I don't get this meme, I am currently running the latest version of Nvidia drivers and Crimson 17.6.2 on my two computers. I don't see any real advantage to Nvidia's drivers and I play many of the same games on both machines.

I spent a lot of time trying to decide between 1060 and 480 and in the end I just saw a 1060 on sale.

If the two sides can argue endlessly with none of them really being able to show that their favourite is objectively better then that means that the differences are negligible.
Otherwise the answer to which one is best would be easy to find
