notebookcheck says the 900px display on E6420 is brighter that the 768px on E6430, but I take identical resolution displays on both models should be about the same quality or identical

That's not the biggest deal to me. I'll do some closer comparison though since they hover around the same price often. I'll also look into the M4600 I mentioned earlier in the thread since I don't know if it's worth going out of the way for Precision over Latitude.

and afaik they don't differ with battery compatibilities and whitelist shit like **20-**30 thinkpads do. So go for the E6430 unless you find out there's something utterly wrong with it, but I haven't seen anything such mentioned in these threads ever at least. Check the archives yourself:
https://rbt.asia/g/search/text/E6430/

the M4600 is a good bit heavier, you wont be happy to carry it around daily

>>61265854
Oh good point on the weight, I didn't realize that. I'll check the archives for the E6430

What's the battery life on the X220 like? I've heard that it'll drain in around 4 hours and that's going to be a problem for me, but it seems like ta good option overall for what I want to use it for (Web browsing, text editing, 720p anime, etc) , since I have a desktop already. My only real concerns are the battery life and the screen quality.

I have a question about 1920x1080 resolution on 14" laptops such as T440*, T450s, E74*0, etc. At native resolution with no scaling, is text hard to read? I would install GNU/Linux and I've heard that scaling there is tricky.
>>
>>61266032
Yeah I saw that, that's not possible for me. I also had the 8460p under consideration from HP. Battery life of that unit is a major turnoff compared to the Dell Latitude though.

Apparently the E6430 has a fan issue of it kicking on but not shutting off. E6420 apparently does not have it. No word of the E6440 either.

Maybe it's preventable with config

How long before the X220/T420/W520 becomes obsolete?

New websites are very resource intensive other web sites, New hardware standards like USB-C and Thunderbolt 3 are being implemented, New technologies that uses hardware acceleration like X265 and VP9 are not supported, new software that utilize new hardware requirement and more resources.

Is it the end for the older thinkpads?
>>
>>61269898
Not really, no.
>>
>>61267166

I'd just like to interject for moment. What you're refering to as The Programming Penguin, is in fact, Tux/Programming Penguin, or as I've recently taken to calling it, Tux plus Programming Penguin. Programming Penguin is not a mascot unto itself, but rather another original character of a fully functioning Tux system made useful by the Tux likeliness, wing utilities and vital penguin components comprising a full mascot as defined by Torvalds.

Many computer users see a modified version of the Tux character every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of Tux which is widely used today is often called Programming Penguin, and many of its users are not aware that it is basically tTux, developed by the Tux Project.

There really is a Programming Penguin, and these people are viewing it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Programming Penguin is the nickname: the name in the system that allocates the viewer's attention to the character they view. The nickname is an essential part of a mascot, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete original character. Programming Penguin is normally used in combination with the Tux mascot: the whole system is basically Tux with Programming Penguin added, or Tux/Programming Penguin. All the so-called Programming Penguin characters are really OCs of Tux/Programming Penguin!

>>61269898
Probably when 16GB of ram isn't enough. Im pretty sure the common i5 2520 or whatever it is thats in most x220/t420 can play 4k x265 video as long as it has sane settings. as for hardware acceleration for the foreseeable future it will only be an issue with battery saving
>>
>>61269205
Another tip is that don't buy a x1 with a 3rd gen processor as well. They're just not efficient enough.

Basically avoid anything that doesn't have a 5th gen processor or newer
>>
>>61269918
Shitposting machine doesn't count.
>>61269898
Probably when applications start to use more than 8 GB of RAM, and since DDR3 is no longer in production I suggest you horde RAM.
>New hardware standards
There will always be adapters.
>>61269938
>can play 4k x265 video
"can" doesn't mean it play it well, i5 struggles with 1080p x264 with SW decoder, with low settings.
Battery life isn't an issue as high CPU temp.

In the end xx20 is only good for 3-5 more years before the cost of upgrading exceed the cost of refurbished xx30/xx40, which should be good for 5-8 more years unless significant new hardware breakthrough was made.

On a business oriented laptop you're going to be getting either an integrated GPU, or a lower end GPU, or something like a Quadro, so you won't be playing modern games anyway.

Odds are you'll be playing mostly indieshit, and they usually have Linux clients anyway. Between that and DOSBox you'll never want for games to play.

Alternately, just dualboot.
>>
>>61270948
Yeah everything i want to play is reasonable, dwarf fortress and rimworld being exapmles.

Is buying a X220 for around $200 with a charger, 8GB of RAM and a 250gb SSD worth it if I just want a way to browse the web and watch anime in places without access to constant electricity? I've got a t420 with a 2520m just repasted it and hit 93c on normal prime 95 what sort of results do you guys get.
>>
>>61274479
6410 looks better than the 6420
>>
>>61273848
that's a pretty good price for the X220 since it already has 8gb ram and 250gb ssd, you might need a new battery though which is like $60~ for a new genuine 9-cell

but I would look for an X230 instead because USB 3.0 and graphics performance, meaning it'll last a bit longer
>>
>>61270780
yeah, I looked at video for t420 lcd replacement, looks pretty easy to get the screen out but it has all the backing to it not sure how easy that is to get to. I may just leave it to decompose if that's even possible.

I think the reason my CPU is getting so hot is because I have the single heatpipe cooler. I am less concerned now.
>>
>>61274321
I could just use it in combination with a monitor but that would be kind of annoying. If the T420 has a 1600x900 screen I'll get it since it can be used for 720p video.
>>61274504
I'm not super concerned with longevity, I just need it to last a year or two with light use.
>>
t420 just came in the male... looks great, bad screen but I'll get over it.

So, I'm doing baby-steps by myself: that's the hard-disk user password, that can be changed or removed from Bios. BUT, if you want it removed, you need a hard-disk MASTER password (which is different and is not 'admin' either).
New question: what is the default hard-disk master password for a X230 Thinkpad?

Let me rephrase that: I can boot and use the laptop normally, I just want to remove the user hard-disk password (which I know what is), but the Bios asks me for a master hard-disk password when I try to do that (which I don't know what is, but I suppose it's set-up by default). Anyone else care to help with this?
>>
>>61275852
You are fucked. That's all I know about. Buy a new HDD.
Have you ever heard of SVP?
>>
>>61275674
there is no such thing as default master password. It's a functionality of HDD itself, not laptop.
I think master password can be removed by using secure erase with user password, but I could be wrong.
Just ask the seller.

My x230 seems to be throttling at 75 degrees when I play some simple vidya. Yeah I know it's not for vidya, but it's nothing intensive. The cpu clocks down to sub 2ghz and I can feel the fps dropping quite significantly. Should it throttle at those speeds ?
>>
Looking at the T470

How the fuck do these scumbag companies still get away with charging $400 for a 256GB SSD and a 1yr warranty standard? Holy shit, I don't want to buy a laptop anymore

you "completely erase hard-disk" by using secure erase option. It can be done with hdparm or manufacturer's software I think.

>>61276538
That's the kind of answer I was expecting from this general.
Thank you.
>>
>>61276508
Because they aim it at the IT departments of big companies who don't mind paying $400 for a 256GB SSD. Quite often, departments will have to use their entire budget in order to get an increase in their budgets.

This means they'll spend money on crap like a P71 for a secretary who only has to write 3 emails a day so they can spend money extra money they get next year on upgrading their servers

Fortunately in Europe the warranty on Thinkpads is actually quite good. On the T and X series at least, the base warranty is a 3 year on-site warranty.

I've got an i5 sticker on my T470
Still not sure if I should take it off or not

Yes, I remove the windows sticker though.
And in hindsight removing the stickers is a very stupid idea, it lower the price if you want to sell the thinkpad and it leaves a mark that can't be removed easily.

Remove it.
>>61290556
Why? What kind of autist would fret about not having any stickers? If you're selling it you'd probably include screencaps of your bios anyway
>>
How many of you buy generic battery brands as replacements for your thinkapds?
>>
>>61290544
Remove it and install gentoo.
>>

it only leaves a mark if you left the sticker on there too long to begin with
