

What about starting with Arch and ricing the shit out of it? No memeing.

>And Ubuntu no longer has botnet.
That's not really correct. It comes with nonfree software and the amazon spyware is still installed. The only change canonical made is that it's turned off on install.
>>
>>61361944

But I want one that I can use daily and have it 'just werk xD'

And then the other I want to experiment with, rice it, etc.

Use Debian. It's both in one.
>>
>>61361979
ricing doesn't teach you shit about using GNU/Linux.
Ricing is pretty much just copypasting someone else's config and mixing up colors a bit.

hey /g/, what's the best distro which is uptodate, stable, lightweight and respects y freedoms?

Debian Sid.

everything you know about arch is a meme
https://lists.archlinux.org/pipermail/arch-general/2015-July/039443.html
tl;dr
- it's bloated
- shit breaks
- it's not minimal
- it's not lightweight
- no user freedom
- community memes

>- it's bloated
That post talks about how arch uses the standard kernel, devs don't touch it as much as in other distros

>- shit breaks
this is a lie

>- it's not minimal
again, talking about the kernel, not the OS as a whole

>- it's not lightweight
A standard arch install is more lightweight tgan a standard install from other distros, like debian or ubuntu; but a debian netinstall, for example, is more lightweight than a standard arch installation.

>- no user freedom
Define 'user freedom'

Maybe a bit more instersting how to create these.
cat goatse | curl -X POST -F 'c=@-' https://ptpb.pw/~goatse

the url after ~ is a vanity label, which can be customized.
ptpb is pretty cool since it gives you a delete key so you can delete shit like this:
curl -X DELETE https://ptpb.pw/theuuidYouGetWhenPosting

curl https://ptpb.pw/~hal

not needed since post is the default

How is Devuan? Outdated like Debian?

Actually POST is only default when -F is defined, but yeah, it's not really needed in this case.
>>
>>61352837
sudo rm -rf /dev/cpu

Actually more, it's still on 1.0 which is as of few weeks equivalent to debian oldstable (8.x jessie).

t. devuan user

The release of devuan 2.0 is unknown yet, I've heard they're experimenting with OpenRC instead of running just the sysvinit but who knows.

there are three drifferent versions, both for debian and devuan where the unstable versions are as fresh as any rolling distros

Why not? What's wrong with those distros?
