I've only ever used it as a video editor, but once you get used to "the Blender way" of doing thing it's actually pretty good at those kinds of things. Beats having to buy/pirate stuff or use Windows Movie Maker.

But it renders so slowly.
How do you use it without going mad?
>>
>>61346657
I've been wanting to use blender for this! Where did you learn to video edit with blender? I've used kdenlive and it's kind of meh to me.
>>
>>61348230
same here it looks difficult for a video editor
>>
Blender*
Easy typo to make.
>>
>>61346617
>hating on blender
How is that 3ds subscription service doing, are they at $100/month now or what?
>>
>>61346617
HAH.
GOTEM.

No but really it's fine. I used 3ds max for a little while and then switched to blender and feel I'm better off with it.
>>
Blender is my favorite free software project.
How excited are you for 2.8 and Eevee?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6HjPsGQKvqc
>>
>>61348670
I'm not excited at all yet, because I don't know anything about it and am too tired to watch videos explaining the new features.

Improved viewport (with much better wire representation, pic related)
Eevee - new realtime PBR renderer/viewport
Viewport elements (gizmo, etc) will now show up in Cycles preview
Much better layer workflow
>>
>>61346617
>only foss competitive to commercial releases
>even studios like Epic donate and support because it is free and just works
>HURRRR HAHAHHA LOL
People are waking up,they dont need 3K per license to do their jobs.
>>
OP is too much of a brainlet to get past Blender's learning curve
>>
>>61348795
I noticed people usually drop it the first time they could not find an option and talk shit, even though every option in 3DS has equivalent in blender.
>muh smoothing groups
Blender equivalent is a vertex group you can do whatever the fuck you want with it not just smoothing.
Visit /3/ sometimes they are very funny.
>>
>>61348404
Don't be a retard and use blender as a video retard, use divinci resolve, it's better and free.
I would love to use blender but the interface is offensively bad. That's really the only thing holding it back. With 3D max most things are intuitive and you can do everything with the mouse without much guess work but with blender nothing is obvious, you just have to "know"
>>
>>61348827
The UI is shit, the creators should be ashamed of themselves, stop being a bitch and accept it.
>>
>>61348873
it's okay, bro, I was mad at Blender's UI for the first 6 months too.
>>
>>61348873
LightWave uses the same interface yet we havent heard anyone in the past 20 ears complain about it.
But i get it,its hard to admit that one is retarded.
>>
>>61348904
20 years*
>>
>>61346617
This software was shit, but then autodesk bought and killed everything else so it is the best now.
>>
>>61348214
What are you talking about, mine flies through pretty much anything i throw at it. Have you tried changing the settings for your system?
>>
>>61348893
Wow 6 month, how embarrassing, I bet I could learn, modo, maya or houdini in much less time.

Seriously blender has everything to contend with the big boys but that interface will always hold it back.
>>
>>61348904
Nobody uses lightwave, Newtek is only still in business because of their shitty tricasters
>>
>>61348834
>With 3D max most things are intuitive and you can do everything with the mouse
Which is bad because you never bother to learn the shortcuts that will make you fast and productive.

>you just have to "know"
Or spend a couple of hours learning about it. It's really not that complicated. Print a cheat sheet if you need it.
Also the fucking space menu has everything you need. Just hit space and start searching for what you want to do. Chances are that you'll find it immediately.
>>
>>61348762
>Only foss competitive
Theres also the webserving space, KVM, Compiling software and version control. A whole bunch really, im sure theres more too.
>>
>>61348976
>No things shouldn't be easy because you must use two hands for everything at all times because I say so
>>
>>61348961
>Nobody uses lightwave
I know,it as industry favorite just a few years ago, suddenly UI flavors are changed whoopty doo
>>
>>61348997
>Just hit space and start searching for what you want to do.
>>
>>61349002
No it's always been a low tier 3D program like cinema 4D
>>
>>61349038
"industry professionals" would disagree.
I have heard enough people in my time swearing by it.
>>
>>61349010
How about they make a non shitty UI?

It's not like people haven't been complain about how shitty the UI for over 20 years now, it's not like they promise to make the UI better but never do.

This is the only thing holding blender back, if the foundation put some real effort into it I'm sure they can really scare autodesk. If it wasn't for the shitty UI I would have dropped 3D max for blender a long time ago because the technology underneath is quite amazing but alas autist gonna autist
>>
>>61349062
Being professional doesn't mean you're good at something
>>
>>61349090
>3DS also known as "put every option in its own fucking menu" for maximum busy screen look
competition isn't any better
>>
>>61349119
Still a million times better than blender
>>
>>61349147
so you say
>>
>>61348945
My computer at the time was pretty shit, but everything else ran a lot faster.
I must've just been retarded with the settings ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
>>
>>61349175
>at the time was
How long ago was this?
Using it on two core ULV laptop and works just fine.
>>
>>61349147
I disagree. I love how blender lets me concentrate on what I'm working on without having to open modal windows that break my "flow". Everything is out of the way and that's really nice.
If you want a button for everything though you should know that there's an addon for that.

>>61349090
What's a thing you find shitty about the UI and how would you fix it?
>>
>>61349164
3D max isn't one of the most used 3d programs in the industry by accident, mean all the 3D apps pretty much do the same things, it's not like the only real difference between them is the UI
>>
>>61348446
i still feel like a fucking chump when i bought that shit back in 2001
>>
>>61349196
Should've mentioned
>>
>>61349199
All of it to be honest, I used the "3D max presets" it made it worst. Maybe it's just not my brand of autism but all my peers have the same feeling, we'd like to use blender but the UI. I mean the company pays for the 3Ds max licenses so whatever, I don't care if it's free or not, it just have to be nice to use.

They should copy the UE4 UI system, its close to it and doesn't make you want to pull your hair out.
>>
>>61348446
I'd pay 100 bucks a month to not use blenders interface
>>
>>61349223
Companies have strange ways of working I will say that much, some of it is habit, some of it is monkey see monkey do,some of it is plain blind believe that if it cost money it must be better.
Again there are a lot of things involved so I understand if they dont want to use free software.
>>
>>61349277
im sorry that you are this retarded, truly am.
>>
>>61349299
I'm sorry that you're poor and your software doesn't pay for itself. Work harder, I'm sure one day you'll afford the nice things in life, like a good interface
>>
>>61349313
This is a foss board idiot,go complain in the mac forums.
>>
>>61349261
Sounds very vague. Almost like if you just opened it once and clicked around aimlessly before deciding that it was shit. Not a very convincing argument to be honest.
You could have mentioned how render layers are confusing to use or how creating a new vertex group doesn't automatically assigns your selection unless you also click the "assign" button. Those are real complains by someone who's actually used it.
>>
Is Maya really that big of an upgrade on Blender?
>>
>>61349333
Not an argument
>>
>>61349797
not an argument
>>
>>61349334
I had imported some characters for interacting with water simulations to export into 3D max for rendering a few times but the entire process was just terrible, I can't go into detail now because it was at the beginning of the year and the entire process had me thinking it can't really be this bad.

I mean I got the result I wanted in the end but it felt painful. If it wasn't autodesk and the rest would quickly go out of business, why would you pay thousands of dollars for something that is worse than the alternative? The biggest difference between all the 3D software is interface.
>>
People forget that blender was originally closed source software that failed commercially, It was only when it became open source that people suddenly starting jumping out of the woodwork and claiming it as the second coming of Jesus despite it still being shit.
>>
>>61350338
thats literally not true and this is coming from a 3ds user

I remember using blender years ago and really liking how everything had shortcuts, in particular basic xyz transformations, which made me dislike non-blender programs that made you drag the mouse on arrows. Is it really true that non-blender users put up with this? or was I just ignorant not knowing how to do it outside blender?
>>
>>61346617
Tbh I have free access to 3dsmax and I still use blender.

Its fine for architecture and engineering.

Le ebin computer gaymez might be different though
