Picked up a lot of 3 t400 laptops on ebay. Arrived a couple of days ago. Gonna libreboot one for myself and possibly give one to a friend of mine. Just waiting for some breadboard cables to begin the procedure.

The laptops are in good shape and I also got an ssd and 8GB for my thinkpad. I was a little mislead however...the item descriptions and pics didn't show webcam and they all came with them. I was curious as to how vulnerable a webcam is to hack into. Otherwise I might just try to remove it.

Sounds like it's running from whatever residual charge is in the battery. The charger might be at fault. If not, then it's most likely a problem with the charger jack, or something on the motherboard. The charger jack is a replaceable module on ThinkPads, which plugs into the motherboard.

The easiest thing to do is try another charger.

they cherrypick passmark/geekbench results, while completely ignoring average results.
Passmark should be visited directly, because lots of retarded people submit reports of overheating CPUs which lowers it's score.
>>
Anyone here with a quadcore in a T420? I read that it can be done but not sure if it requires modification or not. I got a i7-2720qm from some scrapped gayman laptop and was wondering if the 90w powerbrick and dock would handle it as a drop-in

>>
>>61340512
I highly doubt that, the cooler in my w520 is fuck huege compared to the one in my t430 and t420
>>
>>61340450

Which is why the Dell Latitude E6420 is a superior device. Core i7-2760QM here in mine, runs without any issues, with the Nvidia Quadro GPU as well and the dual heatpipe HSF setup, I redo the Arctic Silver 5 twice a year, max temps full bore 92C without any problems at all, no throttling ever.

I love ThinkPads, I really do, but they are not better than most of the older Latitudes in many respects.

OK, captain pajeet reporting here....
That deal is expensive desu, try quikr or olx. If you are in Delhi, go to Nehru place™ or wazirpur market™....You'll probably even get one for as low as the Burgers have it for(~200$ +/- 50$)
Personally, I'd advise you to either buy 2570p over x230, (if you are looking for an ultraportable) or t430. I've heard that the build quality on x230 is not upto the mark(cracked palmrest over express card slot, gap between bezel and the screen, pieces of plastic falling apart etc).
Anyway, the x230s generally go for 13k-15.5k rupees for default config(4gb ram, 320gb hdd, i5 3320m). Do look for IPS displays when buying too, you might get lucky as the shop keepers can be morons and not know what they are selling.

>>61340885

I'm a X230 owner too though, also an X220 (motherboard which I intend to build up as a project) owner. I just don't have the keyboard autism. Layout isn't great yes, but the keys feel amazing to actually type on. Chiclets also give a better sense of location, you can feel your way and know where your hands are without even thinking. I had a T61 at one point, the keyboard wasn't anything amazing.
>>
>>61341773
its only going to be a shitposting linux machine anyway. i've got another laptop and desktop for mein gaymen
>>
>>61341819
i'm sorry but in no conceivable universe is chiclet good
>>
>>61341912
Ah, cool.
>>
>>61341929

Wonderful subjective opinion. The very design of the keys makes the actuation and response much more satisfying. Do you have some experience with both and have anything to say about the actual key mechanisms and typing feel?
>>
>>61342031
ok, fair. Chiclet keys are harder to distinguish because they are flat, and they have no feedback because of almost zero travel.
>>
>>61342067
also, its almost impossible not to break the mechanism if you need to take it apart to clean it
>>
I'm thinking of buying x260, is it a good model?
>>
>>61341912
You could've gone for t60 or older models....You dun fucked up!
>>
I'm looking to replace the SP3. Ideally something current gen. I'm in Ireland so it's difficult getting second hand ones that I can inspect in person.

Budget would be about 1,200 - 1,500 dollars.

I really need something that has good cooling, battery life, an SSD + HDD (can install one later on) and can be ugpraded to take 32GB of RAM eventually.

Also, I know it's thinkpad general but I assume the XPS series isn't part of business laptops?

Also is it worth getting longer warranty from Dell/Lenovo? I tend to take reasonably good care of my electronics.
>>
>>61341621
expresscard to hdmi cable. eGPU is connected to the main monitor via HDMI>DVI cable. Power is provided via Dell DA-2 PSU. External fan is powered from unused 6pin 12V power connector with potentiometer in between.
>>
>>61342289
t60 is too large (i wanted a 12" system) and they go for too much money due to thinkpad tax . anything older than a t60 would have been worse than this
>>
>>61342067
>Chiclet keys are harder to distinguish because they are flat, and they have no feedback because of almost zero travel.

You're clearly not talking about the modern Thinkpad "chicklet" keyboard then.

The keys aren't flat and have a big amount of travel for a laptop keyboard.
>>
>>61342500
>thinkpad tax
excuse me, what you mean by "thinkpad tax" ?
>>
>>61342553
a t40 (a much older and slower laptop) was more expensive than the HP because its a thinkpad, so people run up the bids because /g/ has shilled them so much
>>
>>61342553
Nicer things cost more money.
This causes /g/ to sperg out.
>>
>>61342537
all chiclets are the same in comparison to a real keyboard, flat and poor travel. whether a particular model is allegedly slightly better is irrelevant as a real keyboard will always best it
>>
>>61342500
oh, and a t60 is 4:3, so grills would mock me
>>
>>61342659
Yes, bringing an external keyboard will best it.

But why would you even care what keyboard your laptop has when you're not even going to use it?
Point is: modern Thinkpad keyboards aren't worse than older ones.

Did the T420 come with an IPS screen option?
>>
>>61342067

Almost zero travel? Well this is how I know you've not used one. I'm not talking about all chiclets ever made, only ThinkPad ones. They have plenty of travel, the same amount as the xx20 keyboards and before. Not talking about something like an X1 Carbon or something either, only the thicker ones and only the xx30 gen as that's all I have experience with, a T430s and an X230 with the only difference being the T430s' was backlit. I have no idea what the xx40 and onwards feel like.

>>
>>61342878
I'd get one for the keyboard alone. Infact, that's what I did. Good combination of a cheap laptop with decent specs and good keyboard. Only thing it doesn't have is all the other bragging rights related to thinkpads, such as durability and stuff (not that i think anyone is ever putting this to the test intentionally).

Just make sure you configure it with a good screen, 1366x768 is workable but painful.

Yes you can, T60's are limited to SATA I speeds & 3GB RAM, on T61 (R61, X61), you can flash middleton bios (if your battery works) and get SATA II speeds, while having the wifi card whitelist removed.

I haven't used a T60p in a few years, so i am not sure how well its performance will be, but an SSD and 3GB is all you really need unless youre trying to watch 1080p livestreams.

>>61340131
I use passmark as a standard, as its numbers are just easy to deal with, other sites I do like so you can have a variety of speed/tests but it can be overwhelming.

>>61340537
Quad E620's were notorious for overheating in the early days, Dell used a single heatpipe for them lol
You'd have to get a double heatpipe HSF to be safe.

though an E6420 can get an quad i7 a lot cheaper, and new thermal paste plus bios update fixes the overheating issues.

Unfortunately the lot that I purchased all had them and I was under the impression they would not have one...I am happy they arrived fully functional and in good shape though. Are you satisfied with yours?. I really haven't tinkered with mine all too much as of yet. They shipped with Win7 and with only 2GB RAM performance is a little lackluster.

I have T420 with peculiar issue, if I shake it I'll lose all sounds from the speaker and the headphone/mic port, ALSA/pulseaudio still shows the sounds playing, shaking the T420 back can restore the sounds.

There's no IME on the C2D models.

I've finally figured out why you worship the track point.
Sleeping on bed with the think pad supported by your legs is the comfiest position to use it and the track point makes it so easy and strain free, though I had to disable the track pad because the left/right click kept getting pressed accidentally and I can't scroll with it comfortably.

No, the t60 uses the 945GM chipset while the t61 has a GM965. Until someone reverse engineers the 965 and figures out how to initialise it without the aid of proprietary binaries there can be Libreboot support.

That's the reason why it's slow to boot up.
The SSD would speedd it up significantly, linux doesn't need a lot of space so 50 GB should do, the rest can be taken up by windows an its applications.
Try not to save multimedia files on SSD, and try to ditch dual booting.
Or swap the drives when you need a different OS.

Just to add in case you're not clear on their relationship; Libreboot is not a fork of coreboot, it's a distribution that provides a `simple' installation for a 100% free bios. Given that, Libreboot only supports very specific hardware for which free software is available.

Any specific reasons? 850 EVO cost about 100$.

It's essentially a bloated Xen installation that uses templates to run your VMs.

I have 12gb on my t420 and 16gb on my desktop. I've never used more than 8gb while running several VMs at once. Each VM uses a base of 600-1100mb ram. I'd recommend an SSD, though an SSD is probably a good idea for any computer nowadays.

Here's a decent overview. https://youtu.be/NTOsHtyS_5k

So I looked around and found that the Series 3 docks support both T420 and X230.
But which one should I get?
Does using the dock disable the thinkpad ports? Does Linux support the dock?

This is exactly my build minus the screen is the 1400x1050. I used it all throughout college and I still use it (although it mostly stays docked).

It's great. I would recommend to anyone who is comfortable taking a laptop apart that a frankenpad is the way to go.

If the series 3 docks are like the current docks, the only differences are the range of ports and the included power adapter.
>>

I can't use the laptop power adapter?
>>
>>61354698
Provided you have the appropriate hardware, it's very simple. The only supported version of Windows is 7 and GPU pass through is a pain if you're trying to do any gaymen.

Personally, I have a Lenovo m91p desktop that is fully compatible, and basically every ThinkPad is compatible.

If you can install Ubuntu, you can install Qubes. Just follow the gui. The documentation is pretty good too, if you want to do advanced things like Anti-Evil Maid.

If you have 8gb and an SSD, the whole thing will rub smoothly.
>>
>>61354789
yes you can, but if you buy New Old Stock, you'll get a power adapter
>>
>>61354800
>GPU pass through
What about light games or windows only applications like photoshop? I just need Win7 for those, and to test probably maliciously infected USB flash drives.
Dual booting is pain, and don't want to spend money on more drives.

I have T420 and X230 just not enough RAM.
>>
>>61354875
Both the t420 and x230 use integrated graphics, so it's not an issue. That was mostly directed at desktop usage where you'd use a dedicated GPU.

More ram is definitely necessary. The least I'd even attempt it with is 6gb.

I want to buy a thinkpad under 900 USD.
with the next requirements.
- Have a CD/DVD player.
- HDMI Port (If there is).
- i7 or i5 processor over 3th generation.
- if is possible, no much change with the classical mouse click's.

there some model who have the most of this requiriments?.

It's all good. You can get an 8gb kit fairly cheap. Depending on your configuration, it might be more economical to get a single 6gb or 8gb.

We are throwing out all our hardware related to systems that we don't wish to support anymore at work. This includes every board with SO DIM. So I could have 2 x 16 GB DDR4 for 80 $ total. Should I put them into my t460p?
I can't think of any valid excuse to have 32 GB RAM besides being the hero of screen fetch threads but it's just 80$

What reason could I find to buy it, just to feel better about it?

Just deal with 900p displays and 3 hour playback.

Wait... are you asking you want a laptop to play Blu-ray movies for 10 hours?!

whats next, a brand new car that gets 90 mpg thats under $10K and has a top speed of 200 mph? Thats literally what you're asking.

The 1080p W530 lasted maybe 4 hours from web browsing. I bought it for $250 and sold it for $500.
And it will go up from there... but you won't get 10 hour anything unless you shell out $$$$ for a new thinkpad.

Sup, lads?

Need a quick answer. I'm about to nuke a new T420 and need an OS suggestion. Either:

-W7 Pro from whatever product key the refurbish dudes use (if it even works at all)
-W8.1 Pro from eBay bought for less than $10 a while ago (probably MSDN or other volume listeners and it's a question whether it will work at all.)

I'm not using the reseller botnet and I can't go Linux as I need to use some Windows based software. I guess my main question is:

How good is W8.1 pro on T420?

There's the 4337 and the 4338

You can plug in one external monitor into the 4337 and two into the 4338. However you can only have two active monitors at all times.

Both have a "with USB 3.0" variant.
