why would i want to change the look & layout of 4chan?
>>
You mean some of the most popular websites are designed for mouse and keyboard instead of sausage fingers?
Who'd a thunk it?

Because in some cases it's better to be functional instead of some art-project. Very pretty sites usually have in common that usability and speed takes the back-seat.

Design is the scam of the century
I loathe reddit with a passion but it does in fact provide lot of content in a decent page layout, but then it fail horribly in the comments section

I manage a couple of sites myself, once I was asked to design a 4 redundant page portal to feature one (1) picture, a address and three telephone numbers
>>
I like 4chan, CL, and Wiki's design though.

Reddit is fucking cancer tier though.

Also: it is my understanding that 4chan looks the way it does because it imitates a classic weab design of something like 2chan.

April Fools 2016 showed what 4chan would look like with material design. It was unironic in terms of design.

It looked like garbage, and everyone disliked it.

The UI here, and on HN, and on Wikipedia & Reddit are all perfect for what they do.

let me see here, let's look at 4chan.

I only use catalog view, so I have an entire boards posts shown at once, the normal paged or pageless navigation is shit,
Once in a thread, everything stretches as far as my window is open, there is no real wasted space as
Everything is upfront and easy to navigate, and with in line linking and image expansion, its easy to follow a conversation and not get lost.

reddit is much the same way, despite how much of a shit show the sites form of moderation is.
>>
>>61185273
Why are there so many scripts and requests
You could literally build this site with only HTML and CSS
>>
>>61185065
It's the reverse. They're ugly because they're popular. If they'd change the design, people would get very mad. ebay had to gradually fade the background color from yellow to white over the course of a year to prevent it.
>>
>>61186808
i'll give it that has its uses, however every in line thing there is now removed from below, so you never hit the same post and see it.

also, im firmly against mobile period, use real hardware to browse the internet, not a fucking phone. I have been forced to use the internet on a tablet when my computer died a few years back, in line was fairly easy to do on it, so its likely more to do with screensize.

>>
>>61185065
Good design IS important, and it's something people value, but that only stands true IF and only IF the site in question hasn't fallen to marketing/"engagement" overlords.

Reddit, Craigslist, 4Chan, HN, and TDR don't look amazing, true. But you know what else they don't do? They don't push you to share or subscribe ***and the ads don't displace the fucking content***.

So the issue isn't about good or bad design. The issue that well-designed websites more often than not are drenched in obnoxious and obtrusive social media buttons, "dickbars", interstitial ads, full page ads, etc, while all of those old/"ugly" sites don't, and THAT is what makes the difference.

For instance. I don't know if the new design of www.romhacking.net is good, but I like it a fucking lot. I also like the way Windows 8.1 looks by default. And macOS. And MIUI. However the way Windows 10 looks is just not good to me.

The font size is so small that the line length on a regular screen gets annoyingly long. Line height could be a little taller too. The text wraps around all kinds of fact/navigation boxes which makes reading even more clumsy. It may be fit for a magazine, but not a page with long texts. What's ironic is that most articles on Wikipedia follow the same structure, so a design standardisation wouldn't be hard to neither implement or get used to.

Sites like Reddit and 4chan save a fuckton of data. And besides, I prefer 4chan and Reddit's design over the mobile counterparts. 4chan's UI, in using a design from yesteryear, has an elegance about it: it's design is fairly spartan (although updates have been going on over the years, rarely changing the actual look of the place).
It is almost the ideal for text discussions: in contrast, a site like Tumblr works more to exhibit your content and ideas to other people but is terrible for trying to have a discussion on said content.
Reddit is better than Tumblr for discussions but I'm not a fan in how replies always shift off to the right: like having consecutive else if statements, you don't want them going off of the right of the screen.

Also, to be Captain Obvious, the less flashy a website is, the kinder it is to my download speed.

You're a fucking idiot, not every Mac user is a complete hipster faggot

Macs are powerful, fast, consistent, and they rarely crash. Windows used to be more powerful but I feel it's really lost its way in recent years.

When I bought my rMBP I was really tempted by the Dell XPS 13, in fact I really wanted to like it. But it has several issues like not being able to turn off auto-brightness, and also the shitiness of the trackpad gestures, and Windows' shitty support for high DPI displays. OS X is far stronger than Windows in all these areas. And Apple computers have a very high build quality.

Macs aren't perfect but they're strong and reliable computers.

These articles always overlook quality content>presentation. You can polish up a turd, and it's still going to be a turd.

Also, whoever came up with the idea of parallax scrolling for websites deserves to be publicly executed, so they can be an example for what happens when you put form far above function.
