This has been the case for ages. However, you can confuse the driver into working if you pass a bogus argument as the hypervisor vendor id.

Unfortunately it would be trivial for NVidia to patch that over night, so if you want to have a PCI-passthrough enriched VM which isn't going to give you grief with a driver update, you should probably get a Radeon or a Quadro instead of a GeForce.

AMD aren't exactly perfect, it's only recently that their cards have been able to reset after use in a VM without the host rebooting. Also, if you want to use OVMF, only the RX400 series have a working UEFI vBIOS. Though to AMD's credit they did put out a vBIOS patch you can flash to fix that on Fury cards.

As usual it's a choice between AMD incompetence and NVidia unscrupulousness.

they've been doing this for a long time on consumer grade gpus.

This YouTuber has no idea what he's talking about. Their drivers have always done this, and you've always been able to get around it by setting the KVM to hidden (3 lines in libvirt XML).

Nvidia can suck a cock for CUDA and G-Sync, but this is nothing new or even noteworthy.

There is a one line workaround in QEMU currently to circumvent error 43 for Nvidia to enable hyperV.

>Looks like Microsoft doesn't want you to run windows 10 in a VM....
Microsoft are cocks but it has little to do with them, mostly Nvidia themselves hampering hyper-v on GTX cards so that people using such features (not gamers) buy the more expensive quadros instead.

Nvidia is a dick by trying to gimp passthrough, but once you work around it Nvidia cards works great in a VM. AMD means well but their drivers are inferior for passthrough still, most people having issues on passthrough forums are either AMD GPU users or Ryzen early adopters. (I have a Ryzen CPU, despite how optimistic Wendell is Ryzen is no where near Intel in VM performance right now)
>>

I don't give a fuck, my old eroges work with W7 virtualization. You'd have to be retarded if you actually want to play graphically intensive games not natively.
>>
>>61250798
Better at what?

Promising DX12 support across all their models back to FERMI only to find out that it performs worse?

Finding "bugs" in driver deployment after they get called out for gimping their older cards?

Laughing as they cut a thirty dollar check for something the CEO called a feature of the hardware, not a bug in the VRAM segmentation debacle?

Telling you to sit on their dick when issues that limit your hardware you own are artificially created just so they can upsell you on a card 10 times the price?

Is that what you mean by "better"?

But you sure saved a few pennies in power, and won with ten frames per second for a year. Better sell the new card and buy a newer card!

>>61251182

>>
>>61251324
Only on AMD CPU's, Intel+Nvidia will get you 99% performance as long as you're not doing anything intensive on the Linux host. I ran Firestrike on native Windows 10 vs. a VM, the difference was margin of error stuff.
>>
>>61251324
Mind explaining how you got to this incorrect assumption? Boy I hope you didn't mean losses with cpu running the hypervisor when we are talking about passing through peripherals
>>
>>61251352
Thats pretty legit.

Currently only running windows host, and linux vms, but may soon switch up.

Currently with 4790k and 970gtx; dont really game that much anymore games havent been as interesting and also much busier...

But now whenever I upgrade gpu or even cpu(trying to wait until ~2020) I'll have to check how this vm pass through performance is.

Had no idea even the cpu-gpu pairing could matter
>>
>>61233904
Not seen the video but I am using a Windows 10 VM with GPU passthrough with a 970.

But yeah you need to trick the Nvidia driver into not thinking he's in a VM.
literally why nvidia?
>>
>>61251677
>Had no idea even the cpu-gpu pairing could matter
I don't know for sure how well AMD GPU's perform FPS-wise, all I know is generally people seem to have issues with anything earlier than Polaris. I believe you can flash Fury/ X GPU's as well if you want to. Ryzen is kind of a mess right now with the NPT bug mentioned in the video, with NPT enabled you get great WIndows performance but shit gaming performance. With it disabled your GPU can be fully utilized but your CPU single-thread performance is gimped, causing massive problems doing even basic tasks. Gaming on multithreaded games is fine though, loading times are the only major issue. DX9 games will have serious issues since they are mostly single-core. Also I don't think he went into enough detail but something is broken in Windows, it only recognizes one core unless you disable a CPU feature called SMEP. You can disable it manually or emulate an older architecture, many people are using Penryn.

So basically if you want to build a PCI passthrough system TODAY, and want it to "just werk," I would strongly recommend Intel, even as a current Ryzen owner. No one actually know when these issues will be fixed, although AMD needs to fix them for Epyc to be successful. Ryzen works but it comes with the typical early adopter issues. For DX12/Vulkan games it's good, DX11 it's ok and DX9 it's shit. Windows will also run like shit, so if you use GPU-accelerated workloads in a VM like video editing or rendering I would strongly advise either purchasing Intel or waiting for Ryzen to be fixed.
>>
>>61251766
Also wanted to add on, the NPT bug is very old, it's not a Ryzen specific issue. FX CPU's have the same problem, it just never received any widespread attention since very few people tried to use GPU passthrough on FX CPU's.
>>
>>61251766
Yeah thats why I usually wait until a generation of cpus is about to become 2nd gen before buying in, by then people know which team won the generation, and drivers are worked out

I hate paying the premium to be an early adopter only to get fucked waiting for ___ update
>>
>>61247828
I managed to get it working by using AC97 + ALSA plugin and disabling HDMI audio in windows because that was giving me shit and causing distortion for some reason.
Can't pick up any distortion whatsoever now, mic works as well.
>>
>>61251023
>You'd have to be retarded if you actually want to play graphically intensive games not natively.
The performance loss is negligible, I am not going to notice a small single digit fps difference. Handles 4k and VR workloads for me just fine.
>>
I just set up a VM to test this and I want to reply to some falsehoods in the thread. First off everything works fine still, there are some extra steps. I used windows 10 (education edition) as the guest, most recent nvidia drivers. Host is arch, GTX 1080 and i7 4770K. The 4770K is both multiplier unlocked and has vt-d, you can confirm on arc.

Don't forget the completely and totally gimped "overclocking" on pascal. All cards hit a wall depending on the model well before you even reach frequency when silicon lottery would matter.
Encrypted bios means you can't get past their low as fuck locked in voltage and when you hard mod your card to get around the lock GPU Boost will reduce performance of the card, sometimes below stock.
This doesn't get in the way of normies because they don't know anything, and it doesn't get in the way of LN2 competitions because of how conductive the silicon gets at those temperatures. Except, you know, when it does get in the way companies like Galax will make a one run special edition of the card (1060 HOF) that can get around GPU boost's fuckery and the voltage locks but nvidia wont let them sell it to the public.
This ONLY fucks the people that want to push the card as far as they can for 24/7 use. Can't have people buying 1070s to push monitors that they "should" be buying 1080s for!
