Should I ditch Debian for openSUSE?
>>
Yes. SUSE is awesome
>>
>>61305301
Debby Anne for Suzi. :^)
>>
>>61305301
but why would you want to do that?
Is .deb too mainstream?
>>
>>61305301
Yeah. I love openpepe. Use leap install some codecs and your gpu driver and your set.
>>
I don't know?
>>
>>61305301

yeah go natural progression
>>
>>61306308
what's good about openSUSE?
I tried to use it but it felt slow and bloated.
>>
>>61305301
I used to use this distro few years ago and it was quite nice back then, how is it today?
I like their mascot
>>
>>61305301
>Should I ditch Debian
yes
>for openSUSE
no
>>
>>61306361

Best KDE integration.
You get thumbnails in your browser without work.
>>
>>61306392
Then what?
>>
>>61305301
your next step should be gentoo
>>
>>61305301
Yes
>>
>>61306361

Its people like you who run SUSE on potato 90s hardware, windows on top spec machines and then compare the two.
>>
>>61306308
>install some codecs
if i install mpv from their repos won't it come with all the codecs needed?
>>
>>61306719
Even with barebones install It's slower than any other distro that I've tried.
I like my system to be snappy, like Solus. There is just no reason to choose less optimized distro.
>>
>>61306719
Even on good hardware, SUSE runs like total shit compared to just about any other mainstream distro out there. It's bloated trash.
>>
>>61305301
No, it's a stupid idea to migrate to a distribution with less package support, unless you have other concerns like server work. If anything, a desktop should be using Ubuntu, no fiddling with PPA's in Debian everytime you install exclusives.
>>
>>61307056
Yep. Ubuntu is the best choice for desktop distro.
Fedora or openSUSE are good if you work with Red Hat or SUSE.
>>
Yes. OpenSUSE or Fedora.
>>
>>61306308
>>61306741

i tried on a virtual machine and MPV simply doesn't play videos, VLC does it work tough
>>
Easier to turn unneeded services off than install/get them running. I used suse for a stretch and kept a webpage bookmarked that listed all the running daemons and which ones were safe to disable.
>>
>>61306741
>>61307476
Some codecs are patent-encumbered and can't legally be distributed with openSUSE.
Add the unofficial packman repo and install gstreamer-plugins-ugly.

Void
>>
>>61307476
>I tried shit in virtual machine
Terrible way of judging OSs and software
>>
>>61306741
only free codecs, if u want mainstream codecs u must install ffmpeg from packman.
>>
>>61306977
Did you do the netinstall or the full bloatware dvd version?
>>
>installed tumbleweed+KDE cause muh rolling release
>is a bloated piece of shit and isn't bare minimum KDE
>>
>>61307834
dumbass probably installed the full ISO with Gnome and KDE
>>
>>61307056
Installed kubuntu, hibernation didnt work even with tux on ice. Wasted so much time fixing shit. Back to openpepe, leap just werks.

>>
>>61307854
Tumbleweed + nvidia nonfree is a nightmare even with kms. Use Leap.
>>
>>61307889
but what about if i want to use new software? i can? for example wine staging, discord ( i know its shit but is a example )
>>
>>61308500
I use wine with playonlinux which has all the wine versions. Never installed discord, Id probably dump the tar in /opt or use someones opensuse repo if trustworthy (e.g. the maintainer of the software or something). E.g. for editors there are semi official repos with newer versions. You can always make snapper snapshots if you mess up and rollback. But outdated libs is generally a problem on non rolling release distros. There are always a couple bleeding edge applications you have to update manually (Does someone know a better way how to handle this) Atleast I never get breakages on updates.
