You have to steer clear of TN displays.
In the specs given in product description, check if the screen is an IPS panel. If the price isn't through the roof (~200$ is alright) buy it.
I think it doesn't matter if the processor is i5 or i7, you'll have to check for the term "IPS" specifically. Other keyword for IPS display is "premium display" as Lenovo calls it
>>
>>61213135
Thank you.

Shit, looking at them online and it seems to be cheaper to buy a model with the TN and buy a IPS screen to put in myself. IPS models cost 3 times as much for some fucked up reason.

i got one with a smashed screen (maybe $110 for a new panel) for $80 recently, so if you're willing to wait a while you might be able to get one <$250. Otherwise that's not bad for a complete one. Just keep in mind the SSD in these uses some fucked up connector and will be a huge pain to replace.

Is it 1st gen Carbon with TN panel? I suggest you should search for a 2nd gen, which can have an IPS panel.

250GB Samsung 850 Evo + 2TB HDD in the laptop in place of the ODD, so the DVD is now in an external enclosure, and the chink 3.5" drive dock arrived today allowing me to mount desktop drives.

IMO, 2570p is better than x230 overall. X230 wins over 2570p with ips screen, and trackpoint+keyboard only. Other than that, 2570p is the best ultraportable.
It is much more durable than x230.
Better Upgradability.
Support for raid0 and raid1.
Better repairability.
Have support for 2 9.5mm ssd/hdd rather than msata(which is much more expensive than your standard ssds) in x230

you can fit 4 drives in 2570p if you're capable of soldering
one in main 2,5" bay, one 9,5mm HDD in modded ultrabay via USB 3.0, one mSATA in same ultrabay via SATA and one in modded WWAN slot.

But let's face it, who EVER needs more than 2,5" SSD and HDD in 2570p.
Also 2570p is confirmed to have enough space to hold Seagate 5TB 2,5" HDD in slightly cut ultrabay caddy.

Hello guys, I'm aware that this isn't a tech helping center or something like that, but my T61p is unable to read the Wi-Fi card, even using 'lspci -k' won't output the name of it, and in the BIOS, the settings for the Wlan card are enabled. Even the physical switch on the front is turned on but only the Bluetooth LED lights up (as shown in the pic related), I also tried to use the Fn+F5 combination but it was useless. Have you guys got any idea or tip on how to solve this? I don't really want to waste money (even if it's only 10€) for a Wi-Fi USB dongle or for a replacement card.

it's pointless to try and predict, but it would require a major change in computers for any thinkpad from the last ten years to become useless. something on the level of usb type a or the x86_64 architecture being abandoned. thinkpads don't just up and die after a set number of years and cpu performance requirements have plateaued severely compared to ten years ago.

These numbers are predicted with how Intel is doing but keep in mind Amd barged with ryzen and raven ridge
Being both a cpu and gpu manufacturer Amd might push the boundaries much faster both for cpu performance and igpu performance than Intel did in the past the 5 years

What I'm trying get at is with raven ridge we might see a rapid change in what is acceptable where anything older than might fall out of favor much faster

But to be helpful, if Amd doesn't completely revolutionize low power laptop performance, expect to get at least 5 years out of any laptop past Xx10 and the X201. Maybe a bit less with the Xx20 laptops due to their weaker igpus.

Also there is no x210, what you ask is a x201.

Got an x220 in on monday, and I've noticed that it has a hard time charging. What's the best modern 14" thinkpad?

X1 Carbon, T47x or what?

I know the drive is working, but it isn't showing up in Device Manager or the BIOS. Don't have anything else I can put in to see if it's the caddy or the laptop that's broken either. Anything else I can do or should I just return the caddy and try a different one?

>>
>>61236062
use the disk manager, might just need to reformat the drive

if that doesn't work then;
take your main hard drive and put it in the caddy, leaving the main drive bay empty, it should boot up like normal

if it doesn't boot like normal then the caddy might be broken, if it does work then your new drive might be dead

if it does work then put your new drive in the main drive bay and leave your boot drive in the caddy and see if it recognizes it then

if new drive still isn't recognized then it's probably broke

I bought this for my ThinkPad W540 http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-For-LENOVO-T431S-T540P-W540-L440-L540-Touchpad-Trackpad-With-3-Buttons-Key-/. When I got it and put it in, it didn't work. Now, even with the old trackpad, neither Windows nor Linux will recognize the touchpad. If I go to the Device Manager in Windows, I have to show hidden devices to get it to show. It won't work no matter how many drivers, BIOS resets, CMOS battery resets, unplugging and replugging I do. The device manager gives me the error 24. Any help? i have some doubts if the trackpad is real or not

Hiya, could I get some help with my choices from you kind folks?

>Budget
Up to 300-ish Euros , would prefer to keep it around 200-250.

>Location
EU, Greece. Can be shipped to France too.

>Size
15'6" and above

>Performance
Read the guide and I quite like the W series 15'6" models but I couldn't find that many on e-bay that would ship here with reasonable pricing. I'd prefer something comparable to my current laptop, if possible? I like playing vidya but not very often and not extremely demanding, so stuff like New Vegas, S.T.A.L.K.E.R., at hardest. I have a Lenovo G580, has an i3 3110M @ 2.4 GHz, GeForce 710M. Having a SSD would be nice but I understand if it's gonna be a price stretch. The longer the battery life, the better, but I constantly travel around places with plugs so it's not that much of an issue, and neither is weight/size since I'm originally from a Slavic country and they make us carry fucking 30 kilos worth of books as children to condition us more easily.

>Other requirements
Very casual user, barely know how to replace components (current laptop looks like it's chewed on by a crocodile because i'm fuck-clumsy, not to mention having marks from a few x-acto blades because whoever made it glued the keyboard in). Are there any EU-based or at least EU-shipping used retailers, other than lurking on e-bay and praying?

Thank you and please don't eat me alive. Also, I know this isn't the stupid questions thread, but are SSHDs even worth it?
>>
anyone else having an issue with their power manager? it quit working and Windows is always checking for a solution to the problem

copying from lain because this board gets more traffic:

OK, time for a serious security question. Last fall I bought a T420s (used, of course). After verifying that it turns on and everything, I shelved it. It's been sitting and collecting dust until yesterday when I finally pulled it out and opened it up. It turns out that CompuTrace is enabled and cannot be disabled. Fuck. I've never dealt with this shit before, so I'm not really sure how it works.

Does this affect me? I have seen conflicting sources - some say that it only infects Windows installations; others say that they have Linux capabilities as well. Does running Arch, as I intend to do, render CompuTrace impotent and inert, or will it still be able to infect my OS and phone home? Does it present any security holes?

I have read that by calling the provided number and explaining the situation I might be able to have the company deactivate it. If the computer isn't running Windows and it can only phone home through Windows, will it be able to be properly deactivated, or will it simply be deactivated server-side but remain active on my machine?

should be as simple as yanking off the bezel, unscrewing like four screws at the corners and taking out the connector.
Then reverse all of the above. Thinkpad screen replacement is super easy.

If you treat it well it should last at least several years. I recently got an X60 from '06 or '07---the HDD had failed, the battery doesn't last long, and it could probably use a new fan/heatsink, or at least some new thermal paste, but otherwise it works just fine.

Need some advice.

Got an Intel T60 I want to libreboot, but the panel I have is on the "untested" list (HT14P12-100). Should I risk it and possibly brick a perfectly good classic thinkpad? Or give up on my Freedom Machine™?

Is x270 or x1 carbon better for school?
I know the specs in the 270 are better, but is it outdated in any way that will slow it back down? I like how the Carbon is advertised as very rugged, is this true??

X1

I did find some encouraging info. According to

https://vimuser.org/libreboot/oldstable/20150208/libreboot_bin/docs/future/index.html

the failing panels appear to be 8bpc. The panel I referenced is 6bpc according to the spec sheet

https://www.google.com/url?q=http://www.beyondinfinite.com/lcd/Library/Hyundai/HT14P12-100.pdf&sa=U&ved=0ahUKEwiU4pvG2_PUAhVrxoMKHS7CBSoQFggNMAA&usg=AFQjCNGQE1-f_K7cnTQ4kjhfpQUdxnv-sA

like the "good" panels.

Whats the best Thinkpad/Elitebook/Latitude i can get for around 500$?

My dad wants a new machine to replace his Latitude E5430, the issue is i think his budget is too small to really see a noticeable improvement in performance. He was looking at a lot of machines that were similarly specced to his machine he already has with the i5 3210m and 4gb of ddr3.
He wants 16gb and i reccomended a solid state drive which hes really interested in.

Im thinking T440/T450 at the very least, if his employer will give him a bit of cash for it hes very interested in a near maxed out T470.
