Let's settle this once and for all.

Should one turn off the computer ( Laptop or Desktop) off at night or not?

>Or are you lazy and just put it in sleep mode?
>>
im a firm believer that you should turn it off
but because i want to boost about my uptime in fetch threads, i put my laptop to sleep
>>
>>61235416
using a laptop? turn it off
using a desktop? turin it off too
Loonix and Wangblows don't flush disk cache before sleep. Enjoy your data loss if the power goes down while the system sleeps.

>power goes down on laptop
>laptop switches to battery power
>>
>>61235466
I'm a firm believer you should leave them on!
The repeated cooling then heating of your parts is bad for them, it's literally the thing that kills most parts.

Source: kept a powered on laptop in my bed since 2005 and never had any hardware (other than keyboards) fail

Sleep mode is fine. My work desktop hasn't powered down in like six months.

As long as the fans stop spinning and sucking dust into the case you're fine.
>>
I turn it off because my case flashes a stupid 1000000 candle power LED when sleeping.
>>
>>61235582
my macbook air hasn't been turned off in the last year.

I also haven't charged it for about a month and a half.
>>
>>61235606
So you never use it?
>>
>>61235620
Pretty much. The battery life is amazing though. My Thinkpad dies within a week if I leave it on standby like that.
>>
I turn everything off lol

Desktop - sleep
Laptop if I've booted up linux - sleep, if I booted Windows 10 - power off
You can't trust Windows not to wake your laptop when it feels like it, ideally while it's in your backpack so it can overheat the CPU and drain your battery,
>>
>>61235416
You put it in sleep mode, do you kill yourself every night instead of going to sleep?

Shut down, because ghosts sometimes wake my computer up in the middle of the night if it's in sleep mode

>his partitions aren't unmounted
>keys/passwords/etc still stored in RAM and able to be retrieved
If you're not using it, the secure thing to do is shut it down.

This, living in old buildings suck.
>>

I sold my battery for money on ebay
>>
turn it off

what type of stupid question is this
>>
>>61235566
Nice single data point. Capacitors dry out faster when at operating temperature, fans continue to suck crap in and cake dust on components, and thermal stress isn't a real problem anyway because the cooldown is gradual. It's better to turn if off.
>>
>>61236013
Do you know what sleep mode is?
>>
>>61235824
im pretty sure the guy uses thinkpad so it give sense
>>
I just close all cpu and io intensive programs and leave it on, set energy settings to balanced and sometimes turn off wifi if im not seeding/torrenting something. Also I set mechanical drives to spin down after 10 minutes, OS is on SSD. No sleep mode.
>>
>>61236100
Do you? Fans don't run and caps are cold because the load is ~1W. Sleep is about as good as power off.
