Good luck, overclock it at least to 4.0GHz, your cpu will last 2 more years.
God damn this thing runs hot. I don't like maintaining water cooling so I have about 400 dollars of fans in my case. Everything runs chilly cool, no VRM overheat issues (peaks 73C on 240W), the temp inside the case is 27C...
...but the CPU package rides all the way up to 100C and starts throttling slightly (3.9~4 GHz instead of 4). The actual heatsink is comfortable to touch but the CPU reaches ridiculous temperatures. This would be even worse on an AIO because on air I'm also cooling down all the components near the CPU. Stock settings, no OC, no AVX offset. God damn.

Ryzen 8core is more efficient, can run air cooled and you can probably save $150 on motherboard (and $100 on that cooling).
Not willing to pay the steep rise in price and power consumption/heat for the modest bit of extra performance.
>>61238163
Its still accounting frequency, so its not an IPC graph. SLX is probably getting advantage in Multithread due to the greater frequency, but that is all it takes, the bigger L2 is just a mark of a rebadged xeon architecture that will mostly benefit only enterprise apps like databases.
>>61237246
It's like they accidently set the all core turbo to a strict 4ghz and let the chips fly with that. tt's won their performance benchmarks but for what, these are competing against the coming breadtrippers and will win in gaming and photoshop really.
If they had more resonable turbo states (4.5ghz on one core is probably fine) they could probbaly maintain top performance accross most things without this housefire debacle.

Must be
I'm looking at the i9-7900x and 16-core Threadripper for building a new workstation.
TR will almost certainly be a better value but I'm a little concerned about single threaded performance compared to the i9. Also the x399 mobos seem a tad half-assed compared to x299 (see Asus Zenith Extreme vs Rampage VI Extreme for example) but that's probably just superficial for the most part.
>>61242672
just get the 6950X and overclock it if you're worried about single threaded performance, the 7900X is basically the same thing but it gets way hotter
Low availability. Errata (there's a reason AVX-512 has been so many years coming). Virtually mandatory delidding for a high-watt, fairly large $1000 CPU they couldn't be bothered to spend another $50 of indium and gold on when AMD does it across their entire line just fine. Chipset clusterfucks due to surprised partners. RAID DRM. Threadripper is faster, cooler, and cheaper.
It's a perfect example of why Intel needs competition from AMD.
