If you want help:
>Assemble your parts list
https://pcpartpicker.com/
>State the budget for your build (and country if not the USA)
>List games/software you use often, as well as your monitor resolution + refresh rate
>Clarify your goal for build improvements: lower price or improved specs?
How to assemble a PC, select components & more (kind of outdated)
https://wiki.installgentoo.com/index.php?title=Build_a_PC

CPUs:
No i5 unless discounted
>G4560/G4600 - Budget builds (<$500)
>R5 1400 - Cheapest quad core you can get (Ryzen 3 soon)
>R5 1500x - Good but up to 1600 if you can
>R5 1600 - Best value for higher fps gaming / mixed usage; 1600x if you want higher stock clocks
>i7 7700k - 144hz only
>R7/Used Xeon/Threadripper - Compute/Multitask/VM/mixed use; Not for just gaming

GPUs:
Coin miners have driven price up and stock down, waiting to buy a GPU might be wiser
>Integrated CPU Graphics - Desktop stuff and very light games
>GTX 1050(Ti) - Lower end budget cards, drop settings on newer games, RX560 beaten by both
>RX570 - 1080p@60~hz maxed, running most maxed older games at 100~Hz
>RX580 and GTX1060 6GB - 1080p@80hz maxed, 1440p@60hz at lower settings; RX580 better in newer games
>GTX 1070 - 1080p@130hz /1440p@60hz at high
>GTX 1080 - 1080p@144hz / 1440p@60hz maxed, 4k@60hz in a few games; Probably the highest end card you need for 1080p/1440p
>GTX 1080Ti - 1440p@144hz and 4k@60hz maxed/high in many games

RAM:
>Check your Mobo QVL before buying any RAM
>Ryzen CPUs benefits a lot from high speed RAM

General:
ALWAYS LOOK AT PRODUCT REVIEWS!
Always consider an SSD. Try buying a large SSD for what you'd pay for your SSD+HDD combined, and add a HDD later
NVMe SSDs aren't for a faster OS boot, they're for productivity/scratch disk/VMs. NVMe and M.2 are not the same thing, M.2 is a form factor.
The Ryzen lineup comes with surprisingly good stock coolers. consider using them over any <$30 cooler.
Buying used is perfectly fine for budgets (PSU excluded)

First for cable management is sorcery.
I've built 6 or 7 computers and every time, the cables are too long and bulge the side case if I try to hide them. Even when using a fully modular PSU, the cables have excess connectors. Oh, and there's no chance in hell of routing the PSU mobo cable behind the side cover. It's too damn thicc.
And how the hell should I route the fan cables? They always seem to dangle through the case like vines and the connectors end up sitting at the bottom of the case and it's ugly.

Best hard drive to get? Was gonna get an HGST refurb as it has the best price/gb, but a decent amount of reviews list them as doa or loud. Used WD Blue in the past but they have some of the slower read/write speeds and are overpriced past 1tb drives.
>>
>>61307248
Is Seagate trustworthy now?
>>
>>61307400
I don't know, but with the low price and raid 5, if they start failing fast, i could always replace the failing ones with WD Red and lesson learned
>>
>>61307248
>Seagate Archives
Ditch them unless you're only writing to the RAID array once. Those use SMR platters, which causes excessive write wear. They also slow down to a crawl if you write files larger than the cache portion of the drive or if you try to do multiple write operations to the array.
Those drives are marketed as "Archive" storage because of how shitty and short-lasting SMR drives are for normal usage.

>>61307400
All HDD manufacturers have roughly the same reliability. Just make sure to check your drives before putting them to use. Pre-clear them and do a full format.

Currently have an EVGA GTX 970 and it's doing pretty well. However I'm a linux user and every time I try to use a new distro it just gives me problems on install and I'm tired of it. I'm looking at some AMD cards but wonder which are worth upgrading to for an actual upgrade. The 970 is a little old but still capable. I mostly want it for the OpenCl power and video editing. I'm not using adobe shit, mostly open source, free programs.

Any advice /g/? It's time for me to upgrade and I'm on an 1150 mobo. Do I upgrade to the 1151 or would Ryzen be the way to go? Are there pros and cons to either the newer gen Intels or Ryzens? Or should I wait until Intel responds to Ryzen?
>>
>>61307542
>I'm going to write 300 gb / month
Sequential writes? Or smaller/random writes? If they're largely sequential writes (files larger than 1MB) I think you're fine with SMR drives then, as long as you don't constantly hammer the array with writes. The controller in the SMR drives tend to be smart about where they store data in order to prevent itself from deleting underlying tracks unnecessarily.
>>
>>61307553
No AMD cards are really an upgrade. The RX 580 isn't considerably faster except where the added VRAM is a consideration.
Not that it matters, since you can't buy one anyway.

>>
>>61307693
No, I'll only recommend an FM2+ CPU to people who are trying to learn how to overclock.
Bentium G4560 and an H110 or B250 motherboard.
>>
>>61307665
The Fury is not only a power-guzzling behemoth, but also barely worth considering. The performance is around 1070 level.
Unless you are VRAM starved, you'd be looking at a 1080, possibly RX Vega (assuming it's a better showing than FE) for a notable performance bump over a 970.

Again, not that it matters, since even Fury is also impossible to find at a price worth buying.

Pls help fast.

I'm about to buy two GTX 480's for the memes, but do they support Dual Link DVI? I have one of those Korean monitors with no scaler (Qnix QX2710) which will only accept a signal from DVI, if you plug anything else in it just goes through test images. I'm kind of thick about how these work, at the minute I'm running my monitor off a DVI-D port, looks like a 480 only has DVI-I, will it work?

Pic related is the outputs if it helps, thanks.

>>
So what are the founders editions for the 1070 and 1080? Are they just memes that I should avoid at all costs? They seem relatively cheap online right now.
>>
>>61308286
PSU I'm not sure about, length wise a a GPU like that should fit, it's thickness is what you want to worry about. Looks like the case is only twice the height of an IO shield, if it does fit it will be one hell of a tight fit.

t. once cut up a prebuilt case to put a 7970 in it

>>61308331
They are memes. Unless you have an utterly shit case and need the heat to vent straight out the back, just buy something else.

The S340's default configuration is 2x120mm pre-mounted as rear/top exhaust.

Going for just air cooled, and until I get fans for the remaining two slots, is rear exhaust and front intake a better configuration?

Also, for the new front fans, would it be better to match the CFM of the exhausts by getting 2x120s or getting 2x140s for positive pressure?
>>
>>61308286
You need a mITX or a really rare dual PCIe slot mATX board for that chassis, phampai
only a single slot card will fit in there, since the 16x slot is on the "bottom" of the board, getting in the way of the chassis itself.

You're fucked.

>>61308183
p-pls respond, the listing is about to end on ebay in 10mins.

Better to have push/pull imo.
I'd go for the largest fans the case was meant to mount. Quieter, or more CFM for the same mount.

Allow me to save you the money: it is, and don't do it. The scaling isn't there, the support isn't there, but the heat and power draw certainly is.
SLI/CF was never good, then or now.
>>
>>61308495
NVME drives are ideal for scratch disks etc because of their immense speed. You would get most out of your build to have a regular SSD for windows and applications, and dedicate the NVME disc as a scratch disk etc.
>>
>>61308479
It's probably wasted time anyway honestly. Just start a mITX build from scratch in one of these super small cases. It's gonna be much less trouble and you'll spend about the same money eventually.
What are you trying to do with it anyway?
>>
>>61308479
Definitely not
The cut-off for the top of the case is right under the second PCIe slot. Look at the gap between the end of that AB350M-HDV board and the second PCIe slot. You can fit another PCIe slot in that gap.
Mini ITX is your best (and - as far as AM4 is concerned, your only) bet

I don't plan on going past $1100 with my first build. I won't be using this for games, but rather Blender/3dCoat modeling, programming, and Paint Tool SAI stuff. Light video editing as well. The build is Linux-based, and would also be running a RAID 10 setup.

Since this is my first build, I just want to know of anything I should consider getting instead. The GPU I decided to buy just went off of market here, but I have good faith it will come back once this whole "fork 3 more new altcoins every week just to say you own one" fad dies over. Regardless, I'm not the best with GPU's so if i should get something else please let me know.

Also, I need a new monitor and I can't decide between https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00NZTKOQI/ref=twister_B01MRVSSRL?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1 and https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0149QBOF0/ref=psdc_1292115011_t2_B00P0EQD1Q so help with that would be appreciated too.

to be able to take my pc between home and university. i understand that i could just leave my pc at home and use a laptop and a games console as a more optimal setup but i'm not a fan of consoles personally and i also do some premiere pro production on the side as a hobby which would probably kill any cheap laptop other than the really high end macbooks or whatever.

The simple answer is no, there's no easy way of checking.

The chances of anyone doing significant damage to a 1080Ti in the short time it's been released is incredibly small, no one buys a 1080Ti for 24/7 operation like they would, for example, an RX580 or 1060Ti.

Does it have a warranty? Generally if a GPU works for the first week you have it, it should have a pretty good chance of lasting as long as it's serviceable life, but I don't know how I'd feel throwing so much money at something with no warranty.
>>
>>61308498
I've been saying this whole time that Intel wasn't making any money off of the g4560, it was purely a reaction to Ryzen's announcement. Intel was somehow undercutting AMD's FM2+ CPUs with better performance, it didn't add up.
>>
>>61308542
>that build
First off, get Ryzen either the 1600 or 1700 they crush anything intel spews out for the same price in the tasts you're handling. The stock cooler ia good enough, unlike in your build.

Then, you want 4 HDDs on an ITX? are you crazy? Go mATX, don't be a fag. Also many raid setups can be done trough the extra pcie expansion slots. Alsk, with mATX yoi can find 4x8 RAM deals which can be cheaper

You can get 3T ultrastars for like $6 more each.

Get a SSD for the OS and Software (blender, etc)

Get a 550-600W well rated and 80+gold.

That GPU is good, but a 1050-1050ti will do the job if you can't find any.

Just need a confirmation, does MSI B250I PRO ITX board support full speed for an SSD such as the 960 EVO?

>1 x M.2 slot (Key M slot on the bottom of the motherboard)
- Supports up to PCIe 3.0 x4 and SATA 6Gb/s

I think this means it does, but i'm kind of sketchy since it's the cheapest B250 ITX.
>>
>>61308950
That was my reasoning as well, that even if someone did buy it for mining only to sell it later, they wouldn't have done significant damage. As far as warranty goes, i'm not sure but i fear not.
Amazon warehouse allows you to give it back free of charge with full refund within two months. It's a gygabyte aorus. They have online warranty signup. Once i receive it i'll see if it's already been used by the previous owner. In that case i'll decide whether to send it back or not.
>>
>>61309015
Yes
B250 has PCIe Gen 3.0 lanes from the chipset (unlike all AM4 motherboard)
>>
>>61309041
Wait, does this mean it won't use any of the physical PCIe lanes?
>>
>>61308950
Also amazon is usually pretty good at explaining what's wrong with an used product.
The description said small imperfections on the surface of the product, that could be a peeled off plastic transparent sticker, and a slightly damaged box. But no missing cd driver or documentation. So idk i'm just hoping it all goes ok.
Worst case i use it for a month and bask in the glory of an actually good card instead of my radeon HD 6970, and return it for full refund.
>>
>>61309077
Yes, the manual for the motherboard states that the lanes for the slot is coming from the chipset, not the CPU's dedicated PCIe lanes.
>>
>>61309037
>It's a gygabyte aorus
Solid card, it's the one I'm using, super quiet under load. Doesn't look too retarded once it's installed either.

Sounds like you don't have a whole lot to lose given the return period, just buy it and see how it goes, if it's shit, return it.

The ITX i'm getting is built for RAID/NAS setups. though. Kinda don't see the benefit of getting a mATX and having to settle for an expansion slot, because the integrated RAID support that the mobo has promises faster speeds. However, this is my first time, and everything else you said seems right. Thanks, anon, I'll try it out.

>Hardware RAID
Pls no.
Software RAID has gotten to the point that the performance differential is functionally irrelevant, while not being a PITA to fiddle around with.

This isn't the best place to ask about NAS. Ask about it in the dedicated NAS threads which occasionally appear.
>>
>>61309165
>hoping for some miracle software
Sadly not, Nvidia has even started hiding the ASIC quality on Pascal cards. I guess because they all overclock the same anyway.
>>
>>61309178
>This isn't the best place to ask about NAS
Nigger, this is a PC Building General (which shouldn't be on 4chan anyway, all generals are cancer). NAS are PCs.
>>
>>61309209
How best to build a good NAS requires more distinct knowledge than what is found ITT. Questions of how best to fit the hardware choices for your needs, questions of filesystems, OS, redundancy, plugins, compatibility, best practices, etc. aren't things discussed here.
99% of people who are here have never built a NAS, and aren't interested in anything beyond PC gaming or occasionally editing.

Pretty good... just why the 1TB SSD? I'd get a 500Gig one and upgrade to a R7 1700.
Also, it's always better to have dual sticks of ram, so 2x8GB will have better bandwith, and you can always drop two extra ones ro get 32GB. Ryzen like fast ram, so look for a 2400-2667 frwquency ram kit, but it's not necessary.

If this is for actual work rather than fucking around, I'd just go ham and just get a R7 1700.
I strongly disagree with the other poster. You don't need 550W for this build, and could easily manage with 450W. Also, efficiency doesn't determine quality. How efficient you want it to be is up to you.

RAM will not run at 3200MHz out of the box, simply install it in your B350 and update your BIOS and then Overclock it to 3200MHz+
I think it's amazing that it's not common knowledge that when manufactures say the RAM speed is X MHz it actually isn't out of the box.
>>
>>61311562
Not him, but I'm building a similar system too and apparently there's some problem if you aren't using a subset of memory chips based on Samsung B-die. People have troubles OCing other kinds of RAM to 3200 even though QVL states you should be able to do that.

The problem is, I can't find any confirmed Samsung B-die 16Gb kits in my local shops.

>>61311602
You will just have to do your research on what RAM is B-die, if you google it you can find some charts of what is what.
You might have to buy online if 3200Mhz means that much to you

I'm utterly confused by RAM gimmicks for Ryzen-compatible mobos, like what's even going on here. Half the internet suggests to go only for official QVL supported RAM, the other half claims they run unsupported ram at 3000-3200Mhz after BIOS update without any problem. Some tell stories about buying only memory with samsung b-die chip as it's the ideal option for Ryzen system, then some other guy would say that other chips incompatibilities were fixed with a BIOS update and you shouldn't care as much and go for higher Mhz sticks even if they aren't currently on QVL. Also on Corsair forums people complain that majority of sticks weren't even tested yet to make up some consensus on the topic.
Help me make sense of all this, or better yet, answer this:
My mobo is ASRock AB350M-Pro4, CPU is R5 1600
This stick is on official QVL https://www.gskill.com/en/product/f4-2400c15d-8gvr
This stick is exactly the same model, but higher speed and IS NOT on QVL https://www.gskill.com/en/product/f4-3000c15d-8gvr

I have the 3000Mhz stick in local store ready to buy and I was going for it before I even knew all the bullshit about ram issues, but it's not on QVL. Stick that I have in local store that ARE on QVL are either sub 2400Mhz or 16gb+ capacity which I do not need.
What's my move here? Can I go for the higher speed model of the stick that's officialy supported and will it be ok? Or should I stick with QVL list even though I don't have proper sticks nearby?

Any comments from ASRock mobo users are welcome

So I currently own pic related (aware now that the budget allocation sucks dick, could have gotten a G4560 and a 470 if I had waited literally one week)

I'm looking to upgrade to Ryzen, and I have a couple questions:

Are there any significant downsides to going to a mini tower? Will it be harder to maintain decent temperatures in a smaller case? I ask because the cheaper mobos are all mATX, and my current ghetto midtower is mostly empty.

Should I get the 1600x over the 1600 if the difference is only 20USD? I'd be using an aftermarket cooler to OC anyway, but I have no idea how much headroom the higher bin would afford.

What's the best B350 mobo for gaming? Right now I'm undecided between the MSI B350M GAMING PRO, MSI B350M Mortar, MSI B350M PRO-VDH, and the ASRock AB350M PRO4. Is there going to be a significant difference between any of those? I don't expect to need more than two RAM slots.

Guess I'll spring for an AIO when the opportunity presents itself.

One more question. If it were mounted to the front panel, would the fans need to be intake or exhaust?
Seems weird to pull the heat to the front only to push it back through the case to, say, the rear exhaust.
Yet it also seems weird to push it out the front and possibly use your other fans as intakes (especially without readily available dust filters).

I've got about 76mm of clearance height for a CPU cooler.

Everything is bought minus this for an Elite 110 case. My RAM is a low profile, so RAM clearance isn't an issue either.

Color doesn't matter. After research, and getting /g/ opinions, these seem like the most consistent in benchmarks and quality. Budget is $100. I want to shoot for an air cooler low profile to fit and reasonable ambient noise during idle.

I still cant decide which one to get. CPU is from another computer, i5-7600k. Plan on overclocking but not to the max. Just a cozy medium.

God damnit. Which trigger do I pull?

This, trying to buy a card that will last 4 years and trying to hit x resolution at ultra are two completely different things. To be a graphics whore/144Hz whore when you're not rich you really have to get comfortable trading on Craigslist or Ebay, the best thing to do is buy the best you can afford either used or after the initial price drop and then sell when something better comes out and repeat the process. Full towers are dumb, especially for your build, which is nothing special space-wise.

Efficiency doesn't (technically) determine quality. You can have shitty plats, great bronze units. But there is a rough correlation.
Seasonic doesn't make bad PSUs. Buy what you want, but if you are already dropping that much cash, I'd say spring for their Focus or Prime series units. You can probably afford it. But if you went cheaper, no harm.
A 650W would support any conceivable config outside of multi-GPU. Don't go beyond, and you could probably manage with 550W.

>>61312941
I wouldn't be so sure there'll be a glut of cheap used cards. Everything would have to line up right for the miners to sell out in big numbers. Eth would either have to drop far enough that mining stopped being profitable at any real-world electricity cost, or go to proof-of-stake like they've talked about but never done. And, in addition, there would have to be no other altcoins that remained profitable to mine. If some coins remain profitable, a lot of miners won't sell their cards, they'll just keep going continuing to try to pay them off.

I heard it's easier to assemble, I never really assembled a PC from a scratch before. And I'm planning to add a different graphics card later, aren't some of those pretty huge? I was worrying about going for a midi-tower because it's not really a standard so you can have ones that are big enough and ones that aren't, and I've seen people drilling them out to fit in bigger GPUs.

The thing with PSUs is that I don't have much choice where I live, I mean I have like 2 Seasonics that are over 300Wt in local shops. No suitable EVGAs. I really don't want to order a PSU by mail. I'm looking at the available ones... are Cooler Masters OK? Zalman? Foxconn? Thermaltake? I understand how important a quality PSU is.

You have to flash before you install the new CPU otherwise it won't POST. Go to the vendor's website and look up your board. There should be a support tab or something where you can find BIOS updates. Download, install on a USB, reboot into BIOS, select the flash option and choose the correct file. MAKE SURE IT"S THE RIGHT FILE FOR THE RIGHT MOTHERBOARD. It will take a while, don't freak out if it looks like nothing's happening or it boot cycles a few times.

Okay, so I've had a really rough day, and any help at all would be a godsend.

So last night my house had a power surge, and I guess I never flushed my surge protector, and it blew my motherboard. I bought a replacement today, but my CPU was too old for my new motherboard, and after buying a new one of those I realized that my motherboard was DDR4-only, so I had to buy new RAM.

I finally managed to get everything up and running, but now my graphics card isn't being detected. It's not in device manager or anything, and I can't install new drivers for it because Nvidia doesn't allow you to without an installed graphics card.

Is there any idea someone can come up with to help me out here? I've essentially rebuilt my computer, I really don't want to buy another card as well.

The 7700k performance will be wasted on a 60hz screen, and an R7 1700 won't provide much advantage over an R5 1600 (unless the non-gaming stuff you do scales from more threads)
7600k is not even to be considered unless you like big FPS drop, stuttering and high CPU usage. Witcher 3, BF1 and GTA V are among the most CPU intensive AAA games and all three even manage to use 16 threads so an R5 1600 will handle all three extremely well
>>
>>61313617
>gaming only
7600k will get slightly better frames now, but age poorly as it's 4c/4t.
1600(x) will have better real world performance if you have anything besides the game running, such as VoIP, music player, twitch on second monitor, and will age much better as a 6c/12t

1700 and 7700k are both overkill for gaming but if you have the money there's nothing wrong with either

Sorry, okay, that's clear then. I'd gladly buy EVGA or Seasonic but my choice is really limited.

I was looking at this PSU:
http://www.corsair.com/en-eu/sf-series-sf600-600-watt-80-plus-gold-certified-high-performance-sfx-psu-e
doesn't seem too cheap. Is it fine? If it's not, I'd probably settle for a 520W Seasonic, but I'd like to have those extra Watts just in case.
>>

>>
>>61313540
Eh, that's not true. Those just have lots of brand recognition. EVGA and Corsair have bad units, Thermaltake and Silverstone have good units, it's a mixed bag. You just need to know your way around the OEMs they use.
Or just buy Seasonic. That usually makes thing simpler.

Should i just go with the 1600x and a b350 motherboard then? Its alot cheaper and if im using the 1600x will there be less cpu usage in the games?, (currently on a i5 4460 and the stuttering is crazy bc the cpu hits 100% while the 1070 hits 50%)
>>
>>61313579
Fuck off shill, everyone knows that the Ryzen 7 consistently underperforms in gaming tests when compared to the i7 family. It can beat a i5 no problem, but an i7? no fucking way. Ryzen's strength is in rendering video and fucking with spreadsheets, not gaming.

Lot cheaper than what?
1600x is about $40 - $50 more expensive than a 1600 because of the higher price and required cooler, so you'd be better off going with an R5 1600 (and overclock in a few years if you feel like you're not getting enough performance from it)
Yes, there will be less CPU usage. A 4460 only has 4 threads to work with so of course it's on it's knees in the games you listed, but the R5 1600 has twelve threads instead. Whenever an i5 reach 100% in a game, the 1600 in the same scenario would generally be at 50 - 60%, so there really is plenty of room to run CPU intensive things on this CPU.
>>
Shit, I posted the wrong PSU again. Here's the one I'm considering:

http://www.corsair.com/en-gb/cx-series-cx650-650-watt-80-plus-bronze-certified-atx-psu-eu

>>61313799
You are not going to replicate the conditions of a benchmark when gaming. When you have shit open in the background, the additional threads will come into play.
>>
Is there any point in changing from a FX-6300 to a G4560? My motherboard just broke and I was just going to buy a new one, but since the AM3+ is a dead socket now, I was wondering if it would be worth to buy a new processor, motherboard and ram, and that would be a pretty big investment since I'm on a really tight budget and DDR4 is pretty expensive right now, and I don't know if it's worth to pay the bigger price.

I'm not really big into games, all the games I play are not that demanding, so I probably wouldn't feel a difference if that matters.
