How come foobar tells me .m4a files are lossy when I'm trying to make 320 CBR ones out of them?
m4a is supposed to be ALAC right?
Is it perhaps because foobar doesn't have a proper transcoder for it? Assuming that's the case, why the fuck is it in the list then?
>>
I have a Virgin Media Superhub, Virgin Media is my ISP, the Superhub is a router and modem in one, so that's the only thing in.

The super hub is a bit shit though, if I bought a router would that improve things? I have no idea on this stuff.
How are WifI extenders? Meme or not?

Thanks
>>
>>61318404
m4a is just the container, usually for AAC but it supports others
ALAC is just one of the formats the container supports, but I guess foobar does not support encoding it.

Intel processors are a nightmare
Could someone just help me understanding the i5-7Y54 vs the i5-6200u?
>>
>>61318461
If your WiFi is shit but your wired and internet are fine then getting a new router/ap could help, sure.
>>
>>61318539

>>

Thanks, Is it going to be a significant difference in speed or just very marginal?
They're a gen apart I think, but I don't really know much.
>>

>new router/ap
ap?
Also, yeah Wired is fine. It's just wireless, the range is absolutely shit and it seems to struggle and drop out.

I'm just a bit confused because I have a superhub though from my ISP. The modem and router are in one, how would I set up a separate new router and replace the old?

I'm having trouble displaying a 16:9 1080p display on my Samsung Smart TV. Even when I hooked HDMI cables, set the cable box and TV to 16:9 (well, actually screen fit to avoid overscan), I get black bars surrounding the TV screen, when I didn't zoom in at all. I have another Samsung HDTV which is not the smart one but I managed to set that one up correctly and I get widescreen/letterbox.
>>
>>61318604
probably somewhat marginal, depends on how the 7Y54's turbo performs

AP = Access Point, aka wireless router
Not the guy from before, from what I remember of having Virgin 4 years ago you could set it to be only a modem, sending the connection along one of the ethernet ports to another router. If you have their 300Mb/s internet, that would slow you down though (can't remember if the ethernet ports are gigabit or not).

When I turn on my iPhone, it goes into recovery mode (with the iTunes logo on the screen). When I connect it to my PC, it asks to restore the phone, and when I try to restore it, I get an error (pic related).

What do? I tried going into DFU mode but it's the same shit.
>>
>>61318604
You just turn the wifi of on the shit one and plug the new one into an Ethernet port of the old one. Probably have to configure the new one to either be a bridge or to get an address from the old one.

I asked in the headphone general but upon thinking about it it's probably not really the right general for it, so I'll try here.

I get an awful lot of static/background noise when using a wired mic, tried both front and back 3.5mm ports, as well as a 3.5mm to USB passthrough. It doesn't seem to be related to ambient fan noise as I can walk 10 feet from my PC or cup the microphone and the noise is still there.

I know it could be anything, but I've got two questions.

One, at the moment I've got a decent pair of studio monitors that for some reason are extremely loud. Everything I play has to be at 1-5% volume or it's deafening. Could the reason the static is so prominent be because I'm listening to things on such a low volume, which sounds fine in my ears, but there's a disparity with microphone playback being so loud, and thus the static being prominent?

And secondly, would a wireless headset help at all? I'm in the market as my old microphone headset broke and these studio monitors have no microphone, so I'm having to wrap my old pair of broken headphones around my neck to use the mic while using my monitors. But I'm not sure if it would help at all, if the issue is with static issues inside my PC, or dodgy I/O, etc.

Thanks for the help lads. I don't have 300mbps, I just have the Virgin Superhub 1 at 50mbps and my laptop is ass at picking up the Wifi and maintaining it well.

Do you think a Wifi extender would be better or am I better off with a new router?
I've sort of looked at both but don't know which I'd be better off with. The superhub I do have is poor, but when it comes to routers I've no idea what to look for or how to even decide on a good one for myself.
Extenders seem more basic but I don't know if they're as good, or even just the same really

Thanks for the help.
Would the difference be noticeable in some light gaming?
Obviously looking at U and Y processors I'm not looking to do anything too heavy, but some Photoshop, as well as some light video editing is probably going to be part of it.

It's just hard to tell because Google just gives a bunch of benchmark sites.
Just to confirm, the i5-6200U is going to be better, but by very little to the point of not being noticeable in usage?
>>
>>61319234
The synthetic I looked at gives about a 10% difference, but as I mentioned before it really depends on how the turbo mode of the 7Y54 holds up under real world conditions.

>How come foobar tells me .m4a files are lossy when I'm trying to make 320 CBR ones out of them?
perhaps because it makes no sense for a lossless file to be "320" nor "CBR", these only apply to lossy codecs
you can't set the bitrate for lossless files, as it uses whatever it needs to not cause any loss
also m4a is just a container, not an audio codec

I have a nvidia shield that will be running plex or kodi and I want to buy/build a NAS that can hold all of my chinese cartoons, all in mkv format. I'll probably be putting live action bluray rips and other things on there as well.

While my primary use case will be my shield media server, I'd also like to have the flexibility to play on other devices as well, like my laptops.

What kind of NAS should I be looking for? I'm checking out a couple Synology boxes but I'm confused about what determines if they support MKVs. Additionally I'm not against building a NS but prebuild options do take up less space which is nice.

Mobile Pentium M (Centrino? or Celeron?)
Either way you'll not get much OpenSource action on either.
Centrino chips are shit for *Nix so's Celeron although you'll probably find loads of closed course proprietry shit with Celeron or iCore.
My advise would be shop around and pick up an alternative with an open source chip like amd geode or intel atom - before cherry trail. Or search around for older SGI, SPARC or Mips based like Atheros or PowerPC. You wont get Lie-Nux or Berkley in-Secure demon on anything else!

How does subnetting work? I now there are 3 (major) IP classes. Does a subnet get called with the net-id and then forwards the connection to the appriopriate subnet or does every network has a public subnet-mask?

Not anymore. Those classes have become obsolete decades ago.

>does every network has a public subnet-mask?
Yes.

>So basically how do other computers know how to communicate with you if you use a subnet mask different from the ip-classes.
Subnets play no role in transmitting packets between different networks. A network with subnet mask delineates a range of addresses that can communicate with each other directly. Getting packets from one network (= subnet) to another uses an entirely different mechanism, namely Routing.

They're different products, same model number is kinda irrelevant. The Pentium is bit newer and usually faster from he higher clock speed.
>>

>What's the difference between a Core 2 Duo and a Pentium with the same model name? Is the C2D more powerful?
In this particular case, the Pentium is a newer and faster version of the earlier C2D processor. More generally, Intel's naming scheme is a complete mess; you'll need to compare individual processor to make sense of it.

Also, would downloading/uploading a UTF-8 file via FTP on ASCII mode ever corrupt it?

How are older Apple products? Mainly something like a 2012 MacBook pro. Buddy is selling his and I was wondering if they're worth it. Build quality wise as well as serviceability. Did Apple products in 2012 offer good screens? How about their keyboards? I would run Windows or Linux on it via boot camp.

Unless there is a good replacement for my current T420. To light bleed and overall lack of screen quality on my Thinkpad is really annoying.

Barring all this apple talk, what are good cheap-ish ($500 Max for laptop itself, willing to spend more for parts if need be) alternatives for a daily use laptop?

Got a job question for you guys.

So I interviewed with a local company (Place A) for an entry level engineering position yesterday, and it went extremely well. I phone interviewed with a separate place for an entry level engineering position today in another state (Place B), but they want to go ahead and set up a plane ticket for me to come out there sometime next week. Place A said they would get back to me by the end of the week, and I would much rather work at Place A; but I also just saw the job for Place A was reposted on Indeed 3 hours ago.

I do not want to work at Place B at all, due to their extreme working hours that I did not find out about until the interview. Is it ok for me to contact Place A a day after the first interview and using possible leverage from Place B to speed up the hiring process? Is the job being reposted bad, even if they said during the interview they needed to bring a lot of new people in? I am at a loss because I have been applying for months, and this is my first great opportunity.

If someone could help a brother out I would appreciate it
>>
>>61322517
Until you have an job offer from B in your hand, you don't have leverage.

I know the simplest things about programming.
Matrix, Arrays, functions, procedures, easy shit like that.
But now what? What should I learn to complete my not-knowledge?

I want to start learning C++, but the only language I know is Pascal, if that matters.

Ok, so a couple of days ago, I couldn't access empornium.me. Whenever I try to visit the webpage, it times out in firefox, chrome, etc.. A ping will also timeout. The torrents I'm seeding also show an error (tracker timed out). But if I check the site from any place other than my home, I can get in. What can I do? I've already changed the dns address, from the ones my ISP gave me to the google ones, and I've the same result. Any ideas?
>>
>>61322517
>using possible leverage from Place B to speed up the hiring process
that's a hit or miss, some will actually let you go because of that, because they would think you are no longer within their reach

>Is the job being reposted bad
do you know how many people are needed on that position? You can ask that question in your interview. I wouldn't think too much about it because either those posts are usually paid already and on a schedule, or they are just waiting a bit more to find someone better than you.

IT jobs in general tend to go overtime anyway if there are problems, have you never experience that? If B is eager to get you you can try asking for more salary especially justifying that you are supposed to move somewhere else
>>
>>61322665
You are right. I am just very nervous about this, especially since they reposted the job the day after I went in. Graduating sucks, I don't get why entry level is so hard to get. thanks for the input
>>
>>61322754
They didn't specifically say how many people they needed, they just said they need to bring in a lot of people to work there cause of upcoming projects.

I wouldn't mind a little overtime but Place B was talking, they dont have weekend breaks or anything; minimum 10 hour days, usually into 12 or 16 or even 20 on some projects. I will have to say no to Place B for that, but hopefully they just forget about me cause I would not even have applied had I known. Place A is ideal for me, but it worries me they reposted it. I've heard it all before, we'll get back to you at the end of the week, yet silence. Sorry dude just nervous about it all since I only have a couple weeks before I have to go back home and work some shitty part time pizza job to pay bills cause they live in a shitty small town

>>

>Will try that later

>>
>>61322820
If they want you, they'll make an effort to get you.
I'd rather go with B if you can no longer wait or try your luck at finding another job, but probably because I'm used to working late hours already. I even open my work laptop when at home just to check on emails or see if anyone fucked up our repository build
>>
>>61322709
bump
>>
>>61322820
>>61322986
another reason I could think of why A is stalling is because they're also waiting. Maybe the project requires a contract or approval from the client's side before hiring anyone. They don't want to hire you yet while can't make a deal on their end. Nothing you can do about that.

ASUS 270E Boot Issues.jpg

I'm having some issues booting my computer after installing new parts. It managed to boot for a while and I managed to far enough to install Windows 7 and started updating drivers and shut it down for a while. When I came back to turn it on, it no longer would. I plug in the PSU, flip the PSU switch on, and press the power button on the case. The rear fan twitches when I press the power button the first time, the motherboard standby LED lights up orange along with the rainbow LED, but no fans spin nor any other sign of life. The monitors recognize they are plugged into the graphics card, but not the keyboard or mouse in the rear USB. Here is what I'm working with: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/Bv6xM8

I've tired moving the RAM to each slot, removing the graphics card, double checked the connections, but no luck. Does anyone have an idea of what I'm missing that's causing it to not boot?

I have ~3,000 songs on my phone's SD card, mostly in mp3 format with a few albums in FLAC. I'm having a few problems.

Firstly, doing a full backup to my computer is a real bitch, always incredibly slow, and the transfer always ends up stopping before fully completed. I assume this is a problem with a corrupted file within my music folder, but I can't find it. I'm usually able to weed these out by finding the file that measures 0B, but there's none there.

Secondly, the playlists that I create within my phone's various music players (currently BlackPlayer) are continually disappearing/dropping songs. This isn't a problem with any one player but rather, I think, with the SD card being re-scanned and the playlists then being lost. I'm not as technologically literate as most on this board but from what I can tell a .m3a file is a 'hard' playlist (i.e., it will have the list of songs hard-coded within it) rather than relying on my phone's wishy-washy players; how do I create one?

If I could just get all my songs onto my PC then I would be happy enough to sanitise all of the tags, get album art, create playlists, etc. with MusicBee then reload everything onto my phone when it inevitably fucks up on me again.

I recently lost over 100 of my most recently-downloaded songs due to this kind of bollocks.

How do I sort out my messy music collection?

The value.
funcInt
is an integer, not a pointer. After
funcInt = param;
it stores a copy of the value pointed to by param. That copy is then manipulated in the next statement.

different cases for different things
if something shouldn't be changed you can tell that to the compiler so that if anything tries to change it it reports an error
if you just need a copy of it without needing the object itself, use no reference
if you need the object itself, pass the reference
if you need more control of the object than a reference, pass a pointer
>>
>>61325932
For integers, no. For larger objects, sometimes you want to avoid making an unnecessary copy, which takes time.

I've tried to figure this out for a bit. I'm trying to record in game chat audio for a ps4. With the smallest cost without to big of a drop in quality. If there's any other ideas I'd appreciate it. When I Google it's a bunch of idiots that don't know to check a box to share audio. But in game chat works game server side and PlayStation doesn't record that. Any tips ?

>>
>>61327511
You do not simply stick in an HDD with Windows on it in a new build and expect everything to work fine, Windows out of the box doesn't work that way because of driver dependency. This isn't like linux or a live linux/windows on a usb.
What you do when you get your new SSD, is install Windows on it, then plug the old drive in. But right after plugging it in make sure to go to BIOS and change boot order to be SSD first.

Point 2 is most likely an overvolt in which is nothing to worry about as the apc has a transformer in it that can regulate the voltage going in to your eletronics. This will only become a problem if you are constantly overvolting though.
Test your apc to make sure everything is working within bounds
