HELP ME LADS

I'm on Linux Mint and I just switched to lightdm because I couldn't switch sessions to change desktop and window managers. I finally got booted into Gnome but now my brightness doesn't work and I can't open system settings. I have already tried Gnome on Fedora 25 (I'm not going to switch to Fedora I just want Gnome) and it worked fine.

I was also a pain in the ass to even switch to lightdm because on install it wouldn't tell me if I wanted to switch to it. I had to do sudo dpkg-reconfigure mdm or whatever. And when I booted it would sometimes go back to mdm.

All I want is a working Gnome.

hi, /fglt/.

What's a GTK music player that supports grouping music by Album Artist as opposed to simply Artist?

Otherwise, I don't really care what music player I use.

That functionality, though--to sort in terms of Album Artist--is pretty much the deal breaker for me.

Thanks, guys.

The nerds over at The Pirate Party have no idea what they're talking about. It's a bunch of childish, masturbatory bullshit, and it's an embarrassment that people like you would even LIKEN The Pirate Party to free software communities.

You just gotta install a font that uses them. If they show up in other places, like in your browser but not in the terminal then you should specify the fallback font. Not sure what it is in other terminals, but in urxvt you'd put it in ~/.Xdefaults:
>URxvt*font: xft:YourMainFont:pixelsize=YourFontSize,xft:GayFacebookTierEmojiFont

So I'm messing around with installing gentoo. Pretty new at this, but I successfully got my machine booting on its own with most devices working, except my ethernet.

I have a realtek gigabit ethernet, and the liveCD successfully uses the r8169 driver to set up the connection, yet I can't manage to even get the module loaded on my own. Googling around, it seems most have resorted to using the r8168 driver, which seems like a hassle.

I don't quite understand why the liveCD can successfully load the driver yet I can't. Do I really have to use the r8168 driver? Is there not a way to load the r8169 one in the same way the LiveCD does?

configured it myself. I tried building it into the kernel already, but that didn't fix the issue. I suspect the genkernel would help fix my issue, but I'd rather stick to manual configuration if I can.
Currently seeing if it is a firmware related issue and reinstalling firmware. Don't quite recall if I did that step or not when I installed in the first place.

How good is pic related?
I've been distro hopping for about 2 years and LM is one of the only distros I haven't properly tried yet.
Xubuntu was almost perfect for me but there's certain parts about it that feel unpolished and XFCE, as much as I love it, is starting to get dated.
I basically want an ubuntu based distro that Just Werks™ when I haven't got time to tweak things, has a big install base, is as polished as Solus and doesn't have a bunch of bloat / advertising like stock Ubuntu.
Being lightweight is a bonus but not a priority.
I'd most likely be going with cinnamon which I believe is lighter than Unity anyway.

I can use unity flawlessly keyboard-only and it only consumes 1.1~1.2 GB of RAM while no programs are open (just like gnome 3.22 for me). It doesn't lag at all on my system so idk wtf you guys are talking about, you guys probably just have older computers.
I mean, if I just update the kernel and avoid installing newer gnome versions and removing unity packages/installing the newer ones won't it just work?

A lot of people here and on the desktop threads use Parabola.

Intel distributes free drivers.

Ok, thanks.

I did find a couple sites that have some information regarding free GPU drivers.
h-node org lists hardware that supposedly work with only free drivers. Not a large database though.
free3D org has a huge list of GPUs' performance with free drivers, but there is no indication anywhere how outdated the information is or how it compares to the proprietary driver performance. Also, it basically only shows fps in glxgears which doesn't seem all that convincing.

Phoronix appears to have recent GPU benchmarks using only free drivers. I'll have to check that out.

For inheriting permissions (overriding umask) you can use `setfacl`. Use -d or d:... to set default perms. For inheriting group use chgrp to set group ownership and then `chmod g+s` to set thie setgid bit.

>>

I don't think that makes sense. If you are just setting normal fs perms that is the same as the acl normal perms. You use setfacl -d to set the defaults for new files so you don't have to constantly manually set it. If you do change it with chmod or whatever things will use that.

Most likely it's a systemd service file. Check that one and see under which user it runs. Maybe it creates a separate transmission user.

Nearly always if you mash F10 you can get into the BIOS (looks like you did). There's a guide here: https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c00364979

Also try mashing F11 and see if it gives you a boot menu. If it doesn't detect the USB then go into the BIOS and make sure the ports are ON. If it still won't boot, the USB is probably not set up right and needs to be re-written with unetbootin or whatever.

Let me know, I've had this problem on HPs before.

I already have rtorrent stop seeding files when they reach a ratio of 2, what would you guys recommend in order to have the files be automatically transferred?
I thought about having my desktop drives shared with the raspberry pi over NFS and just adding a rule to rtorrent to have it move the files automatically but the idea doesn't appeal to me.

It's been a couple of years since I kept up with the Linux scene at all, been working on Winblows machines all day for work which has kind of taken the fun out of computers for me.

I'm setting up a Linux PC and I want it to be pretty. What desktop environments are out now that are really good for eye candy? Last I remember it was just Compiz but nothing supported it very well. I'm at an intermediate skill level with Linux but I don't have hours of time to sink into making it work, it needs to work mostly out of the box. Hi there!

You seem to have made a bit of a mis take in your post. Luckily, the users of GNU/Linux are always willing to help you clear this problem right up! You appear to have referred to the GNU/Linux system as "Linux", but Linux is just a part of the system! Whoops! Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. You should always remember to say or write "GNU/Linux", unless you are referring to the kernel "Linux" alone!

Now, there's no need to thank me - I'm just doing my bit to help you get used to your new operating system!

What the fuck. How do we get free of this hell? Can't write graphical programs that run in fullscreen without breaking X, can't use wayland because it breaks on its own. Genius!

Dayum. I want to switch to loonix so much but the games man, linux ain't got shit on windows in gaming, and dualbooting is pointless and obnoxious and shit like wine is a joke.
If only only loonix was the main gaming platform on pc like windows is, it would be the perfect OS, but being a heavy gamer, i guess i'm stuck with windows for the rest of my life ;_;

xorg vs. wayland is literally sysv vs systemd.

So it seems to be that I have a number of issues after installing KDE Neon. I've moved back to Windows for now but I'd really like to use Linux if I can but similar issues pop up on every distro I try. These are some specific to KDE Neon

>Cannot log out/switch user/shutdown since ksmservice stops working and need to use power button to turn my comuter off and on (I think this is Nvidia related?)
>Booting into the OS is dodgy and might not even work at all
>Secondary monitor will not be detected by either display settings or Nvidia X Server Settings (I have a GTX 980), only my primary monitor is detected
>After installing graphics drivers and restarting, my desktop seemed to scale up to about 125%-150% size regardless of what I change my scaling to.
>There still seems to be screen tearing issues no matter what drivers, backend render I choose, or other compositor options.
>After installing graphics drivers, window decorations on Breezemite seem to have gigantic borders like this (Pic Related)

I really like KDE Neon and I want to use Linux on my desktop but I always seem to have issues installing it on my desktop. How do you /g/oys manage to fucking have linux work on your desktops so flawlessly.

No, it's more like openbsd vs freebsd (both are absolute garbage but at least freebsd is kinda usable if you don't mind hobo-tier conditions)

>>61258811
two computers

plug them both into the same peripherals

Linux is intended for servers, GUI in linux is just a poorly executed afterthought, don't listen to autists and use this simple chart:
are you building a server? use linux
are you building a dekstop? use windows
>>
>>61258889
First is KDE related.
Second is systemd related.
Third could be quite a few different issues, including pebcak, nouveau drivers (if applicable), or KDE.
Fourth is KDE again. It's a well-known bug.
Fifth is strange. If you had the compositor disabled that would be it but you say you still see it with the compositor. Try setting vsync somewhere? Not really sure abut this one.
Sixth is once again a KDE issue.

Your biggest problem is that you're trying to use KDE. Don't do that.
Your second problem is that systemd is a thing. But try fixing the first issue first.

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called "Linux", and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. All the so-called "Linux" distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

Figured it out, network cards that require firmware have to be loaded as modules else they won't load the firmware properly.

Guess I'll make it a habit to module network devices.

I had a similar issue about a year ago.
Plugging in a usb device would cause drives to remount read-only and would spam I/O errors.
Turned out my southbridge was dying and a few days later the Mobo wouldn't post anymore.

Does MS Office support linux through wine?

One thing i hate about linux is that heavy customization is required, but new distros and versions come out all the time, so you have to redo it all the time. windoze requires almost none, apart from setting a new wallpapper and new versions come out twice in a decade

I've installed Ubuntu 16.04 along side with Windows 7 in legacy mode. Each time I restart and try to boot windows, mouse does not work. I have to restart, unplug mouse, plug into different usb port, and then win may recognize it (maybe after two restarts). What gives? How do I solve this?

thats "experimental". Try it out by adding
deb http://ftp.debian.org/debian/ experimental main

to sources.list New experimental kernels should appear then in apt-cache search.

Fug.

It fucks up even with no usb device though, doesn't let me boot (see first picture I posted).
>>
>>61259454
I only had kernel panics in the last days of the motherboard.
The major problem was whenever i would shutdown/reboot fsck would have to repair the drive on the next boot.

try using another computer to install the os, then load the drive back into that system
>>
>>61259273
Gentoo. The only actually stable distro out there.
>>
>>61259389
That's still obviously an improvement. 2 as mentioned is systemd-related, use openrc instead (in particular, try void, slackware or gentoo).
5 would be more easily solved if we could have a demonstration of what you mean. For example, you could be referring to actual tearing or instead to greyed out first-fills (an inherent X problem, not fixable).
3 is most likely pebcak if it didn't work in either kde or gnome, however, since it's all completely plug-and-play for me and everyone at work.
>>
>>61259374
It is, according to debian shills who try to pretend their OS is not antiquated by design while at the same time maintaining that it's totally stable while their X server crashes.
>>
>>61259581
I reinstalled the liveusb and that part seems to work now.

I'll go blindly back up my /etc before overwriting / because I can't be bothered to sift through deciding what files I need, try to export a list of packages if I can actually find some usable documentation for xbps, then reinstall and report back.

It'd suck if my mobo died

So I've got a bad journal on one ext4 encrypted disk. I want to dd the data to another disk to recover it. It's capable of unlocking, but not mounting. Should I run sudo dd if=/dev/mapper/luks-eac7b048-2581-4d92-a7c9-8803c2542bdc of=/dev/sdc conv=noerror, sync ? minus the question mark, or write the disk unencrypted?

I think the next step for recovering whines about it or something, idk
