ITT : updating old ass desktops.
I made a mid-level desktop back in 2009. It sat in storage for 8 years. When it came out, I realized it was now a piece of shit.
I need to update it to be a mid-tier 2017 machine, but I don't know what I can keep / scrap / update.
Is any of this salvageable, or should I just start over?
Here are the specs of the original machine:
COOLER MASTER Centurion 5 CAC-T05-UW Black Aluminum Bezel , SECC Chassis ATX Mid Tower Computer Case
ASUS M4A78-E AM3/AM2+ AMD 790GX HDMI ATX AMD Motherboard
SAPPHIRE Radeon HD 4850 DirectX 10.1 100258-1GHDMI 1GB 256-Bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFireX Support Video Card
COOLER MASTER Silent Pro M700 RS-700-AMBA-D3 700W ATX12V V2.3 SLI Certified CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS BRONZE Certified Modular Active PFC Power Supply
AMD Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition Deneb Quad-Core 3.2 GHz Socket AM3 125W HDZ955FBGIBOX Processor
OCZ Blade Series 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Desktop Memory Model OCZ2B800C44GK
Western Digital Black WD6401AALS 640GB 7200 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive
Sony Optiarc DVD Burner with LightScribe Black SATA Model AD-7241S-0B LightScribe Support
Didn't even read the specs but I can tell you that it's worth about 5% original value now. Rip out the hdd, chuck everything else.
Alternatively run windows 7 on it and just keep it as a facebook machine.
So what about case and power supply? Can these be saved? 700W seems sufficient but are there other specs that might prohibit this from working with a new mobo etc.

Ask in the /pcbg/ thread
I would salvage the HDD , DVD n maybe PSU. To save more money reuse case. Upgrade all else: cpu/mobo/ram. Yw.
