LineageOS isn't the only custom ROM genius. Bugs are mostly device specific and there are weekly or nightly updates. Five year support cycle? It's not like custom ROM developers are a tech company. And guess what? You can choose between hundreds of other custom ROMs. Find me an iPhone which can match Snapdragon 625s in terms of battery life. Oh, and by the way, Magisk exists.

SafetyNet is triggered when you have root. LineageOS doesn't have root by default. You have to flash SuperSU or Magisk yourself. Magisk has s hide feature do you can pass SafetyNet and use Snapchat/Netflix/whatever

Topkek, I'm running lineageOS on a Nexus 6P and I'm getting improved battery life compared to stock. Muh Snapchat and Netflix both work too.

Root is on an app-by-app basis, so most apps won't even notice you have it. I don't even need Magisk.

My Samsung™ Galaxy S7 Edge 32GB Black Onyx Edition™ with Samsung TouchWiz™ Home does not have this problem.

Not sure about "tons of bugs". I only have one with my phone, although admittedly it's pretty significant: Google Maps continually fails to get GPS lock. The workaround is to open a different GPS app for ~30 seconds until it gets a successful lock, then open Maps.

Tried a totally clean install, which didn't help. Stock ROM doesn't have this issue but there hasn't been a single LineageOS commit that even mentions GPS in months.

How difficult is it to port Lineage? What are the requirements both technically and knowledgeably?

I figure I need to at least understand a little about the Linux kernel, maybe some ARM asm, Java, a device that can boot into fastboot and recovery already would help, but is there anything else? The device I have already runs android but I don't think the source code for the drivers and all that are open.

Meizu Pro 5. Installed a somewhat old version of RR, based on Marshmellow. Flashed gapps and Magisk 13 after the ROM and everything seems to work fine except the fingerprint scanner.
