If you want help:
>Assemble your parts list
https://pcpartpicker.com/
>State the budget for your build (and country if not the USA)
>List games/software you use often, as well as your monitor resolution + refresh rate
>Clarify your goal for build improvements: lower price or improved specs?
How to assemble a PC, select components & more (kind of outdated)
https://wiki.installgentoo.com/index.php?title=Build_a_PC

CPUs:
No i5 unless discounted
>G4560/G4600 - Budget builds (<$500)
>R5 1400 - Cheapest quad core you can get (Ryzen 3 soon)
>R5 1500x - Good but up to 1600 if you can
>R5 1600 - Best value for higher fps gaming / mixed usage; 1600x if you want higher stock clocks
>i7 7700k - 144hz only
>R7/Used Xeon/Threadripper - Compute/Multitask/VM/mixed use; Not for just gaming

GPUs:
Coin miners have driven price up and stock down, waiting to buy a GPU might be wiser
>Integrated CPU Graphics - Desktop stuff and very light games
>GTX 1050(Ti) - Lower end budget cards, drop settings on newer games, RX560 beaten by both
>RX570 - 1080p@60~hz maxed, running most maxed older games at 100~Hz
>RX580 and GTX1060 6GB - 1080p@80hz maxed, 1440p@60hz at lower settings; RX580 better in newer games
>GTX 1070 - 1080p@130hz /1440p@60hz at high
>GTX 1080 - 1080p@144hz / 1440p@60hz maxed, 4k@60hz in a few games; Probably the highest end card you need for 1080p/1440p
>GTX 1080Ti - 1440p@144hz and 4k@60hz maxed/high in many games

RAM:
>Check your Mobo QVL before buying any RAM
>Ryzen CPUs benefits a lot from high speed RAM

General:
ALWAYS LOOK AT PRODUCT REVIEWS!
Always consider an SSD. Try buying a large SSD for what you'd pay for your SSD+HDD combined, and add a HDD later
NVMe SSDs aren't for a faster OS boot, they're for productivity/scratch disk/VMs. NVMe and M.2 are not the same thing, M.2 is a form factor.
The Ryzen lineup comes with surprisingly good stock coolers. consider using them over any <$30 cooler.

I recently purchased pic related. From what I've read, it works best with a R5 1600, but I was wondering if I could bump up to an R7 instead. I guess it would be compatible either way with everything I have, but I don't know about performance. Anyone have any experience with Gigabyte motherboards?
>>
>>61260816
https://pcpartpicker.com/list/8TJfBP

I don't understand exactly why I'd need a large SSD.
I have previous HDDs to reuse, and would eventually get a dedicated large capacity second drive.

Another question I have is the cabling. While I do have SATA cables, do they come included?
Are they something stupid like USB where older is slower or can I use what I already have?
>>
>>61260887
>it works best with a R5 1600
It doesn't work best with anything, it works well period
Yeah, it'll handle an overclocked R7 if you want
>>
Could someone post some home media servers/seedbox examples? I have no clue if I need a lot of power or what.

Give me some good silent cases, please.

Is there anything I could change on this to get the same performance for less? I have an ssd from my old pc that I will be taking.

Welp.

How important is a rear exhaust magnetic dust filter?
This will primarily sit in a desk cubby with an open back, but still close to the wall.

Phantecks Luxe Tempered comes to mind, just don't turn on the leds if don't want them. They're pretty subdued anyway
>>
I was planning to get a Noctua U12s. Is there a better single tower cooler? U14 is too big for my case or I'd get that.
Is it worth jumping to a D15s for a 4.0 overclock on a 1600?
>>
>>61261335
No it has to run this on oil not electricity.

what would be a better mb for a r5 1600? I was going to buy the

MSI - B350M GAMING PRO Micro ATX AM4

Or possibly the GIGABYTE GA-AX370-Gaming mb.

I'm unsure of the difference it would make for a gaming build.

my build: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/qLcThq
>>
>>61261984
Leveraging off your question since your build includes a question I have.

Wiki and other sources claim most bundled coolers (like the R5 1600) come with thermal paste pre-applied. Is it worth the bit to use something else?
>>
>>61262035
Might reduce temps a bit but not dramatically. I always apply my own but I have a big syringe of Gelid GC Extreme just itching to be used so...
>>
>>61261984
Why are you comparing an ATX and μATX board with differing chipsets? I'll just assume you're willing to go ATX with the X370 chipset. Your parts list also has the MSI BAZOOKA and not the GAMING PRO.

You probably should look at the MSI X370 GAMING PRO CARBON or the GIGABYTE GA-AX370-Gaming K5. Based on the reviews I would lean MSI but I have little to base that on, maybe others can chime in.
>>
>>61261984
that's a massive case for a micro atx board lmao
>>
>>61261984
Your build seems imbalanced to me, what exactly is your budget? Also please don't buy a 1070 for $500 that is fucking highway robbery I swear to god
>>
>>61261760
Now that looks fun
>>
>>61262582
Really? Imbalanced in what sense? I bought the GTX 1070 when it was $400, I'm just getting the other parts now.
>>
I'm going from an i5-4460 to an i5-4570 or so for free.
Will it last me one more year than an i5-4460 would? I don't think that's much of a difference.
>>
>>61262757
Well that's good. I say that because you have a micro atx board in a full tower case with a CPU that barely costs more than the case. It's odd.. typically you would proportion things differently with more given to the CPU and board and a bit less on the case. Unless you're planning to switch the CPU/board out soon or something then it makes sense.
>>
>>61261248
Dust filters arent needed on exhaust fans
>>
If I can buy the GTX 1080 for $600 should I just make the jump to the Ti for $100 more? I have room in my budget and just want to make sure my vidya is as smooth as possible but I've never experienced running at 144hz.
>>

>>
>>61262814
At 1920x1080 I doubt it would even matter for most games. At 1440 or 21:9 1080 or higher it would definitely be preferable.

How can I adapt my Evo 212 for a Ryzen?
>>
>>61261291
The MSI B350M Mortar. It has the best VRM setup. Don't be fooled by all those chokes on the ASCock board, it's only a 3-phase CPU VRM. They just used twice the number of necessary components for each phase to make it LOOK like a 6-phase setup to the naked eye. In reality it's only 3+3 (not even doubled).

You still need an AM3 backplate though because the CH6 comes with the AM4 backplate, unless the Evo 212 comes with one then you're good.

So when do the next models of GPUs (vega and the next nvidia, whatever it's called) come out?

It looks like mining isn't magically going to disappear in the next few weeks, so maybe I'll just wait since everything's out of stock anyways.
>>
>>61263234
They're both shit to be honest. The Asus looks slightly less shit though, just from eyeballing it.

Is LogicalIncrements a decent start to look for a new monitor? Don't know if going from 60 to 144hz will be as noticeable compared to jumping from 30 to 60hz. Hoping $400USD is enough for something decent.

>>61262883
Noted. Currently looking for a 1440p monitor, which should be a decent upgrade from my old Acer G185HV.
>>
>>61260822
Alright I want to build a new computer with a "Intel - Core i7-7700K 4.2GHz Quad-Core Processor" but and I want to make full use of it what do I need to get?

I already have a GTX 980 graphics card so I don't need a new one.

My budget is $800. Can I do it? What parts should I get?
>>
>>61263525

>>
>>61261361

Doesn't look bad, but not a fan of the drive bays at the top, or the covers on the front. Ideally I'd want the define c with tempered glass. Fractal design refuses to stop using plastic it seems
>>
If my 1060 is hitting around 100 fps in games, will there be screen tearing if I get a 144hz monitor without gsync? I figure I'll get an AMD card in the future so I'd rather get a freesync now.
Would lowering the refresh rate help with the tearing? Was hoping to get an AOC G2460PF during the Prime sale, assuming it doesn't suck.
>>
>>61263766
You can lower the refresh rate to 60, 100 or 120fps if you can't hit 144. Screen tearing isn't as bad at 144Hz either way though, since you can only see the tear for 1/144th of a second.
>>
Any suggestions?

https://pcpartpicker.com/list/Gmz7jc

Mainly just browsing and 1080p/60hz gaming
1070 is a placeholder, i might go with the cheapest vega card or get a 1050ti until i can get a mid-range card again.

I was thinking of going 1440p/144hz but i didn't really want to stretch my budget by 50% for a new monitor so i'll just stick to 1080p for now.
It's already a considerable upgrade since i'm still using an ancient core2duo.
>>
>>61264029
If that's so, why are people shelling out an extra $200 for gsync?
>>
>>61263602
Start by getting a "AMD - Ryzen 5 1600 3.2GHz 6-Core Processor" instead. The 7700K is a complete waste of time and money unless you have a 144Hz+ monitor and the graphics card to drive it.

>>61263766
Lowering the refresh rate will make it worse. Tearing is less noticeable at higher refresh rates, but it's still noticeable.

>>61264305
Marketing. Gaymers are some of the dumbest people on the planet. I'd rather have the tearing than pay for GoySync. Shame AMD can't get their fucking act together on the graphics card front.

I upgraded my MOBO, the old one came with bios while this one with UEFI support. I had dual boot (w7-linux mint).

Oh shit.

Was looking to get an ultra-wide curved VA panel, but decided to try a cheaper test-monitor first & re-evaluate when the new VAs come out.

Should I get a cheaper VA to see how the ghosting looks, or a cheaper IPS to see how the BLB looks & to compare color/picture qualities when I order the VA?

Figure it'd be wise to get it as a curved/ultrawide too, to see if those're worth it before a bigger purchase.

An R5 1600. Same price, two extra cores, eight extra threads, same single thread performance as that i5 (and more if you overclock). Plus it comes with a a decent cooler. It's an absolute no-brainer.

https://pcpartpicker.com/list/tDZwQV
>>
>>61265182
You'll still notice significant dips, and yes things are smoother. Thing is, the smoothness also means it's easier to see fast-moving objects/make out quick-moving scenery. Something that's nice to have in applicable vidya.

Find a cheap placeholder, and ride out the storm.
The mining craze is so severe, it's driving up the prices of even non-mining cards, even on the secondary market. Used GTX 970s are going for $200 on ebay.
Between this, SSD and RAM prices, building a gaming PC now is a huge mistake. At least when it ends, there will be a glut of cheap GPUs.

About to pull the trigger on this one, any feedback is appreciated. I also plan on buying a couple AOC G2460PF monitors and a couple more case fans, maybe cable extensions if I need it for a tidy tower. All the manual prices are what I'm buying from the local Microcenter, the CPU and MOBO are a bundle. I'd get a 1700 and just use the Wraith cooler if it wasn't out of stock. SSD, HDD and PSU are recent purchases to hold me over from failing parts on my current toaster that I'll carry over with a clean W10 install on the Samsung.

Only thing now is to decide if going to a shady site for free or discounted (Kinguin) Windows 10 or if I should not bother and get it legitimately for my vidya.

Used it as recently as February, when I bought a 1090T to fuck around with after selling my 6700K in preparation for Ryzen. Handled a 4GHz/1.45V overclock like a champ.

You're right about the waste, keeping a $450 budget I come up with the Acer XG270HU. If that's as good as the reviews and logical increments says then I could get a mount for my Acer G185HV. Main reason I want a second monitor to keep everything visible with my games hogging the first.

Yeah. HuB did a video on it recently as well as that German YouTuber. Both found it to be perfectly capable of modern games with performance coming in about 580/1060 levels when OC. Really good gpu if you can get it at 1050ti/rx 570 prices (pre mining prices not current inflated prices).

I'm looking at buying a new monitor. I'm look at either a 2k or a 4k monitor. My OS is shit for scaling, so I need something that is reasonable at 100%.

I don't do any gaymen, so it's all about productivity. I sit about 2 feet away from the monitor. My budget is $300-500 I was thinking a 32" 2k monitor, which works out to 91ppi, which is the same as my current dual FHD monitor setup.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Correct me if I'm wrong, SATA is preferable for boot because it boots before NVMe? Are there any companies I should favor/avoid or are storage solutions mostly the same.

980ti is pretty much on par with a gtx 1070. Don't know much about Australian pricing but if there are any 1070s going for around the same price as the 980 ti I'd get the 1070 every time. If the 980 ti's are much cheaper then I'd get that instead.

980 ti is still a top gpu and powers through anything you throw at it at 1080p and in most games at 1440p. It also overclocks like crazy and an extra 15-20% of performance can be extracted.

The following builds are oriented towards gamers with no cpu overclocking intentions. All featured builds feature a windowed case paired with a fully modular psu. Windows is included, a cd drive is not. However; it's unnecessary because the installation comes with a usb stick.

Lol no it isn't, the OP has seen it's fair number of changes in the past two months

And i disagree with your way of thinking that there's go-to builds depending on price point. Every user has very different need and as such every user will have to spend his money differently, let's take an example: your $1000 build has an R5 1400, an a320 motherboard, 3200MHz RAM and a 500GB SSD (on top of buying windows). The average gamer would be much much more comfortable on an R5 1600 + b350 + 12/16GB + small cooler, pirating windows and two 1TB hard drives (one of Windows & one for games), and it'd probably perform noticeably better even. In my case your $1000 build would be complete dogshit for me too because i'd benefit more from R7 1700 + 1050ti than 1400 + 1070 or whatever you wanna pick. Stop with the way of thinking that X price points = X builds, the distribution of price in a $1000 component list can and do change very heavily based on user

A 1060 is fine for most games at 1440p, a 1070 is more than enough. A 1080 for 1440p gaming is idiotic. For 1080p you could use a 1050tu for most games but if you're planning on playing some demanding titles a 1060 would be better.
>>
>>61267748
Ssds are basically mandatory for new builds now. But you could get away with a much cheaper one, even 120gb is fine just for your OS.

>>

SSDs use less electricity than HDDs

Instant boot. I legitimately gasped the first time I booted Windows off of SSD.

Also you should have two drives anyway, putting personal data on C: is retarded. This way if you have to reinstall you don't have to worry about lost data. Might as well go SSD and HDD for storage. Separate data drive means OS and driver updates don't bottleneck your whole computer as well. Ssd makes updates fast which is nice.

>>61267841
IMO:

Avoid Belkin, check some review websites on good routers, spend $100-$150. Also consider a good modem if that's the kind of internet you have.
>>
>>61267779
>One large SSD is superior than one small SSD + one large HDD.

For operating system performance, yes. For gamers who want the best gaming performance e.g. best graphics or fps, no. Ssd's are still an optional luxury and can eat up a massive chunk of a budget. For a typical casual pc gamer a regular hdd will be fine.

I've actually never had an ssd before because I don't feel the need for one. That's not to say I don't think it will be a noticeable upgrade if I ever want to upgrade. There's nothing that I do on my pc which has made me feel the need to get an ssd since I built my pc 4 years ago.

Cpu + gpu are the main priority when budgeting. I'm sure that it can be agreed that a 1600 + 1070 paired with a hdd is a better investment than a 1400 + 1060 paired with an ssd for a $1k budget.

It's just not worth downgrading your cpu + gpu that far simply for faster boot times and maybe slightly faster in game/application load times.

High end air is better than most lower or mid-range AIOs and costs about the same. You need to step up to 240mm radiator models to leave something like the Noctua NH-D15 in the dust, at the expense of greater cost and added noise, especially at idle. Pump noise is why I can't stand AIOs, personally. Your hearing may vary.

AIOs put almost no strain on the board whereas huge ass air coolers cause board flexing when you move the system around. Not a huge deal in most cases but if you intend to move the system around then it can be a problem. And of course, AIOs are easier to work with since the radiator is mounted to the case and you just have to deal with the tubes. Memory clearance is also not an issue.

OTOH, air coolers have no real failure rate except in the fans themselves. They don't have a pump that can fail or and they can't leak. They're also cheaper.

Performance-wise the top end AIOs will outperform air coolers but whether or not that is worth it is up to you. Fan selection can make a significant difference to performance and importantly also to noise. If you have an Intel CPU you may not see a difference at all depending on if you delidded and put liquid metal in there. If you did then you'll get a bigger delta with an top-end AIO vs even a Noctua DH15.

Wouldn't worry about it, the only actual bugs seem to be related to VMWare and some gcc compiler options. If you don't use either then you should be fine and RAM issues are easily addressed by using different sticks. Check the QVL for your boards and check on forums online if you really want to hit high frequencies reliably.

Keep in mind that RAM speed OCing is dependent on the CPU as well as the board.

im looking at 2 deals right now
1 - a 9590 and sabertooth for 100
2 - 2 980s for 350
I feel like both are pretty damn good deals, obviously I know the 9590 is ancient and a fucking nightmare to cool, but i figure that with a good used gpu (read 970 or similar) and some gaymer rgb crap i could probably flip that as a cheap build pretty quick. and the 980s arent the best for for that price they're hard to beat
any thoughts?
>>
>>61270691

Never, EVER buy a 9590. What you do is buy one of the lower clocked 8 core chips (my choicei s either 9320e or 8370e - they might nit go quite as high as a 9590 but are considerably less leaky and thus easier to cool) as all batches made after the release of the 8370 clock the same in practical terms. The sabertooth is a good board to pump 200w through as well.

I've stumbled upon lack of PSU variety in my area, what are considered good ones for a budget build? I'm getting R5 1600, 1050ti and 8 gb ddr4 3kgz ram.

Anything Seasonic and Silverstone with an 80 Plus rating is good (i.e. all of them), Corsair are generally fine so long as you avoid the CX series.

If I were you I'd just get the Seasonic/Silverstone one with the highest wattage on whatever budget you can afford, the less you can stress a PSU the quieter it will be.

I found an old Silverstone SST-ST85F.
It's an 850W PSU, fully modular, but it's missing couple of cables, one of which is the PCIe 8 pin I need for my RX 480.

Will I be able to use a dual molex to an 8 pin PCIe, or convert the 2 PCIe 6 pins to an 8 pin? (which is safer? I'd like to have the molex connectors free, since I only have one cable which gives me 2 connectors atm).

Can I use an 6 pin extension in order to connect the PSU to the adapter (dual 6 pin to 8 pin) or will I have to convert one end from female to male?

pic related, it's the PSU (duh).
>>
>>61271277
Looks pretty clean desu.
>>
>>61271349
Thanks. Thing is Corsair VS is considerably cheaper than the other two, so I added it into the equation to cut possible corners. Initially I was aiming at SilverStone with 500w. Pcpartpicker tells me my estimated wattage is 230w so I should be fine
>>
>>61271398
But a define mini C is a small case with restricted airflow, getting reference and mixing it with a blower fan doesn't seem smart to me desu.
>>
>>61271405
The PCIe standards are overbuilt, so in reality its not even a problem converting a single 6 pin to single 8 pin, ran a 980Ti and R9290 like that no problems. Two 6's to an 8 is a good option.

Personally wouldn't use molex for something like that, but it'd probably work just fine too.

>Can I use an 6 pin extension in order to connect the PSU to the adapter (dual 6 pin to 8 pin) or will I have to convert one end from female to male?

I don't really get what you're asking.
>>
>>61271387
>that build
Not bad. Solid PC. I hate how flooded the market is with old PCs, makes selling an old build next to impossible, otherwise I'd build a new one.
>>
>>61271436
The PSU has 2 6pin PCIe connectors, what cable do I need in order to use them?

Will I need to buy a 6pin extension, a male plug and make it a male-to-male 6pin PCIe cable in order to use it? (2 of them obviously, in order to use the dual 6 pin to 8 pin adapter, which will then lead to a sleeved extension and then to the GPU).
>>
>>61271409
The define mini c has enough space in between the front panel and the fans to get an ample amount of air into the case. I'll get another fan to put in the front of the case to insure that it won't catch fire senpai

Your RX480 is just a single 8pin? If so all you need is a 2x female 6pin to 1x male 8pin, not complicated, pic related, your GPU might have even came with one in the box.

Unless I'm not understanding the question.

Sorry for putting it so shitty, I'm just tired and I can't put together a proper sentence.

These cables weren't included, and they wouldn't be of any use anyway.

I salvaged this PSU from an old prebuilt Core 2 Quad era PC, and it's missing all of its PCIe power cables.

I think it needs a male-to-male cable in order to make shit work, if you still don't get it, just look at the power connector of a GPU and the power connector that this PSU has (the 6 pin ones).

I see, I thought you meant the others were missing and that's all it had.

'Male-to-male' cables are just PSU cables, to my knowledge they're all the same, just pulled out my Silverstone modular PCIe cables and they are exactly the same fitting as my EVGA one, it is just wires leading to a fitting after all.

Just buy some PSU cables and you're good to go.

https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/guide/yDFfrH/great-amd-gaming-build

https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/guide/hsgXsY/excellent-gaming-build

I'd like to build one myself, but don't really know enought to pick the relevant parts individually.

Also both of those builds are recommending the GTX 1080 at the cost of £479. Is this particularly expensive in light of miners buying up graphics cards? I don't know what the usual going rate for one is, and it is worthwhile holding off for a few months if they are overpriced at the moment?
>>
>>61271690
The S340 and P400 are just a few more dollars more and are better cases then the one you selected.
You don't need thermal paste unless you have no more in stock cause the H7 comes with paste pre-applied.
On that note, you might want to not pick the H7 cause CRYORIG coolers don't ship with AM4 brackets at the moment so you need to order that separately and apparently they aren't very stable.
Make sure your RAM is on the QVL.
Aside from that everything is good.
>>
>>61271717
The i5 one is outdated. The first link is fine although the case could be better.
>>
>>61271717
Yes. Both are decent build.
As to the GPU, that's actually standard currently. Due to miners, mid-range cards don't exist. Your choices are pretty much RX550, RX560, GT1030, GTX1050,, GTX 1050Ti, GTX 1080, or GTX 1080Ti.
anything beyond them has been obliterated by miners.
