Soviet Russia, China, other Communist states, most of them called themselves *socialist*, with Communism as a "long term goal".

Because: Communism is the society that socialism enables. Marx believed that capitalism held back society's progress because large-scale automation isn't possible -- after all, then how will the average non-capital-owning person buy anything that's made? But under socialism, people can work less and less and still buy things, therefore driving and encouraging an economy with high levels of autonomy. These high-levels of autonomy, while not eliminating scarcity in its entirety, reduces its burden to a large degree on the average population. This reduction in scarcity would reduce conflict between peoples and nations to a large degree to the point where any continuing presence of such is vestigial, and give rise to inclusive democracy.

The society in Star Trek is *exactly* what Communism is supposed to be.

But USSR and China weren't/aren't really socialist, either. Socialism, by Marxist definition, needs to be a republican form of government -- socialism is nothing more than the common man having an equal control of the government as the rich man. Actually, go read the Chinese Communist constitution. They're *supposed* to have elections and democracy. Before Mao took over the government through populist exploitation, the CCP was actually very inspired by US democracy, sought to emulate it, then improve upon it by removing the domination of capitalist elites. Then after Mao got into power, he killed all the communists who didn't denounce democracy.

The federation doesn't have a real economy, they have plentiful energy and can matter-replicate shit. Nothing is proprietary because everyone has the ultimate 3D printer for literally anything except free energy, but energy is seemingly free for civilian life.

That means not only is the software "open source", the hardware is also open source. You could also replicate a replicator, which means the replicator itself, is open source.

Open source doesn't really work for defense. The people that work on the avionics in the F35 have to work in secure rooms where you can't bring your phone in and you're restricted in what part of the software you can see and who in your company you can talk to about your projects. Also the rooms have the ceilings built so that they can be inspected to make sure no one's trying to bug the room. So there's no reason why a military space ship would ever be open source.
