Had tried these two:
>https://www.aliexpress.com/item/FiiO-M3-Music-player/32584812322.html
Being spoiled by Clip+ for 8 years, the UI and shuffle playback of those two feels horrible compared to it.

I need something to everyday life. Good battery life, good design, can read all my flac and sacd
>>
I was in need of a player and already ordered Fiio x3 before I found this thread. Waiting it to be shipped now. Did I fuck up or is it decent one?

Is the Sansa Clip Plus worth the 50-60 bucks price tag considering the newer stuff you can get for that price?

I think it might be a cheaper option to look for the other players that support rockbox because it will be easier to find a cheap old one. or get a chink player. the clip+ is good, but I don't think any of the other supported players (unless they're ancient, are any worse).

Yay, now my 4th gen ipod might get a full day of use on the 750 mAh ifixit shitter i put in it 2 years ago.
Also, what is the cheapest per gb storage option for these? i want to get rid of the 20gb HDD.

The battery increase is only on the Clip line.
Cheapest option would be SD + SD-CF adapter + CF-ZIF adapter.
May or may not work.

>FiiO X1 2nd gen
vs
>FiiO X3 2nd gen
Is there any point in getting the X3 if you don't need USB DAC? I doubt there is an audible difference between the two in terms of their integrated DAC and AMPs, but I might as well ask.

Also, does anyone else think the X3 still looks better than the new X1? The X3 is just a brick with some controls on it. It's fantastic.

I'm just worried about price/performance compared between the two. The X3 is almost double the cost and I really wonder if it's worth it.
>>
>>61242754
the x3 might have more power output, and there's the dedicated line out if you're using an external amp with it
>does anyone else think the X3 still looks better than the new X1?
Yeah, I agree. I absolutely LOVE how the 2nd gen x5 looks, I want to find a used one for like $150 and have that be my endgame
>The X3 is almost double the cost and I really wonder if it's worth it.
I doubt it, the best thing to do would be get a used fiio x1 for like $50 if you're money conscious, most of the 2nd gen x1, but for half the cost

I've got a Jelly smartphone arriving in the next few weeks, cost me $75 to back on Kickstarter. With its tiny size, micro SD slot and the fact that it runs full Android I think it'll make a amazing PMP, whether I end up using it as a phone or not

I got an old 2.8" phone too actually.
But laggy Android 2.2 on low specs and shitty audio isn't my thing, so I can't really use it for anything.
Also no physical controls, though its inline control doesn't lag like my newer phones funnily.
>>
>>61245253

The Jelly's on 7.0 and has 2gig RAM. The processor isn't specified though so I'm not sure what to expect from that

Give me 1(one) reason why you havent bought the ruizu A50 HD on massdrop https://www.massdrop.com/buy/ruizu-a50-dap
>>
I have an old V1 Sansa E200 series MP3 player that needs a new battery (which on a quick check of Amazon seems to be a minefield of batteries with no reviews or with 25% having 1 star for not functioning) and cable, the hardware doesn't support more than a 2 GB micro SD (though Rockbox does if you use a separate device to transfer the music), and it needs to be taken apart for cleaning every ~2 years now due to the scroll wheel. Would I be better off just replacing it at this point?

Why hasn't someone crowdfunded a badass open source PMP project? The components have to be cheap as fuck now and you could probably even build it to run Rockbox natively without too much issue. Both the hardware and software are no issue, so all one would really have to provide is a compelling design…
>>
>>61233713
What MP3 players are people even going with now days that the Clip has been discontinued? Is it just Chinese shit and used Clips/iPods?

>>
>>61246991
Ah yes I actually knew about that one.
>>
Hi /g/, since my Android phone's preamp sucks, would using a Fiio X3 as a DAC for it improve sound quality and volume? I would also use the X3 as a standalone PMP, but it would be great if I could use it to listen to stuff from Spotify and Youtube decently, expecially now that I'm not going to be around home for a couple months.
>>
>>61246931

No idea. Repairing ipods should be no problem for the average /g/entooman, no idea about the sansa clips but I think they're repairable too.

From a review:
>Slow and Clunky Performance - The player takes around 12 seconds to start up. When browsing files for the first time, there is a delay while the player loads the contents of each folder. The delay varies depending on how many songs are in each folder. I sort my music by genres such as Jazz, Rock, Metal, etc. My largest folder is Metal which takes a good three seconds before opening. This may not seem too bad, but consider that this delay will occur every time you turn the player on.
>Intro Cut Offs and No Gapless Playback - This is the most severe flaw in my opinion. Every single song has the first second cut off. This is the same as skipping the first second of each song. Gapless playback is also absent which means an additional half second delay between songs. A lot of the albums I listen to have songs that transition seamlessly into the next. This immersion is completely destroyed because of the delay and initial cut off.
https://www.reddit.com/r/headphones/comments/4c2u3a/the_xduoo_x3_dap_now_has_a_fully_functional/

So I ended up with a Walkman E394.
It's clearly a budget model and feels like a plasticy piece of shit in the hand, but the DAC is remarkably good for how it feels. Barren feature set, but as a simple little hunk of plastic to play music it does the job. Not sure I could ever recommend the thing, certainly not at the RRP it demands here in Australia, but it does the job.
>>
>>61245641
half the price and the only obvious thing it's missing is bluetooth far as I can tell.

>>61246966
it's not, you control it with the dial and it has physical buttons on the side
>>
>>61249714
I've got an A series one and it's pretty nice. I looked at the E series and the low memory and lack of support of microsd and FLAC turned me off. Looks like its got great battery life compared to everything else
>>
>>61254251
Because of the local market being basically dead I didn't really have any nicer choices. It feels a bit cheap for anything with the Sony name on it or a Walkman logo on the back but in terms of audio quality there's really not much to complain about. Good simple little player but it's overpriced. And yeah, a supposed 30 straight hours of playback is pretty damn nice.
>>
I'm looking for a portable music player <250$ with nice controls (buttons, knobs, wheel), expandable storage and a decent design and ui.
Should I buy and fix an iPod video or should I just get an fiio x1 (1st or 2nd gen)? Is there anything else?
>>
>>61255641
Not sure what prices are like in the US but I think there's a semi-premium Walkman that fits that bill. Not sure about the expandable storage, though.

here is some good cheap chink shit
>>61232790

since these threads are fairly new, we need to collect a lot more info to build a semi-consensus about players which we can then put in a wiki or image or something. currently we also don't a have a bunch of hands-on knowledge, so we'll have to work with posted info and hearsay which might or might not be right, particularly with chink shit, you can't trust descriptions completely.

personally I see PMPs (mainly DAPs and excluding phones for now) can be placed into 3 categories which can be useful for us to use:

>old players (any price)
generally 3+ years old, from ancient shit to things that recently went out of fashion. this will probably be centered around rocbox but can also include old players people still like for whatever reason that are dependent on their own software, like zune. the only prerequisite to recommendation should be good value and decent enough functionality. I don't think it's worth recommending 128mb players or anything, though linking info can't hurt for people who just happen to have them. at some point mod info for things like batteries would be good as well.

>recent cheap players ($10-70)
this will mostly be chink shit, since they seem to be the only ones making tiny cheap DAPs anymore. since there are so many, this should be focused on finding the good ones in the sea of crap, and definitively stating the features and things like build. to many it's worth paying more for what's basically an x02 with a nicer case and extra buttons or slightly nicer UI.

continued:

>expensive modern players ($80-1k+)
I've noticed at this point, most players start to put features, size, and battery life on the back end of priority and start focusing on better DACs and AMPs, as well as audiophile meme format support (not filetypes since most cheap players support them all too) like DSD, 24-bit 192khz, balanced out, line/digital out etc. at what point a player reaches the point of being pointless in terms of what's audibly enjoyable is up to each person.

>phone accessories (maybe)
for those who want to stick with phones, ways to make them sound better and/or clean up the sound, add power, etc. this would include external amps, dacs, combos, both battery and phone powered. also software where applicable.

Personally I think wireless aka bluetooth should be ignored for now. people who want DAPs usually care enough about quality to not want the compression of bluetooth. though apt-x capable stuff might be ok. I just worry about discussion being dominated by phonefags who only case about beats and bose bluetooth shit and subscription services.

Finally, it should be made clear that many things are better suited to /hpg/ or /csg/, this thread shouldn't turn into headphone recs or chink IEM discussion only.

sorry for longposting

I think it basically replaces the scrolling wheel the old ipod used and some more expensive modern player use. you select things and go back/forwards in menus by either clicking the wheel or using a side button.

>>61261271
there are headphones (though not many) that can be placed into the "earspeakers" category, meaning they're for personal use on the head but make a point of not sealing like most headphones do. k1000 and floats are in this category as well. I've never used them but I've heard it's like listening to stax and speakers somehow combined, though iirc the sense of bass impact is usually sacrificed for more "lifelike" highs and mids.
>>
What happened to the Ruizu X02 on Amazon? It's unavailable. I'm still using my 6G iPod Classic + 6G Nano but a small/cheap player with memory cards I can swap sounds sick.

Yea I have a similar device, Tascam DR-05. It's pretty good but would be a bit too bulky for using as an mp3 player.
>>
>>61261389
Yea it seems the only reason tiny earphones can deliver bass at all is because they're very deep in your ear channel, so I can't imagine your pic related giving much bass.

The wheel is actually not a very good way to control the player I think.
A touchpad, that allows gestures like a touchscreen would be nice. Or just a touchscreen. It makes scrolling through lists easier.

>earspeakers

>>61261411
Mod your classic.
>>
>>61261457
it's the same problem earbuds have, when you don't have a tight seal you usually have to design the cups and tuning differently to deliver that bass. it's no easy task and even on open headphones which can have much bigger drivers it's a challenge, which is why many open headphones have a "bass light" character, it's the perception of the loss of bass pressure that comes with bassy closed headphones. when you get down to the size of buds it becomes near impossible to create the kind of bass an IEM does, because since an IEM seals with your ear canal it effectively becomes a single tube from driver to ear drum.

I hear it has very short battery life. that said you won't get a dual-microsd player for cheaper.

it should be noted that xudoo just released what looks like a successor to that player which seems generally better in every way.

https://www.aliexpress.com/item/2016-Newest-XDUOO-X10-Portable-High-Resolution-Lossless-DSD-Music-Player-DAP-Support-Optical-Output-MP3/32770919448.html
>>
>>61261308
use a desktop player which supports tag editing, I think there is even software just for that, so you can do it in bulk. the quickest way would be by album or playlist.

>>61261490
I think most people looking for DAPs want to move away from a touchscreen, otherwise they would just use a phone. I think a touch screen can draw a lot from the battery as well compared to buttons. to compensate many cheap touch players I've seen have slow processors which means the touch experience is usually laggy. also touch screens have to be looked at. some portable players with good button placement can be controlled in the pocket when you get used to it. also that new ruizu is one of the only players I've seen that supports inline mic controls for phones.
>>
>>61261674
I meant touch + buttons. Buttons are a given.
The screen will be off most of the time and the touch panel doesn't draw much power.
Fact is, navigating a long ass list with wheels sucks, especially if it's a touch wheel or some non-feedback control. Some fw (like Apple's) has some form of fast scrolling to help, but chink DAPs don't.
>>
>>61261568
>I hear it has very short battery life
Someone on head-fi says:
"My longest recorded time of using RB with a full charge and external amp was 14 hours"
14 hours would be OK, I guess this is flac, I wonder if mp3 without external amp would be better or worse in comparison.
Someone else:
"At 10 hours and 45 minutes my X3 run in Rockbox mode finally shut down. It's now on the AC wall wart charger in xDuoo v1.1 mode.

So as far as battery life under Rockbox goes... it's as good as if not a tiny bit better than the stock firmware. Realistically too close to call though."

so.. not much improvement in battery life from using rockbox it seems.

Is there any way to mod the ipod nano 6G (OPs pic) to have bigger storage or even something similar to rockbox? Google tells me that nobody's ever even tried to mod it and there's no Rockbox support, but no other pmp can be used as a comfy watch/pmp hybrid.

Literally any smart watch (unless you need a jack)

And yes, you can directly connected bt headphones to such a watch. Only problem is no modding and battery life. Maybe a good compliment to a heavier music player?
>>

I probably forgot to specify that I need the headphone jack as I don't want to shell out for bt headphones and also have to charge them, which is why I don't really want a smartwatch (one of the reasons, anyway).
The problem is really just size, there aren't any pmp's that can fit on a wristband quite like the nano can (at least that I've found).

So what advantages (for sound quality, not battery or something) do sub $200 PMPs have compared to your average smartphone? Are they able to drive higher impedance stuff? I'm liking some of these, but i don't really know what actual advantages there are other than meme labels like High resolution.
>>
>>61270216
They are small and have physical controls and people like them.
Some also have good amps or just powerful output. Clip Zip can drive a HD600.
Chink $200 players would blow phones the fuck out anyway, for that price you're already getting very good DACs and amp system.

Thanks for the help!
I read the guide in the OP and he bought a 100$ SSD there. Why would I need an SSD for a music player? I only need speed for the codecs, memory access shouldn't really matter, no?

Was surprised to find out that getting this one
https://www.iflash.xyz/store/iflash-cf/
or the 40$ x4 SD card variant will actually cost more for the same amount of memory. It would even be more if I get a 128GB CF or 128GB SD.

Am I doing wrong research here or SSDs actually cost less than older flash memory variants? In that case, a recommendation for a 128GB SSD that will fit an Ipod will be nice.

iFlash are overpriced. It's the only thing that does direct SD->ATA however.

If you want to go cheap, CF-ZIF adapter is $3, SD-CF $4-10, then add a SD of your choice.

New to this thread, grabbed this because it's cheaper than anywhere I've seen and I need a player that has good storage and physical buttons. Will this be better than my (now broken) SD card modded/rockboxed ipod or am I better off just getting another gen 5 and modding again since I already have the 256gb SD card

What do you use to listen to your music when you're on the go?

I've been using my faithful Zen Nano Plus for 10-11 years now, it still works but the screen is fucked, i can't add new music, and if i add a little preassure on it it dies because of loose parts so, i can't have it in my pocket. I feel it's time to retire it and upgrade.

Are MP3 players still a thing? Or is it MP4 now? I've been out of the loop for too long. Or does everyone just use their phones?
>>
>>61280112
Depending on where you live getting a good MP3 player can be nearly impossible. It basically is in Australia, according to a few anons complaining in previous threads. Seems a touch more alive in the US but still not great.
>>
>>61280138
Just buy off of American amazon?
>>
>>61280145
I probably should've qualified that with 'locally'. It's a solid option but a pain in the ass that really doesn't need to be there.
>>
>>61280138
Why though? Is MP3 outdated?
I'm in Norway, i have no idea how hard it is to get MP3 players. Why would i want MP3 if it is outdated?
>>
My sansa clip+ isn't holding a charge well anymore. Is the clip sport a good beater device? I will miss rockbox but I don't absolutely need it
>>
>>61280168
'MP3 player' is functionally a generic name for a portable music player. And most people just use their phones.
>>
>>61267957
Should've spent 1 min to learn how the new Nano works, it's pretty damn good and the buttons have a lot of functions for pocket operation.
But yeah, I took full advantage of the recall and got like 7 of the fuckers. Nice profit indeed.
>>
>>61280180
So what should i use if i don't want to use my phone?
>>
>>61280207
Sony and Apple music players are great if you want a good stock experience.

Despite all the posts shilling about Chink players, do not get them.
>>
>>61280236
There are many people who have nothing but good things to say about many chinese audio players, why don't you like them?
>>
>>61280256
>There are many people who have nothing but good things to say
That's why, we have a lot of people working at stores like Gearbest and Aliexpress doing reviews and marketing on here, especially on /ctg/.
I bought a few chink devices, the interfaces are garbage, the batteries barely last more than 1-2 years and the overall quality isn't up to scratch.
Only get these chink devices if you are really stingy or don't really have a lot of money.

I personally are really faithful to Sony players, they're not the best but there's just something special about them.
>>
>>61261308
mp3tag is free software that lets you do that
It's a bit of a pain to use cause I think it's meant for editing multiple files at once, but it works well enough. It's on Linux, too.

Chinks cost a few bucks a day, if they can afford to give products to Youtubers with 500 views, they can afford to market on here with more than 30k daily visitors.

And 6 months is nothing in terms of product ownership.
>>
>>61245537
Wow I had one of those. Sweet little guy until it was stolen. But yes, you gotta upgrade. You can stay with a Sansa if you want but there's so much to choose from, and even a cheap new clip is a better investment than an unknown new battery.
>>
>>61280256
I would never buy another Chinese MP3 player. I pissed away a bit of money on a few over a period of couple years in the mid 2000s before finally realizing that I could have just bought a decent one to begin with and actually had it last.

>>61280410
>I owned X for half a year without problems
That's absolutely meaningless when it comes to durability, especially when you didn't even say how much you've actually used it. All that tells me is that you didn't get a lemon.
>>
>>61247161
I had three of those in high school none ever lasted more than than six months before the ROM corrupted itself beyond repair. I took good care of my shit too, still have my Creative Zen Stone+ from ten years ago and it still works great too.
>>
>>61280177
I've had my clip sport for around 2 years now. survived getting run over by a car twice with minor scraches. Shit is old nokia level durable. Its alright as far as performance goes. A little worse audio quality than the sansa because lol can't hear shit when you're running.

Pretty good. Unfortunately a lot of them were neglected and suffered battery corrosion problems. The Lithium models are slowly rotting away too and replacements are expensive.

Try to find one that takes regular Dry Cells like AA or AAAs. They still last amazingly long on a single charge.
>>
>>61281139
That's annoying, but thanks for letting me know. It also seems difficult to find a player that still has its remote if a quick ebay search is anything to go by, which is unfortunate. They kind of complete the aesthetic in my opinion and if I get one, I'd like to have the remote with it.

Looking for something that lets me browse by folder and also has like 128GB of space (whether this means built-in or through an SD/microSD doesn't matter to me). I have a large music collection and I'm getting tired of having to switch out albums all the time on my iphone. Also obviously I'd like something that's relatively cheap but it's okay if it costs a little extra as long as the price is worth it

I have a mobiblu Boxon. I dont use it anymore because of the battery spends more time charging than playin music.

It had 2 GB of memory (I dont think it was 4) but for its time it was so awesome. The only usability drawback was for loooooooooong tracks. if you wanted to get to a distant point on your track, you had to fast forward and it was like doing so like minute for every 10 seconds. so it was a PITA to get to 10+ minutes ahead.
I still have it, I just dont want to throw it away.

I have around 350gb of flac files and would like a player with enough capacity for all of it without encoding into a smaller file format such as ogg. Meh I had MD and spent a fortune at the time on it. It was and still is shit. As usual the best and worst of Sony condensed in one product.

DAT was the true patrician format back in the day. I had one at high school that I recorded vinyl and MP3 rips to. Fuck I wish portable DAT did 24/48 back in the day. But today is practically useless as a CD-R today.

Casette is the true Retro format and professional Sony that techmoan has is the ducks guts. I almost bought one back in the day and will be buying one soon.

2nd week of using this badboy and it's incredible. Was using a Ruizu before but got higher impedance IEMS so I wanted a new pmp and this thing is great. Batter has only gone to half and I've been using it regularly in several hour bursts every single day. Supports FLAC and wav unsure of 24 bit but 16 bit for sure. Physical buttons on the side are that sweet cherry on top. Plus it's tiny. Plenue would buy again.

Many chink DAPs are actually very similar, in many ways. Like how most of them use the same SoC and, to an extent, the software.

apple pushing alac over flac was a monumental corporate ass fuck

the sole reasons why normies dont do lossless to this day
>>
>>61290142
I disagree.

I know .alac is fucking retarded. But the real reason normies don't want lossless is because they just don't give a shit. Go up to anyone and tell them you could listen to your favorite music in "higher resolution" and they'll just sort of ignore you.
>>
>>61289573
It's worth mentioning that the dx80's battery can't be easily serviced or replaced. So unlike the dx50 you can't just switch and be good to go if it stops holding its charge as well

Well, it was the wisest choice. A lossless codec was needed, and FLAC, even if it's open source, could always be patent challenged.
