First to all, sorry for my English
I have my mac 128gb with only 20gb free, I'm a little worry about it. I use my laptop for web development, backend and front end. Almost half of my apps are already using 30gb of my 128gbs ( IntelliJ idea , webstorm, vsc , any point, etc )
I have an external drive WD 1TB. I've already investigated on internet about use and run apps on External drive , and yes that's possible . But my worry is about how this gonna impact my productivity. For example how fast is gonna run my IntelliJ idea with terminal process like maven and the same time my front end project like webstorm angular2 with another terminal process webpack , and smargit with git process and those process running from external hard drive.
Any experience or opinion are going to be helpfully ,

Why don't you test it yourself?
Technically your internal SSD is going to be years ahead of your USB 3.0 external hard drive in terms of read and write speeds, but with what you're doing I doubt it'll matter much.
If you're so concerned with speed get a thunderbolt external SSD, although you're going to pay a lot for that extra speed.
