This is where we wait for the latest AMD graphics card which AMD will surely release in a timely manner and will definitely blow all of our minds, no questions asked, 100% guaranteed, no chance it'll fail, just you wait.

>RX delivers something slightly above 1080.
After driver optimizations and actually enabling the hardware features it has, it should easily be above a 1080 in most games. Real question is if they can price it the same as a 1080 as the die size is still quite large, and how long it will take them to get the drivers mature (If it's longer than a month or two, gg)

Still don't think we're seeing consumer Volta until Q2 2018. I doubt NVidia has any reason to rush things even if they're not using GDDR6 on their new cards.

Code that runs on GPU is basically lots of tiny simple tasks that are embarrassingly parallel.
Code that runs on CPU is a lot more complex, with lots of branching and dependencies, which makes parallelism hard.

Interesting no one ever complains when people run gaming benchmarks on titans when the official Nvidia line is Titans aren't for gaming. Titans and Quadros can play games just fine, but when the Vega FE has underwhelming gaming performance suddenly everyone starts screaming "It's not for gaming!"
>>
>>61219018
Sandbagging a GPU launch would be fucking retarded given gaming shit usually sells on hype and marketing. Killing hype is the worst thing to do for a GPU, especially when AMD hasn't had the best luck selling high end GPU's like the 390X or Fury X.
>>
>>61220012
No amount of hype or good performance will save AMD. They are too late.
Actually who the fuck cares EPYC will give them the money anyway.
>>
>>61219905
Former 780ti owner
They didn't gimp it at all
Performance remained the same.

It's just newer games were optimized for the 900 series so the 700 series fell from Grace.
My 780ti at 1,350mhz was easily beating 980s.
However, the 3gb of Vram was a bottleneck at anything above 1080p.
>>
>>61220198
I think lack of VRAM really is the biggest issue with a lot of Nvidia cards, the 980 still performs fine but only having 4GB makes it useless for 1440p nowadays. Memory was bottlenecking me hard in RE7, not even sure why the game uses so much VRAM when all the textures look blurry as fuck.

i think this is the problem. amd would have to blow nvidia out the water like they used to to get any real sales and recoup the research needed. and 2bh i dont think they could even if they wanted to. theyve given up truly competing with nvidia

better to be smart and make budget cards to go in consoles and play 90 percent of the popular pc games at 1080 60 fps because thats where the casuals/money is
>>
>>61221672
No-one buys AMD GPUs regardless. 1080 outsold the 480. Gaymurs just buy NVidia. AMD is really just wasting their time in the consumer add-in board GPU space. They should stick to embedded, consoles and workstation/prosumer.
>>
>>61221665
wouldn't need to actually own any hardware, just to read reviews

the only issue I can see is that there's no way to tell whether reviewers actually benchmark old chips or just stick them in the graphs for comparison

>>
>>61221716

>>
>>61221705
No, even shitting on nVidia from top to bottom barely helps, since Thermis outsold Evergreens. Like, no matter how good their products are, people refuse to buy Radeon.
>>
>>61221705
>theyve given up truly competing with nvidia
that's not up to them. only way to do that is to leave the industry.

they've given up chasing halo products in general because that's a terrible strategy for them. Ryzen and Polaris are evidence that it works.
>>
>>61221738
They have the 460/550. NVidia has the GT 1030 in that space now, too. They also have APUs (Raven Ridge coming soon)
>>
>>61221744
Ryzen will have great halo product that will sell fairly well, mostly because Intel is Satan himself in the eyes of many people.
>>
>>61221738
Margins are too slim to actually bother, better sell some more console chips.
>>
>>61221727
you can't reliable compare numbers from different reviewers. They use different test systems, different games, different settings, different levels or game modes, different game versions, different driver versions, different room temperatures, etc.
With modern graphics cards it also makes a huge difference if you just benchmark for 5 or for 30 minutes. Nvidia cards are really fast for about 10 minutes before they have heated up and begin throttling to stay within their power and temperature targets.

GPU testing is very unscientific.

>>
>>61212034
There are apparently major flaws in the silicon of this first production run which had to shut down and be restarted. Thats why we have this werird "frontier edition"" card. Because its too fucked to be an RX gaming card and too fucked to be a FirePRO card but they want to recoup some losses by selling something.

Thats a good sign because it means that when the problems fixed and production continues the new cards for "gaming" will perform much better. Also theres a bunch of stuff like the new Rasterization method that are not even activated yet.

Ultimate performance is a question mark but This frontier card is the absolute worst it can possibly get and its still beating a 1070 to shit and matching a stock 1080 in most cases.

That means when they make a binned "core" series vega card at 399$ to compete with the gtz 1070 it will be very competitive. Keep in mind the Crimson drivers are much more user friendly and appealing that Geforce these days. I personally had a better user experience on my gtx 470 with crimson than i currently do on my gtx 1080 with geforce If AMD offered a 1080 matched card at a better price that would be good.

Also remember Navi. The whole point of vega is to fundamentally redesign every single peice of the architecture and throw out all the old legacy bullshit of GCN that holds back the polaris cards.

Now that they have a new arch to tweak and refine they will move forward with Navi which is this new architecture scaled up the same way they scale Ryzen. They take an 8-core cpu die and then fuse 4 of them on a package to create a 32-core chip that slaps intel's shit while being more efficient both in power and economy of scale.

Take that same infinity fabric technique and apply it to a GPU. Put 4 tiny vega20 dies on an interposer and connect them in a mesh. Thats 8,000shaders of raw power in a low power envelope for a low cost of manufacture and would perform surprisingly well against even a 5,400 cuda core Volta Gpu

Heard this shit before. If there were really problems like that, the delay would be much, much longer.

You know how much money and time it would take to fix a major flaw in a produce if the flaw is in the design and not the production line once you have started production? Companies have gone out of business from this kind of stuff before. Unless you are telling me that this is a production line issue because if it is not, there would be a quarter delay minimum to redesign around a major flaw.

And then holy shit, loads of people saved $$$!

Vega is DOA.
>>
hello is vega release yet?

It's literally just a driver problem. Raja implied the hardware design was relatively easy and completed ages ago

Vega10 was taped out probably in ~november.
Yes, writing drivers is that hard.
No, really, maxwell2 was delayed for a reason too.

Is Volta a die shrink of Pascal? Nvidia managed to get 40% IPS from this one simple trick.

U wot? Pascal has 0 ILP improvements, just moar ALUs and higher clocks.
