AOSP and AEX(AOSP Extended) are way better than Lineage in my opinion. Dunno why Lineage is so popular..

Also AOSP based ROMs use OMS using which you can use Substrarum

Who releases a decent AOSP vanilla ROM? I used to just build default releases for myself but got tired of constantly having to patch and repo sync gigs of shit from AOSP.

Yes, I used to repo sync a Nexus branch and build my own releases but surely there exists a minimalist project that does that.

I know Google has default pre-built ROMS they offer for Nexus but they come laced with Gboard and other aids

MIUI wasn't even that bad, it's actually the first skin I kinda liked but nothing beats stock for me, it just seems to work better for me. Notifications on MIUI8 though are horseshit compared to stock Nougat and on my 2GB Redmi Note 3 Pro it just kills apps too aggressively, RR seems to multitask so much better

Lineageos is usually the best option, but it depends a lot on the maintainer your device got. I'm using Carbon Rom because I own a Oneplus 3T used by a big part of their devs

They compile it from source. It's pretty muh stock Android with a few minor under the hood tweaks, optimizations, and security fixes, just without any Google services. The point of this Android distro is to give you a bare bones system and let you install anything you want while providing a smooth and reliable update system. That's why /g/ likes it. It's about as much control as you can possibly get on a mobile device.
