Does the timer function on that watch allow it to act as a stopwatch as well as a chrono? Been looking for something similar to that as it makes for a lot less math when lap timing.

Something interesting I'd like to show /wt/. This Miyota quartz movement is maybe ten years old, give or take. Since it was always set to English the sun sucked out the color of the English-language Sunday, but not the other one (Spanish or French, whatever it is).

>>61336660
It was the mans childhood watch you soulless nigger.
>>
>>61336750
Naw, I can understand that. If it had no sentimental value, that would be a pretty odd choice, though.
>>
>>61336775
Well if you buy a slavshit from Ebay you still have to service it 99% of the time. Only those will be in way worse conditions, since Ukrainians are fucking niggers, and their Ebay sellers are like the HMT salesmen of Europe.
>>
>>61336750
pretty interesting senpai. That looks to be Italian however.
>>
>>61336885
Italian then. Either way it's probably an EU-market model. It's from a corroded to shit Q&Q.
>>
>>61336744
It has a lap timer functionality, if that's what you mean - basically works like a rattrapante.

Well when I first got the Speedtimer I decided to try and give it a full wind, sit it on my desk, and see how it faired. Came back and it had stopped after two hours. However when I wore it for a full day it stayed running just fine. And held its charge the next day. Giving it a full wind is hard with how short the crown is, but at least it seems to not be a problem with the power reserve. Have not officially checked it's accuracy but I would guess it is about -30 to -45 seconds a day. All in all can't complain too much.

Anyways as for my hunt for interesting textured Seiko dials/cases. Saw a few vintage models on ebay recently but not in good enough condition so waiting it out a bit. Maybe will grab this contemporary Dolce instead.

Buy the fashion watch. 50% of my collection is good looking quartz fashion watches that I love. People still compliment them because they look nice. Most people don't give a fuck what kind of movement is inside.

Horologists shouldn't get pissed at people who buy fashion watches, they should be wondering what the fuck reputable brands are doing so wrong that most people would rather buy a good looking fashion watch than their overpriced, bulky, ugly diver that looks the exact same as every fucking diver swatch ever made.
>>

>>
>>61339049

This... Seiko is a prime example.. OK so Invicta watches don't look great but they have really good steel cases and use the nh35 movement .. thy sell for 60-80 usd... why is seiko not making a simple steel diver with the 4r36 for 100 dollars... OK they certify it fine.. 150 dollars.. ok its made in japan fine 200 dollars.. but they put the fucking 7s26 in some ugly diving watch and sell it for 200... why? Why dont they make a dress watch with the 6r15 in a classy 36mm case with a simply nice dial no date day window and no lume? The cocktail time is so fucking loud. I want to like seiko so much but I don't want a single watch they make. Then we move on to GS. I personally don't want a springdrive watch but their high beat movement is phenomenal. I would love to own it.. but I don't want the watch it comes in especially not for the price it sells for. For some reason the nips just don't make desirable shit. its like the GTR. its just as fast as a Porsche Tubro,, its more practical.. and it costs half as much but I just don't want a fucking GTR i want a Ferrari or a Porsche because they are just nicer objects.. they have soul ... they inspire passion. I don't know i am a fucking idiot but it just really bothers me for some reason.

Aight /wt/, need some advice. I have £1000 (about 1200 US for all you amerilards) to spend on a watch/ multiple watches. Thinking of either buying a few seikos like the alpinist and presage, or getting a used seamaster/speedy. Wot do?

Quartz Seamasters aren't so bad if you can stand quartz.
>>
Still undecided, /wt/

The Pelagos is more ruggedly handsome, but may get visually boring after the honeymoon phase.
Also I'd much rather have another lume marker instead of the date.

The Omega has a very nice design as well and the absence of a date window is a plus, but is more blingy; especially with the bracelet.
Also, yes it's Omega, but this particular model stands on its own merits.

I can get them for the same price btw.
>>
>>61340971

>>
>>61340971
Everyone on here hates the Coaxial escapement. I personally Don't believe it to be as bad as people make it out to be. The thing has a 4 year full warranty and is one of the most technologically advanced watches on the market .. especially at that price point. It looks better as well. The Pelagos is an all around solid watch with an excellent movement. You really can't go wrong either way. I really strongly suggest you try both on . I guarantee you will have your answer after they have both been on your wrist.
>>
>>61340944

However if you're going to spend serious money on a watch why the fuck would you go for a quartz instead of mechanical. Makes zero sense to me.

Assume this talking about the 9f GS that gets posted in here, which is a TC haq.

Plenty of interesting tech in quartz watches. TC, different inhibition approaches, high-frequency (262khz, 2.4mhz, 4mhz), fly by wire, viscous dampening, eco drive, complications (mechanical flyback, non-fly-by-wire sidereal time, etc), backlash protection, accelerometer-based power saving, ...
Not all quartz watches are created equal.

Tons of stories online.

For one thing, Steinhart doesn't seem to pressure test their watches. At all.
They just slap a pressure rating on the dial and ship it out.

Of course, you might get lucky and get a flawless one. And if you do have a problematic specimen it seems like Steinhart is pretty helpful.
Still.

So I recently found out about Ottoman watches and they are truly fascinating. They were mostly made by Swiss for the ottoman government, but the dial with arabic numerals is imo the sexiest looking dial I've ever seen.

They are pretty expensive, but considering /wtg/ is full of watch enthusiasts, I was wondering if anyone here has any info on these watches - specifically can say anything about their quality and feel in hand (heavy light etc)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kzIV95cpH5Q
>>
>>61344042
I've never seen that style of numeral - most Persian/Farsi dials I've seen have a more traditional script for the numerals.
>>
>>61344032
That's like exactly what they're made for.

Do mainsprings on automatic watches last longer than on handwound watches?
After all, on handwound watches the springs are loosened/tightened more, while spring tension remains more constant on automatics.

>>61344388
I'm not sure if there is much of a difference, I've never heard of anyone bring it up but it's an interesting thought. Automatics are kind of safer since it's impossible to wind the mainspring until it snaps, but you would have to be pretty retarded to force a handwinding movement that far either. Replacing the mainspring is a pretty common part of servicing anyway, I think it's almost always more of a precautionary standard maintenance thing rather than something done based on the condition of the spring.

>I still unironically think the 2892-A2 is one of the best mass produced movements of our time
>>
>>61347669
Why does the 2824 even exist still? It's bigger and not really better than the 2892 in any way. I guess maybe it's cheaper, but even like $4000 Tudors use modified 2824s over the 2892.
>>
>wearing a watch

what are you fucking gay?

If you have a job that requires constant notifications/updates (i.e. management) then a smart watch would be justified since there's an actual advantage but wearing a watch just makes you a tryhard faggot
>>
>>61347727
I have no idea. I bought a 2824 at one point over the 2892 because of cost. I imagine the big brands do the same. My next watch is going to be 2892 based no question. You cannot get a better movement than a top grade 2892 for less than several thousand dollars. That being said the 2824 is actually very accurate and well made for the price point. Mine stays within 5 seconds a day in either direction but i probably just got lucky.
>>
>>61347765
I work at a company where nobody asks for a company phone and nobody checks emails after-hours because if someone really needed you they would call. The real tryhard faggots are the ones who think they're so important they have to strap a cell phone to their wrist so it's in sight at all times.

Neat. That balance wheel looks abnormally large for the size of the movement, or is that just me? I guess that's why they need a bigass mainspring to drive it for 50 hours.

Also every time I see those helium escape valves on a watch I cringe. Check valves are nothing but trouble in my industry, but I guess the tiny ones used in watches seem to be reliable enough because I've never heard of someone's Seadweller flooding with water through the helium valve. I really prefer Seiko's method where they just don't use any helium valves and instead just make the watch super airtight and reinforce the crystal so it doesn't pop out if it gets overpressured. The Tuna watches are really underrated, those things are brick shithouses.

Not a lot. The calibre list indicates 42,000 cal 1230 pieces were made, starting 1973. There's pic related in the seamaster section. They don't even have my megasonic reference in the constellation section.
>>
>>61348327
Guess that means they wouldn't have anything about the strap options for the geneva megasonic then? I remember lawyeranon mentioning that some ADs offered a bracelet as a stock option, don't know what bracelet though.
>>
>>61348255
But the helium issue is something totally different from depth rating. The deepsea standing up to huge outside pressure at 4000m is totally different from it having to stand up to internal pressure from helium accumulation. The helium valve pops open when ascending.

And in the real world, the deepsea was taken down to 4000m on the outside of a submersible so there wasn't even any helium present ever anyway. Helium saturation is only used for diving by actual human divers.

>>61348355
I haven't been able to find any geneve branded pieces at all - I wonder if they were left out for being the "budget" line

What's to explain? They landed on rock with a light dust coating. Gravity is a 1/10g so the velocity of landing was a fraction of Earth's. Basic kinetic energy equation is relative to v^2. So 1/10 the speed means 1/100 the energy involved on landing.

In Budapest?
/blogpost/ I was staying in a hotel middle of Vaci Utca, and that area has like 6-7 watch stores in a 500m radius. Most sell shitty fashion tier and one was selling really high end stuff like JLC, AP and ALS. Unfortunately I only discovered it on my last day (Sunday) and it was closed. Not that I could afford any right now, but I would have love to see a ALS in person.

I got it from a small store called Centralora that is selling mostly Junkers/Zeppelin/Seiko/Casio/Fortis/Tissot from what I could tell.
It was the only store I could find in the city in walking/tram proximity that was selling Junkers/Zeppelin. They are indeed hard to come by, even in Europe.
Got a real good price on it too since I was traveling with my Non-European passport so I got 26% VAT back. Also they are really cool guys, the watchmaker cleaned my Alpinist free of charge and they gave both me and the girlfriend Parker pens.
End /blogpost/

I also have7640-1(shitty Nexus4 pic related) which I got 2 years ago while traveling in Munich. needless to say, Junkers/Zeppelin are much easier to come by there.

Seems they sell both high quality for patricians (Fortis), lots of mid-range for dads/NEETs/petty bourgeoisie (Tissot, Certina, Casio Zeppelin, Junkers), and low-end fashion garbage for the ignorant serfs (DD, Police, Hugo Boss).

It IS one of the best mass produced movements of the 1970s along with the Rolex 3035, Omega 56x/75x and Seiko 52xx.

It's an absolute travesty how underused the movement is by The Swatch Group themselves and others. Tudor has NO justification whatsoever for using the piece of shit 2824-2 over it in their non in-house models.

>>
>>61353357
It is better than the 2824 mostly because of the rotor bearing have a larger surface area but the 2824 is still a great movement as well. You are right in saying Tudor and Swatch Group Companies should be using the 2892 in their watches if they are not using an in house movement. This Website is very informative when it comes to swiss movements; if you have time i suggest giving a few articles a read. http://www.chronometrie.com/eta2824/eta2824.html

>Tudor has NO justification whatsoever for using the piece of shit 2824-2 over it in their non in-house models.

Except for the fact that Tudor modifies their ETA movements and makes them something better to begin with.

>You cannot get a better movement than a top grade 2892 for less than several thousand dollars.
This is true of new watches, yes.

If you like the styling you could try and dig up one of the 1990s Seiko's with the 4s15 movement (which is actually the 52xx from the 1970s) from before Seiko decided to move the movement to Credor.

You could also try and look for an ETA 2892-A2 Omega, as I hear they are not so expensive on the used market.

Otherwise you'd have to go back to watches from the 1970s to get a decent deal for those type of high end production movements.
>>
>>61347949
That is a gorgeous watch. The accuracy doesn't surprise me either. The 56x is an amazing movement.

I think that Chronometrie article really undersells the difference in inherent accuracy between the 2824 and the 2892.

It's my understanding that the 2892 tends to have significantly less positional variation and usually requires less adjustment to achieve that low positional variation compared to the 2892. It's also thinner, doesn't have any issues with excess wear from handwinding, and generally is reputed to suffer less wear over time than the 2824-2.

>>61353444
Yes, but why not use a better starting point to begin with? it's moot now anyway, as I wouldn't even consider buying a non in-house Tudor at this point given how small the price difference is for their in-house vs. non in-house models while giving you an all in-house silicon escapement, free sprung, balance bridge design.
>>
>>61353636
I mean Seamaster. And it's already done. The Jews at the Omega service wanted to replace the entire bracelet, all I had to do is fix one link with a staking tool.
>>
>>61353730

Yes those things are all true but a top grade or chronometer grade 2824 is still an exceptional movement so its hard for him to speak too ill about it. Its an interesting read nonetheless. Ill take a 2892 any day of the week over a 2824 without question but id take a 2824 over any orient/seiko movement until you hit the 8rxx movements.
>>
>>61353444
That's no excuse, they wouldn't need to do so many modifications if they started with the better base movement.
>>
>>61353842
The 8R movements are just 6Rs modified for the higher beat rate, there's nothing inherently better about them.
>>
>>61354104
what does that mean?
>>
>>61353594
Not sure, probably not more than ~2'000
>>
>>61354104
I'm not sure that's a fair argument considering that the raised beatrate and addition of a column wheel vertical clutch chronograph makes it a far better movement than the 6R it's based on.
>>
>>61353542
It's more about the moon than the speedmaster, really.

Regardless of how good or bad the watch is, it was used for the moon mission.
>>
>>61354315
Well of course the chronograph module is excellent but now you're comparing apples to oranges. As a three hand movement the 8Rs are not substantially different than the base 6R; even with the higher beat rate they're rated for the exact same accuracy.
>>
>>61354546
I wasn't the person who originally said I'd prefer the 2824-2 to any Seiko movement below the 8Rxx.

In any case, I'd personally way rather have an 8Rxx and regulate it myself than a Valjoux 7750 with its horizontal clutch and cam actuation, even though I agree the 2824-2 top is better than any of the 6Rxx variant movements from Seiko. I really wish Seiko would either bring back the 4s15 from Credor or design a new 28,800 bph mid-range automatic movement.

The Eterna-Matic is a good watch, Eterna was the first manufacturer to use ball bearings in automatic rotors. Hence the logo of five balls.

The other I don't know, but it's probably a good quality chronograph, though probably beat to shit and radioactive.

I definitely recommend servicing the Eterna, should be easy for a watchmaker and you'll have a nice watch. The chrono might be worth servicing too, but expect to pay a small fortune out the ass for service/parts. Watchmakers don't take in ancient Swiss chronos for cheap and rightfully so.

What the fuck do you mean radioactive
>>
>>61355561
You forget to mention that the movement is in-house/manufacture and that their movement design departement later turned into what is now known as ETA. Eterna movements are essentially the Proto-ETA movements.

This is why i don't own a seiko. The 8sxx is excellent and the 4s15 was excellent .. everything else is sub 2824-2 top standard if you are below these movements. the 8sxx is only in multi thousand dollar watches. You can build a 2892-A2 top grade watch for less than 1k. Pic related is only an example.. the dial is fucking hideous the hands are the wrong size and casing screws don't cost this much but you get the idea.
