God damn this thing runs hot. I don't like maintaining water cooling so I have about 400 dollars of fans in my case. Everything runs chilly cool, no VRM overheat issues (peaks 73C on 240W), the temp inside the case is 27C...

...but the CPU package rides all the way up to 100C and starts throttling slightly (3.9~4 GHz instead of 4). The actual heatsink is comfortable to touch but the CPU reaches ridiculous temperatures. This would be even worse on an AIO because on air I'm also cooling down all the components near the CPU. Stock settings, no OC, no AVX offset. God damn.

The funny thing is it actually does perform well at stock, similarly to a stock 7700K for most purposes and smashing apart a R7 1800X even when thermal-throttled when doing multicore workloads. I couldn't get it to throttle unless I ran P95 AVX with small FFT; other benchmarks were closer to 80C.

Ryzen 8core is more efficient, can run air cooled and you can probably save $150 on motherboard (and $100 on that cooling).

Not willing to pay the steep rise in price and power consumption/heat for the modest bit of extra performance.
>>
>>61238163
Its still accounting frequency, so its not an IPC graph. SLX is probably getting advantage in Multithread due to the greater frequency, but that is all it takes, the bigger L2 is just a mark of a rebadged xeon architecture that will mostly benefit only enterprise apps like databases.
>>
>>61237246
It's like they accidently set the all core turbo to a strict 4ghz and let the chips fly with that. tt's won their performance benchmarks but for what, these are competing against the coming breadtrippers and will win in gaming and photoshop really.

If they had more resonable turbo states (4.5ghz on one core is probably fine) they could probbaly maintain top performance accross most things without this housefire debacle.
>>
>>61238483
TR probably will not win in gaming unless the 2:1 ratio on infiniyty fabric means anything.

Frequency alone SKX still tops TR, but how much?

De8auber updated the video;
Some people are not reaching overtemperatures on vrm because the BIOS actually limit current

If you remove the current cap performance scales but also throttle

If you stick with "intel approved current limit" games and benchmarks are poor

Jesus christ. The ride never ends. And we're not even seeing the mess the 12-18 core models are going to create yet. Except X299v2 lol.

Because socket 2066 and Skylake-E are literal hot garbage.

It's easily Intel's worst desktop product in a decade of lackluster releases.

I killed a 3970X by overclocking and got it replaced without that protection plan (which was new at the time).

I was considering it, because the extra cores would actually help with my work pipeline. But $1k is a bit steep and on top of that I'd have to replace almost everything in my rig to accommodate it. I'll probably go with the Ryzen tbqh.
>>
>>61242102
get threadripper when it comes out, 16 cores for the price of intel's 10 core, performance is equivalent to two 1800X slapped together
>>
>>61242128
I'm still amazed at how Epyc and Threadripper scale their cores so well compared to Intel.
>>
>>61242147
It boils down to the way AMD designed it, intel is using basically the same stuff for a long time now, only with minor tweaks
>>
>>61242128
yeah, I'll keep an eye on it
>>
>>61242102
1700 is a great deal desu, you can't go wrong with that. If you want even more cores, then by all means wait for TR. You might see 16 cores for $650-$750 if the Epyc slides are of indication.

I'm looking at the i9-7900x and 16-core Threadripper for building a new workstation.

TR will almost certainly be a better value but I'm a little concerned about single threaded performance compared to the i9. Also the x399 mobos seem a tad half-assed compared to x299 (see Asus Zenith Extreme vs Rampage VI Extreme for example) but that's probably just superficial for the most part.
>>
>>61242672
just get the 6950X and overclock it if you're worried about single threaded performance, the 7900X is basically the same thing but it gets way hotter
>>
Low availability. Errata (there's a reason AVX-512 has been so many years coming). Virtually mandatory delidding for a high-watt, fairly large $1000 CPU they couldn't be bothered to spend another $50 of indium and gold on when AMD does it across their entire line just fine. Chipset clusterfucks due to surprised partners. RAID DRM. Threadripper is faster, cooler, and cheaper.

It's a perfect example of why Intel needs competition from AMD.
>>
>>61242672
>Also the x399 mobos seem a tad half-assed compared to x299
Which is funny because the x299 boards are incredibly half-assed. No TB and awwful VRM heatsinks for a start.

Who here really takes Prime95 seriously? Because I never did. OCCT maybe (which also is like Furmark).
>>
>>61244270
Prime95 has been a stress testing staple for years. How convinent that it suddenly becomes worthless as soon as Intel platforms melt into slag when they use it.
>>
>>61232508
epyc has 4 dies either cut down or are fucked to make that 16 core part, meanwhile threadripper for 16 will need two fully functional dies, with binning could cost up to 1000$
>>
>>61244270
Yeah, who takes utilizing the CPU fully seriously! Nobody should need more than 60% utilization anyway!
