Do you think it would be wise to trade up to an Omega Seamaster QUARTZ?

Trade value of about $900-1k USD. I think they go for around $1200? I'm in Aus so there's usually a slight premium on top.

I would be trading a microbrand shitter and using funds from sales of another microbrand shitter and a steinhart shitter.

Worth it or no?

How do date and moon phase complications work
>>
>>61283254
They're both affixed directly to the gear train, as would a second, minute, and hour hand, rotating at a slightly slower rate.
>>
>>61282652
Some Accutrons were certified for use on American railroads
>>
>>61282652
Some anon posted one here.
>>
>>61283287
So it rotates at half the speed of the hour hand i would assume? Is that correct?
>>
>>61283380
>>61283382
Nice. I've heard there is a lot of horological history in regards to american railroads and I should learn more about it. Are these models more expensive?
>>
>>61283404
Yes.
>>
>>61283404
This is not the whole story. Moonphase are affixed directly to the geartrain yes and rotate around (1/24)*(1/29.5) the speed of the hour hand.

Most date complications do not turn smoothly all day, but jump at midnight. They typically use a sawtooth wheel that jumps ahead when the time reaches midnight.

>>61283404
If you're talking about day/night indicators, which are not moonphase, then yes, they just rotate at half the speed of the hour hand. They're basically just 24-hour dials, but with a sun and moon disk instead of a hand.
>>
>>61283420
Oh right there is a .5 in there.

Yeah I've disassembled a slavshit movement because I wanted to learn how the date jumped. Having a hard time getting it together again but I'm learning.

Was there functional purpose to moonphases back in the day?
>>
>>61283459
To tell when the werewolves would be out.

No, of course not. I suppose you could make an argument about when it'll be bright enough to see at night or when a good time for stargazing is.

Pretty sure most of the reason is astrological. That being said there are for sure reasons to be aware of the current moonphase.
>>
>>61283566
Like what. In this day and age at least.
>>
>>61283427
If that is a quartz watch its fucking laughable. Look how misaligned the second hand is. If it was mechanical it could be mid second but if it's quartz it should always be aligned to the second. SAD!
>>
>>61283566
Sure, I suppose tides make sense
>>
>>61283689
The original question was about "back in the day." That being said, my gif is an answer your question. Knowing the moonphase, and what it will be soon will tell you about neap and spring tides.

If you really want a skeleton under 1k, this isn't a bad one. It has decent legibility. It's basically a step up from something like a fossil skeleton. Fake American branding aside, Hamilton is a decent way to get cheap access to cheap eta movements. Skeleton dials aren't my style but if you want one you could do a lot worse here.

>>
>>61290195
tell me about the last technology revolution in watch industry, it's like about twenty years ago?
>>
>>61290333
Its constantly evolving. Mostly in materials sciences and precision machining.
>>
>>61290333
The latest major development was probably the widespread adoption of silicone in escapement components (springs, escape wheels, etc). The minituarization of fusee and chain mechanisms is also fairly recent. On the case side, you have all-sapphire cases that are pretty new (though they look pretty ugly to me to be honest, I can't rent they're new tech).

On the up and coming side of things, MEMS is getting a lot of talk - Seiko and timex at least are both working on it. Csac atomic watches have also started appearing, although still too big to really be wristwatches. Personally I'd love to see some innovation in terms of oils and bearings that could extend service intervals, though I haven't heard of anything like that.

Firstly it's lume, unless it has a machine for weaving cloth on it. Secondly it's not a dress watch, it's a dressy sport watch. Same as the Datejust etc. Thirdly it's an awesome watch and the bracelet problem can be solved by putting it on a leather strap.

You're going to get nailed whenever you want a vintage watch serviced, it's a fact of life. Omega doesn't just hand out spare parts to anyone who asks, either. Make sure the guy is legit and knows what he's doing, if you're going to pay a bunch of money at least make sure it's someone who will do a good job.

The super high-end manufacturers don't really build for durability, they focus on other things like complications or very fine finishing. If you're thinking of a watch with complications then definitely don't go too long between servicing. I think around 10 years is a pretty long service interval, I'm not sure I would try to go any longer especially with something really expensive that few people can work on.

What's the big deal about G-shock watches?
I understand the appeal in the 80s and 90s, but come on...
If you want a rugged watch, there are better looking ones.
If you like the style, then you really need to consider how much of a dweeb that watch and your cargo shorts make you look. You're probably also an inceleb cuck.

I do own the watch yes. Don't get me wrong it's not as bad as the SKX jubilee, but compared to the quality of the rest of the watch it's a bit lacking imho.

There is micro adjustment, I said virtually none as there is only 1 adjustment hole.

>>
>>61301798
There are two hole but only 1 extra hole. So you can only adjust by 1 hole smaller.

To be honest it doesn't bother me as I have it on leather but it is a negative point. Overall the watch is excellent value for money and with a different clasp would be even better.

I may just have been spoiled bu how good my Strapcode bracelets are, I might get their SARB super jubilee when it's released.

You find north using the hour hand and the sun, and manually rotate the inner bezel.
>>
>>61302296
Looks like the stupidest idea since it can be done without this bezel
>>
>>61301950
Having more than 1 extra hole for microadjustment is just redundant, just take a link out
>>
>>61302364
Having 2 holes means you can adjust by half a link. It's a useful feature I think.
>>
>>61302354
If you did this without a compass bezel and needed the slightest bit of precision, you'd have to draw the compass yourself.

I could imagine being in an airplane and using the watch as a last resort in case all instruments fail, since you can keep your bearing by slightly moving the watch now and then to adjust for the position of the sun.

But yes, it's pretty useless.

I'd much prefer it if it had a slide rule bezel, and it actually rotated by turning the bezel instead of that crown. Having this knurling on a fixed bezel is kind of dumb.

Still, this is an amazing-looking watch.

Jesus, try using your head sometime. 1 hole means you're able to adjust by half of the link. By removing a link you're adjusting 1 full link (shocking!). If you'd have 2 spare holes for microadjustments you'd be able to adjust by 1/3 of a link. That's about 1/5 of a link less than half. Now if you really need that precision, you might as well complain that leather straps dont have extra holes in between holes.
>>
>>61302902

Accutron is not quartz but is a cool watch. I would also recommend looking at the esa9162 models (longines ultrasonic, Omega f300, Omega speeewonic, Tissot tissonic, etc) as they are more durable.
Citizen astrodea/Accurist celestial for a separate sidereal time gear train
Seiko dolce (thermocompensated quartz)

Bulova precisionist (high beat quartz)

Why the fuck does Patek use quick springbars?
>>

Why not? Makes it easy to swap between your $1,000 elephant foreskin leather strap for everyday use and your $100,000 white rhinoceros eyelid leather for special occasions.

No, it's worthless. Those movements are like a dollar in bulk.

It's some kind of century old regulation that you have to write the exact number of jewels on the movement, even if no one expect any jewels in these kinds of movements in the first time.

Who the fucks bets this much on slavshit auctions? I just saw the price go up from 71 to 101, the watch is barely worth half that, what the fuck? I was hoping to pick up some cheap slavshit, but thank you very much, shove it up your fucking ass. I'd rather buy something better for that price

Maybe it's a case where the seller bids on it from a different account, but in any case, not worth it by a long shot

You mean to tell me Seiko used extra scratchable stainless steel for this watch?

Just stfu, dont try to blame your brothers retardation on Seiko.

I have a green alpinist, and after five years of office work it's pretty much covered in scratches too. Even a bit of a dent in the bezel.

My father would like to buy me a watch for my 20th birthday

He said it had to be something good, but I know literally nothing about timepieces

Ideally I'd like it to be something that has a stealth wealth factor as to not attract a commoner (so not one of the common Rolex's), but any guy that knows little something about watches will recognize and respect it.

No budget apparently
>>
>>61311328
Depends on what you're looking for as far as features go. Dress watch? Sporty? Chronograph? etc. That and if you look at vintage there are a ton of options.
>>
>>61311352
Hmm, I'd definitely like something that can be worn every day. Perhaps something minimal or clean looking.

I did a brief Google and dress watches seem my type
>>
>>61311328
Look deep Into watches for atleast a month or to, find your own grails/things you like about them and then make your choice. /g/ wont give you a good taste in watches.

Dress watches aren't something you'd normally wear every day.

If you take the time to research (so you don't get a franken or something), vintage constellations are nice.

I got pic related from my dad. It's a great watch, plebs don't recognize Rolexes anyway unless it's a Sub or a Datejust.

Look at Tudor maybe, or Sinn and Damasko, or Grand Seiko. Omega has some decent models and some dogshit, be careful. I don't see anything wrong with buying a new-ish watch used, but don't get something vintage and really old as your first and only watch especially if you don't know exactly what you're buying.

Don't buy a fucking TAG or a Breitling.

Audemars piguet royal oak

Very nice
>>
>>61311503
Audemars Piguet Royal Oak. It's a nice watch but the Royal Oak Offshore line has really ruined the design for me, the Offshores are the official diamond encrusted watch of rappers and oil sheikhs everywhere. It's also like $12k or more if I remember right so I hope daddy has deep pockets damn anon.

>stealth wealth

tasteless nouveau riche pleb

sureeeee, go royal oaks are everywhere like hot cookies as some entry level connaisseur tier

either underage or retarded enough to not know what you want looking for attention enabled if you really want to be stealth just get

>>61311557

this and again super mainstream but still with a touch
>>
>>61311940
>Rolex is flashy nouveau riche
>Literally the most recognizable Omega of the past half century is not
Are you ok? I probably see a hundred Speedmasters out on the street for every Explorer I see.
>>
>>61312047

The royal oak has become synonymous with an entry level watch into quality tier from a reputable brand in denominations that catered to every go getter on the spectrum and became so popular that it's an automatic association. This affected in ways APs image from too much popularity the point being not prioritized by revenue [as the boxster saved porsche for example] or recognizable but in the identity and craftsmanship projected, that being said there's nothing wrong with the royal oak it's a great watch so let everyone flock because it's reviewed and recommended.

If you see a hundred speedmasters then that's the point of being stealth because out of the hundred you won't notice the explorer wearing the speedmaster.
>>
>>61312199
I never said anything about Royal Oaks, I think those are awful the same way Cayennes and Macans are awful. I was talking about Rolex, and I'm not the guy who is looking to buy a watch.
>>
>>61311472
>>61312286

Yeah I didn't mean to offend you, your watch is v. nice it's just the watchmaker which is associated to it which is quite powerfully known but I'll agree with you that the explorer is exactly the gist and spirit of stealth, the choice of the maker, then the identity within the composition then the style to fit your own, super low key and timeless

This is the point of a watch at a certain level, it's not just like a toblerone you get from the convenience store when you can actually choose if you cared just a bit because the watch ends up wearing you if you know what I mean just like driving a cayenne or macan brands you and it's time, mechanics, dynamic.
