The Rantopad MXX I ordered just arrived, and being my first mech ever I'm quite pleased with the build. Was having a tough time finding an 80%, brown switch and blue backlight keyboard, so I got an RGB one and I'll just set it to solid blue. Might prepare a mini review later if anyone is interested.
>>
>>61262274
cant find any info on the keycaps, so im assuming they are shitty, shiny abs caps

get thicc pbt keycaps and you are set for a long time, unless you wanna try blue switches
>>
>>61262376

I'm not an expert by any means, and I'm not at home right now, but from what I saw they seem to be ABS sadly (the ABS guns I used to play airshit with feel similar). Otoh, some people report standard sized keycaps, so in theory I can swap them down the road.
>>
>>61262376

Oh and I went in on browns willingly. I do got a tester previously, and I prefered the tactile, but more lightweight and quiet switches

The non-flashy Logitechs are fairly good. I actually prefer their own Romer-G switches when it comes to backlighting as it doesn't just flood light everywhere and keeps the light directed a the keys. Shame the are using more Cherry MX now. But 80 euro for a refurb is pretty expensive. I guess that's why you're called yuropoors.

Eeeeew! Lights on a kb are disgusting.

Your should be wishing that you had gone with a the true pro model.

Anyway, excellent choice nonetheless.

I can't find the {}[; %$&* by touch (yet).

Tbh as I typed that and looked down at my current keyboard and realised that I've had the backlight disabled for the last two years. I'll be fine. Might get some plain white keycaps though
>>
Lads, I think I might be a raging homo. I walked into Best Buy more than half a year ago and tried out some Corsair board with those "silent" linear switches. The thing is, I can't stop thinking about it. I want to get linear switches with the smoothest stem, put thick PBT caps on em, and start typing a million words at once.
>>
>>61263281
>I can't find the {}[; %$&* by touch (yet).
if you have an IQ over 100, I'm sure you could learn some keystrokes. don't be a fucking dolt. learn how to type.

>Tbh as I typed that and looked down at my current keyboard and realised that I've had the backlight disabled for the last two years. I'll be fine. Might get some plain white keycaps though
I prefer darker blanks caps because they don't show any sign of dirt or dust. go with black or dolch dark gray PBTs for alphas.
>>
>>61263332
I used to have a corsair strafe with mx silents, was pretty happy at the time.

Now typing on a topre clone (plum 87) and even happier, shits godlike.
>>
>>61263367
Good point, modifiers in white then?
>>
>>61263332
If you just care about actuation distance, just get a Topre board that can change its actuation to like 0.1mm.

If you just want the smoothest switch, get Gateron Clears or Reds.
>>
>>61263521
doesn't matter. just use whatever comes with your alphas. most will give you a whole bunch of extra keys because no one really sells alphas alone... don't waste money on extra caps.
>>
>>61263173
das has gone down in quality and they started using cheaper switches but teir prices stayed the same.

with that said, at the price they are asking, there are better options.
>>
How much voltage does a led mech keyboard need?

I have a bluetooth adapter, battery powered, but it cant power my keyboard with 5v.
>>
>>61263332
there's no problem with reds in itself. its when people make misinformed decision because of gaymen meme. but i suggest buying a switch tester from amazon and then return it so you can get a better idea.

i thought i didn't like clicky until i tried greens. also blacks feel comfy

So I'm back at home, and mind you, I'm still a novice regarding mech keyboards. But seeing the keycaps, I think I can safely say
>well shit

BUT, and there's always a BUT, this meh keycaps, and the fixed feet (and to an extent the complicated system to set the backlight, at least when driverless) are the only issues I'm finding so far. In general I think I like what I got for only 70€, and that is an rgb keyboard with a sturdy ?aluminium? chassis (at least compared to my old rubber dome), and Gateron switches.
Now first of all, give me an hand here, these look like standard sized keycaps right?
One thing that pleased me is seeing a fat usb connector for the keyboard, and notched at that, so it fits snugly under the dedicated slot under the keyboard. I did test standard usb connectors in it and they still fit relatively tightly, so no issue replacing it if the cable fails.
As for the keys themselves, they do feel nice enough (while they're still new anyway), have not much play, and save for the spacebar, virtually no rattle.
Speaking of which, the spacebar feels very tightly secured when I try to pull it out, would like to see how it's secured underneath to see if it's easily swappable. Is this normal behaviour?
>>
>>61264602
It sounded like he was saying he typed well on silver/speed switches and badly on browns, in which case I think reds would probably be the closest you can get in most premade baords since silvers are uncoomon.
>>
>>61264550
I can give you a choice based off of brand alone.

Logitech
>crappy Romer-G switches
>crappy ABS thin keycaps

Leopold
>actual Cherry switches
>usually PBT keycaps

Leopold is a good brand, and you should never under any circumstances get a Logitech board. A fucking Razer board is better now.

I was planning to only post about the backlight if asked about it, but fuck it I have it ready anyway.

Backlight looks very uniform, which pleased me, and color me surprised and relieved, it HAS onboard memory. So if I plug it off, or turn off the pc, it saves the backlight setting, and doesn't become a christmas tree when booting up.
But setting it up is...interesting. Well it is fully featured, that's for sure, but also complicated as fuck.
Score 1 for the keyboard first of all: hitting the Fn key lights up in white any keys with available functions, a neat little feature I think. But ok, here we go:
Fn+F10 seems to switch between single color and multicolor setting. I say seems, it shows slightly different behaviours depending on the lighting effects.
Fn+F11 cycles between the different lighting effects, such as color waves, breathing, turn the light off, etc. This doesn't have the solid backlight by itself, I'll get to that in a second.
Fn+F12 sets what the lighting does with a key pressed. It can be turn the light off on that key individually, send a color wave across the keyboard, towards the key, or do nothing.
Fn+Arrow Keys set a constant background color, even when no lighting effects are activated. Start with Fn+Up Arrow, and the whole keyboard turns off, set the amount of RGB using Fn+The other Arrow keys (the light up with each color accordingly, you can even mix colors, it is RGB after all), and Fn+Up again to exit this mode.
So, to achieve the solid blue I wanted, I had to set:
>Fn+F10 - Single Color
>Fn+F11 - No lighting effects
>Fn+F12 - Do nothing on key press
>Solid blue background
>>
>>61264639
i'm considering buying one
where did you get it for 70 euro?
>>
>>61264639
Those caps are as thin as thin can be, you really should change them ASAP.
Having a USB-A connector instead of Mini is pretty cool. Those LEDs look weird as fuck, and hopefully don't interfere with something in thick Cherry profile.

Check if the spacebar uses Cherry stabilizers or just wires. I have a feeling you're going to have to "push" the wire off the spacebar to remove it.
>>
So a friend gave me this, and in theory it would be really nice except the membrane keys are absolute fucking mushy garbage. My $10 curved microsoft membrane kb feels better. This is supposed to be used for gaming, but I'd take greens over this. They're heavy AND mushy.

Is there anything at all I could do to mod this? Or would I be better off making my own from scratch? Do you think I could realistically reuse the casing and replace the guts with my own PCB, switches, and controller, and perhaps retain the use of the joystick and maybe even the screen?

Ebay, from a store that's claims being owned by Drevo, at least from their pamphlet. If I'm not mistaken, it's the only store selling the RGB version of the MXX there anyway. They also sell it with Blue and Black switches, Red seems to be sold out, shame really, my cousin wanted one with red switches after seeing this one.
Btw I was the entire time praying it wouldn't be seized by customs, but lady luck was on my side for this one.

No one responded to you last time because there's absolutely nothing you can do to "mod" it. You'd have to make 3D printed caps, 3D printed plate, wire all your cables to a controller and lose the screen and joystick, and that's only IF that small plastic case can hold the wiring, switches, and plate.

Or you can just make one of these.

Can anyone vouch for this keyboard/recommend something better?

I have a Ducky one and I bought it specifically for the minimalistic case. I went for the one with dye-sub PBT keycaps, and as far as keyboards go its great. It has a steel plate which helps give the plastic case a lot of stability making it hard to flex, and the keycaps are very thicc at 1.5 mm. There are plenty of other software features since the keyboard is mostly programmable, but there is no dedicated software to help you program it. It kinda sucks that Ducky raised the prices on all their keyboards by 10 bucks since they were so popular, but I think its still worth it.
>>
>>61265645
all backlit keyboards will be shitty looking, the good keycaps don't shine through so you should have pure white leds if anything, but you don't even need a backlight when the keycap has good visibility like >>61265756

>>
>>61266462
also look at gateron yellow, but i'm not sure which version of gateron yellow they're selling, probably the newer one, but the first version of gateron yellow was heavier than black

>Recently, I acquired a custom 60% board with Gateron Yellows, and I really like typing with these switches. In marked contrast to any Cherry mx switch I've tried, Gateron Yellows feel just about right -- they have an actuation force of 50g - 55g (about the same as Gateron Blacks but lighter than Cherry Blacks at 60g - 65g), but their bottoming-out force of ~65g is less than that of Gateron Blacks (~70g) or Cherry Blacks ~80g.

>There is some confusion about Gateron Yellows, because apparently there was an earlier version that had a very high bottoming-out force -- these were dubbed "Super Blacks", which were very different from the current generation of Gateron Yellows.

Perfect brown sort of feel switch but far superior in that it has force at the top of actuation calling to how a Topre switch activates, without the extra price

So I posted about this a thread or two ago and got a response but wasn't really helping too much.

So, coming from /csg/, I got a Jame Donkey 619 and wanted to mod and put it in an enclosure since I like the smooth top surfaced keyboards like the old office keyboards (kinda like the model M), HHKBs, or Quickfires as opposed to the floating key designs.
I've seen the same/very similar layouts of keyboards on sites, and wanted to know if there's any enclosures that could fit it (Function keys being very close to the number row)
I was linked to a NerD TKL enclosure that's just pieces of acrylic that's just held by some through-hole screws
(http://www.gonskeyboardworks.com/housings-and-related-parts/82-acrylic-housing-for-nerd-tkl.html)
For a simple enclosure like that, I especially don't feel comfortable paying near double what I paid for the keyboard itself. on top of that, I'm more looking into the ones that don't have screw heads sticking out of it, ones that typically also have to snap together with plastic tabs.

Anyone know of any enclosures that'd fit something like the 619 without costing a lot more than the entire keyboard itself?

>>61270854
>>61270912

It's a matter of finding good knockoffs, outemu for instance is very passable for the price from what I've heard, while greentech is quite garbage
>>
>>61270938
They all have super cancerous LED's and faggoty gamer printing too.
>>
>>61270854

Most aren't even true mechanical keyboards, just mechanical feel ones, as in, all the switch housings have a nub at the bottom that hits a rubber dome.

That being said, you have some actual mechanical ones there, (Ajazz AK33, Motospeed CK104/108, etc.), most of them use Blue switches only though.
>>
>>61270953
Most, not all. Here's one with no leds, plain black aesthetic, and a sane keycap font:
http://ebay.com/itm/Easterntimes-Tech-I-500-Keybord-/222556677837
Only downside is the uterus logo (which isn't all that intrusive and can be painted over if you're really that autistic).
>>
>>61270953
Mine has non-gaymery font and red LEDs which are actually pretty easy on the eyes when its dark. Inb4 why do you want LEDs when you can touchtype. Yeah, I can but I like the looks of it, and its pretty handy when I really want to be sure that I press the right button (ie. Typing a password), I can also dim it so it doesn't rape my eyes, you can turn them off too if you don't want them at all. So you can find a keyboard without shitty font and without shitty LEDs. Yes I am aware that there are keyboards with gaymer font on keycaps and gay rainbow LEDs but its not the case with every single one. And I like my Zorro switches, even if they're a bit scratchy, just a bit. The keycaps are a bit shiny already too, but given the price it's okay and it's not like these are irreplaceable, though keycap set with these 1.5x ESC, del and arrows would be more expensive than the whole keyboard. I'm waiting for Anne Pro with Gateron Reds, so maybe I'll feel the scratchiness of the Zorro switches more when I receive it, but if you really want a mechanical keyboard, then even a $30 one will propably be an upgrade over most rubber dome cheapos.

Chink knock offs are just as good as cherry and any differences that I'm not aware of are easy to ignore considering you can get them at prices comparable to a nice membrane.

Yes, you then have mechanicals that ALWAYS have to be bottomed out, feels like shit. First keyboard that I got and returned was a mechanical feel one.
>>
>>61271220
I read some reviews that say it's actually pretty decent. It uses outemu blues so you can read up on those if you want.

But at $20, not only are you not losing much even if it's shit, but you're not going to find anything better either. Cheapest gateron boards are like $40 and then that's the meme donkey, normal ones usually start at $60, and even those still always come with semi-shitty ABS - about $100 is where the cheapest PBT keyboards start (like the tada68). So the only real possible differentiator at that price range is the build itself (i.e. case/assembly quality), which according to reviews is just fine, and the looks/aesthetic.

Fuckk, who do I believe?

I really fucking want this https://www.modelfkeyboards.com/product/f77-model-f-keyboard/ but I just got into mechs, I don't know if I want to spend $350 on it. Especially if the chinks will make the price drop. But on the other hand, if the chinks won't get to it after all, then these will likely only go up in price after the run ends and it will be a good investment even if I change my mind.

Arghhh

I didnn't want to buy one due to the hueg case, but there is a slightly slimmer one that is now available. I'll wait until the last minute to get one. then flip it for double what I paid for. You have to understand even if the chinks clone it autists will pay premium for the original. Just look at clack factory for example. The chinks have cloned all their products, yet geekwhack users pay $500 bucks for original keycaps

>>

Can't read that blurry shit, but it's likely an extended mouse pad.
>>
>>61277218
I thought that was a one-off meme where one complete idiot with way too much money paid several orders of magnitude too much

Do you think the autists will prefer the original design or the slim case version? My own inner autism compels me to buy the full one but that's more of a replica of the original original, could it sell worse due to this or am I overthinking things?

Hi, I'm looking for a silent keyboard that has the same feel as my Model M..halp

Matias quiets are generally considered the best tactile quiet switch. Alternatives are cherry greens.

I don't keep a list of recommendations close by but I can tell you both of these switches are relatively rare so expect to go for niche products specifically targeting enthusiasts, and thus use up probably most of your budget.

Look at keyclack keycaps. They regularly sell for $400+. I'm sure the original case will sell better, but I want to at least use mine for a bit before I sell it. He's gonna keep making them until he runs out of money and materials, which at the rate things are going its gonna last till the start of next year.

Well that settles it, I'm gonna buy one. Thing is, their website says I should order before the end of this month, are they being giant faggots? I know last month it said the same thing, and now it's still open, so are they just doing the same shit every month?

Also what should I get for keycaps? I take it replacements can be gotten from Unicomp (right?) so would I be better adding some to my order to choosing "get your own" and buying them separately? I couldn't find much info on the material and quality, given the guy's attitude I doubt it's not good PBT but maybe caps are the one thing he cheaped out on (and they only add like $25 to the price, so...)
>>
>>61270745
You could try your luck by 3D printing your own enclosure. It looks like the standard ANSI layout so it should be pretty easy to make one, and it would come out cheaper in price. Cheaper in quality, too.

I'm gonna use the keycaps from my SSK since they have all the sub legends I need. They probably just buy them from unicomp in bulk which is why they aren't all that expensive. Also unicomp does make custom keycaps with custom printing if you want to go even more autismo
>>

Nice, makes sense.

Here's a wild question though: would a HHKB-style layout trigger your average reddit-tier autist? Because I would probably prefer the split right shift and lowered backspace, but I'm basing this purchase off the fact that I could easily resell it.
>>
Why do people even buy Cherry-switched boards these days?
>>
>>61276818
You really should have a solder iron and solder anyway to fix and make electronics, but if you don't already have that stuff, $17 is kinda alright. A lot of people say that the easiest thing to learn soldering from are DIY keyboard kits.

You missed out.
>>
>>61274943

>>61279448
the volume wheel really limits your options. you could always get a separate volume wheel or bind a key+mousewheel combo

https://www.armyourdesk.com/products/ajazz-ak60-110-key-mechanical-keyboard-cherry-mx-brown-switch
>>
>>61279516
its the other way around. HHKB layouts are a meme that reddit users love
>>
>>61279562

>>
>>61279860
Yeah, but I would have though they'd be different autists from the ones that would overpay for original run thingies.

Then again the ARE the kind of autists that overpay for meme layout rubber domes

>>61279815
>>61279448
Why do people like volume wheels on their keyboards? It means they listen to stuff often enough, and yet despite spending $100+ on a keyboard they aren't willing to spend ~$150 on a decent audio setup with an amp+dac (which would provide an analog volume wheel) and good headphones.
>>
>>61277085
Have hope.
The worst thing we can expect if that we should form group buys for a new capacitive pcb, feet and a controller
>>
>>61279937
That isn't likely to drop the price much though, desu. Your average meme PCB seems to sell for at least like $100, then factor in a good case (another $70-$100) and keycaps (another $70-$100) and you're up to about $300; I have no idea how much production of the mechanisms (flippers+barrels+springs) would cost but I'm pretty sure it wouldn't be $25

>>
>>61280139
Oh, that's true. Might be a neat idea.
>>
>>61280171
Fun fact: The guys at deskthority already did that with the expensive-as-fuck SSK. They say that the feel is almost the same as the original model F and also has natural nkro thanks to the new controller they made.
https://deskthority.net/workshop-f7/f-ssk-t10744.html
The only issue is getting the capacitive feet from the model F.
The best hope for modern capacitive bulking springs is this mod. It also forces us to do a bolt mod, so it will improve the lifespan of the IBM Model M.
If only Unicomp did a good job innovating the keyboard...

Gateron Browns actually have a bump, but you can hardly feel it.

There are a bunch of other switches at that weight that have a way better bump than browns.

It is a standard ANSI layout, but compared to many other similar keyboards, the function keys are much closer to the number row. Nothing a bit of CAD file modding couldn't fix though.

I have a budget of ~$120, give or take some.
My requirements for a keyboard would be full a full keyboard and PBT keycaps.

In terms of board, I like the look of this. https://www.pcgamingrace.com/products/glorious-modular-rgb-mechanical-gaming-keyboard-barebones?variant=33499349710. However, I don't care at all about the LED lights.

I'm not 100% set on the switch I want, but I am leaning towards gateron brown switches.

So basically my question is, is going the modular keyboard route the best way to go about this (PBT, Gateron brown, full keyboard). Just putting those three things into the search on mechanical keyboard dot com brings up nothing.

And, are there any other boards that do this same thing? I can't help but feel like some of my money is going to be wasted on the LED lights I will never use
>>
>>61281485
For $40, if you don't mind gaudy gamer plastic trim, or a keyboard without flip up feet if you remove said trim like me, it's pretty nice. Especially with the gateron switches. It even has doubleshot keycaps that are the same thickness as razer and corasir keyswitches, but being textured and doubleshot, are much better than either.
Be careful when looking around, there's a version with kailh switches that are much easier to find on places like amazon, they're very much not worth it. It should come in gateron or kailh switches, and as far as i know, i've only seen the full sized one with kailh.
My only regret is that I think I should've gotten the black switches, but hey, you live and you learn.
If you plan on getting the blue switches, then you may have better luck with other keyboards, as this one lacks some things, but i wouldn't say it's bad, you just may possibly find better with the large array of blue switch keyboards on the market in the price range.

Sounds like you want a Ducky: https://mechanicalkeyboards.com/shop/index.php?l=product_detail&p=1684

I really wouldn't recommend the Cherry Browns though, unless you like them after trying a switch tester.

If you want a board with PBT keycaps and Gateron switches, you're gonna have a tough time doing it considering that Gateron switches are used for "cheap" boards and usually come with cheap ABS. The only board I can think of that comes with Gateron switches and PBT keycaps is the Tada68, but that isn't a 100% board.
>>
>>61283865
>>61283625

To continue my post, you could buy a cheap Gateron board, and then buy really well made EnjoyPBT keycaps in Cherry profile that you'll never need to upgrade again. $40 for blanks, $80 with legends.

https://kbdfans.myshopify.com/collections/keycaps/products/enjoypbt-blank-keycaps-117keys

Don't know where to get a cheap 100% Gateron board, but I've heard a lot of people like their James Donkey keyboard for $40-ish.
