Why don't you run your own Plex empire, /g/?
>>
>>61209733
>plex
>plex would phone home to plex servers
>implying nsa aren't browsing your tv shows

naa rather make my own.
>>
>>61209912
Bro...if the NSA wants to watch, they are going to.
>>
>>61209932
What shows u think they like? I want to make sure they enjoy it since they gonna be watchin anyway
>>
>>61209912
But no level of "I'd rather roll my own" will get you the integration Plex offers.
>>
>>61209932
>Bro...if the NSA wants to watch, they are going to.
If a burglar really wants into your home, they can. So are you just going to leave your front door open for them because of that?
>>
>>61209733
>watching television instead of shitposting
o-oh wait
>>
>>61209912
NSA are too busy getting n00ds to bother with your autistic pirated video collection.
>>
Plex and XBMC take too much time and effort to set up and maintain desu
>>
>>61211749

What are you talking about? Learn some scripting and it's easy as shit.
>>
>>61211749
This.

This bullshit became needlessly complex and grinds away at bullshit metadata instead of providing much needed function and stability.

Xmbc took a huge shit 5 years ago when it became kodi. Plex is so bad you couldn't pay me to run it.

>the open market home media anywhere system is a farce and will never grow into a usable product until people pay for it.
>>
>>61209964

Because I'm already running my own Kodi empire.

>yes this retarded
Cause there's no standard on metadata in files. So personal libraries that haven't been groomed just crash it.
>>
>>61212031
It really is. It's cute how you think you're helpless to the mythical monolithic nsa.
>>
>>61211926
>thinking
>about how we're not really progressing by educating but instead showing off e-peen for internet status
>>
>>61209964
You can have that shit with kodi
>>
>>61209912
Not having a 10Gbps private server running Plex and automation software that downloads from Usenet and or private trackers and organizes your media automatically. Personal Netflix Plex empire is the way to go.
>>
>>61212086
If you are on the internet, the NSA can get into your system. Whether they would bother is an entirely different story.
>>
Plex doesn't understand the common anime naming convention and I have to put shows one season at a time (while removing OVAs and x.5 episodes from the folder) or it explodes
>>
>>61212301

>>
>>61209733

>>
>>61212458

>>
Would love to switch to Emby, but it locks up my Raspberry Pi 3 that I run a Plex server on.

I have absolutely no issues with Plex server, the second you look at Emby it locks the fuckin thing up.

The admin on the emby forums is also sorta an asshole.

Before any autist tries to point out how low power the RPi is, find me another server with as low TDP, that isn't going to suffer the same issue. Every other SBC has some fucked up issue.
>>
>>61212267
Funny thing is I made auto downloader for my torrents, and move them to directory based on that tv show in python. It was a fun project.
>>
Doesn't plex reencode your shit? Who would want that?
>>
>>61212885
only if necessary or wanted.

I use plex on my PC and have my uncle watch stuff over the internet on his Samsung tv.

no more copying to USB sticks or reminding him to bring the stick with him etc.
>>
>>61212939
What's "necessary?"
>>
Someone invite me to the anime server now

Running your own plex server is the best. I have a raspberry pi 3 with deluge that auto downloads and 5tb of storage. Also rpi monitor is pretty handy for statistics
>>
>>61212957
Don't you need an account to run your own plex server? I was looing at plex and I don't want to view my shows remotely just locally, is there a way just to do that?
>>
>>61209733
,but I do, with emby side-by-side for kodi front end.
Emby will eventually take over. it needs time to mature, but it is WAY better as a back end.
>>
>>61212946
like if your device can't play AC3 or DTS then it'll re-encode audio

good for tablets, phones and even the dumb Fire TV which can't AC3
>>
>>61212327
just match to tvdb and you're fine. There's also xem to match between the tvdb and anidb if you're lazy as shit. There's literally no reason to not be downloading all your tv and movies with sonarr/radarr and feed it into emby/plex. The automated media server nowadays is god tier.
>>
>>61213006
plex is free for local use, but yeah you need a free account.

>>
>>61209932
No they aren't. They mathematically can't. Encryption prevents that, you /v/irgin tech illiterate.
>>
Because it's proprietary.
Not free(beer)
Doesn't even work with everything.
It's mostly useless since my devices can play all the video regardless, actually better than plex does.
The exception to the above is 4k HEVC which I can't play on my thinkpad, but can play on my phone.

I'd be interested in a transcoder if it was FOSS and seamlessly integrated with the file system and media players.

Other bills need to come first.
>>
>>61212490
C# is bad enough to begin with, but the main problem there is that mono is a huge piece of shit. Combine this with Emby's poor caching policies ("looks like it's been a while, let's trash everything and rebuild with massive queries on demand so we're certain the user will have a miserable experience"), and you've got a recipe for disaster on weaker hardware. Emby running on my Core 2 Quad (Q6600?) is slow as shit as well.
>>
Because I built my own to fit my needs like every respectable Gentooman should
>>
>>61215181

Plex/Roku, whatever floats your boat anon, but for me Serviio + WDTV Live just works for me for as streaming media in my home goes. For access remotely I use the built in Remote Web Access feature found in WHS 2011. Features streaming media/browsing & downloading of files plus uploading files to the server. Also the connection is encrypted via TLS 256bit certificate. But for I also run FTP server for legacy needs.

Kodi masterrace reporting in

Can plex do tvtunes?
Can plex do rotating artwork (like: https://my.mixtape.moe/jwgmkb.webm)
Can plex look good? All the skins i see make me want to vomit
Can plex do smartplaylist, tagging, or grouping?

I'm running Kodi Aeon Nox SiLVO skin and I just upgraded from 3tb to 18tb.

Everytime I try plex it just looks disgusting no matter which skin i try

>>
>>61218815
>>61218946
Actually I take that back - if you want to stream to other devices off your network you need Servio Pro. It's $25 though, so much better alternative to Plex or Emby.
>>
>>61218971
i don't mind paying once, i just really hate that just about EVERYTHING comes with a subscription these days
>>
>>61219023
I haven't used it, but servio seems the most legit provided you're willing to actually set up your network. Plex freaked me out when I installed it and it claimed it was somehow trying to set up port forwarding on my router on its own.

>>
>>61224951
>does it have cbr support ?
>I can't stream
no, keep in mind it's supposed to be a *booru-like application, designed around storing and managing single, still images and small video clips like gif's
you can "stream" with it, in the sense that it can serve your content over a network, to a web browser, similar to a *booru website

>In what language is it written?
python
>>
>>61224986
i've been contemplating picking up an easy language just to make a program that can manage what shows and movies i have and can tick off things i've seen
shouldn't be too hard to make
this is basically all i use emby for, and it's pretty overkill just for that
yes, i know there's things like tract.tv or whatever, but i try to avoid relying on third party services just in general, for various reasons
>>
>>61225043
Yeah. All these solutions are pretty overkill for what they're normally used for.
>>
>>61224986
>>61225043
-- oh, combining that with something like a basic DLNA server with transcoding support would probably be useful for a lot of people, who just need the basics
