Why do people say things like "2GB of RAM isn't enough"?

I am using my phone only for messaging, listening to music and navigation. I am using an old Sony Xperia with 1GB of RAM and it works surprisingly well and it's snappy.
Now I want to get an LG Nexus 5 and saw those comments. Surely it can't be worse than my current Xperia phone, right? It can only get better?

Even a $100 phone will run Spotify and and Google maps decently.

>>61270464
Well it all depends on how you use your phone, also older versions of android are usually lighter on the memory usage.

I've got a tablet with 2gb ram and a phone with 3gb ram, both on stock android 7.0, and there's a noticeable difference in the amount of apps/browser tabs that they can keep in memory. If it was my phone that only had 2gb ram I'd find the constant reloading of apps and tabs incredibly frustrating, but the tablet is mainly for watching vidya so it doesn't matter that much.

So if you're using your phone just for basic phone stuff, 2gb ram is still fine, but if you want to do anything more than that (games/social media etc.) I'd really recommend 3gb ram minimum.

What would you suggest for someone who had a Moto X Style 2nd gen? The battery is so trash I have to use it at minimum brightness
Country: Australia
Carrier: Lebara
Features req.: Fast enough to run latest 3D games although I dont play any. Good Camera, Shouldn't get too slow when I install many apps
Size: Any big phone as long as it doesn't encroach on phablet territory

Or should I save up and just get an S8? Or wait for google's next phone? Should also have a good camera since I'm getting aesthetic (t-thanks /fit)

Essential DoA

That smartphone is just a flagship tier memephone, with literally nothing to differentiate it from the competition, and probably with some engineering flaws, pretty much like the OP5.

Nowadays I'm way more excited for new low-midrange products: processors trade computational power (which is overkill anyway) for low power consumption, meaning battery lasts longer, they don't have that stupid glass back, meaning they're waaay more durable, they're packed with stock android, and are much cheaper than flagships.

I mean, why should I even spend $700 on a flagship? What do they give you more than a 200~300 bucks phone?

can anyone recommend me a phone? I want to upgrade from a s3 which I've had since it came out.

The missus recently got a one plus 3 which I like a lot but it'd be too big for me. Ideally I wouldn't want the new phone to be much bigger than the s3.

requirements: upgrade in RAM/speed, good screen quality, not too big. Bonus if it can dual-sim. Budget/carrier not an issue.

I don't follow it so no idea. Maybe google name of the phone for rumors or browser gsmarena for speculations.
>>
>>61270461
HTC is the most stock phone you can get if you don't count Pixel, they've upgraded M9 up till Nougat on a 3 years old phone , so the 10 will probably last a while. Not the best camera but it's decent if you plan on taking pictures. And it got a good DAC for headphones.

Yes but it will still be good after the last upgrade and will hold on +1 year unless you really need the latest upgrade which usually has slow rollout on most devices you buy, took Nougat quite sometime after the release to finally show up on any upgradeable devices.

I've wondered the same.

The biggest drawbacks I see are being forced to use iTunes for some things and not as good of an access to the file system on iOS, but supposedly ios11 improves on that.

Another drawback is Google Drive integration. It's nowhere near as good on ios.

If the iPhone7s comes out this year with upped specs and they remove the button / add an under the screen finger print reader then I'm probably going to buy that.

I am so sick and tired of Android fragmentation.

Something of a curiosity question here, is there anything on android to get as good an integration with the phonebook and answer phone as in iphones?

Being able to see who has left a phone message without having to go through the shitty "call 123, 9 message, slowly present all 9, 8 of which are empty noise and pocket dials, press 3 to delete" shit seems like a decent boon. Everyone seems to forget actual phone capabilities these days and seem to think the camera and video game functions are more important.

Which year is 2nd gen? I have a Pure 2015 and am sick & tired of using shitty custom ROMs and waiting for the official Nougat update. Lenovorola can suck a fuck.

Personally I'm considering getting a G5+ for a while until the Pixel 2 and iphone 8 come out, thereby lowering the prices of everything else and I can afford a real flagship.

Dunno about you but while the S8 is ((le pretty phone meme)), it's prohibitively expensive, and plus locked bootloader -_-

Country/Carrier:
US/T-Mobile
Size:
Doesn't matter, nothing excessively large though.
Storage:
64GB or 32 + SD Card Slot
Uses:
To do list, calling, texting, social media, etc. No games so I don't need a fantastic processor.
Other things:
I would like it to have good custom ROM support, mainly stable Lineage, or a good bloatfree stock ROM. Preferably also 3/4+ GB of RAM.
Budget:
$400, although I can stretch further if necessary.
>>
>>61274007
Literally every tech site on the internet is shitting on OP5, and probably justifiably.

I won't go into the cheating in benchmark/paying off camera review site/no stock at launch/support staff/speaker direction issues because they're aren't related to the phone hardware itself.

There are three deal breaking hardware issues:
- Jelly scrolling. You can check any of like 100+ videos out there. OP5 screen is mounted upside down. Why is that a problem? Because screens usually refresh from up to down. human reading direction is up to down. When these two are not the same, you notice refresh artifacts.
- Camera quality. OP3T has OIS. OP5 doesn't. And the downgrade in quality shows in benchmarks. OP3T was advertised as a flagship killer. It was. While OP5 was advertised as a phone with a good camera. It wasn't.
- It looks like iPhone 7. Appearance wise it's now on par with shit tons of chink iPhone copies out there.
>>
>>61274120
I saw a few reviews and all positive so kinda surprised here. I don't browse for reviews unless I'm planning to get a new phone so I don't really know trusted sites though. Camera and iPhone like design aren't much if a problem for me but damn, that jelly. Why don't those fuckers install the screen the normal way instead? I'm really close to getting that phone. What else you guys recommended in the same price range? I'm in Netherlands on T-Mobile mobile.
>>
>>61274171
>Why don't those fuckers install the screen the normal way instead?
Presumably they get one more port if they orient the screen this way.

>What else you guys recommended in the same price range?
If you still want a Oneplus people will tell you to get a used OP3T. But you should list your preferences (screen size, bezel/bezelless etc...)
>>
>>61271656

>>
>>61274233
Something around 5-5.5 inch, preferably smaller than G4+, was considering OP5 because it's thinner than G4+. Thin bezels are sexy and I like the buttons under the screen so I don't get a navbar. Expandable storage isn't a must of it's at least 64GB but I'd like something fast but not too expensive.

Which upcoming SD660 phone is best recommended, in terms of brand reliability and specs?

Any opinions on the Moto G5 plus?

I wanted to get the Moto Z Play to upgrade from my moto x play but the only thing preventing me was it not having an fm radio so I was excited when I read the specs on the moto g5 and g5+

I got it. It's a good phone and I have no real regrets. I didn't know that it wouldn't have a notification LED before I bought it, but it's worked out well enough.

Anything in particular you want to know about?

Anyone with a Nexus 6?
Mine is having issues lately, or well, since the last "update".
Some apps just like to freeze or bug, like not responding to some commands, being laggy as shit, or even sending the phone on a reboot. I notice this mostly with instagram and whatsapp.
Everything that uses the camera will bring the phone into a slowdown almost meltdown, not everytime but very often, especially google's own camera app.
For some reason the music player likes to randomly stop playing (jack connection is good).
Also, for some reason it doesn't like file transfers in windows (transferring to phone) I have to do it with a mac.

Anyway the rant is, did you guys upgrade, sidegrade, or found an easy fix? (I don't wind to load up custom roms because it's a work phone, if it's the phone's fault, company is fine, if it's mine because I worked on it, it's my fault and company will complain).

Just snappiness, battery life and what not vs moto x play, I would get the regular g5 but I want the plus for that little extra bump of spec upgrades.

With the moto x play 5.5 seems a little to big even with my big meaty hands.

How is this not the perfect phone? I currently use a Sony Experia Z1 and I've never had any issues but the backlight is faulty (flickers completely off most of the time) so I can barely see the screen and the touch screen fails in places too. Should I attempt a repair myself or just get a new phone?
>>
>>61276869
No
>>
>>61276831
I have had a Nexus 6 since launch, but for almost every point you made I would reply install a custom rom, but since that isn't an option, I would recommend a factory reset.

As for the random music player stopping, I sometimes get that when headphones are plugged in. The headphone jack on my phone has had a lot of insertions over the last 2-3 years though.

For file transfer I would suggest getting a proper micro USB cable (like Anker) and plugging it directly in your PC, not through some hub. I mostly do wireless transfers to and from my phone by using Airdroid.

>I don't wind to load up custom roms because it's a work phone, if it's the phone's fault, company is fine, if it's mine because I worked on it, it's my fault and company will complain
If they issue a new one and I keep this one I'll load something different.

>>61276950
Did the factory reset and it likes to bring up the issues again after a while, kinda as if it had memory leak (but isn't).
I barely use the jack though, that's the thing. But I guess I might have given it a tiny crack.
I do use a proper USB cable, the factory one and a third party one. Tried drivers, etc. It's just something I came to accept, it's maybe my pc since it works on the macbook.
Thanks though.

I CAN'T for the life of me decide which phone to get, the galaxy s8(exynos) or the oneplus 5.
where i live they both cost the same.
The ONLY thing stopping me from going for the s8 is rootability and custom ROMs (even though the exynos is rootable).
Is the screen, water resistance, superior camera, wireless charging and design of the s8 with the tradeoff? I CAN'T DECIDE!
convince me that one is better than the other.

>how is Oukitel K10000 Pro not the perfect phone
As someone who owns one I'll tell you what is wrong with it
>no front notification LED
>micro USB instead of USB C (eh, budget phones. Although my current phone uses mUSB too so I don't care about this)
>heavy as fuck (you get used to it)
>it's port is a bit deeper than regular USB ports so you'll need to use the cables bundled with the phone or trim your short ones
>Camera is crap (eh, budget phones)
>if you leave it in it's rubber cover it will heat up a lot when charging because it won't be able to dissipate heat (any device will do this so idk if it's an actual flaw)
>the phone doesn't smoothly fit the purse they ship it with, it's too tight
>stock theme is inconsistent. But you can change it with the "themes" app they bundle with the phone. This is the only "rogue" app on the device, everything else is stock Nougat Android.
>battery optimization isn't enabled by default. You must go into Power Management and enable Power Monitor yourself.
None of these matter to me personally and all this is expected on a budget phone. I bought it as a secondary phone for gaymin and as a replacement if my current phone dies. So far it's good.

>should I just fix my phone
I wouldn't invest a lot into an old device. You can sell it for parts and buy something newer.

So I guess the Moto G5+ it is then. The thing about it is that it doesn't have USB-C or even NFC, things common on phones I've seen. The SD625 processor is also mid-range, compared to the SD820 iirc

What's the best android I can get for like 100-200 bucks? I have a LG Escape 3 with cricket (min wage fag, is cheap nigga) as of now and I love it but I was wondering what shit is better than I have. I dont care what cell provider it'd be under. I would like to see all options
>>
>>61282929
The 625s biggest asset is that it's killer for battery life, it's pretty good at performing tasks and the GPU is decent
The 820 shreds through tasks, has a great GPU, is daydream capable when connected to a 1440p screen, but it's not the best on battery life
>>
>>61282963
I'd value performance over balance. If it can last a day (or 2) on full charge then it's good for me
>>
>>61282987
820 will last a day, not fully if you use the fuck out of it
625 with good battery (3,000mah and higher) will last about 2 days, or a full day and through sleep before needing a charge

If your a manchild who's worried about gaymes, get a 820 phone
>>
>>61283003
the question is, which (for the same cost as a G5+ would be)?
>>
>>61283044
Jesus Christ, if you have to play your favorite emulator weeb gaymes and stream your animu in 1440p, get the fucking G5
>>

The law firm was actively searching for anyone with a G5/V20 to come forward if they were having the same issues as G4/V10/5X

That was in March, it's July and there's been no new news
>>
>>61282912
As that contradicts what I've argued. Wouldn't the most sensible thing be to not actually buy phones associated with a large class action lawsuit? Applies to >>61283098 as well.

But the G5 and V20 have yet to be named as device in the class action suit officially, no one is recommending a 5X,G4, or V10

I'm going to buy the nokia 6 tomorrow and I'm worried they'll announce their new ones at the end of July or something

I just want a nice phone for $500 or less, where's my sd660 nokia 7

Depends, what are you looking to use your phone for?

For daily usage, the iPhone beats any Android.
>>
OK, so is there an alternative to the G5+ at the same price which has things like USB-C and NFC with a good processor, and ISN'T the LG G5?
>>
>>61283568

Nokia 8 will be under 500 wait for that
>>
>>61283677
I plan to use it for daily uses but mostly to listen to music, take pictures, text, and use it as a computer/for work until I get a PC
>>
>>61282577
LG G5 is your best bet.

yeah exactly, what if they announce the phones this month and then it's january before anyone in nonchink countries starts to get them

>>61283705
how in the world will it be under $500? every leak/detail I've seen puts it well over that, more like $700
>>
>>61283533
But it will be out in India for months before the US gets it, right? Do you see my point? Or am I wrong and it will be released in the US not long after?

>>
>>61283846
fug i wish they'd just announce them already

>>61283873
for the 835 version? that would be amazing, but I really doubt that since they're charging so much for the 430 nokia 6 when other phones in that range have a 625
>>
>>61283887

Nokia 6 on amazon is under 200 with ads and 230 without ads.

Oneplus is 500 so its not surprising if the nokia 8 is around the same amount.
>>
No budget, upgrading from an S4. Watch a lot of media and basic phone games. Listen to music through earbuds, write emails and such through my phone. Care about display and "usefulness" of phone, not so much about specs.

What should I upgrade to?
>>
>>61283978

S8, otherwise wait for the nokia 8 or maybe new sony

Avoid lg at all costs though
>>
Someone please make a strawpoll asking for general location of anons ITT: North America, Central/South America, India, China, etc. It really does matter here.

So my galaxy s3 is getting old recently.

Last year I was planning on getting the Moto G4 Plus but now they have the Moto G5 Plus.

Do you guys still suggest that as a budget and high performing phone? I don't use my phone that much, just to play games rarely and download a lot of pictures from 4chin hence why I need the 64GB one. And the 4GB RAM for some of the games that keep crashing on my current phone.

I heard that Amazon has this sale on the 10th? What do you think?
>>
>>61285234
Zuk Z2 is a great phone for the price if you don't mind the 5in size. It has sd 820 and 4gb RAM but costs about $180. 64gb standard storage.

Bought one for my gf that went from an iphone 5s to a laggy s5 and wanted to go back to apple, it ended up being the perfect phone for her and she's never bitched about lag.
>>
>>61285310
From Amazon or Ebay though? I don't know how much to trust the Chinese botnet.
>>
So how's Honor 9's ui and bloat? Thinking of getting one, won't be rooting at least until the warranty lasts.
>>
>>61285318
I used aliexpress + ebates for cashback for maximum jew.

The zuk z2 was released in India recently as the Lenovo Z2 Plus and the India ZUI ROM has no chinese at all or India apps, it's basically an English global ROM that comes with Google now launcher and gets OTA updates.

It's the cheapest sd 820 phone and everything else is pretty damn good too, even the camera isn't completely shit, better than my redmi note 3 pro.

Peck-typing the manufacturer's default included keyboard for the common peasant.

Slide typing on Gboard for the more distinguished gentleman.

But if you're a real geeky ass nigga, and can already swipe type like a madman, you HAVE to try out Keyboard 69 (the Android equivalent of the iphone version which is officially called Nintype).

Dual-swipe typing (you use both hands) is way faster and more fun. Takes less effort as well. The android version's literally still in alpha but I can't stop using it regardless.
