If you want help:
>Assemble your parts list
https://pcpartpicker.com/
>State the budget for your build (and country if not the USA).
>List games/software you use often, as well as your monitor resolution + refresh rate.
>Clarify your goal for build improvements: lower price or improved specs?
How to assemble a PC, select components & more (kind of outdated)
https://wiki.installgentoo.com/index.php?title=Build_a_PC

CPUs:
>G4560 - Budget builds (<$500)
>R5 1500x - Good but up to 1600 if you can
>R5 1600 - Best value for higher fps gaming / mixed usage; 1600x if you want higher stock clocks
>i7 7700k - only for 144hz
>R7/Xeon/Threadripper - Compute/Multitask/mixed use; Not required for just gaming

GPUs:
Coin miners have driven price up and stock down, waiting to buy a GPU might be wiser
>Integrated CPU Graphics - Desktop stuff and very light games
>GTX 1050(Ti) - Lower end budget cards, drop settings on newer games, RX560 beaten by both
>RX570 - 1080p@60~hz maxed, running most maxed older games at 100~Hz
>RX580 and GTX1060 6GB - 1080p@80hz maxed, 1440p@60hz at lower settings; RX580 better in newer games
>GTX 1070 - 1080p@130hz /1440p@60hz at high
>GTX 1080 - 1080p@144hz / 1440p@60hz maxed, 4k@60hz in a few games; Probably the highest end card you need for 1080p/1440p
>GTX 1080Ti - 1440p@144hz and 4k@60hz maxed/high in many games

RAM:
>Check your Mobo QVL before buying any RAM
>Ryzen CPUs benefits from high speed RAM

General:
ALWAYS LOOK AT PRODUCT REVIEWS!
Always consider an SSD. Try buying a large SSD for what you'd pay for your SSD+HDD combined, and add a HDD later
NVMe SSDs aren't for a faster OS boot, they're for productivity/scratch disk/VMs. NVMe and M.2 are not the same thing, M.2 is a form factor.
The Ryzen lineup comes with exceptionally good stock coolers. (with the exception of the 1600X) consider using them over any sub 35USD cooler.

Do I even need the 3rd party cooler if I don't intend to do heavy overclocking right off the bat?

I will need to find some wireless network-card as well. Any suggestions?
>>
>>61214011
Yes, yes you do. Also the past clearly states Ryzen benefits from faster memory. Try 3000 or even 3200Mhz, Ryzen was so much worse than Intel alternatives when reviewed on broken mobos that couldn't hit 3ghz.
In my opinion any cheap tp-link card will do and then if you need better range you can start toying with adding better antennas.
>>
what cpu is a direct upgrade from the G4560? i was looking at buying an i5 with the same socket but its 250 bucks not including postage, then i'd need an aftermarket cooler because intel housefire

Do you even lurk bro? The fucking op says not to buy i5's.
If all you do is gaming get a 1600 since it also scales much better with ram, considering you picked 3400mhz ram for some reason.
500gb ssd is fine if you can afford it, otherwise unnecessary.
With the money you save on a smaller ssd and the CPU you can afford to upgrade to a 1080 ti if you want.

I haven't followed PSU's much recently but i thought i read a while ago that seasonic weren't that good. Not sure there
>>
>>61214530
I'm this guy >>61214685

Looking more at the build i'm really not sure if you're trolling. In any case i fixed it so other people might find it useful.

https://pcpartpicker.com/list/84N3JV

I changed the PSU to a well known brand, its 100 less watts but you didn't need them anyway, and its a bit cheaper.

I got slightly slower ram because most times ram can't even get to 3400, so i saved money there.

I got a 250gb ssd and saved money there, got a ryzen 1600 and motherboard(i dont know shit about motherboards so i dont know how good this one is) and while the price for the motherboard on your own list wasnt included i'm sure that saved you money.

And i upgraded to a 1080 ti.
All this for 30 more dollars.

Personally i think the case you picked looks like shit but to each his own.
>>
>>61214742
Why 4.0 to 3.2 on the CPU? I thought most games don't take advantage of loadsacores. Hope this isn't brandwars memes.

I have an FX 6300 and a gigabyte GA-78LMT.
Is there anything I can replace this with for £200 or below?
I play games occasionally and have a r9 290x gpu which in happy with.

Main problem is my ssd cannot run at full speed on this motherboards sata ports :(

>>
>>61215106
And no, that is not the main problem. It's the fact that mobo can't run FX-6300@stock without throttling.
Don't believe rated speeds, and I believe you don't mean pcie ssd or m2, because former is obviously fixable.
>>
>>61214742
no need for a liquid cooling since ryzen won't go over 4.0 anyway and that can be achieved on 30$ air cooler.
psu is still an overkill, this won't go over 500w.
also he probably (as in 99%) doesn't need x370 mobo. b350 would be enough.

i see you like to waste people's money.

To be honest, unless you're AMD fanatic and want to stay with Piledriver cpu, there is no point buying better AM3+ board at this point, simply because those better boards (Asus 990FX Sabertooth R2.0, Gigabyte 990FXA-UD7 and -UD3 rev 4) are fairly expensive even on the used market.

With Sandy Bridge chips (on LGA1155: 2500k, 2600k or 2700k) you will get 40% better single threaded performance clock-for-clock compared to your Piledriver FX-6300 and since used 2500k can be had for 50 bucks (or euros) today, I'd go for it, if you want fairly cheap upgrade.
>>
If im using an i5-4670 (non K) and my friend is giving me i5-4690K does it work with my Z87 motherboard since they're both LGA 1150?

intel 750 at 800gb for the same price as that 960 pro 1tb

>>61215322
>>61215353

yeah and try getting some new ram ddr3 2400ish at cl 11ish and if you're overclocking which is also dependent on your psu
>>
>>61214853
Because the price difference between the 6700k and the 1600 make the lower clock worth the money you save, that money can be spent on a better GPU which will impact your performance much more than the CPU.
Makes sense?
>>
>>61215456
Either R7 or Intel HEDT.

>>61214424

Replying to guy in previous thread.
I've been thinking more about it and while maybe buying a setup that will allow me play current games at 144hz 1440p will not reach the same level in the future, the base hardware will still be good enough to get 60+ fps, so while its overkill for that purpose now, and it's not super efficient, it's still going to be worth it after all.

Intel is literally recommending a water cooler as the minimum you should use. So yeah, you need a good cooler just to run them at stock, a great one if you actually want to overclock. And you might need a fan for the motherboard VRMs as well, in the latter case.

You might be able to get close to 4GHz out of an i9 on an NH-D15 with an aggressive fan curve, but even AIOs start tapping out once you go above that. You need custom water to even think about the kind of frequencies that Haswell-E could do on air (and Broadwell-E with a high end AIO).

Before you purchase your Ram and motherboard and all that go onto their respective websites and check if everything is compatible in the QVL. Even if partpicker says it's compatible some parts can hamper eachother and only cause it to use half its capacity

Nnno. Either it won't work at all, or it'll work at reduced frequency. The capacity will be unaffected.

I'm getting a good price on the https://www.msi.com/Graphics-card/GeForce-GTX-1080-ARMOR-8G-OC.html, is it just as good as other 1080's? Also it says it has both a 6-pin and 8-pin power connector, could I just use the 6 pin? I might not have a valid 8 pin cable and replacing my PSU would be a pain.
>>
https://ca.pcpartpicker.com/list/7BYnVY

So is this build any good? I'm from Canada and all the mid range gpu's are out of stock so I decided go for a cheap one until I can find a decent one. My budget is around 1300-1500 cad dollars.

Because 8-pin connector wouldn't be able to provide sufficient power by itself? It's a 250W card, you need both connectors to provide that.
>>

it's not the ti, the 1080 is only 180W (and other variants seem to only have the 8pin).

I'd scrap the noctua for a Cryorig H7 Quad Lumi, based purely on looks and cooling performance.
And I think you're spending too much for a mediocre case. At least get something with a window. PCs are becoming centerpieces and it saddens me to see people making ugly box PCs you want to shove in a cabinet so you don't have to look at it.
As to the build buying a cheap GPU until good ones are in stock is what everyone's doing.
>>
>>61215769
Yeah, I'm a little on the fence about that one. Might just skip the cooler for now, and see how it goes.

I personally am going with a white/blue Corsair Carbide series Spec Alpha case for my own build.

I have an eclipse p400s and it's fantastic.
I do end up popping the front cover off if I'm running something demanding to allow the airflow, but the front cover has quick release clips anyway so I presume it's designed to have that option if you need to.
>>
>>61216872
I love how easy maintenance is in the P400. Pop off the filters every week or so and clean them. You don't even have to unscrew any side panel to get to them. I am not sure how the NZXT 340 is like.
>>
>>61216990
Yeah for sure, you can tell they put alot of thought into every part of it, the quality is exceptional too.
>>
>>61216869
Because it was barely any more expensive than a 3200MHz CL14 kit. Might as well have plenty of headroom for future improvements.

I'm so indecisive right now. Would it be worth making a ryzen 1600 build or should I go with an i5-7600k build? The CPUs and there motherboards are pretty cheap at microcenter (1600 bundle is 20$ cheaper at 300) but I'm not to sure on what to buy yet. main purpose would be gaming (only triple A game would be The Witcher 3) and general internet browsing along with school work.

ryzen all the way. i5s are dead.
with 7600k you'd also need ~35$ cpu cooler, while 1600 comes with a stock one.

Ryzen benefits a LOT from faster RAM, due to the Infinity Fabric bandwidth being tied to RAM speed. And even in general, you should get the fastest RAM that's reasonably priced.

Remember to make sure that the RAM you're getting is on the motherboard's QVL list. Ryzen is kind of finicky about the RAM.
>>
>>61218987

Today's chipsets benefit more from the memory bandwidth available than they do from lower latencies/tighter timings.

It's better to buy RAM that runs at faster speeds (or greater bandwidth). In most cases, the bus speed/maximum bandwidth of the RAM in question will help determine how far you can push a CPU overclock.

Don't spend more for lower latency RAM unless you can find it for around the same prices as the higher latency variety.

Wha, that's great. I'm doing a jonsbo c2 case. SFX would free up some much needed space. It's really coming together now with a low profile GPU to allow direct airflow to the CPU/SFX. It has limited cooling since it has all side panels covered, but with the right components it'll run well. 11.7L mAtx case, pretty sick value.

I was referring to low profile cards that only come up to 1050ti series I'm afraid. (eg GTX1050 2LGT LPV1). They're half a slot wide, so if you have a bottom intake fan for example, the air can breeze past it right up to the cpu. It'd be ideal to have some space below your gfx card aswell (see pic related). Since your case is shorter, I would look into single slot cards. Few of such 1050ti's are about to launch. That's of course if 1050ti meets your needs and you can switch it up and use your 1060 elsewhere.

My build is working fine temperature wise, I didn't even need to add dual 80mm fans at the top as i feared. I originally had a 1050ti mini (which got this qhole build rolling) but it struggled a bit with my 4k display and I only have a G4620 powering the rest. Was a nice challenge tho and space was a bigger concern than money in the 1 room weekday apartment that I'm spending my nights in the next few months. CPU maxes out at about 50°C (well it's a tiny dual core) and GPU at 55°C. The 1050ti never went over 50% fan speed and 45 degrees tho. I still have it as backup, the big advantage was that I didn't need the extra power cable since it runs off the mainboard power only. It's used as a media machine for working and streaming from Prime/Netflix and playing BluRays and this kind of stuff with occasional gaming.

Yep. I played through Dark Souls III on a 780 and it never dipped below 60.
>>
>>61220291
liquid cooling is an absolute meme. If you are going to "overclock" then you better spend the money on a faster CPU/GPU rather than liquid cooling.
>>
>>61219507
Yes it should be possible as long as the SSD/HDD are actually working. You might want to check the boot priority though.
>>
>>61220244
Well I guess I wouldn't mind being able to play at 1440p even though I don't have a 1440p monitor right now.
>>
>>61217793
Default case fans are usually shit tier. Be prepared to buy aftermarket ones.
>>
what does it feel like to use a 144Hz screen
>>
>>61220365
Then I suggest you wait until you get enough money to buy the monitor and the GPU at once. Don't buy one before the other as you will not benefit and you will waste your money because technology gets cheaper with time.
>>
>>61220408
I wouldn't know because I never used one, but when I overclocked my screen from 60Hz to 75Hz the difference was immediately apparent. I imagine 144Hz would be as fluid as life :) .
>>
>>61220408
everything is extremely smooth. The first time I tested a 144Hz computer I just scrolled a webpage for 2 minutes because it felt soo differemt
>>
1060 vs 580?
>>
>>61220429
580 because more future proof and higher VRAM.
>>
>>61220419
>>61220424
I think I'll consider it for a future build then, thanks
>>
>>61220429
If you can get them at the same price, the 580 is a generally a better buy. You should look at the benchmarks for games you're going to play, though.
>>
>>61220429
>>61220456
Good luck finding a 580 though. It's gotten to the point that prebuilts with 580s in them are better value than building a 580 system.
>>
>>61220409
Okay, so should I go with the 1060 6gb then? I want to be able to play games at 1080 60fps for the next few years. I don't play AAA games that much but I will play the occasional AAA.
>>
>>61220482
Both of them and the 480 should run games at 1080p 60hz fine.
>>
>>61220482
I imagine for 1080p a 1060 will be very enough for you specially if you don't play AAA games with supah dupah graphx

Need a GPU while I wait for Vega.

There's a local store offering a 760 for a $50 special. Is that a good deal/card?

What is the optimal radiator position?
>>
>>61220520
you don't need a $70 cpu cooler, and pay for windows. I'd also get a better PSU, with higher wattage and efficiency. And you should get SSD
>>61220706
Been using one for 3 years, still can run pretty much anything. Definitely not 1080/60fps but still can do it.
>>
>>61220716
I think 2, the radiator will perform better with the colder air directly from the outside of the case
>>
>>61220291

Get an NH-D15 over liquid cooling. It's going to be cheaper and quieter.
>>
>>61220637
You don't need the cooler, Ryzen CPU's run very good with stock coolers. Also don't buy Windows, you can download a free evaluation copy from the Microsoft website and keep using it forever for free. Consider buying fans for the case though, stock case fans are usually shit.
>>
>>61220781
Wow, I've never thought of it like that
>>
>>61216383
Nobody forces you to use it.
Maybe you should
>install gentoo
instead.
>>
>>61220781
I was thinking of changing it round because of the temps of my 1080, reaching about 85 when im gaming.

I thought pure cold in through the front onto the card and into the case would cool the 1080 down, rather than it getting blasted by warm after after it passes the rad
>>
Lads I just finished building and installed windows, seemed to be going fine, now I have lost the signal on my monitor and can no longer get any output, just says no source detected, fans are still spinning and gpu is lighting up, what do
>>
>>61220941
Try using the video output directly from the motherboard. If it works then something is not right with the GPU, probably driver issue.
>>
>>61220941
Do you maybe have the cable plugged into then onboard output instead of the GPU output?
>>
>>61220978
Dont think I can do that with ryzen

I don't have access to another computer either. Currently I'm trying to do a clean install of win 7 on my hdd but for some reason I am met with this pic. I'm really stuck now that I can't even wipe my hdd as a last resort to use my new pc.
>>
>>61220905
you have to remember that your gpu will heat up the air a lot more than your cpu, and with a open air cooler all the heat will stay inside the case and go through the cpu radiator, cooling it with less efficiency
>>
>>61220726
>>61220806
How much watts should I get then? Also I want the HDD because I need the space.
>>
>>61221001
It seems to me that you have an issue with the motherboard. I mean first it doesn't detect the GPU and now it doesn't detect the drives?
>>
>>61220637
What the fuck is that memory? I've never seen it. Is it some regional stuff?
>>
>>61221024
I told you nothing about the PSU, it is fine, 500 Watts is very ok if you are running a single GPU and you are running Ryzen.
>>
>>61220801
It's also big and can block your RAM, GPU, and you can damage your CPU/mobo during transportation, unless you remove the heatsink and GPU prior to moving. Still a great cooler though, I was going to get one but decided to get a AiO, epsecially for a mid tower ATX build.

You should have a look at the QVL for your board. Especially if you're going to use >=3000Mhz RAM.

Fuck. No. Recommending the i7-7700K for anything other than specific niche usages is stupid and the RAM choice is even worse. That RAM is standard RAM for budget / office build, you want something better and faster.

Either that or different RAM. You're probably going to have easier time finding a compatible motherboard if you pick something like Corsair Vengeance(or other popular brand/model) instead.
