Ask questions, get advise, discuss Uni related topics.

I'll start:

First year CS student here. I've got 2 weeks left for my semester break.

This semester I'll be taking:
>OOP
>Data Management
>Network Routing Principals
>Technical Software Development

Any prep ideas?
>>
>>61302177
Cont.

Currently majoring in be cyber security, got a CCNA for free as it was integrated in my networks and switching unit. Hoping to get into network architecture, so I'll likely attempt the higher end Cisco certs over the summer break.

At my uni we do 4 units per semester. OOP is an elective. Data is core. The other two are apart of my cyber security major.

I'm an aus fag if that helps.

Can be hard going but quite fun at the same time.
Was on the fence about taking CS but decided that since EE covers some programming, I could become a programmer with EE but couldn't become an engineer with CS.
>>
>>61305291
You mean the drop-out major for people who were too stupid to make it in CS? Which is already a drop-out major for people who were too stupid to make it in math/physics/engineering
>>

Ayy lmao, ill be starting my cs degree at Swinburne next semester, most likely network design/cybersecurity double major. Have you seen they added a new "Internet of Things" major? Thoughts?
>>
>>61305714
Nah I didn't realize. I'd recommend networking and security any day of the week. Pretty happy with swinburne so far. I'm currently studying Comp Sci (cyber security) and Law atm. I got an 87 atar meme so I couldn't go to Monash. But their comp sci department is fucking terrible so idk if I even want to transfer anymore.

I've been told that Swinburne is very disorganized. But I do like Swinburne for its options in majors/minors etc

engineering is memed pretty hard for some reason, it isn't really that hard. I'd argue that the hardest path is probably pre-med -> med school because those fucks have to basically sit around memorizing huge lists of garbage and studying stuff they hate deep down. My engineering friends have tons of free time, my friends doing med track oscillate between being high on adderall and suicidal depression.

>Do car mechanics in Germany have courses in fluid dynamics as well?
If they study Mechatronics at an university and head to work as a car mechanic at a big company like Volkswagen for example, they will probably pick fluid dynamics as one of their optional classes
In comparation to US colleges, european universities are more sophisticated
>>
>>61306474
I'm not an americunt. I live in a neighboring country to yours. But I see you have autism, which must be nice, since you managed to somehow completely miss the point.
>>
Here's a question for you lads:
I graduated from chemical engineering in december and am still looking for jobs. I want to move towards programming because there are much more jobs for it in my country.

Do I actually need a CS degree to git a job, or can I do online courses + intern work and then expect to get a job reasonably easily (or at least easier than I'm finding it now)?
>>
>>61306620
Who fucking knows? It depends entirely on where you live. A bachelor's degree in anything is worth jack fucking shit where I live for instance. It's really more of a formality than anything else here.
>>
>>61306675

>>

What should I expect?
>>

>>

why? you don't even know the content of the class. i had a oop class which taught how different languages implemented inheritance, how dispatching is implemented, compared oop implementations in different languages (eiffel, smalltalk, common lisp, ...), lots of type theory, oo in fp in detail, etc
>>
>>61306289
>Pre-med to med is hard
Getting to med school is hard but pre-med is fucking easy. You fill your course with biology courses that's nothing more than learning vocab words. Chemistry is only the brainy course since physics is rarely required

The people too stupid to get into med school never do research and are too busy posting on facebook on how they are going to be doctors rather than study their vocab words
>>
>>61306289
If you want to go to med school and aren't a retard nowadays, you don't major in pre-med. They actually have some of the lowest med school acceptance rates now, since biomedical engineering took over as the "smart kid pre-med"
>>
>>61302177

The number is 32,875

If 32 in binary is 10000
If 875 in binary is 1101101011

The binary representation of 32,875 would be 10000,1101101011

But how the representation of 32,875 in 32-bit IEEE 754 is:
0 10000100 00000111000000000000000

>0
The sign 0 for positive

>10000100
Exponent 5+127 = 132

>00000111000000000000000
[1].00000111000000000000000, in brackets the hidden bit that means

1.000000111x2^5(binary) is equal 32,875(decimal)

To make it simple

100000.111(binary) is equal to 32,875(decimal)

which is not
>10000,1101101011

The first part 100000(binary) is 32(decimal)
How do you go from 0,875(decimal) to 0,111(binary) and not actually 1101101011(Number 875 in binary)?
>>
I'm about to finish my Bsc in Computer and Network technology; done lots of Networking, security and OS stuff as well as some OOP and web design modules. Youtube has a shit ton of tutorials, if the way your tutor explains something doesnt sink in, try them.

Turn up to everything if you can.

If you get the opportunity to do any Cisco stuff (lots of uni tutors are also Cisco certified tutors and can offer it for free it seems) take it. The materials and software you get on netacad are useful.

You'll do the following core CS units in first semester at swinburne, here's my experience:

>Web Apps
Very simple content wise: html, css, php, JavaScript, sql. Most of your grade hinges on the Assignment's which are long and feature somewhat confusing instructions. Read over the criteria a few times before you submit. Examination and in class tests are quite easy once you learn everything. An easy HD if you have good time management and don't fuck up the assignments.

>Networks & Switching
Pay attention during lectures, they're not recorded and the learning material is intentionally vague. It's structured more like a second year subject, it had a fail rate of 36% this year. Luckily, the unit is managed and taught exceptionally well. Jason is a fucking beast lecturer, he's helped Cisco develop their higher education courses. Hardest part is the skills exam (practical examination of the content you learn), practice for it in packet tracer and you'll be fine.

>Intro to Programming
It's a portfolio subject, in which you'll select the grade you're attempting for, and do the appropriate tasks to attain it. You'll mostly write in Pascal (good learner language with easy syntax) and C (aids syntax). It's helps to stay ahead of the curve so you're not caught writing your HD assignment during swotvac.

>Algorithms
This subject is also pretty easy; complete all the labs and read the lecture slides and you'll be fine. The week 11-12 probability component is somewhat difficult though.

>>61306046
In some aspects, classes are usually released late so it's difficult to build a good timetable. Other than that, the only disorganization I've experienced are a few mics running out of battery mid lecture and 2 mistakes on the Algorithms exam paper.

It depends on the unit convener. Web, Networks & Programming were very well managed. Algorithms underwent massive changes so it was a tad fucky at stages. Should be better for you though.

>How do you go from 0,875(decimal) to 0,111(binary) and not actually 1101101011(Number 875 in binary)?
That's because thats not how the fraction is interpretated in IEEE
The first digit after the comma is 2 to the power of -1 which is a half (0,5)
The second digit is 2 to the power of -2 which is a quarter (0,25)
And the third is 2 to the power of an eights (0,125)
Sum them up and you get 0,875

Are your algebra skills good? Brush up on that. Basic trig, too.

Just read the textbook, and DO THE PRACTICE PROBLEMS/ASSIGNMENTS. It's that simple.

Similarly, for your programming classes, you have to code. The people the fail are the ones that never practice, and think understanding the lecture slide is good enough.

I'm going to be brutally honest with you. If you think OOP is nothing, then you do not have any tech related jobs. OOP is a necessity for anything related to programming and not being a fedora wearing web dev neet. I work on server side infrastructure for a living and everything on our side is done in OOP. Attempting to do it by any other means is an inefficient data store nightmare of massive proportions. Now please tell me how you're going to properly and efficiently index an entire data store with anything but OOP. How are you going to manage client accounts? How are you going to make it structured, efficient, and not redundant? How on earth will you do it anon?

Oh wait. You're a hipster wanna be programmer with no real world experience. OOP dominates the entire industry anon, remember that.

tfw no difficult subjects in the first year, no programming taught in the first year and get to learn about (((business systems, hci, and """""""software engineering""""""""(no software engineering concepts are actually taught, it's just related to project development)))) instead.

They're only doing this because I got to a degree mill, basic programming principles taught in the first year caused too many students to drop out in the past, so in an effort to keep then in and milk them for as much money as possible they teach us vaguely related subjects.

How long were you in for, and which parts did you find especially hard? Any specific points/tips you would give your past self if you could?
>>
>>61317428
Honestly, I was really over thinking the discrete math stuff. I had been warming up for the course by reading up on lots of number theory, but neglecting to practice writing proofs. The course was heavily based on writing proofs, and no matter what I wrote down that made sense to me, the tutor was like "that's not a real proof", and it was like pulling teeth to get him to tell me what it is he really wants to see. Communication break down, and every time I thought I did okay on an assignment I was marked even less than the previous one.

The database one has to be a mistake. I'm going in this week because I think they mixed up my exam paper with something else, I was acing all of the assignments (obviously, since database admin is part of my job, and the course was one of those that are pretty easy for people who have an intro, but hopeless for those who have never seen the stuff before).
